Bloomberg kept National Guard out of NYC because they had guns?

posted at 4:31 pm on November 4, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has been on the receiving end of a firestorm of criticism lately, particularly for his ham handed handling of the Hurricane Sandy recovery. But this story is almost too stupid to check.

Mayor Bloomberg has snubbed Borough President Markowitz’s impassioned plea to bring the National Guard to Hurricane Sandy-scarred Brooklyn — arguing that approving the Beep’s request would be a waste of federal manpower and turn the borough into a police state.

“We don’t need it,” Mayor Bloomberg said on Wednesday during a press update on the city’s ongoing Hurricane Sandy cleanup. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.”

I’m not sure, but I think we’re witnessing the complete implosion of somebody who was once considered a pretty influential politician on the rise. Yes, Bloomberg doesn’t much care for the Second Amendment and doesn’t want people to have guns. We get it. But we’re talking about the National Guard here. Has this guy completely lost his mind?

This is a time when leaders up and down the east coast are loudly singing the praises of the National Guard for their rapid deployment and efficient rescue, recovery and security work. It’s also a time when people out on Staten Island are hanging on by a thread, with looting and violence being a serious threat on top of the hurricane’s destruction. Who in their right mind even suggests that Guardsmen carrying their weapons is an issue at a time like this? I understand wanting to express your support of and confidence in the police department and the firefighters, but even some of the finest first responders in the nation are completely swamped by the magnitude of this disaster. They could use the help and the Guard stands ready to provide it.

It’s already become pretty obvious that Bloomberg’s goal is to become the counterweight to the NRA in America, so these tendencies shouldn’t come as a complete surprise. But between this and trying to go ahead with the marathon while they were still pulling bodies out of the rubble in his city, this entire tragic episode seems to have served as a spotlight on exactly how bad this guy’s management of the city has been. Hey, Mr. Mayor! Next time you’re mulling over your next idiotic decision, please try to keep the following image in mind.

So-o-o…bloomberg is too stupid to know that the Guard is a STATE organization? And that disasters like this are what the Guard exists – primarily, any more – for.

One would think that the governor – if he gives a damn about the citizens of his state – would overrule bloomy and a) send in the Guard and b) tell bloomy to get out of the way.
btw; Has anybody even heard from the governor on this yet?

A real problem that is difficult to solve is that upwards of 35% of the Guard in the NY metro area ARE NYPD and FDNY as well as Nassau and Suffolk PD. Another example of Bloomie’s rank stupidity is his claim the using the Guard for security is wasting federal manpower when in these circumstances the NY Guard is a state service NOT a federal one. I thought everyone knew that.?

DLA and other agencies are huge, when they move they can make an impact. And this in addition to other non-governmental agencies, charities, and the sheer goodwill of people trying to help.

Some highlights:

— New York National Guard distributed meals-ready-to-eat to residents at a staging area in lower Manhattan.

— More than 500 New York National Guard members are supporting crews to repair an electrical grid in Westchester and Rockland counties.

— New York National Guard members are currently involved in equipment staging, debris clearance, communications support, transportation, security and traffic control operations, aerial survey and reconnaissance, evacuations, and points of distribution.

— An aerial port of debarkation for critical power repair assets has been established at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, N.Y.

— The New Jersey National Guard has rescued more than 3,000 people and 200 pets by searching door to door in flooded areas.

— The New Jersey National Guard has assisted civil authorities with establishing shelters in Vineland, Freehold, West Orange, Glen Gardner and at the Jersey City armory.

— The New Jersey National Guard has established three fuel distribution points throughout the state and is providing mobile fuel support for first responders and vehicles supporting critical infrastructure.

— The New Jersey National Guard’s 21st Civil Support Team has deployed to Brick Township to help local law enforcement enhance their communications system.

— The West Virginia National Guard is rescuing elderly and sick citizens who are without power in remote parts of the state where snow accumulation was more than 18 inches.

— The West Virginia National Guard is delivering critical supplies across 16 counties.

— West Virginia National Guard assessment teams continue to identify and assess high risk structures and augment state active duty health and welfare teams.

— West Virginia National Guard teams conducted roof assessments at ten schools, several private businesses and one senior center.

— Eight West Virginia National Guard helicopters and crews flew various missions
yesterday to include assessments and welfare checks on people in areas unreachable by vehicle due to snowfall.

— The West Virginia National Guard has 12 power teams, eight grader teams, six loader dump teams, four chainsaw teams and three search-and-extraction teams working throughout several counties.

In addition to relief efforts from dozens of non-governmental agencies, charities, and the sheer goodwill of Americans.

Mayor Bloomberg is out to prove that being rich doesn’t make you smart. Let’s see if Mayor B. can ponder the following…

1. If the NYPD are the only people on the streets with guns, then why does the NYPD need guns? Scary thought that ‘why’ part, huh?

2. The courts have ruled that the police are under no obligation to protect us citizens.

3. The reason police carry guns is to protect themselves.

4. Now two questions… When is the last time you heard of a policeman stopping an armed criminal while he’s committing a crime against a citizen? Then, when is the last time you’ve heard of a gun toting citizen stopping an armed criminal while he’s committing a crime?

I am a Guardsman. I was a responder to Katrina. We are a helicopter battalion. We brought no crew-served weapons, i.e. pintle mounted belt-fed automatic weapons. We carried sidearms for about three days but decided they were unnecessary and sent them back home.

I spent twenty eight days in N.O.; at the end of each of those days I got see on our liitle flickering portable television the networks report how I and the other thirteen thousand service members with me weren’t there. I personally assisted in loading out a zodiac boat and insertion rescue team arranged by FEMA for two straight weeks.

I guess I have to admit to a bit of schadenfreude with this bit of misery in Liberal Land. Maybe someone should tell them that all corpses smell the same.
