Video: Geraldo and Eric Bolling yell at each other over Obama’s responsibility for Benghazi

posted at 9:23 pm on November 2, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, I won’t spoil the surprise of whether Geraldo is pro- or anti-O. Actually, the vid’s just candy to lure you into another post about the latest revelation of what State knew about security deteriorating in the city. Remember that meeting in mid-August where the consulate determined that there were Al Qaeda training camps in the city and that it probably couldn’t fend off a “coordinated attack”? Evidently, they decided at the same meeting that security was bad enough that they should consider moving to a different site entirely — specifically, the local CIA annex:

The cable marked “SECRET” also said, of the possibility of moving the consulate operations: “Mission personnel could co-locate to the Annex (CIA outpost) if the security environment degraded suddenly. … (There was agreement) to formal weekly meetings to discuss the security environment. … In the longer term, we believe formal collocation with the (Annex) will greatly improve our security situation.”

The warnings reflected a grave concern among officials on the ground that the Libyan militia charged with protecting the consulate [the 17 February Brigade] had been compromised, perhaps even infiltrated by extremists…

Days after the attack, an intelligence source on the ground in Libya told Fox News: “One thing for sure is that the 17 Brigade was nowhere to be found and the Americans were left on their own in the assault.” On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being very bad, the intelligence source said the consulate security was “A 10 — total security failure. Benghazi was known to be a major area for extremist activities. Militias’ loyalty is easily bought and sold. Deals with militia leaders are worth nothing.”

So the “inside job” theory is coming together. One of the consulate’s Libyan guards — possibly a member of the February 17 Brigade — was seen taking photos of the compound on the morning of the attack, and then the Brigade conveniently failed to ride to the rescue when Ansar al-Sharia attacked that night. Because they worked with the consulate, the Brigade may also have known that the annex was a secret CIA base, which might explain how jihadis managed to pull together a separate attack at that site later in the evening. Now all we need to do is figure out who made the insane decision to trust a local militia with a key security role for a top U.S. diplomat when Al Qaeda had bases of its own in the same city.

Speaking of which, sources who may or may not be associated with the State Department want you to know that this is really kinda sorta the CIA’s fault:

The U.S. effort in Benghazi was at its heart a CIA operation, according to officials briefed on the intelligence. Of the more than 30 American officials evacuated from Benghazi following the deadly assault, only seven worked for the State Department. Nearly all the rest worked for the CIA, under diplomatic cover, which was a principal purpose of the consulate, these officials said…

The CIA’s secret role helps explain why security appeared inadequate at the U.S. diplomatic facility. State Department officials believed that responsibility was set to be shouldered in part by CIA personnel in the city through a series of secret agreements that even some officials in Washington didn’t know about…

In Libya, the relationship between the State Department and CIA was secret and symbiotic: The consulate provided diplomatic cover for the classified CIA operations. The State Department believed it had a formal agreement with the CIA to provide backup security, although a congressional investigator said it now appears the CIA didn’t have the same understanding about its security responsibilities.

In other words, supposedly, the reason State didn’t ramp up security at the consulate despite repeated warnings about terrorist threats was because they thought they already had ramped it up. The security team at the CIA annex was their back-up — except, somehow, either somebody forgot to tell CIA that or CIA was told and then forgot. It’s too depressing to believe that that sort of negligence and miscommunication is going on at the top of the government, especially when it comes to protecting U.S. diplomats in the field, so I’m going to pretend that this is really just a half-assed cover story designed to shield State. In which case, two questions. One: How was the security team at the CIA annex an adequate substitute for stationing more guards — reliable guards — at the consulate itself? The guards on the premises when the attack began were Stevens’s only hope for survival; a team from the annex did in fact leave soon after the attack began to try to rescue him but it was already too late. Security professionals like Eric Nordstrom who were stationed in Libya repeatedly asked for more security notwithstanding the annex’s presence in Benghazi. Obviously a lot of people thought back-up from the CIA team wasn’t enough. The WSJ’s sources seem to want us to think that State couldn’t send more guards or troops to Libya because that would attract attention and maybe blow the CIA’s cover. If so, if the only choice here was between the local CIA being found out and the consulate being left so vulnerable that the ambassador was an easy target for murder, then I’m thinking someone somewhere should have done a much better job of plotting this security arrangement.

Two: What does any of this have to do with the burning question of why troops or gunships weren’t sent in once the attack had begun? Beware of misdirection, says David French:

What is missing from [the CIA timeline released yesterday]? Any details at all about the military or White House’s situational awareness and decision-making. As I detailed on Monday, the White House and Department of Defense no doubt already have a timeline that includes the following information: (a) when the military learned of the attack; (b) the military’s state of situational awareness hour-by-hour; (c) whether it received any requests for help; (d) what assets — if any — were available to render aid in time; (e) what recommendations were made; (f) whether any definitive orders were given; and (g) who gave them.

More than six hours passed between the arrival of the Predator drone overhead and the final, deadly attack on the annex. That is more than enough time to make a decision and bring military assets into the fight. Why were they not deployed? The Daily Beast says that the State Department “never requested military backup,” but that hardly answers the question. That’s typically the responsibility of the ambassador, who was at that very moment cut off, alone, and dying. Interestingly, in that same report the Daily Beast wasn’t able to confirm or deny whether CIA officers made requests for air support.

Yeah, the State/CIA security arrangement at the consulate is interesting but it’s only relevant to what happened before the attack. There’s a separate question of what the White House did, or didn’t do, during the attack to try to save Americans stranded at the annex after they’d been evacuated from the consulate. A Pentagon spokesman said today that rapid-response Marine teams in Sicily “were not in place until after the attacks were over.” But … why not? It was 9/11. Given the Al Qaeda presence and weak central government, there was arguably no place more dangerous for an American diplomat than Libya. According to Fox News, the consulate itself had been tipped hours before the attack that something was coming. How rapid are these rapid reaction teams if that’s not enough warning to get people on the ground during an attack that raged on and off for eight hours?

NRO has taken Kipling’s poem “Mesopotamia” and retitled it:

Benghazi, 2012, by Rudyard Kipling

They shall not return to us, the resolute, the young,
The eager and whole-hearted whom we gave:
But the men who left them thriftily to die in their own dung,
Shall they come with years and honour to the grave?

They shall not return to us; the strong men coldly slain
In sight of help denied from day to day:
But the men who edged their agonies and chid them in their pain,
Are they too strong and wise to put away?

Our dead shall not return to us while Day and Night divide–
Never while the bars of sunset hold.
But the idle-minded overlings who quibbled while they died,
Shall they thrust for high employments as of old?

Shall we only threaten and be angry for an hour:
When the storm is ended shall we find
How softly but how swiftly they have sidled back to power
By the favour and contrivance of their kind?

Even while they soothe us, while they promise large amends,
Even while they make a show of fear,
Do they call upon their debtors, and take counsel with their friends,
To conform and re-establish each career?

Their lives cannot repay us–their death could not undo–
The shame that they have laid upon our race.
But the slothfulness that wasted and the arrogance that slew,
Shall we leave it unabated in its place?

I agree with Geraldo for calling out Bolling on something as flagrant as carrying that narrative of Pres. Obama jetting off to Vegas while Amb. Stevens was choking to death on smoke. It’s not true, and unnecessary.

But it’s unnecessary only because the sheer indomitable weight of legitimate questions about the White House role in the decision-making process before and during the attack renders moot the notion that we (and by we I mean those who want straight answers) should have to stoop to superlatives and exaggeration in order to present our case. And with that in mind, it is the stooping to superlatives that makes it so easy for others to accuse us of “playing politics.” Stick to straightforward, honest, astute questions and leave the sloganeering and bombast to the left.

He is morally bankrupt, bereft of even a modicum of common sense, and his intellect is less than most who ride the short bus. He must have cheated his way through college like the reprobate troglodyte homunculus he has amply proven he is time and time again over the years.

I’ll never understand why FOX keeps his carcass around. He’s a massive embarrassment to the entire country — much less his race.

the simple truths are plain enough. Bengahzi is a hellhole. There was a lack of security in the face of a badly deteriorating environment. The ambassador was there for obscure reasons. There was some intel that the mission would be attacked…but no competent response.

Obama tried to distract by use of a vid…and further inflamed the situation…to obscure his incompetence.

and we lost an ambassador for the first time since 79 in an attack on our mission.

Is O.J. Simpson still moving heaven and earth in his unrelenting pursuit of the real killers of his wife?

Didn’t think so.

Is the Obama Administration ever going to find out which one of the most senior staff at the NSC made the decision to abandon Benghazi to its horrible fate? Is Obama ever going to admit that it was his very own 3 a.m. phone call that he let slide to his voice mail inbox as he packed for another trip to Vegas?

Didn’t think so.

Face it, for most Americans this Benghazi stuff is yesterday’s news…last month’s news, been covered already, if most Americans ever heard of it to begin with.

There are far more important things to do, like making sure Obama sweeps over 300 Electoral votes on Tuesday.

Then, he’ll have more flexibility to deal with the real problems facing America.

Things like focusing like a laser on the people this Administration has abandoned in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

People are starving. Dying. Lots of bodies not yet recovered all along the coast. There goes Obama to Vegas.

It is worse than Katrina. Remember how the Left and the Progs wanted to lynch G.W. Bush because FEMA and the National Guard and everybody else didn’t swoop right in before the Cat-4 winds died down to save New Orleans?

Where’s Obama?

Campaigning.

It is all he knows how to do.

Funny thing…if Obama ordered an immediate air strike from Sigonella…and ordered an armed evacuation of Americans from Benghazi…he’d be home free on Tuesday.

Same if he had stopped campaigning and actually focused on the efforts all along the Atlantic Coast devastated by Sandy…again…he’d be a lock on Tuesday.

But…instead we get more of the same…prevarication, finger pointing, and a demand for a lot more buses to throw people under.

How can any rational person actually consider voting for this putz.

And, Geraldo…we’ll always have Al Capone’s safe…and that broken nose beat down to remember.

Everything else he’s done amounts to zip.

Sorta like Obama.

Fox News has got to find a better token Hispanic.

No, it’s not. Pres. Obama got on a flight to Vegas the following morning EDT, well after the attack concluded.

And either way, as I said before, there are enough legitimate questions about the decisions that were made by the White House and senior DoS officials in the critical hours before, during, and immediately after the attack. There’s no reason to stoop to foolish superlatives about the President jetting off to Vegas while the consulate burned, not when we can demand answers to the decisions soberly, honestly, and astutely. So long as we consider such questions worthy of answering, we ought not to wrap them up in pre-supposing punchlines and bombastic retorts.

As I said before, save such shenanigans for the left.

2 GOP Senators in Graham and Saxby-Chambliss coordinated with the FBI to help them get the Benghazi suspect in Tunisia — so 2 GOP Senators just got done in 2 days what obama couldn’t due in almost 2 months!

Geraldo has to be one of the most arrogant, narcissistic douches in media — and that is saying a lot

A friend of mine was in Iowa during their bad floods in the 90s doing TV work. Geraldo would walk around like a diva and never lift a finger, until the camera came on then he dove into the water and started lifting sandbags with the common folk. As soon as the camera was off, back to preening and flirting with any chicks in earshot.

What a turd. It bothers me that Fox sees fit to keep this washed up hack on air when Judge Napolitano or a dozen other more talented people aren’t.

Kick this irrelevant moron off the air

It’s funny, the liberals accuse Republicans of playing politics with Benghazi. That’s a somewhat effective argument until the families are notified and the services are held. One week tops. After that it MUST become political and we MUST discuss it.

This is what politics is all about, choosing the politicians who will, in this case, do their best to protect our diplomats, deploy our military effectively, and promote a coherent foreign policy. If we can’t discuss the election wrt Benghazi, then elections have no purpose.

I’d like to tell Geraldo there’s another network that carries Obama’s water—MSNBC or even CNN. Maybe he would be happier there.

Timeline:

FOX had this on 10/26:

http://video.foxnews.com/v/1927326779001/benghazis-fatal-timeline-how-4-americans-were-failed/

Yesterday it was challenged by some “Senior U.S. intelligence officials” 11/01:

http://www.breitbart.com/system/wire/DA29V2D82

Notice it took them 5 days! to decide on their story.

Tonight:

http://www.therightscoop.com/fox-news-defends-benghazi-stand-down-report-against-new-cia-timeline-released/

The CIA is refuting a report by Fox News that said the CIA officers at the annex were told to stand down with a new timeline. However Fox News has checked their sources and defends their reporting that the CIA officers were indeed told to stand down. Now the CIA says their base chief was just trying to arrange Libyan assistance.

How do you like that backtrack on their lies?

INC on November 2, 2012 at 10:23 PM

I agree with Geraldo for calling out Bolling on something as flagrant as carrying that narrative of Pres. Obama jetting off to Vegas while Amb. Stevens was choking to death on smoke. It’s not true, and unnecessary.

Sgt Steve on November 2, 2012 at 9:41 PM

I believe you are correct. Obama met with Panetta before he went to bed after concerns had been raised about an imminent attack or after the attack had started. Calls wer made for assistance from Libya. None was given. By the time Obama went to Vegas, he had already made the decision not to act. Stevens was dead. A cover-up was already under way with the initial cover story of a spontaneous protest in response to a youtube video. Accusing Obama of jetting off to Vegas to fundraise while the Stevens was dying is misleading. It was his actions before going to Vegas that happened while Stevens was dying.

Sorry. 10/26-11/01 is 6 days, not 5.

INC on November 2, 2012 at 10:25 PM

This was a real-life “24″ episode.

For whatever reason, they wanted to take out Gaddafi, despite his agreement to give up his WMD. I suspect that they wanted to help the Muslim Brotherhood in its long quest to eliminate Israel.

So they armed them, a la Iran-Contra. But the MB pulled a switch and started supplying the al Qaeda portion of the Syrian rebellion, sort of international Fast & Furious.

Jugears was afraid of being tagged with responsibility so he thought up having someone go over there to “broker” a deal to return the arms instead of sending them to Syria. Chris Stevens volunteered because of his experience in that part of Africa and he thought it was a noble cause.

But there was another plot/scheme underneath.

The MB in Egypt had already demanded the blind sheik be released, something Jugears would do if he had the authority. Unlike 24, he didn’t have the authority so a scheme had to be created to convince the authorities holding the sheik to release him voluntarily.

So they decided to manipulate the warnings they were getting about Benghazi consulate. Since Stevens was already going to Tripoli, the only problem was to get him to Benghazi where security was minimal. So they come up with the cultural center as a cover to “explain” why our ambassador was going to be there. Of course, that means that the terrorists knew it as well.

All that remained was for a credible source to verify to the terrorists that Stevens would be available for them to snatch him and that there would be no security to stop them. Then the prisoner swap could be negotiated and Jugears could use his “successful negotiating skills” to win a second term.

When they stormed the compound, Stevens went into a safe room that the terrorists did not know was there. That’s why they couldn’t find him. So knowing he was in there, they used a seventh century method to get him to come out – fire. The problem is that the smoke overcame him before he could come out.

When they found him, he was alive. Because a dead hostage is no good to them, they rushed him to a hospital. He died anyway, at which point the terrorists abandoned the plot. They would have vanished if it wasn’t for those two patriotic SEALs who thought they were in a real fight rather than a kidnapping with special effects. They couldn’t understand why the military’s rescue reaction system didn’t react. So they went alone, like spec ops are prone to do to save their fellows.

But they always expected reinforcements to show up. They never did.

This explains why they all stood around watching the drone video feed – no one was supposed to fight back and no one was supposed to get hurt. It was all planned out. When it went longer than planned, Jugears got impatient and went to bed secure in the knowledge that he knew what the ending would be.

When he woke up, the SHTF and his election nightmare began. CYA became a matter of first priority and he hasn’t pulled it off yet.

No murder, no sodomized ambassador, no body dragged in the streets. Only problem – annoying parents who want to know why nobody tried to save their kids.

You can accept this line of thinking or not, your choice. But it is the only one that answers the most questions. I was troubled from the beginning about why Stevens didn’t simply retreat to Tripoli. He thought he was being patriotic and besides, the security detachment had already been pulled from Tripoli so he probably thought it wouldn’t matter.

Jugears has committed treason. Whether he retires to luxury or gets prosecuted remains an open question.

Why does Foxnews have this American military hating Left wing anti American even on their shows. He tried to do what he could to give away military info to the enemy when we went into Iraq. He hates our American constitution and thinks it should be done away with. And then tried to spin the fact that Obama and his administration were willing to let Americans die to avoid having to make a decision about sending the military in. He tried to say that was some how anti military when every one of common sense knows that the military could not act until told to. What a creep Geraldo is.

Geraldo has been consistently lying about this matter. Even the gentle Kirsten Powers has called him out. For example, Geraldo maintained AFTER Charlene Lamb testified that there was no real time intelligence as to the attack. Well she testified there was. A lot. But she forgot to mention the emails, drones and cell phone conversations with CIA and navy personnel. Nor what the 26 survivors have said. Remember them? The 26 survivors we have not heard from after 2 and a half months!

It seems that the CIA response was to send Dougherty and Woods from the annex to the compound…

Didn’t they disobey orders not to go to the compound?

Weren’t they asking for help for themselves?

I’m confused.

Akzed on November 2, 2012 at 10:39 PM

No, it’s not. Pres. Obama got on a flight to Vegas the following morning EDT, well after the attack concluded.

So because he went partying AFTER 4 Americans died a brutal death and not DURING the tragedy, it should make us feel better ?

And either way, as I said before, there are enough legitimate questions about the decisions that were made by the White House and senior DoS officials in the critical hours before, during, and immediately after the attack.

Here is a legitimate question :
Mr President, who told you to go partying in Vegas after you saw the death and mayhem @ Benghazi unfold before your eyes ?

There’s no reason to stoop to foolish superlatives about the President jetting off to Vegas while the consulate burned,

IIRC, the counsulate was still burning in some parts , hours after the final attack .

not when we can demand answers to the decisions soberly, honestly, and astutely. So long as we consider such questions worthy of answering, we ought not to wrap them up in pre-supposing punchlines and bombastic retorts.

As I said before, save such shenanigans for the left.
