Quotes of the day

posted at 11:07 pm on November 8, 2012 by Allahpundit

[T]he “Romney would have lost anyway” argument neglects the fact that his dismal performance among Hispanics made the race unwinnable. Even if we accept Krikorian’s view that the Hispanic vote only mattered in Florida and Nevada, when you add those states to the already solid blue states, it means spotting Democrats 236 electoral votes. All Obama or any Democratic candidate would need to get over the top at that point would be to win Michigan and Pennsylvania — two states that have gone Democratic every year since 1988. Failing that, Democrats would have multiple other combinations to get over 270. In contrast, a Republican who lost those states could still lose the election even if he or she won all of the reliably red states in addition to North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, New Hampshire, Colorado, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Again, this analysis is conservative. In 2004, Bush carried New Mexico with 44 percent of the Hispanic vote, but this year the state wasn’t even in play. Also, Hispanics made up 14 percent of the electorate in Colorado, providing Obama with his margin of victory there. Add Colorado to the Democratic fold, and the electoral math becomes even more daunting for Republicans.

Senate Democrats are planning to quickly revisit immigration reform after President Barack Obama’s inauguration, according to several Democratic sources.

What type of legislation they will end up pushing has yet to be discussed in detail. But the party feels emboldened by Tuesday’s election results, in which Republicans suffered a blistering defeat among Latinos. And there is a sense that the political landscape couldn’t be more ripe for a legislative topic that’s proved dicey in the past…

“I think [Republicans] are going to want to do it now,” Schumer said. “[It] is at the top of the list because the nation demands it and needs it. And, again, I think in the exit polls, two-thirds of Americans basically agreed with the concept of real immigration reform.”

He’s right: Americans in general, even Republicans, support immigration reform more than the congressional GOP would suggest. Sixty-five percent of voters support giving undocumented immigrants working in the U.S. a path to legal status, including 37 percent of Republicans, according to exit polls.

Asked whether he will make another attempt to fully repeal the Affordable Care Act, Boehner said “the election changes that” and “Obamacare is the law of the land.”…

The speaker also revealed that comprehensive, bipartisan immigration overhaul would be a top priority of his agenda during the 113th Congress.

“This issue has been around far too long,” he said. “A comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I’m confident that the president, myself, others can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.”

***

Immigrants should be a natural GOP constituency. Newcomers to the U.S.—legal or illegal—tend to be aspiring people who believe in the dignity of work and self-sufficiency, and they are cultural conservatives. They are not the 47%. Republicans are also supposed to be the folks who have figured out the law of unintended consequences, such as that imposing ever-tighter border controls discourages the millions of illegal immigrants living in this country from returning home…

We understand the law-and-order issues at stake, particularly along the border, as well as questions of fairness in allowing illegals to jump the immigration queue. But the right response isn’t mass deportation—as politically infeasible as it is morally repulsive. It’s a rational, humane, bipartisan reform that broadens the avenues to legal immigration, both for those abroad and those already here…

No doubt this editorial will provoke letters denouncing us for being soft on the issue. Now is an opportune time to ask those disapproving readers how many more Tuesdays like this one they’d care to repeat?

***

The principal reason they go Democratic is the issue of illegal immigrants. In securing the Republican nomination, Mitt Romney made the strategic error of (unnecessarily) going to the right of Rick Perry. Romney could never successfully tack back.

For the party in general, however, the problem is hardly structural. It requires but a single policy change: Border fence plus amnesty. Yes, amnesty. Use the word. Shock and awe — full legal normalization (just short of citizenship) in return for full border enforcement.

I’ve always been of the “enforcement first” school, with the subsequent promise of legalization. I still think it’s the better policy. But many Hispanics fear that there will be nothing beyond enforcement. So, promise amnesty right up front. Secure the border with guaranteed legalization to follow on the day the four border-state governors affirm that illegal immigration has slowed to a trickle.

***

If Republicans want to change their stance on immigration, they should do so on the merits, not out of a belief that only immigration policy stands between them and a Republican Hispanic majority. It is not immigration policy that creates the strong bond between Hispanics and the Democratic party, but the core Democratic principles of a more generous safety net, strong government intervention in the economy, and progressive taxation. Hispanics will prove to be even more decisive in the victory of Governor Jerry Brown’s Proposition 30, which raised upper-income taxes and the sales tax, than in the Obama election…

The idea of the “social issues” Hispanic voter is also a mirage. A majority of Hispanics now support gay marriage, a Pew Research Center poll from last month found. The Hispanic out-of-wedlock birth rate is 53 percent, about twice that of whites.

The demographic changes set into motion by official and de facto immigration policy favoring low-skilled over high-skilled immigrants mean that a Republican party that purports to stand for small government and free markets faces an uncertain future.

***

***

***

Fox News’ Sean Hannity told his radio listeners Thursday that he’s “evolved” on immigration and thinks undocumented immigrants without criminal records should have a “pathway to citizenship.”…

“We;ve got to get rid of the immigration issue altogether,” he said. “It’s simple to me to fix it. I think you control the border first. You create a pathway for those people that are here. You don’t say you’ve got to go home. And that is a position that I’ve evolved on. Because, you know what, it’s got to be resolved. The majority of people here, if some people have criminal records you can send them home, but if people are here, law-abiding, participating for years, their kids are born here, you know, it’s first secure the border, pathway to citizenship, done, whatever little penalties you want to put in there, if you want, and it’s done.”

It would be political suicide for the GOP to try and out-pander the Democrats on any issue. How about we stick to our principles, and find a candidate who actually believes in and can articulate conservative principles. That wins every time.

Because the MSM helped him carry out the “suppress turnout on the right with the ‘kill Romney’ meme” while Obama ginned up turnout with his own base with vile rhetoric (just look at his supporters who post here), with Union thugs guaranteeing “turnout” to get the election within “cheating margin” (or “margin of fraud” as Pat Caddell called it Sunday night).

Immigration reform is win-win for the GOP. It takes away the issue by which Democrats own Latinos. That’s why many Democrats are reluctant to do it, they want to keep Latinos hanging on the line. That’s why they killed Bush’s immigration bill. And when Latinos are legalized and start to become established and prosperous they will look beyond the party of hand outs, high taxes and atheism. In other words they will become ordinary Americans, not a minority.

breffnian on November 9, 2012 at 12:31 AM

Your naivety is really dangerous. I just pray that this is not what’s going through the minds of the Republican leadership right now. First of all, passing amnesty does not take the issue away from the Democrats. It hands them 12-20 million new voters. Let’s be generous and say the GOP manages to win over 1/3 of them. That’s still at the very least 8 million new Democrat voters vs. only 4 million for the Republicans. You wanna spot the Dems an even bigger lead going into every future election?

Secondly, why do you think we won’t be in the same situation in another decade with more illegals clamoring for citizenship? Because we’ve been down this road before. Reagan in 1986 granted amnesty to over 2 million illegals with the understanding that the Democrats in charge in Congress would secure the border. How’d that deal pan out?

The GOP cannot buy off Hispanic voters with amnesty. It would be like trying to chip into the Democrats’ stranglehold with the black vote by suddenly embracing the welfare state and handouts. Or free birth control and student loan forgiveness for single women and young voters. The reason those groups are voting for Dems is because the economy sucks, there are no jobs out there, and they’re lured into supporting the party that’s promising to take care of them. I hate to say it, but the only way this problem can be dealt with is for the gravy train to run out of money(which is fast approaching) and those voting blocs to realize the Democrat Party is making them promises it can never keep. When that day arrives, you’ll see voter turnout amongst those folks collapse.

Cross posted from another thread….

One thing has become clear…some out of the box thinking is required for 2016.

The internet brought citizen journalists. It may be time for citizen activists on the conservative side. Not just the Tea Party, but some guerrilla tactics like they use on the left. I wish I could find a link to the ‘Voter Report Card’ that they sent out. Creepy, but apparently effective in getting young people to the polls.

I know it was a goofy idea that I posted a while back, about sending people a ‘bill’ for their share of the national debt and updating it monthly. I mean with people’s names and addresses on it. I know people out there have better, more effective ideas than this. Something is needed to wake people up, and clearly traditional methods are not doing it.

Crowdsourcing is the way to go on this. The internet is an amazing tool for organizing. There are some brilliant thinkers on our side. Microtargeting works.

The point is to stay within the law, but outside of the GOP establishment. Undermine peoples’ faith in the Democrats to govern and do it in a new way. Channel the disgust and anger away from the circular firing squad and toward the enemy.

Romney actually touched on that theme often. He even personalized that message – to incorporate Ozero’s big government solution fail. This country is far more dysfunctional than anyone really can understand. We think Food Stamp President is a bad thing. 46.7 MILLION people think its a good thing. They WANT the government to take care of them. They need the government to take care of them. They are so deeply dysfunctional, Government is their ONLY Solution. And worse, Their Govt CAN fail, just as long as they are taken care of, because that’s all they have.

That’s one reason he won and Romney lost.
And with time Latinos will vote conservative as they become more prosperous and move out of the ghetto. That’s always happens with immigrant groups. Look at the Irish. Right now they feel Dems are the only friends they have. And if the economy tanks they will cling to the Dems even tighter in hardship. The sooner they start their evolution the better.
If we could flip Hispanics and Blacks (or even get 40%) the Dems would be crippled. If we could obliterate public sector unions they would disappear. The Obama coalition is a house of cards waiting to fall. Conservatives need to stop holding it up.

Letting the Bush tax cuts expire, which will jack up capital gains and dividend taxes, and tax 1 million small businesses? You new CARBON tax? New EPA regulations on fossil fuels? One thing is for sure – you leftists are economic illiterates – and you are “destroying” our economy.

I do know what you mean. It is one of the greatest puzzle for me as to why people in the inner cities are content to be stuck in housing projects for years. Pool your resources…get one family out, then another and another. If immigrants can do it, why not everybody? Too much like hard work, I guess.

It is what Bill Whittle was speaking about on his youtube channel video, I think. Setting up parallel structures to the existing establishment.

If you have only 2 apples it’s like one was a Republican apple and the other was a Democrat apple. The democratic apple was slightly larger.

You are right that the hateful 1/2(one apple) of the country (liberals) hate the nice 1/2(the other apple) conservatives. And we both know (even though we are not so educated)..we both know that the dems are racist in their heart. We’ve got Marco Rubio, Susanna Martinez, Brian Sandoval, Bobby Jindal, and Nicky Haley. Who are the Democrat Hispanics and Asians in such high positions? There aren’t any. This is our best bet to win over these communities. These are the kind of people who set examples for others to follow, and they’re on OUR side.

Rubio should be the 2016 nominee by virtue of the fact that there is NOTHING that would scare the Democrats to death more. He is their greatest fear.

Don’t tell me he’s not ready. Don’t tell me he has Establishment tendencies. Don’t tell me “no legislators, executives only”. Don’t tell me that the MSM would find some way to make Hispanics hate him. Don’t tell me “if we engage in identity politics, we’re no better than the Democrats”.

He’s a weapon that the other side wishes it had. And when you have an effective weapon to use against these dirty street fighters, you use it! He’ll deliver Florida for starters, and could bring back Colorado, Nevada, and even New Mexico.

“But he’s Cuban, and the Mexicans don’t like Cubans”. “He’s White and the Mexicans are brown”. Well there’s a gorgeous White Hispanic woman who lives in my building. And you know what? She’s part of the 71% of Hispanics who voted for Obama.

Give them a chance to vote for the first Hispanic POTUS when the economy has been in the crapper for 8 years, and let’s see if they pull the lever for Hillary, or Andrew Cuomo, because Rubio is White and Cuban, not brown and Mexican or Puerto Rican.

Not buying it. Geez, how stupid and suicidal can we be.

sharrukin on November 9, 2012 at 1:13 AM

Well I would rather have a illegal Mexican as my next door neighbor than a white American progressive…

Some of you need to realize that about 20-30% of the white population are straight up progressives if not out right communists. They have control of the much of the media, academia, and entertainment in this nation. When they talk of wealth redistribution they don’t mean taking hard earned money from tax-payers and businessmen in order to give it to the minorities and the poor. If that was true Detroit would be wealthy! No…they mean taking money from tax-payers in the private sector and business class and giving it to themselves!!!

They use the poor and minorities to further their power, ideology and money. They also hope conservatives will blame the minorities and poor, which only helps push minorities and the poor to the white progressives who “help” them by giving them a handout that cost very little, while the white progressives managing the handouts have six figure salaries or more.

William Eaton on November 9, 2012 at 1:14 AM

First of all, Boehner is a wuss who cries like a girl and apparently fights like one too. He needs to be strung up by his toenails. The last thing we need right now is a Speaker who shrugs his shoulders and says, “Oh well. Nothing we can do here. Moving along…” D-bag!

Second, I’m with Hannity on the immigration issue. I’m building a house right now. The Hispanic subs are there on time, they listen to what I tell them, they work quickly and produce quality work. The white crews are competent, but for the most part don’t seem to be the kind of hard workers the Hispanics are. They also don’t like to listen to me, I’m guessing because I’m a girl and couldn’t possibly know what I’m talking about. Nor would they even entertain the notion of working on a Saturday, which is de riguer for the Hispanic crews.

I realize this is anecdotal but I think it illustrates the point that most illegals come here because they really do want to do better for themselves and their families. They are hungry and they’re eager and these are exactly the kind of people I want coming over here. They are no different from my Italian ancestors who came over on the boat 150 years prior. Now this is not to say I endorse them sneaking in through tunnels, but the reality is, it’s very difficult in terms of red tape and expensive fees to immigrate here. I think we need to make it easier for people who intend to come here to become productive, tax-paying citizens.

Of course the first order of business is to seal up the border; that’s not even an immigration issue for me. It’s a safety issue. We have people all over the world who could easily pass for Hispanic who would love nothing more than to walk over the border and pour some bioweapon into our water supply. That issue needs to be addressed immediately, even before any discussion on amnesty or guest worker programs or whatever. And anyone who IS here illegally (or not, for that matter) who is not actively contributing in some meaningful way but rather just taking from the system, or who is engaged in criminal activity, can be escorted back over the border. But those who are here and have become productive members of the community, I’m fine with giving them a pathway to citizenship. Let’s just take the steps we need to so that we can prevent having to revisit this issue again in another 30 years.

davidk on November 9, 2012 at 1:15 AM

How soon some of the pundits forget. McCain supported amnesty even more than some Democrats and it didn’t buy him hardly anything at the ballot box. Hispanics support government welfare programs in large numbers. Their out of wedlock birth rate is high which means lots of single moms which means heavy use of government programs.

Republican amnesty would be a “lite” version of what Democrats want. Why would Hispanics flock to Republicans for that when they already agree with Democrats on issues more important to them. Let me tell you, Hispanics already figure amnesty is coming, they know it is just a matter of time. There are no votes to be harvested by pandering to that nonsense.

Heather MacDonald has done some great work on this. Hispanics prefer liberal economic policies and social welfare. They are religious but more and more are supporting gay marriage and abortion. They are *NOT* a natural Republican/Conservative constituency. To get a majority of their votes we would have to become just like Democrats and then what is the point?

echosyst on November 9, 2012 at 1:16 AM

Schadenfreude on November 9, 2012 at 1:17 AM

sharrukin on November 9, 2012 at 1:18 AM

El_Terrible on November 9, 2012 at 1:18 AM

breffnian on November 9, 2012 at 1:02 AM

How is this issue killing us? It was never even discussed in the election. By either side. How in the world can you just sit there and guarantee that Latinos will vote Republican over time? Has that happened with blacks when many of them moved out of poverty and into the middle class in the 90′s after the GOP passed welfare reform? Nope, roughly 90% kept voting Democrat(until Obama came along and it went even higher).

And how would these Latinos even be guaranteed to move out of poverty? You add 12-20 million new legal citizens into the workforce with no jobs waiting for them and you’re not creating a bunch of new members of the middle class. You’re creating 12-20 million new welfare recipients. And we all know how they vote. That’s to say nothing BTW of the fact that we’re broke as a nation and can’t afford that many more people sucking on the government teat.

Obviously if we could flip blacks and Latinos, the Dems would be crippled. And if I had a 12 inch c-ck….well, you get the point(no pun intended). That ain’t happening. Certainly not overnight. We can make inroads with Latinos over time. Bush showed just 8 years ago that it is possible for a Republican to appeal to that bloc of voters. But pandering and selling out your principles is never the way to do it. And keep in mind even if caving on amnesty did manage to up the GOP’s share of the Latino vote to 40%, what would it do to the white vote where they’re currently dominating? You think 8 million sitting out 2012 was bad enough? Imagine double that number refusing to vote next time around?
