Gillespie: Hate to break it to you, Team O, but the map has expanded

posted at 7:31 pm on November 4, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Earlier this week, certain Team Obama members and loyalists insisted that Team Romney’s relatively late-in-the-game push into some new battlegrounds definitively means that Team R has at last figured out that they cannot win with the electoral map they originally planned, characterizing their movements as “desperate” and “flailing” to mark off some more territory. Obama campaign senior adviser David Plouffe echoed those sentiments on Sunday, contending that Team Obama is not at all in the defense-mode that might appear to the naked eye, but that they’re actually in offense-mode.

Citing the president’s slight leads in battleground states and the upper hand on early voting, Obama campaign senior adviser David Plouffe sounded confident about Obama’s chances for reelection.

“We’ve always known this was going to be a close race, but it is going to be decided in the battleground states, and we think in those states … we have an important lead,” Plouffe said on ABC’s This Week. “I’m confident two days from now the president will be reelected. We have the support to win this election.”

Plouffe concentrated on Obama’s ground game, especially in Pennsylvania, where the Romney campaign has focused attention in recent days. Plouffe called it a “desperate ploy at the end of a campaign,” and said Romney would have to win two-thirds of independent voters there to carry the state.

As much as Team Obama would no doubt like us to believe that Team Romney’s recent ventures into Pennsylvania are merely the deluded backfirings of a broken campaign machine, there was a pretty organic surge in Romney’s direction after that first game-changing presidential debate, and Team Romney is now just helping to fuel it along. Picking up on what’s already happening is not a “desperate” move, it’s a savvy one.

Romney also leads in a lot of polls of independents by healthy margins, and as for the early voting in battleground states, does that mean in states like, oh, say… Ohio, where the swing towards Republicans in early voting has knocked out Obama’s winning margin there from 2008, perhaps?

Team O is aggressively pushing this narrative that the Romney campaign has gone full-on madcap in their last-ditch push to ‘expand the map,’ but, news flash: The electoral map has expanded. The results of Obama’s big-government spend-happy policies, not to mention their waging a severely negative and small-potatoes campaign that hasn’t exactly hearkened back to the Hopenchange spirit of 2008, just means that not as many people are as pumped about voting for him this time around, plain and simple. The Obama campaign won’t admit it, of course, but as Romney campaign senior adviser Ed Gillespie summed up on ABC earlier, our incumbent president is in deep trouble.

You know, four years ago — it’s — it’s a remarkable juxtaposition here that Mitt Romney will be in the suburbs of Philadelphia today, and you know, four years ago, Barack Obama was in Indiana. When you look at where this map has gone, it reflects the — the change and the direction and the momentum toward Gov. Romney. And the fact is that a state like Pennsylvania being in play, a poll out today showing Michigan a dead heat, you know, this — the map has expanded. Wisconsin, Minnesota has expanded our way. We feel very confident in terms of where we are in the — in the target states. We’ve been able to expand into Pennsylvania while fully funding and staying current with everything we need to be doing in Florida and Virginia and Ohio and all of the other target states.

Obama has already lost Ohio, I’m afraid. As the first clip showed, Republicans have made up in early voting the winning advantage that Obama had in 2008. So Obama will have to hope that Romney does worse than McCain on election day. That’s impossible. The reason it was so bad in 2008 is that many Romney voters stayed home.

So get this. You’re basically arguing that Romney voters will stay home again because Romeny is on the ballot. Does not compute.

Probably influenced by the polls the media puts out which seem heavily biased for Obama.

In Chester County PA (SEPA) I have seen no Obama signs. I think Romney will get all of the state but Philadelphia. Pittsburgh has enough coal influence Romney should get it. Final count will depend on relative turnout. Bad Philadelphia turnout, good elsewhere, Romney should take PA.

Well Minnesotans were waiting for this chance to be heard and boy did they take advantage of it.

Cold day/Vikings game/deer hunting opening weekend and a HUGE crowd.

Bachmann, Kline, Paulsen, and Craavack all spoke. I shook hands with Craavack – handsome, outgoing and friendly man. Bachmann and Craavack got easily the loudest applause and were the best speakers minus Ryan.

Lots of talk about ignoring the pundits about Minnesota not being a factor. Lots of talk about the misleading polls too. Everybody asked for people to man phone banks.

They played the Romney intro video from the convention, the Red Rocks ad, the election ad about November 6th (I’ve never seen this one) and the love of country/revenge ad.

Oh and they did the Pledge and the Star Spangled Banner. I couldn’t even sing the entire anthem cause I was so moved. It was very neat.

Ryan was right on time – his kids are adorable – and he had a lot of energy. He spoke a lot about Minnesota and Wisconsin being similar and had a lot of personal stories. His cousin is the GM of the Twins – had no idea.

Speech was mostly what I had heard before with some new things thrown in. Crowd was super loud and I think he was surprised at how big it was.

People back by me were yelling “right on” “Amen” and other things. Fired up was an understatement.

Worst part of the event was trying to find our car. Usually in a parking lot you look for the Mitt sticker. This event it didn’t work.

Camera crapped out on us so we didn’t get very good pictures off of the cell phone. I’ll see if I can salvage any of them.

It was so much fun.

Anybody can bet at Intrade, and it’s openly public, no verification of political identity. Which means that the Obama campaign could’ve swamped the bets to skew the results, and I certainly wouldn’t put it past them. When you set up a campaign to be able to accept contributions from anywhere and anybody, without verifying the credit cards or addresses, as has Team Obama, it’s nothing at all to do the same to an easy-access format like Intrade.

Trollcot or Trollcott?

You’re probably right, but who cares? It is working well. It smells much better in here.

DrStock on November 4, 2012 at 8:08 PM

Intrade? When money is on the line people make all sorts of stupid decisions…. circa 2005: but the housing market never goes down… but they wouldn’t give me the loan if I couldn’t pay it, right? Those guys wouldn’t take the loan if they couldn’t pay it, right?

Yeah, dude. intrade is garbage for people with foreign credit cards.

Okay you folks just gettin’ here; trollcott means ignore the trolls.

It has worked all day! Except for just a few folks.

cozmo on November 4, 2012 at 7:43 PM

Let’s keep it up, guys. It takes some discipline at first not to take the bait, but after awhile it’s easy to scroll right past them.

I refuse to let them spoil the fun especially if I’m right about Tuesday’s results.

Trollcott!!!! – great idea whoever started it.
