Gillespie: Hate to break it to you, Team O, but the map has expanded

posted at 7:31 pm on November 4, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Earlier this week, certain Team Obama members and loyalists insisted that Team Romney’s relatively late-in-the-game push into some new battlegrounds definitively means that Team R has at last figured out that they cannot win with the electoral map they originally planned, characterizing their movements as “desperate” and “flailing” to mark off some more territory. Obama campaign senior adviser David Plouffe echoed those sentiments on Sunday, contending that Team Obama is not at all in the defense-mode that might appear to the naked eye, but that they’re actually in offense-mode.

Citing the president’s slight leads in battleground states and the upper hand on early voting, Obama campaign senior adviser David Plouffe sounded confident about Obama’s chances for reelection.

“We’ve always known this was going to be a close race, but it is going to be decided in the battleground states, and we think in those states … we have an important lead,” Plouffe said on ABC’s This Week. “I’m confident two days from now the president will be reelected. We have the support to win this election.”

Plouffe concentrated on Obama’s ground game, especially in Pennsylvania, where the Romney campaign has focused attention in recent days. Plouffe called it a “desperate ploy at the end of a campaign,” and said Romney would have to win two-thirds of independent voters there to carry the state.

As much as Team Obama would no doubt like us to believe that Team Romney’s recent ventures into Pennsylvania are merely the deluded backfirings of a broken campaign machine, there was a pretty organic surge in Romney’s direction after that first game-changing presidential debate, and Team Romney is now just helping to fuel it along. Picking up on what’s already happening is not a “desperate” move, it’s a savvy one.

Romney also leads in a lot of polls of independents by healthy margins, and as for the early voting in battleground states, does that mean in states like, oh, say… Ohio, where the swing towards Republicans in early voting has knocked out Obama’s winning margin there from 2008, perhaps?

Team O is aggressively pushing this narrative that the Romney campaign has gone full-on madcap in their last-ditch push to ‘expand the map,’ but, news flash: The electoral map has expanded. The results of Obama’s big-government spend-happy policies, not to mention their waging a severely negative and small-potatoes campaign that hasn’t exactly hearkened back to the Hopenchange spirit of 2008, just means that not as many people are as pumped about voting for him this time around, plain and simple. The Obama campaign won’t admit it, of course, but as Romney campaign senior adviser Ed Gillespie summed up on ABC earlier, our incumbent president is in deep trouble.

You know, four years ago — it’s — it’s a remarkable juxtaposition here that Mitt Romney will be in the suburbs of Philadelphia today, and you know, four years ago, Barack Obama was in Indiana. When you look at where this map has gone, it reflects the — the change and the direction and the momentum toward Gov. Romney. And the fact is that a state like Pennsylvania being in play, a poll out today showing Michigan a dead heat, you know, this — the map has expanded. Wisconsin, Minnesota has expanded our way. We feel very confident in terms of where we are in the — in the target states. We’ve been able to expand into Pennsylvania while fully funding and staying current with everything we need to be doing in Florida and Virginia and Ohio and all of the other target states.

Plouffe doesn’t actually believe the BS he’s peddling, he’s just putting on his game face. What’s he supposed to do, actually admit that Obama is on the ropes? Not likely.

That rally in PA was insane. So many people. 30K+. Ryan went to a hangar in MN and it overflowed. No matter where they go, too many people show up.

“Dwarfs the Bush ’04 rally crowd at the same farm.”

“Traffic backup at Edgewood Shopping Cntr, 1.5 miles to Romney’s rally at Shady Brook Farm, Yardley, PA”

“WOW! One of the biggest crowds I have ever seen. This is quite the welcome in Pennsylvania.”

“At Romney Victory Rally in Yardley PA. More security here than #Benghazi at least 25k-30k”

The crowd was definitely electric. And this was after Mitt was delayed. The Mitt love was insane.

CNN national poll tied at 49%. Romney up 22 with independents. Sample is D+11 (was D+7 in 08, even in 2004/2010). Taken 11/2-4.

In comparison, Reagan had it easy…he only had to fix Jimma’ Carters mess.

Romney will have to fix the cumulative disasters started by FDR (SS), started by LBJ (16 trillion poverty spending), Clinton moral cliff we fell over and his continuing Fannie Mae crisis, add in GW spending without his requested Fannie and sS reform, and of course the obscene criminal spending of Obama.

Hummer53 on November 4, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Intrade had John Kerry at 95% on election day 2004.

Even still, Intrade is not what it once was. It’s very hard for Americans to open an account since Dodd/Frank (you need to send a physical check to Ireland along with copies of utility bills and such), which means that the site is sparsely populated with mostly Britons and other Commonwealth types.

Even with all that said, Romney is running around 35% there. That’s not actually that low just two days out from the election. Remember, that’s not a poll number. It means Romney actually has a 1-in-3 shot to win the election according to (mainly) people who don’t know a thing about American politics and really do nothing but chase polls. McCain was around 10% by now, IIRC.

Predictive Markets Update:

Obama odds increase to a 3.5:1 favorite:

Wed: 2.0:1
Thur: 2.1:1
Fri: 2.15:1
Sat: 2.25:1
Thur 3:0:1
Fri: 3.25:1
sat: 3.25:1
Sun: 3.5:1
Mon: ?
Tue: Election Day!

The Chritie bump is in effect. Chritie’s compliments were a refreshing change of pace. More money keeps piling into the Obama wagers. Romney is desperately searching for another path to 270 with weird ads and visits to safely Democratic states. Obama is now an 8 to 1 favorite in Nevada, and a 5.5 to 1 favorite in Wisconsin. Nevada may be pulled off the wagering board soon due to “lock” status. Add Ohio elctoral votes (3.25:1 favorite) and it is all over with 271 votes. Romney is only a fovorite in Florida and North Carolina.

Obama has led this election from day one. At his lowest point, Obama was about a 1.5:1 favorite, but he has been increasing ever since to the current 3.5 to 1 favorite status. Remember all of the sites, pundits, pollsters, etc that have fed you misinformation the whole time during this election cycle. The next cycle you will be more prepared to understand what it really going on.

Think for yourselves and do your own research..

Please accept my apologies. I’ve been on edge and my impulse control is not that strong. Ergo the PG-13 exclamation.

freedomfirst on November 4, 2012 at 8:25 PM

But after Mitt wins they’ll all be gone by then. There won’t be a single one around after about 20:00 Eastern time. :-(

MJBrutus on November 4, 2012 at 8:20 PM

Pffttt, you don’t know OUR trolls very well do you. They’ll be here spouting on and on an on about how their victory was stolen by some unknown entity and it was not supposed to be this way! WAH WAH WAH!

Don’t blame this on me! I am usually among the first to jump into the mud with them.

I believe I goaded you into this.

Just got an email from mom in Florida: “Do not forget to change your clock on Sunday and your President on Tuesday.”

Archivarix on November 4, 2012 at 8:22 PM

heh! mom gots a sense of humor!

ted c on November 4, 2012 at 8:24 PM

Mom has only registered in 2012 (was scared of jury duty), and voted early. Her West Palm Beach senior community used to be a stalwart Obama stronghold. Now it’s split about 50:50, with Israel being the primary issue of discontent. I’d like to see Ogabe blame Bush for that

Archivarix on November 4, 2012 at 8:29 PM

I’m not going to be here on Tuesday.

1) I almost imploded in 2004 watching the results come in.

2) I’m not sure I will be able to stand the lefty-fest which HotGas will tolerate.

3) The comments will come so fast that even trying to discuss our favorite cheeses will be futile.

I don’t care who did it; I’m just glad someone got this herd of cats to head in the same direction and actually execute the troll avoidance maneuver.

/Yes, I know I’m guilty of engaging as well. From the little I’ve seen today those, this is refreshing.

We left one out the other night, you know. You mentioned cheese in a can, but we completely overlooked Cheez-Whiz.

thatsafactjack on November 4, 2012 at 8:30 PM

HitNRun on November 4, 2012 at 8:22 PM

And, I’ll bet, on Intrade or anywhere, that the Obama campaign is gaming Intrade on this, as might have been done in 2008 as well. They accept foreign contributions left and right, and go out of their way not to verify credit cards or addresses for their own contributions.

I’m sure Soros, et al., have figured a way to completely scam Intrade and are doing it. I don’t know what the total pot is right now, but it would be coffee money for him and the many other non-Americans who want to keep Obama in the WH.

TXUS on November 4, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Maybe we should offer them all microwave pizza for a month if they make their troll posts over at Kos.

NOMOBO on November 4, 2012 at 8:20 PM

…you think they would jump in…with the pizza?

KOOLAID2 on November 4, 2012 at 8:31 PM

umm, that should be “From the little I’ve seen today though, this is refreshing.”

MJBrutus on November 4, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Uh huh. I shook the magic Eight Ball today and it said: (I kid you not!) Romney will be President 2012! No, really, it did!
Naaahhh….I have faith in the American people…they are sick to death of this communist/lib/marxist/lieing, et al et al POS….. :):):):):)

Okay you folks just gettin’ here; trollcott means ignore the trolls.

It has worked all day! Except for just a few folks.

cozmo on November 4, 2012 at 7:43 PM

We deserve better than to suffer the trolls we neither want nor need.
