Thread winner, in the category of black humor during a disaster.

I recall, probably imperfectly, a story from many months ago about charities that were not allowed to serve donated fried food because it had been cooked in Crisco or something. Couldn’t feed the hungry something for a meal that might hurt them years later — though that would possibly be true if they kept eating it for years instead of on a one-off or short-term basis.

What an attitude — better to be hungry [or starving] now than eating something that may cause a health problem years down the road.

I guess I just spent too much time in the Army, but it seems completely unnatural to me that people would go without being armed, and having basic survival gear that they can carry with them.

It’s a lot harder for us civvies to just carry that stuff anywhere we go. If absolutely nothing else, because people with backpacks who aren’t obviously students get The Eye from security after 9/11. Not to mention that you can hardly throw a rock without hitting a business where there’s one of those [CENSORED] “no firearms except for cops” signs…

Also, our gear isn’t government-sponsored, and a decent firearm and ammunition costs a !@$^ing fortune. So it’s “buy, beg, borrow, or salvage” for literally everything in our survival kits.

Keeping arms and survival gear at your residence, now that’s a whole different ballgame.

The Shabaab al-Mujahideen Movement remarked that Hurricane Sandy, which devastated many areas in the Caribbean and East Coast and mid-Atlantic of the United States, was a disaster imposed by God for rejecting Islam. In a series of eleven postings on its English Twitter account on October 31, 2012, the Shabaab’s Press Office urged non-Muslims in the US to “reject their falsehood” and embrace Islam in order to find safety. It wrote, for example: “The path of destruction carved by hurricane Sandy in the US is just a tiny fragment of the punishment warranted by their heinous atrocities… Destroying everything by the command of Allah, these punishing winds serve as a just recompense for their disbelief and crimes against Islam… It is the answer to the prayers of the oppressed Muslims accross the globe and a response to the silent whispers of the Muslim prisoners…”
The postings by the Shabaab’s Press Office about the hurricane and its impact comes amidst jihadists celebrating the destruction to the US and New York City in particular, and finding it to be God’s punishment for what they perceive as a war on Islam.

Utilities from all over the country are sending people,gear and equipment.

Lowes and Home Depot are sending inventory from all over the country.

What happens to these supplies if the divers are non-union?

A dozen cans of tuna, two big jars of peanut butter, and two big boxes of saltines don’t take much space. All of it can fit in a rolly-shopper-cart in one trip to the store.

When the abode is gone, what do you do, genius? When people live paycheck to paycheck normally, and millions do, what do they buy these meager supplies with? There are many people in desperate situations and do desperate things jut to get by one more day.

Utilities from all over the country are sending people,gear and equipment.

I just heard on the radio that utility repairmen from some southern state were told to get out of NJ because they weren’t union. They are leaving NJ and going to NYC. I wonder what will happen there.

I have sympathy for the poor children of these imbeciles.

It’s beginning to look like good old fashion Boy Scout conservative planning is better for survival than liberal live for today-isms, and big government hand outs pan handling. Can’t wait to see how Obamacare works out!

The moral of the story is to plan for the worst and to take all threats seriously … Iran anyone?

When the Hurricane Seasons started hitting NC again around the time of H. Floyd, Tarheels started wising up. Most folks I know do just like you say at the outside hint of a storm hitting the South Eastern Coast. Most of the people I know have an emergency generator of some type and quite a few have automatic panels that kick on permanent generators that run full zones or the entire house. I just delivered on to our build site that’ll run the entire hawkdriver farm.

I have only ever been in one situation where I felt helpless and it really was an eye opener about how vulnerable you become. When the Tornados hit Huntsville, AL I was staying in a corporate apartment my firm arranged for us. When the electricity went out, it was all so sudden I didn’t have the time or storage resources for anything. My truck didn’t have enough gas and there was none to be had. After two days of being without power, the apartment got a van sized generator to run the apartments, but there were people going without food and the sirens going up and down University Blvd constantly gave it quite the surreal feeling. My wife had already been scheduled to fly in to help me move back to NC so we just got lucky that I had to pick her up at the airport. I had enough gas to pick her up and get back to the apartments. We didn’t have a plan after that. But a State Police Trooper at the airport told us he expected Decatur to get electricity that morning. I went straight to there from the airport and he was right. But cars and trucks were already lining up to every gas station. We got in an early line, topped off and by the time we were pulling out and heading back to the apartments to pack up and leave, the scene was getting unruly at most of those stations. They had police at every one directing traffic and keeping the peace. Driving out of town and AL, the region was like a war zone until we got past the Guntersville Lake area.

It is awful feeling like you’re not in control of your situation.
