Polls: Virtual ties in Michigan, Pennsylvania

posted at 11:01 am on November 4, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Two media polls out in normally safe Democratic states show the presidential race in considerable flux — and pundits with few touchstones for their final calls.  First we go to Pennsylvania, where Mitt Romney has made a last-minute personal push for a state that hasn’t gone Republican in 24 years — and the new poll from the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review suggests he has a real shot at winning:

President Obama and Republican Mitt Romney entered the final days of the presidential race tied in a state that the campaigns only recently began contesting, a Tribune-Review poll shows.

The poll showed the race for Pennsylvania’s 20 electoral votes locked up at 47 percent in its final week. Romney was scheduled to campaign in the Philadelphia area on Sunday, and former President Bill Clinton planned to stump for Obama on Monday. The campaigns have begun to saturate the airwaves with millions of dollars in presidential advertising.

“They’re both in here because of exactly what you’re seeing” in this poll, said Jim Lee, president of Susquehanna Polling & Research, which surveyed 800 likely voters Oct. 29-31. Most of the interviews occurred after Hurricane Sandy inundated Eastern and Central Pennsylvania. The poll’s error margin is 3.46 percentage points.

The PTR didn’t release the poll internals, but Lee told me this week that the poll is D+7, 44/37/19.  SPR wanted to stick with one turnout model, and that closely resembles 2008′s electorate in PA.  This result matches very closely to yesterday’s SPR poll results on the Senate race in PA, also a virtual dead heat.

In Michigan, perhaps the results come as an even bigger surprise, where Obama figured to ride the auto bailouts to an easy victory.  A new poll from Foster McCollum White Baydoun of over 1900 likely voters has Romney ahead of Obama by less than one percent, 46.86%/46.24%.  The same pollster had Obama with nearly a 4-point lead before the first debate.  Also, this same poll shows Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow beating Pete Hoekstra rather easily, 50/43 — so it doesn’t appear to have a significant Republican tilt.

In fact, the sample is reasonably Democratic, although perhaps underrepresenting independents.  The D/R/I is 44/35/21; in 2008, 41/29/29, and no exit polling exists for 2010.  The poll did reweight in several categories to make up for deficiencies in demographics, as almost all pollsters do, but there are a couple of interesting points about the weighting, too.  After their initial sample only included 8% African-Americans, the pollster reweighted them to 17.5%. In 2008, though, this bloc only comprised 12% of the MI electorate.  At the same time, though, they appear to have overweighted seniors at the expense of middle-aged voters, but the two together look similar to 2008.

It looks like a surprise could be brewing in two Democratic states.

That’s true.

But it IS getting pretty close. And if the Obama GOTV machine isn’t rolling, it will at least be interesting to watch. Having no early voting makes it more difficult to get all your voters to the polls.

Obama still is a lock in PA, but it’s fun to watch it actually be competitive again.

Ras for a while has been the winter coat at the beach wearing guy. Showing the race tied with less than a week before the election means he’s still wearing a jacket at the beach, just a very thin one…like a wind-breaker.

A look at the internals shows that the smart people are going with Romney.

Resist We Much on November 4, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Bottom line is right now Obama is defending more states than Romney is defending.

Obama must take PA and OH to win. Romney only needs one and can also win with WI + NH.

In FL NC and VA oversampled Dem polls have Romney ahead.

In PA OH and WI oversampled Dem polls have Obama ahead or tied with Romney in some late breaking polls.

In all the swing states the polls are predicting for the most part a 2008 turnout and Romney is statistically tied with Obama. And yet we are told it’s a slam dunk for Obama.

If GOP turns out like enthusiasm suggest then Obama is finished.

Pennsylvania Catholic Bishops call for voting against Leftism ( PA Catholic/Orthodox – 30% )

We, the bishops of Pennsylvania, see next Tuesday (November 6), Election Day, as a day of historical challenge for our time. We propose this statement now because the upcoming elections, at every level, offer a critical opportunity for Catholics – i.e., all of us who are believers: clergy, religious, and lay alike – to exercise our civic duty and fulfill our social responsibility in a way that becomes us as aspiring saints.

Because politics is the place where competing moral visions of a society meet and struggle, our democracy depends on people of conviction fighting for what they believe in the public square, yet doing so with an abiding respect for one another. That struggle includes and depends on all of us, precisely as Catholics. For if we believe that a particular issue is gravely evil or that it will result in serious damage to society, then we have a duty, both as Catholics and as Americans, to hold political candidates accountable.

Today it is no longer the case, as it was for our country’s Founders, that religion can provide a shared moral framework and vocabulary for a pluralistic democracy. In fact, Americans would do well to realize that many of our country’s leading thinkers in law, higher education, and the social sciences simply no longer believe in the idea of inalienable natural rights guaranteed by a Creator higher than the State – one of the cornerstone principles of the American experiment.

This has serious implications because many of our most urgent political issues – ranging from the economy, immigration, and abortion to global security – raise profoundly moral questions. These questions cannot be resolved without a common understanding of right and wrong. Consider today’s aggressive efforts to redefine the nature of marriage, to exclude parental authority in the choice of the best education for their children, and to force Catholic healthcare and social services to end their ministries unless they violate their religious identities through mandated support of practices contrary to the very sanctity of human life.

As Christians we do owe an appropriate loyalty to the State. We strive to maintain good relations with civil authority. But our primary allegiance must always be to God and to God alone. As St. Thomas More once said so eloquently, we are God’s good servants first. That is the nature of our personal calling; that is our human mission; and that is something we cannot forsake without betraying our baptism. Moreover, our calling and mission as Catholics remain fully consonant with the historic American understanding of law and justice …

And so, we, the bishops of Pennsylvania, urge citizens to vote this year, and we encourage Catholics to learn what our faith believes about the issues at stake in the 2012 election … In this Year of Faith, let us bring our faith to bear on how we vote this Election Day.

And may God, in His goodness, continue to bless America…”

METHODOLOGY – This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by telephone Oct. 30-Nov. 2, 2012, among a random national sample of 1,809 likely voters, including landline and cell-phone-only respondents. The survey, conducted after Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, includes interviews with 283 likely voters in the Northeast. Results in that group are in accord with their pre-storm levels.

Partisan divisions, Democrats-Republicans-independents, are 33-29-34 percent among likely voters; they were 39-32-29 percent in the 2008 exit poll. Source

“There’s a real sense of enthusiasm for the Romney Campaign… And, on the other side, the excitement and enthusiasm is not there.”

And still absolutely no updates in 4 days now to the WaPo tracking of how people rated Dear Leader’s handling of the storm. Which means the WaPo has simply stopped asking the question, because they are not getting the same results as they did on the first day.

And no other pollster has even asked the question, probably because they know it’s cretinesque to try and derive political gain from a natural disaster.

Ace is a lot more salty than the typical blogger, so don’t be surprised by his language. He is often very funny though even if he is an Eyeorish squish like AP.

NotCoach on November 4, 2012 at 12:55 PM

They don’t really monitor the threads all that closely, you know. If it means that much to you, shoot them an email.

KingGold on November 4, 2012 at 12:47 PM

Thank you for that advice. I just sent an email. I suggest we all do the same. I just think it’s sad that we have a better chance of winning this election than we have of banning a troll at HotAir.

Totally understandable, and you’re among friends. But if you go to liberal enclaves, wear a poncho. *L*

KOOLAID2 on November 4, 2012 at 12:54 PM

An idea would be to announce it on several threads, then be the first to post on a new thread (not one that would be highly flammable) that this is the one. Any commenting could be done on a thread specified.

cozmo on November 4, 2012 at 12:57 PM

The storm did nothing else than basically end the election. No one is paying attention anymore. It was a big boon to Romney, actually, because it probably pre-empted some sort of last-minute 0bama October Surprise that no one will pay attention to now, with the media center of the world in chaos.

Bush hates black people

Sandy hates Kenyan/Indonesians.

It’s true. They love baby killing. Counting on the Catholics is not gonna do it. Now the evangelicals… they are coming out big for Romney and will put him over the top in Ohio.

I’m actually going to wear my deer-hunting camo long-sleeve :-)

It has gotten people p.o.ed at me before in L.A. and so I’m going to stick it in their faces.

cane_loader on November 4, 2012 at 12:58 PM

. If I had any say in the matter I would say let brainfreeordie stay until he does something ban-worthy.

NotCoach on November 4, 2012 at 12:53 PM

There you go. I certainly don’t want an echo chamber in here. And some of his positions have validity.

I don’t know what he said as DTMH to get banned.

But I’ve walked the line a few times.

Lanceman on November 4, 2012 at 12:58 PM

Ace is great, Gabe Malor is great, the others are pretty good, and their number-cruncher, CAC, is sharp as a tack.

KingGold on November 4, 2012 at 12:49 PM

You are aware that Ace intentionally mislead his readers on election day 08 by saying how well things were going when he knew Obama had won?

Both Ace and CAC are partisan hacks who will NEVER give the honest info.

Salty talk doesn’t bother me in the least. I’m amazed, given some of the trolls here and one in particular, I haven’t yet let fly.

For as witty as Allah is most of the time, Ace at his best blows him out of the water.

I don’t see how Obama has been winning all along, yet somehow Sandy “saved” his job.

goflyers on November 4, 2012 at 12:49 PM

See my post @ 12:53 PM. There is absolutely no evidence to prove that Sandy “saved” his job. None.

But for what it’s worth, the C-BS affiliate in Minneapolis did an online “poll” yesterday about Dear Leader’s handling of Sandy, and only 23% of those responding said it would help him win. The other 77% said it would either make no difference, or would even hurt his chances.

cozmo on November 4, 2012 at 12:43 PM

It is so amazing to me when I see people here complain about gumbyandpokey, yet they’ll still interact with and indulge him. It’s like watching someone deep in debt worry aloud about her financial state while she continues to friviously spend her money.

It makes me go, “WTF?” – I just don’t get it…

Anti-Control on November 4, 2012 at 12:59 PM

Tell ya’ what, you get every body organized to boycott just one thread, and I’ll concede that it works. Heck, I’d even help.

One thread with only the trolls posting would send a clear message.

cozmo on November 4, 2012 at 12:50 PM

I’ll put on my walking shoes and join that picket line with you. But the thread needs to be one related to polls, since that seems to be the ones that draws the little clay boy like flies to sh*t.

Flora Duh on November 4, 2012 at 1:00 PM

to you folks crying and screaming and whining like the ultimate victim herself Ms. Palin … all you have to do is have Ed or Allah ask me to resign my registration … they don’t have to ban me they just have to ask … but maybe they wish you folks would just engage in reasonable dialogue and stop your sad insults etc…

Instead of banning Gumby, we could just install an “ignore button” so that we wouldn’t have to read his obvious attempts to rile up conservative commenters.

DeathtotheSwiss on November 4, 2012 at 11:57 AM

I just scroll past his posts, and most of the ones replying to him. It works just fine. I think it would be helpful if the commenter’s name was at the top rather than the bottom of their post.

gumbyandpokey on November 4, 2012 at 12:58 PM

Actually, he forthrightly confessed following ’08 and ’10 that he had been too optimistic about long-shot races. There was nothing intentional about it. And he’s been more measured about his optimism this time. In a way, he’s the perfect counterpoint to our resident Eeyore, Allahpundit.

Not that a lying hack like you could appreciate that, gumball.

I believe He will remain with us Americans as He has since the moment of our founding and bring us through our present peril, not unscathed, but mindful of our continued reliance on Him to live out the concepts of our Declaration.

Lanceman on November 4, 2012 at 11:59 AM

They lost 4 hours of voting yesterday because of two “suspicious” packages located outside the polling place. So the question is, who would want that to happen in a predominately R area? This backfired on the scummy dems. The only extension they got is in a R area!
