Video: Romney concession speech
posted at 1:40 am on November 7, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
We heard it as we were going off the air on the Hugh Hewitt Show marathon — a classy end to a disappointing evening. Mitt Romney graciously conceded defeat to Barack Obama in the presidential election after nearly two years of campaigning, offering his prayers for Obama’s efforts and for America’s future:
“Paul [Ryan] and I have left everything on the field … we have given our all to this campaign,” he said, adding, “I so wish I had been able to fulfill your hopes to lead this country in a different direction,” but that he would pray for the current president.
He also thanked his chosen running mate, saying, “Besides my wife Ann, Paul was the best choice I ever made.”
He went on to thank his family, especially his wife, Ann. “She would have been a wonderful first lady,” he told the crowd.
He cautioned against partisan politics in the days and months to come, saying the he would “pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation.”
“We can’t risk partisan bickering … we citizens have to rise to the occasion.”
I’ll have more thoughts on this in the morning, but figured you’d want a chance to comment on the speech tonight.

All I know is Palin was the reason the 2 folks in my family voted Obama last time. They just didn’t vote this time.

Absolutely none of it makes sense to me. But then, if it did, I would not have been so wrong. I cannot understand how Mitt did not get a massive majority of Indies, for example, or how so few middle class suburban white voters failed to show up.
Americans are united in their disgust with our government and yet we voted to give them all another term in office. We have the government we deserve.
MJBrutus on November 7, 2012 at 6:27 AM
Problem is that most “swing voters” would not have believed it. You would have. I would have. But most of them would not have.

Dongemaharu on November 7, 2012 at 6:27 AM
One reason it’s a mystery is that we were exceeding our 2008 numbers in early voting, and in absentee ballots. And the fact that Mitt was drawing huge crowds right up until the day of the election. And every poll showed that we had more intensity/enthusiasm than the Dems.

Romney’s speech said it all. The typical “nonpartisan” bull. Sure. Don’t fight it. When the bus is going over the cliff just grin and bear it if half the passengers refuse to use the emergency brake.
This is no longer Americans bickering over small things. THIS IS OUR SURVIVAL AS A FREE PEOPLE. In 1800 there would be militias in the street. But today it’s the moderate loser telling us to just settle back and conform to a new unconstitutional system. Sure. Just blow off the constitution.
But our problem has not been Romney. IT’S THE PEOPLE STUPID! Or, more to the truth; IT’S THE STUPID PEOPLE!. Now we don’t need appeasers. We need a fighter. Obviously there are none in today’s Republican Party.
This will finally split the party and it will take two election cycles to form a fighting coalition against those who will turn their head and conform. And in eight years it will be too late. Many of us said this election would tell us what kind of people we have become. And now we know.
It’s everyone for himself.

Hasn’t early voting been expanded dramatically in several states this election cycle?
Large crowds don’t always translate into votes but even so how did they compare to Palin’s in 2008? That would be the measure wouldn’t it?
Lastly voter intensity isn’t voter numbers. Those who were going to vote for Romney may simply have been the more dedicated Republican core.
I would have to see some evidence of widespread corruption to believe that those votes were just ‘disappeared‘ somehow. You can’t do something that big and leave no trace.

All this banging the table and saying the Medja are mean to Republicans won’t get us anywhere. Democrats will laugh at our whining and the Medja will just do it all the more because it’s so effective. Not a strategy. Calling out the media didn’t work for Palin and it won’t work for anyone else.
Obviously something went very wrong somewhere. I honestly don’t know the answer yet. It’s probably somewhere in the middle of Obama cheated and Romney and the GOP made a blunder. But I don’t accept that the Obamacare repeal was high on Americans’ agenda and yet we just voted Barry in to keep it. I don’t believe that all those small crowds and generally dejected appearance by Barry meant he was right all along. However, the answer won’t be found tonight.
I hope we can keep up this debate, we need to.

TELL ME IF THIS MAKES SENSE:
POTUS VOTE TOTALS:
1996 – 94,683,948
2000 – 101,455,899 (+7%)
2004 – 121,069,054 (+19%)
2008 – 129,389,711 (+7%)
2012 – 115,562,372 (-11%) <<< WTF?
So after at least 7% voter growth every election since 1996, in 2012 we drop 11%!!!! Has anything like this ever happened before? If you look at voters as a % of population the drop is even more staggering.
And yet, polling stations had to remain open extra hours because of their sheer volume of voters?

Many are saying it was the women’s and Hispanic vote that put O up. Makes sense to me. Here in Wi the Women’s issue was talked about a lot in gatherings. And of course the rich people need to pay more. It was more so that than anything. Work is going to suck. And we are going to see even more job losses here now. Small employers are going to lay off rather than comply with O care. Welfare rolls will increase.

50/50 chance Rush is going to say today it’s time to panic.
Folks… it’s been a nice country. The magnitude of what took place last night just cannot be understated. America is officially over. We all lost. The Supreme Court will now go truly Marxist. Our economy is going to go third world. Our military will be decimated. Our nuclear warheads are going to be dismantled. The DOJ is going to be emboldened. None of these investigations are going to go anywhere.
I also firmly believe that individual Republicans are going to be targeted by Obama.
Obama has nothing to stop him. Nothing. Not the press. Not the GOP. Not the Supreme Court. Not the American people because they just voted to re-elect him. In his first term, as bad as it was, he still had an election to face. Now he doesn’t.
And whether the Democrats won this by fraud or a stupid electorate.. it’s over. Because if it was fraud the fraud will only escalate and the people are not going to get any smarter.
God have mercy because Obama is not going to.

Someone needs to do a state by state comparison of 2012 v. 2008 vote totals, especially in a few of the swing states, otherwise we are chasing our tails.
VorDaj on November 7, 2012 at 6:54 AM
The commenters saying that are likely ‘nistas who didn’t bother to vote this time or went third party. They didn’t want Romney to win in the first place, so their opinions on his campaign don’t mean anything.
The vote totals are a surprise given everything we saw with enthusiasm numbers, early voting, etc. We know it wasn’t a shift TO Obama, but I guess we’ll find out who didn’t vote for Mitt that did vote for McCain and why in the coming days. It’s possible Republicans out west stayed home once they saw the results coming in back East, but I don’t know.
I think Romney won indies, but it’s clear the base did not come out in the numbers it needed to. So, not only can we thank Obama sheep for voting for four more years of garbage, we can also tip our hat to Republicans who sat it out. Heckuva job, guys. We’re not winning national elections again until portions of our base stop making the perfect the enemy of the good.
changer1701 on November 7, 2012 at 6:54 AM
I still have major concerns about widespread voter fraud and voter machine manipulation, but it doesn’t really matter. I saw nothing to suggest Obama would be able to honestly win the popular vote, even with his media support.
How many fewer American jobs will there be after another four years?

THINK ABOUT THIS:
This year was the most money ever spent on political advertising. People on both sides were hyper-motivated. Polling locations were jammed.
23 million fewer voters than would have voted based upon normal growth.
IT SIMPLY DOES NOT ADD UP. Something very strange and very corrupt happened with the vote counting this year. I am willing to bet the software was named Rapture because 23 million voters simply disappeared.
mitchellvii on November 7, 2012 at 6:55 AM
Not saying you might have a bit of a point. However, not buying it. First, 2 million are short in NY and NJ. Second, they are still adding votes in Cali, Wash, and Oregon. Thats another 4 million. Then there might be some absentee and provisional ballots. A few states are not at 100%. Etc. I predict a month from now it will be near 125 million, with the NE hurricane factor on top.
Second, I think the Palin, Mormon, and Obama factors helped in 2008 and hurt in 2012. I am not surprised at a lower turnout.
Finally, I can buy them cheating in one or two states. But every battle ground state? We underperformed everywhere.

The media did lie to you, but not in the way you assume. The MSM lied to you by acting as if the election was closer than it was, because a close election = ratings, = money for them via advertisements. You were also lied to by conservative bloggers and pundits who saw poll after poll and just said “I refuse to believe it.” You bought into scam artists like unskewed polls.com. You listened to B.S. about “party ID” in the polls over sampling Republicans. In short, you got hoodwined by the conservative media.
How can you trust the conservative media on anything when they have proven to be so entirely wrong in this election.
libfreeordie on November 7, 2012 at 6:56 AM
Something seems wrong with the vote totals.
There more I think about it, something is queer.
It definitely needs to be explained. What it’s saying is that John McCain & Sarah Palin brought out a lot of voters who decided to stay home.
That’s giving me a problem.
1. Those who voted for McCain for military/patriotic reasons, after seeing 0bama’s bungling of the military, would seem even MORE likely to vote R in 2012, to preserve the nation.
2. Those who voted for McCain for experience reasons, having seen 0bama’s amateur performance, would be more likely to vote R in 2012.
3. Those who voted for McCain because they hate black people would not likely be converted by 0bama’s performance.
4. Those who voted for Palin because she was a woman would have been traditionalist women, because Palin opposes hardcore feminism.
5. Those who voted for Palin because she brought real conservatism to the ticket, after seeing how much WORSE 0bama is than advertised, would certainly vote in even greater numbers to eject 0bama.
I can’t think that more than a very small quotient actually would stay home/vote against Romney, when 0bama poses so much more of a threat to traditional values.
Add in that Romney is 100x more well spoken than McCain, better looking, for a matinee-idol country, is knowledgeable.
Man, if I didn’t hope better, I’d say that this election was stolen by massive vote fraud.
Something really, really is eluding me here.

I don’t think that’s it at all. Obama’s turnout was way down as well. This decline in the Obama’s turnout is about the only bright spot from last night’s debacle (aside from holding the House). It suggests that there could a fairly large disaffected group of folks out there looking for another way; it suggests a possible way of forming a winning coalition if we can figure out a way to reach them. The alternative is to find a way to peal off some members of the Dem coalition, because right now, the demographics are kicking our ass…

I didn’t believe that Romney would have cut the debt.
I didn’t believe that Romney would have nominated strict constructionists to the Supremes.
I didn’t believe that Romney would have done what a President would need to do to make this government smaller and more efficient.
I didn’t believe that Romney would have fixed our broken immigration system.
For me, the bottom line is that I don’t know what Romney really believes in. So I didn’t believe in him. That’s why he didn’t get my vote.

The decrease is not all that much of a mystery. Look at Bill Keller’s site. he has 1.7 millions evangelicals pledged publicly not to vote for Romney because he is a Mormon. Many evangelicals supported Romney , but there are many like those at Bill Keller’s who stayed home. Add the Tru-cons and the ABRs, the decrease is not all that unexplainable.

I am just saying this may be the most focused and motivated the Republican base has ever been for an election.
Pew
Gallup
Rasmussen
All said party affiliation had shifted dramatically to Republicans since 2008. You can see that in the dramatic decrease in Obama voters. But Republicans just didn’t vote?
A FEW NON-CONSPIRATORIAL EXPLANATIONS:
1) Independents which polled for Romney simply did not vote.
2) Evangelicals did not vote because Romney is a Mormon and Ryan is a Catholic. If so, f*ck them.
3) Those massive lines in Republican districts on ED were a hologram.
