The obligatory “Drudge teasing political sex scandal story” post

posted at 10:00 pm on October 31, 2012 by Allahpundit

People have been e-mailing for the past hour wondering if it’s The One. C’mon — President Spock, caught in a sex scandal? He’s years away from his next pon farr.

It’s not him:

SEX SCANDAL TO HIT CAMPAIGN…

STORY SAID TO INVOLVE POWERFUL SENATOR, SOURCES TELL DRUDGE. DAILY CALLER PLANS LATE NIGHT RELEASE…

That second line appeared on Drudge’s site only within the past half hour or so. Before it did, Ace posted that he’d also heard tonight about a sex scandal involving a senator — a Democratic senator — that was set to pop soon. Follow the link for details. Spitzer’s meltdown would be hard to top, but if the allegations are true, this would do it. No word on whether it’s someone who’s up for reelection but it’s hard to resist jumping to that conclusion given the timing.

That’s all there is right now. While we wait, via Breitbart, here’s a visit from the Ghost of Sex Scandals Past. Evidently the GOP wants people to know that rape and incest “are not problems” anymore. Thank goodness he informed me of this before election day.

If Christie actually engineered this photo-op knowing the poop (remember, he was a prosecutor), it would go down in election-history annals. It might even make up for suffering the ire of NJ residents.

If that’s all they have it seems a little weak. Unidentified prostitutes being shown a picture of the guy? He is probably guilty but it’s going to be fairly easy to demolish if that’s it.

sharrukin on November 1, 2012 at 1:54 AM

The other woman recounted, with apparent bitterness, receiving from an intermediary only $100 of the $500 she had been promised.

“He lies,” she said of Menendez. “He says one thing and does another.”

Sounds very much like a Democrat. So…where’s Bill Clinton in all this?

trapeze on November 1, 2012 at 1:56 AM

Total non-story.

Single Senator engages hookers in a place where hookers are perfectly legal. Only scandal is that he apparently shorted them on their fee.

Dud.

Yeah, good job by DC getting this together, but unless there is more I’m guessing Menendez digs in and hangs on rather than being forced to resign… Media will gladly ignore this for him unless they have a more tangible smoking gun.

Gingotts on November 1, 2012 at 1:58 AM

It is known that Sen. Menendez has been a regular visitor to the Dominican Republic. On at least one occasion, according to a news account, Menendez has been a guest at the Casa de Campo home of a friend and campaign donor named Salomon Melgen, an ophthalmologist and owner of an eye clinic in Florida.

Melgen has donated $14,700 to Menendez’s campaigns since 1993, with the bulk of it coming since he became a U.S. Senator, according to Federal Election Commission data collected by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Melgen also appears to have lent Menendez the use of his plane on several occasions.

I guess. The feminists will provide cover for the Democrats even so. They always do. No electric prods or pictures of the good Senator wearing a Little Bo Peep outfit…not much of a story.

Unless they are holding something back.

sharrukin on November 1, 2012 at 2:10 AM

Heh, I think you guys are under-estimating this one.

First, yes it may be legal there, but it isn’t here and Americans generally don’t forgive acts they don’t approve of just because they’re legal in certain areas.

Second, two women adds a certain degree of legitimacy, its one thing to say one woman is lying, is another thing to say two women are lying. For that matter, what why would they lie? If this didn’t happen then they wouldn’t have a grudge. The only reason to lie would be if they were paid to, and I’m sure some people will lob about that sort of allegation, but you cannot really accuse the Daily Caller of paying people to lie without opening up a whole other can of worms.

Third, no this may not take Menendez down, its late, its New Jersey, and some votes will already have been cast. Still, if it has the slightest bit of traction it could. More importantly, it both derails the War Against Women meme during the last few days, and may push independents a bit further towards Republican candidates in general.

Finally, it probably will get at least a days worth of coverage, possibly two. This eats into the miniscule time Obama has left to turn around his campaign, and also serves to push aside any lingering feel good stories about Obama and the hurricane. Not that those really had any effect, but its nice to derail loose threads like that.

WolvenOne on November 1, 2012 at 2:11 AM

Considering most of his constituents are without power, and so many have lost their homes, etc., I seriously doubt anyone could give a rats behind about what this guy does during his time off from Congress.

Exactly. He’s only been in the Senate since 2006 and has no important leadership roles. “Boss of the Hudson County machine” doesn’t strike me as very powerful as far as senators go.

Menendez is just your typical sleazy, corrupt New Jersey pol. The “controversies” section on his wiki is worth a read though.

A poll released by CBS and the New York Times in 2006 asked participants to name the first thing that came to their minds when hearing Menendez’s name: the top answer given was “corruption” or “crooked”

He travels to the DR “frequently” so I’m guessing he has a binder just chock full of DR hookers.

trapeze on November 1, 2012 at 2:41 AM

This weak story alleging, without proof, a divorced man bought sex from prostitutes in a country where such activities are not illegal, will not gain any currency or circulation and will not help a GOP candidate behind in the race by double digit margin, in a state like NJ. There is no mention that the women were underage, and even if they were, you have to prove that Menendez knew and specifically sought them out because of his perversion.

I am just glad that the “scandal” did not involve Team Romney. And I am sure Team Romney will stay as far away from the story as possible.

bayview on November 1, 2012 at 2:45 AM

@bayview….Wrong and some people on our side suck at this game..smh

He’s on tape this year saying the Secret Service people should be fired for this exact thing…No way around that. He’s using a donor’s plane for this…does the donor know? If so he’s susceptible to blackmail…Why is he outsourcing jobs overseas? Why does have a war against women and cheating them out of money?

There are a lot of hooks (no pun) to this story…

If you say this is no big deal…why was Anthony Weiner a big deal…?

jaygatz33 on November 1, 2012 at 2:51 AM

This is kinda funny. Menendez has a campaign commercial entitled “Family.”

The transcript:

To me it’s all about family: my parents, who worked so hard, or my two children, who have enormous opportunity because of this great country. And, as senator, I fight back for your family. So I work to make college more affordable, make sure women’s health care is secure, help jump-start new solar energy and biotech jobs. Fighting back for families. That’s how you rebuild the middle class.

I’m Sen. Bob Menendez and I approve this message.

Apparently you can also rebuild the middle class by stiffing Dominican wh*res, whose “women’s health care” is probably not very “secure.” You wonder how his parents, “who worked so hard,” would feel about their son shortchanging a couple of working girls (probably around the same age as his own college-educated daughter). I’m sure they could have used that extra $400–but for life’s necessities, since they probably don’t have college funds.

steebo77 on November 1, 2012 at 2:52 AM

And I am sure Team Romney will stay as far away from the story as possible.

bayview on November 1, 2012 at 2:45 AM

I would expect nothing else. That’s what surrogates are for…in this case the new media, especially social media.

It doesn’t have to be a “strong” story to have an impact in the election. Even a small impact is capable of moving a race. Will it affect the NJ senate race? It would be great if it did but it probably won’t. But it could bump another race. We may never know. Doesn’t matter. I, for one, will take it.

Harbingeing on November 1, 2012 at 3:09 AM

Salomon Melgen, the donor involved in this story gave, among other contributions to Democrats, $30,400 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in 2010. I wonder what other politicians have been flown down for Dominican excursions.

steebo77 on November 1, 2012 at 3:10 AM

This weak story alleging, without proof…

It’s not that weak a story. The hookers identified Menendez, identified specific dates when he traveled to the Dominican Republic, identified where and with whom he stayed and how he traveled there. To impeach their testimony, you have to construct some scenario in which two Dominican hookers know the private-jet travel arrangements of a US Senator. People have gone to prison on less evidence than that.

And speaking of prison…

…even if [the hookers] were [underage], you have to prove that Menendez knew and specifically sought them out because of his perversion.

Not true, actually. Now, I haven’t seen any credible allegation that one or more of the orgy participants was underage, so this is just a hypothetical. However, the mere act of traveling via commercial transport to a foreign country and then paying a person under 18 in that country for sex is its own special felony under the law, carrying a 30-year prison term. No intent is required. And while “she looked 18!” is a defense, the burden of proof is on the defendant to show that he reasonably believed that to be the case. See 18 USC § 2423 (c) and (g).

So no, if one or more of the hookers was underage, this automatically goes from being a tawdry sex scandal to being a major sex felony. But again, that’s not in the Daily Caller piece, so I’m not sure where the underage part of the allegation is coming from other than wishful blogger thinking.

Fabozz on November 1, 2012 at 3:11 AM

bluegill on November 1, 2012 at 3:30 AM

Fabozz on November 1, 2012 at 3:11 AM

Those women still have to prove that they were actually in that resort rather than saying they were there. I am not doubting that Menendez was not cliente número 9, but unless there are record like the guest log at the gate, etc, a good defense lawyer can shoot enough holes to counter the allegation.

Leaving aside the felonious aspect of age of the accusers, which unlike the rumors, was not alleged in the actual DC article, the likelihood that this will be a non story is we still have Senator Vitter. This story also will not compensate for a 19 points margin in the NJ senate race.

Yeah, but IIRC none of the photos showed his face. He could’ve denied it and said they were just pics…Bob is a 58 year old sleazeball using donor planes to go to foreign countries to rip off prostitutes who are likely quite wrong and could be being trafficked in the sex trade for all we know…Two girls are on tape describing their allegations.

My point was, without Breitbart and others pushing the story it would’ve been ignored by the media. Hell these cretins tried to suppress the Dem President having an affair with a young intern…if you’re waiting around waiting for a story “big enough” for the media to objectively cover that benefits our side…you’ll be waiting forever.

There is no objective media in the USA.

What a huge nothingburger. Menendez is single. Who cares if he hired a hooker or two?

AngusMc on November 1, 2012 at 6:35 AM

If it’s a Democrat, it isn’t really going to matter.

DEMOCRAT Culture of Corruption!!!!!

PappyD61 on November 1, 2012 at 7:14 AM

These PROBABLY are not the only “ladies” that he has frequented.

And what about this WAR ON WOMEN???

No wonder Democrats support free contraception and abortion……to hide their misdeeds.

And so much for “redistribution” of wealth. Typical Lib.

Biden giving it the “whole load” approves of Banger Bob!

Everyone pays for sex one way or the other anyway – so where’s the big deal? Our stupid little laws against it are ridiculous.

HondaV65 on November 1, 2012 at 4:52 AM

You keep proving yourself the puke. Congrats.

CW on November 1, 2012 at 7:25 AM

According to the translator’s summary, Menendez “was nice at first, but then later he did not seem to care about her.”

Hmmm just like HondaV’s women.

Weird.

CW on November 1, 2012 at 7:27 AM

Unless these prostitutes are under age and they have pictures of Menendez with a farm animal, the MSM will ignore this.
Fizzle.

Mr. Arrogant on November 1, 2012 at 7:39 AM

Menendez is a Democrat in NJ who is 20 points up in his campaign. This does not matter.

Happy Nomad on November 1, 2012 at 7:41 AM

It’s about Reid going to S&M clubs with Lisa Murkowski.

CorporatePiggy on November 1, 2012 at 7:50 AM

Another Democrat that can’t keep his pants zipped . . . what’s new? That dark blue State accepts this as normal behavior.

rplat on November 1, 2012 at 8:01 AM

Drudge and DC team up again…for another dud.

verbaluce on November 1, 2012 at 8:03 AM

Is it true that Menendez was actually auditioning for a spot on Jersey Shore?

BuckeyeSam on November 1, 2012 at 8:05 AM

New Jersey will still elect him. He could have murdered a prostitute and he would still get elected. The fact that 3/4 of New Jersians are without power and affected by the storm.. this is a huge dud. I just want the ability to vote against Obama on Tuesday and it’s not looking good.

lostinjrz on November 1, 2012 at 8:07 AM

This will only help Menendez – I mean, who would have thought that he was interested in women, or that he was capable of performing sex acts? Not that anyone really wanted to think about it.
