Just a reminder: Congress not done investigating Benghazi

posted at 8:01 am on November 8, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Nor should they be.  Four Americans died, at least two of which might have been rescued had prompt action taken place when the attack occurred — and none of them would have been dead had the Obama administration paid attention to the increased warnings from our own staff and our allies around the region.  And let’s not forget the fact that this White House told a fable about a YouTube video for nearly two weeks, when enough data was almost immediately present to seriously undermine that story from the beginning.

Saxby Chambliss isn’t forgettting, not just because an election has passed:

While Republican attacks on Obama over the handling of the assault, which killed four Americans including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, became a major part of the campaign in recent weeks, an investigator said on Wednesday the inquiry was never related to the election.

With majority control of the House of Representatives, Obama’s Republican critics will continue to wield broad investigative powers, including the ability to subpoena evidence and testimony from administration officials.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which held a contentious hearing in early October on the Benghazi attacks, will continue its investigation, a spokesman for the committee said.

The Republican vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, said his panel would proceed with its review of the Benghazi attacks.

Investigators seek to understand “how terrorists were able to successfully breach our diplomatic facilities, why the administration obscured the role of al-Qaeda affiliated terrorists in its presentations to the American people, and why there appears to be a lack of urgency in finding and holding accountable those responsible for the deaths of four Americans,” Chambliss wrote in an email to Reuters. He also said the investigation was never related to the campaign.

In fact, the Senate investigation couldn’t possibly have had a direct impact on the election.  It won’t even start until November 15th, when the 112th Congress gets back into session for its lame-duck return to Washington.  The House Oversight probe began last month, but that ‘s because it was just a few weeks after the Obama administration got forced into changing its story more than once about the nature of the attack, its knowledge of the security issues at the consulate, and who knew what when during the attack itself.

Speaking of the YouTube video that the Obama administration insisted was the cause of the attack, even to the extent of Obama speaking of it at the United Nations, the producer of the film will spend the next year in prison for “probation violations” that got mysteriously discovered just when the White House needed a scapegoat.  Coincidence?  Hey, why not?

The Cerritos man behind an anti-Muslim film that roiled the Middle East was sentenced Wednesday to a year in prison for violating his probation stemming from a 2010 bank fraud conviction by lying about his identity.

U.S. District Court Judge Christina Snyder immediately sentenced Mark Basseley Youssef after he admitted to four of the eight violations that had been alleged, including obtaining a fraudulent California driver’s license.

None of the violations had to do with the content of “Innocence of Muslims,” a film that depicts Mohammad as a religious fraud, pedophile and a womanizer. The movie sparked violence in Libya and other parts of the Middle East, killing dozens.

Youssef, 55, was arrested in late September, just weeks after he went into hiding when deadly violence erupted in Libya and other parts of the Middle East in response to the movie.

If he violated his probation — and he apparently admits to doing so — then he should go back to prison. But no one would have known about his probation violations had the government not needed to make a high-profile arrest of the man who made the movie for which this administration tried to blame the “spontaneous demonstration” that never existed into an unplanned attack that clearly wasn’t.  While we’re asking questions about the administration’s failure to properly protect our Benghazi consulate, come to its aid while under attack, and then insisting that they had “no evidence” that it was a planned terrorist attack when they had evidence in the first hours of the attack that it was, perhaps we should also ask questions about who ordered the sudden high-profile investigation into Nakoula’s probation status — and why.

I just hope the Republicans in Congress ignore the upcoming attacks of the Obama Media and go after this thing with a relentlessness that will stun the liberals and Democrats, and that they not stop until they have the solid undeniable proof and evidence that will be more than sufficient to bring impeachment charges against Obama and his entire administration, including Hillary Clinton!

That and not nominating Bob Dole (Gracious RINO loser) over and over and over again.

PappyD61 on November 8, 2012 at 8:11 AM

Exactly what rob verdi & mrscullen said.

The MSM will not report it (other than to decry how the Republicans are “politicizing” it).

And even if the House draws up articles of impeachment, the Senate will clear him of ALL charges in a New York minute.

We had one chance to get rid of Obama and WE THE PEOPLE failed.
And no, it wasn’t Romney’s fault — if we had run Jesus Christ we would have failed — the MSM & the union thugs were out in full force, lock down mode to get Dear Leader over the finish line. Nothing any of us could have done would have changed that. See, when the MSM stopped being a free & fair press to keep politicians in line by informing the people, instead of becoming something that would make Pravda blush vis-a-vis this administration, we lost our liberty.

Also, the fact that 60 years of indoctrination in public (union run) schools where pictures of Che Rivera — not George Washington — are hung & children are taught how badly western culture treated the black/brown/red man, hasn’t helped.

Nothing will come of it. Perhaps some low level operative along the chain of responsibility will lose his or her job or get a slap on the wrist. The real criminals and incompetents will go unpunished and probably be rewarded for executing the cover up so well.

I do not have faith or trust in our government. I do not believe it to be on the side of the American people. I am very sorry to say that, but that is how I feel about it these days.

How far we have fallen, all the while telling ourselves we are climbing to greater heights.

We are accepting and embracing things all in the name of inclusiveness and political correctness. Things which are poison to the well of freedom and liberty. If our population has truly become so ill informed and self serving as what seems to have been displayed in Obama’s re-election, then we have witnessed the death of America as we have known it and as it was intended to be.

Sad days. Very sad.

legendtwo on November 8, 2012 at 8:15 AM

Yes they are. Nothing to report.

Besides, the MSM has more important things to report on, like why don’t dogs and cats have their own currency and why can’t plants get passports?

Gatsu on November 8, 2012 at 8:15 AM

The Won II left those men twisting in the wind simply because he didn’t want to “offend” the Muslims. If I have been following this correctly there were forces available, or gunships available, that would have at least saved the SEALS. He needs to be held accountable, but as others have stated he will be given a pass by the media.

I think “soft tyranny” explains it very well.

I agree, however, don’t expect Obama supporters to believe that
their beloved “The One” is not being persecuted by repubs just
because he 1) is black and 2) won the election.

That said, I don’t care anymore what they think since I know that
they don’t think at all. The rule of law and pursuit of justice
should move forward regardless of the consequences for repubs.

We will never have our country back if we keep ignoring the
criminal behavior of our government when it is convenient to do so.

OT but somewhat related. When will cHillary resign as SOS? If as reported that sKerry replaces her, Brown gets a second crack at reelection. And with her status as private citizen, will she finally throw Oboobi under her bus over Libya?

AH_C on November 8, 2012 at 8:18 AM

It no longer matters. Even if Issa and company somehow managed to get 218 votes for impeachment, there will be fewer than 40 votes for conviction in the Senate. Honestly, because over half of America now just wants free <expletive deleted> and doesn’t give a <expletive deleted> about anything else, and expressed that in the wake of the Benghazi attack, I can’t work up the outrage I had for the RepublicRATs who voted against Clinton’s impeachment for those RepublicRATs who decide to kill this inquiry.

The 2008 election shocked me because the electorate believed “Hope & Change” was a legitimate platform to run on.

The 2012 election stunned me because the electorate proved that they don’t care about unemployment, inflation, green energy boondoggles, F&F, and so many more issues.

The “I am entitled class” has taken over and have a leader who gives them what they want…Republicans will be vilified for even attempting to hurt the ‘provider of free stuff’! The best thing for R’s to do is just step out of tgw way….let the bad stuff happen.

Two days ago the American public ignored the most disastrous administration, the most feckless set of demorat challengers, the most criminal gaggle of morons to ever run for office and blithely voted scum after scum into our highest and most powerful political offices.

What makes you think they will pay ANY attention to this, especially when they need to dig five layers deep into the blogosphere to find any credible information?

A friend on mine is a manager at a large PEO- employee leasing firm- and they received a DOL survey requesting current “as of” a certain date the ratio of part time to full time employees they contract with. Now mind you, their client companies determine the full or part time status, but from the details of the survey requested, he tells me Labor Dept will be all over the shift to part time employment and he says they expect the DOL will be changing employment law to give part time workers similar status as full time ones. More costs for everyone involved.

The things that we think matter when it comes to judging the worth of a President do not matter at all to large swaths of the electorate. It wasn’t just about abortion. They thought women would not be able to do anything, including vote.

That’s the stupidity that runs rampant. The ignorance of the American Constitutional system is astounding, especially among the “new majority” (youth and minority vote), and this is by design.

A little thing like a dead ambassador and shameless lies about a video being the cause will do absolutely nothing to hurt Obama because he is Obama. He is the coolest, you know. And any bad things are the fault of Bush and rich people.

This will go nowhere.

Mr. Arrogant on November 8, 2012 at 9:21 AM

Thanks HOTAIR for keeping this up front. The msm can ignore it all they want, they’ve already shown what a worthless lot they are for the most part and thinking they’re going to change is a fool’s errand. They’re only good at reporting what Beyonce says or the latest Lohan blunders. But there is a committee investigating and somehow they will get to the truth and justice will be done because unlike the media, they take security breaches and incompetence seriously. The president will probably come out unscathed like presidents usually do, but the State Department probably won’t.

scalleywag on November 8, 2012 at 9:26 AM

WE MUST takeover the Media…….or we will NEVER win another National election.

Because if we do……then WE feed the low information voters like the current Bootlicking media does.

Precisely . . . and that’s where a large portion of conservative money should go. Buy the media outlets, change the narratives and neutralize the left’s propaganda machines. When you control the message you will win. As a single media entity Fox lacks the capability to overcome the massive left wing media propaganda machines in this country. If the GOP just stumbles into the next elections without big changes in the way they function, they will again be stomped to the mat.

rplat on November 8, 2012 at 9:30 AM

perhaps we should also ask questions about who ordered the sudden high-profile investigation into Nakoula’s probation status — and why.

AND I want to see the paper trail of the conspiracy to blame his video. When was it first mentioned internally, by whom, and to whom?

How did having solid evidence work out during the Clinton era? IIRC not one Democrat looked at the evidence. What makes you think this will be any different. The media, the dims and the people don’t seem to care.

chemman on November 8, 2012 at 9:48 AM

Just a reminder. It isn’t going to matter.

JellyToast on November 8, 2012 at 9:51 AM

He should be impeached, but that won’t happen. What Obama’s actions have done had made it open season on United States diplomat missions abroad. The man who made the movie has been sentenced to one year in prison for a parole violation. When was the last time that has happened? Obama rules, America falls.

SC.Charlie on November 8, 2012 at 9:52 AM

Yes. But regardless of what is found, I do hope you all are aware that the only outlets which will report the results are talk radio, conservative blogging sites and fox news, all of which are destined for the dustbin of history. NOT because there isn’t a market for other ideas but because the FCC will close them down and the UN proposals to control the internet will be passed.

And while I was listening to the renewal of the House-Senate fight over the fiscal cliff this morning, it occured to me that the House has absolutely no choice but to go along. It won’t make any difference one way or the other because the 800,000 jobs to be lost under the President’s punish the rich scheme will happen anyway. All the Republicans in the House can do is stand before the firing squad and serve as Obama and Reid’s whipping boy. When the implosion happens, it will be the recalitrant Republicans who caused it and Hollywood will issue the hunt and kill order for all Republicans by their loyal fans.

It will happen.

Portia46 on November 8, 2012 at 9:52 AM

Oh, another thing. I AM thankful that there shall be some attention given to this by the House and that there will be efforts to call the guilty to account–although there will be no account. The majority of Americans do NOT care. They really, really don’t, but the investigation by the few left who do must be done to honor the sacrifice those who died made.

Perhaps we could also hold hearings while we may to honor the military dead in Afghanistan who died because of Obama’s rules of engagement and his odd notion that you can civilize the uncivilized and ignorant.

Sometime between now and Christmas (enjoy this one—it’s probably our last), I plan on a trip to Arlington to weap for and apologize to those who died so feral Obamabots could call filthy names and destroy human beings while the Commander In Chief applauds and laughs.

Portia46 on November 8, 2012 at 10:02 AM

It doesn’t matter.
Those four dead Americans deserve that the thinking public knows what this administration did to them. It doesn’t matter if there is impeachment, it doesn’t matter if no one reports it.

IF this WH was using those people in that embassy for a swap with the Blind Sheik that needs to be on record, somewhere. If he just went to bed and then to Vegas……well at least it wasn’t a set up.

Also, I do not think Obama can stand 4 years of pressure. Any investigation is just another straw on that camel’s back and it is a weak one.

ORconservative on November 8, 2012 at 10:06 AM

Now that Obama has a second term, why doesn’t he appoint Susan Rice to the ambassadorship of Libya?

I hear there’s an opening.

GarandFan on November 8, 2012 at 10:08 AM

Oh I thought now that the regime was holding on to power that this would all go away?

AnnaS on November 8, 2012 at 10:14 AM

I agree with everyone on this board who said that this doesn’t matter. We are now living in “post-law” America. The law is what the regime says it is.

Pelosi delende est on November 8, 2012 at 8:32 AM

Yep. I agree with everyone who agreed that this doesn’t matter and will go nowhere.

PatriotGal2257 on November 8, 2012 at 10:16 AM

I noticed on the just-released portion of the CBS interview that, when Kroft starts out by asserting to Obama that “you went out of your way” to avoid labeling the attack as terrorism, Obama can be very clearly heard saying “Right” in agreement.

That makes it clear he was lying at the debate, complete with Crowley’s cover.

At this point I don’t think it matters a bit though.

The coming decline will overshadow everything anyway.

I assumed the Constitution was the law, how silly of me. Politicians claim we are a nation of laws yet they pass laws and exempt themselves from them. We have a Commander if Chief that watched in real time as they were murdered Americans setting lasers and did nothing to save them NOTHING! Our Congress, one third of our Government also does nothing, Pardon me, they are investigating (BS) this almost two month old crises. Where is our laws? People should be jailed already but they are not. Our Nation of law is a joke but I’m not laughing.

mixplix on November 8, 2012 at 10:41 AM

According to this info delivered to Rush Limbaugh, it was not simply a matter of WH failure to protect, the WH did not even have to give the OK for military protective action as it would have been delivered automatically according to protocols. I.E, military protection must have been stopped explicitly by Obama who knew that Stevens life was in peril.

Will this come up in the investigations?

I received a survey about my travel and leisure plans from something called the Department of Commerce. I don’t believe any such animal exists – otherwise, why would Das Furher be talking about adding a “Secretary of Business”?

Dear Ed, Allahpundit and Hot Air:

This Blog has ONE post – ONE on this MOST URGENT of topics. The REST of your blog is Littered with the Eye-Candy FLUFF that the Mainstream Media WANTS YOU to focus on. You should have 10 posts on this Story to RAISE it Profile – and 10 Posts on FIRING John Boehner – who is the Democrats CHOICE for House Speaker.

You are DOING THE BIDDING of The Mainstream Media!

You are NOT ONLY FAILING - you HELPING THE ENEMY!!

williamg on November 8, 2012 at 10:55 AM

He stopped it because he knew this was going to happen. The terrorists just were not supposed to kill Stevens. Allegedly.
This is another botched plan of the WH.
Number one disgusting aspect is their complete disregard for human life. That we knew.
Number two is that it illustrates once again, the fundamental misunderstanding of who and what our enemies are. The attackers tortured and killed Stevens because that is what they do. It really doesn’t matter what the plan is.

Another Dem scandal:

(Michael) Sneed has learned U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., who handily won re-election Tuesday despite a lengthy stay at Mayo Clinic for depression and bipolar disorder, is in the midst of plea discussions with the feds probing his alleged misuse of campaign funds

.

Oh yeah, the day after he gets reelected.
