Video: Utah coal mine lays off 102 workers over Obama “war on coal”

posted at 11:21 am on November 9, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

In January 2008, Barack Obama promised that his energy and regulatory policies would “necessarily bankrupt” coal plants. Consider this the next step towards fulfilling his campaign pledge. Over 100 coal miners in Utah got pink slips late yesterday, and the mine’s operator blamed Obama’s re-election and the bleak future for coal it portends:

The layoffs at the West Ridge Mine are effective immediately, according to UtahAmerican Energy Inc., a subsidiary of Murray Energy Corp. They were announced in a short statement made public Thursday, two days after Obama won re-election.

The layoffs are necessary because of the president’s “war on coal,” the statement said. The slogan is one used frequently during the election by Murray Energy CEO Robert Murray, who was an ardent supporter of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

In its statement, UtahAmerican Energy blames the Obama administration for instituting policies that will close down “204 American coal-fired power plants by 2014″ and for drastically reducing the market for coal.

“There is nowhere to sell our coal, and when we can, the market prices are far lower,” the statement said. “Without markets, there can be no coal mines and no coal jobs.”

It’s not just the regulatory policies in play here. The sudden discovery of vast amounts of natural gas and the relative ease in accessing it has made the cleaner fuel more cost-effective. That’s good news for both consumers and environmentalists … except that the latter wants to cut off access to natural gas as well. Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” as it is commonly known, which has been in use for decades, has suddenly become the latest cause du jour. Obama’s EPA has tried to block fracking as much as it can, and we can expect the EPA to become bolder in this regard over the next four years.

We may well find ourselves in an energy decline within a short period of time if more coal operators choose to scale down or close altogether, while the Obama administration keeps attacking natural-gas extraction. Be prepared for energy bills to “skyrocket,” as Obama also promised during that same interview.

Update: The Boss Emeritus reminded us yesterday of her warning last week of massive layoffs in the event of an Obama win. The Blaze is keeping a list of post-election layoff notices as well.

I would hope that all the people that were laid off are the obama supporters. I don’t feel sorry for them.

However, this is Utah and some of these mine workers are conservative. Sucks that conservatives have to suffer because we have so many idiots in other parts of the country. If I were a CEO the first people that would be laid off would be the ones with obama bumper stickers. At least they’ll have 99 weeks of unemployment benefits and “free health care”

I wonder about some of that though. I know for a fact, you can check the county voting stats, that in PA the coal and rural counties did vote for Romney. It was Phillie and Pittsburgh that so over-whelmingly voted for Obama that it destroyed PA. Basically the voters in those cities told the rest of PA to eff off. Don’t know if that’s true in some other states.

No worries about Obama’s EPA here in Minny because the Enviro Lobby will do their bidding on the state level.

Say good bye to frac sand from the Minnesota side of the Mississippi valley. The DFL now controls everything here, so get ready for the MPA and the state government will impose a state-wide frac sand mining moratorium.

We may well find ourselves in an energy decline within a short period of time if more coal operators choose to scale down or close altogether, while the Obama administration keeps attacking natural-gas extraction. Be prepared for energy bills to “skyrocket,” as Obama also promised during that same interview.

Did you see the gas lines and panic after Sandy?

Now spread that out all across America – that is what is coming.
The Mideast will blow up – now the Islamists know that Obama has their back.
Israel will become a footnote to history by 2016.
Once Obama slices the throat of the domestic energy sector – then the real decline can begin.
I doubt by 2016 that we will have enough fuel to operate our military, much less energy
for industry and consumers.

Hotair conveniently omits that the a**hole had the gall to make everyone listen to his prayer first:

Dear Lord:

The American people have made their choice. They have decided that America must change its course, away from the principals of our Founders. And, away from the idea of individual freedom and individual responsibility. Away from capitalism, economic responsibility, and personal acceptance.

We are a Country in favor of redistribution, national weakness and reduced standard of living and lower and lower levels of personal freedom.

My regret, Lord, is that our young people, including those in my own family, never will know what America was like or might have been. They will pay the price in their reduced standard of living and, most especially, reduced freedom.

The takers outvoted the producers. In response to this, I have turned to my Bible and in II Peter, Chapter 1, verses 4-9 it says, “To faith we are to add goodness; to goodness, knowledge; to knowledge, self control; to self control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, kindness; to brotherly kindness, love.”

Lord, please forgive me and anyone with me in Murray Energy Corp. for the decisions that we are now forced to make to preserve the very existence of any of the enterprises that you have helped us build. We ask for your guidance in this drastic time with the drastic decisions that will be made to have any hope of our survival as an American business enterprise.

Amen.

Oh, there are going to be so many people laid off because of this. I work in a small business, and what we’re hearing is that every small business that is over 50 employees is now scrambling to find ways to cut workers until they’re back down at fifty. Businesses that small simply cannot afford to provide healthcare to their employees, so they don’t have a choice but to cut jobs until they’re no longer legally required to.

But wait, there’s more!

Every job acts as a multiplier effect. For every good high paying job that puts somebody firmly into the middle class, numerous jobs are created to support that person. Cashiers, waitresses/waiters, daycare workers, and so on and so forth. A small business laying off people may only directly result in twenty five, fifty or a hundred people being laid off, but indirectly it leads to upwards to several hundred more jobs disappearing, or never being created at all.

I heard yesterday that natural gas is so cheap and gasoline so high that it now makes economic sense to make natural gas into liquid transportation fuel. This wouldn’t lower gasoline prices, but it would make for less need for imported oil. The more we can produce here, the better, in general. Of course, if the EPA restricts frac’ing, then all bets are off, and both energy prices and carbon emissions will climb. Poor people and minorities hardest hit.

Perhaps you should consider visiting Al-Quedas official website, they probably have prayers that are more up your alley.

Pissy pouty coal company lays off workers to make a political statement and Hotair cheers hooray.

Hooray for that heroic CEO! He helps us try to make the president look bad!

Don’t forget this is all God’s Plan.

the difference between Cons and libs is Cons would rather be right and lose then woefully wrong and win

Amen.

Oh, no! My boss made me listen to something he had to say! Man, that almost sounds like he’s an authority figure when at my place of employment, under the contract by which he provides me with compensation for my services.

The comments here continue to demonstrate why the GOP got its asses kicked on Tuesday. All you HotAirheads want to do is preserve your own little pus-bubble of unreality.

Failing. Failing. Failed.

But keep trying.

What part of his prayer is untrue? Looks pretty solid to me. Oh. Maybe you are at a disadvantage since you speak Canadian.

This is clearly because the millionaires and billionaires, like that scoundrel George W. Bush who also put a voodoo curse on the Obama administration, don’t pay enough in taxes.

Damn rich people.
