Good news: Obama might pick John Kerry for Defense, Susan Rice for State

posted at 10:11 pm on November 12, 2012 by Allahpundit

Time for the daily reminder that elections have consequences, and not just at the presidential level. If the GOP had found a way to get to 51 in the Senate, I’m thinking O might not have bothered nominating Rice. The temptation for Republicans to nuke her out of hand over her Benghazi disinformation would have been enormous. As it is, with 55 seats in the bank, why not?

President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus.

Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with the transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations…

Rice’s description, days after the attack, of a protest gone wrong indicated that she either intentionally misled the country or was incompetent, Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said Sunday. Rice, he said, “would have an incredibly difficult time” winning Senate confirmation as secretary of state.

But several White House officials said Obama is prepared to dig in his heels over her nomination to replace Hillary Rodham Clinton…

[A]dministration officials, one of whom described Kerry as a “war hero,” said his qualifications for the defense job included not only his naval service in Vietnam but also his knowledge of the budget and experience in the diplomacy that has increasingly become a part of the defense portfolio. They said the Democrats’ retention of the Senate majority, with a net gain of two seats, in last week’s election provided a cushion that allowed them to consider Kerry’s departure from the chamber.

Panetta implied today that he’d stay on for awhile longer, and refused even to say that he wouldn’t stay for O’s entire second term. I think the White House wants it that way, not so much for continuity at Defense for awhile but so that Massachusetts Democrats have time to recruit a solid candidate to challenge Scott Brown in the special election. Brown’s still popular now; if Panetta can wait a bit and give voters there time to forget him, maybe he’ll be less formidable in running for Kerry’s seat. Or maybe not and he’ll be reelected to the Senate for another few years, whereupon he’ll lose again in the regular election as Bay State voters dutifully line up for whichever liberal’s on the ballot that year. Massachusetts, man. Massachusetts.

I’m afraid you misunderstand.

The call going out now is for conservatives to stop bailing, and just let the ship sink before the first class passengers can make it to the lifeboats. The longer this decline takes, the more time for the left to secure escape routes for themselves, and themselves only.

John Kerry for Secretary of State, anyone? Refusals to testify to congress because it’s personally inconvenient?

Let. It. Burn.

The Resolute Desk on November 12, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Could you imagine the reception he would get when he visited the troops? We thought the reception they give Barry is cold.

I think you might call it a “wall of stone”: what serviceman or servicewoman could shake that traitor’s hand, or look him in the eye unless it was with cold contempt?

The Obama administration could not do such a thing unless it was to destroy the morale of the military, and may God damn every Democrat to burn in hell if they do.

This was Alinsky’s plan all along. Obama taught Alinsky.

The goal is to foment enough public discontent, moral confusion, and outright chaos to spark the social upheaval that Marx, Engels, and Lenin predicted

— a revolution whose foot soldiers view the status quo as fatally flawed and wholly unworthy of salvation. Thus, the theory goes, the people will settle for nothing less than that status quo’s complete collapse

— to be followed by the erection of an entirely new system upon its ruins.

Toward that end, they will be apt to follow the lead of charismatic radical organizers who project an aura of confidence and vision, and who profess to clearly understand what types of societal “changes” are needed.

Obama is moving quickly in his final term.

Last year my son applied to 18 med schools. He graduated Magna cum Laude from Pepperdine University and scored 34 on the MCAT, but was only accepted to two small time schools. After careful thought, he decided the two were too expensive and chose not to go to med school.

I had encouraged him to consider joining the Air Force and let them put him through med school, but he was having none of that.
Thank God he is smarter than I.

I think he’s trying to say that the United States is on a ship, and the ship is somehow sinking, and that conservatives should allow their country to drown. A reprehensible notion in and of itself.

But how is that “the left” are the first-class passengers? What are the lifeboats? What would be an escape route? Where would “the left” escape to, and how would they prevent others from escaping?

Metaphors should simplify and illuminate an argument, not obscure it.

All this “let it burn” talk misses one point most salient:

The liberals control the media complex. If it does, indeed, burn, then a liberal administration will blame it on conservatism. They will blame us, the media will blame us, and low information voters will elect more liberals so that they can really go all in next time because it would’ve worked if only they had a few more votes. If you think so highly of the electorate that they will simply “wake up” once liberals damage this country enough, you must not remember the 2012 election.

mintycrys on November 13, 2012 at 12:37 AM

I hope Susan Rice brings her You-Tube videos to the confirmation hearing.

And Johnny can bring his medals and show them off – the ones he ‘threw away in protest’. Maybe he can bring along his ‘other than honorable discharge’ and impress the committee with that.

Yes, that’s the flaw with what I call the ‘grand revelation’ theory, the hope that one day long-established pathways in millions of voters’ brains will suddenly reroute, and they will see the light of conservatism.

Political change doesn’t work like that, it moves slowly a percent or two at a time. The liberal media will not change overnight either.

Metaphors should simplify and illuminate an argument, not obscure it.

Drew Lowell on November 12, 2012 at 11:59 PM

Well, they should, but all metaphors are imperfect. The question is if they are useful.

The ship metaphor’s biggest flaw is that, once a ship sinks, it’s basically gone forever. But there’s a good chance the United States will be recoverable after the crash. This nation has survived some devastating blows, including civil war.

It’s gonna be rough, but we can make it. Hopefully we will get through it quickly and pick up the pieces on the other side.

And don’t be surprised when the ruling elite class “heads for the lifeboats”, insulating themselves from the consequences of their own policies, leaving us peasants to fend for ourselves. For that matter, they’re already doing it: Obamacare does not apply to the ruling elite.

I think the GOP in the Senate should fight the Rice nomination. It is what they have sworn to do. Susan Rice is clearly a partisan whore who knowingly lied about the Benghazi situation. She clearly lacks integrity and is not morally fit for the job. At a minumum she needs to answer many questions about her role in the cover-up before any confirmation vote is given.

I believe that obama is trying to get enough military leadership to resign (which would probably happen if Kerry is appointed SecDef) that he can replace them with his political general and colonels. Heaven knows, as unbelievable to me as it is, there are enough of them in power in the military to cause the civilians trouble. Remember how the marxists work – they worm themselves into a position of power and then promote like minds around them until they have complete power. See how they have taken over hollywood, the universities, the press, and the government school system.

The only flaw in their plans is that the military enlisted and CoGOs would probably not follow them. This is obama’s ultimate ploy to become presidentfor life.
