Video: If watching grandma drop the F-bomb won’t get you to vote for Obama, nothing will

posted at 6:59 pm on October 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

Of the many celebrity campaign excrescences lately, this is the best example of something designed more to promote the people involved than their chosen candidate. Ostensibly it’s an ad to elect Obama but in reality it’s a reminder from Michael Moore and MoveOn that they’re still out there, doin’ their thing, even though both are now seven or eight years removed from peak relevance. Ace is probably right that the inspiration was Betty White (who, incidentally, is an Obama supporter, and who could have singlehandedly made this clip mega-viral by appearing in it), but the “cursing granny” shock gag is ageless. My first encounter with it was the cheesy yet underrated “Moving Violations,” which starred Bill Murray’s brother doing his best Bill Murray impression presumably because the producers couldn’t actually get Bill Murray. Same here with the fake Bettys, I assume. But that’s okay: Whether it’s Betty herself or a more generic elderly actress uttering the word “cockpunch,” the case for voting for Barack Obama is just as compelling.

I think it’s too late in the game for any ad to move the needle much, but I’d be curious to see the reaction of centrists in the 55+ crowd to this one.

Republicans steal elections?

Ohio is reporting 250,000 fewer requests for absentee ballots from Democrats in 2012 compared to 2008. So, where did those people go? Did Cleveland empty out completely? I don’t think so. I think that these people didn’t actually exist in 2008. My theory is that the ballots did exist, but ACORN voted with them.

Democrats steal elections. See Washington state (Governor Christine Gregoire) and Minnesota (Senator Al Franken).

Emperor Norton on October 30, 2012 at 7:17 PM

So when the old folks home burns down, killing all those libtards, will Michael Moore be arrested for inciting arson? What about inciting violence against President Romney?

Michael Moore just might be able to lose some weight in a federal prison next year.

Robert Jensen on October 30, 2012 at 7:18 PM

The actors here seem to be stumbling over their lines and are having trouble reading the cue cards in front of them. Not only is this a disgusting ad content wise, but it’s also pretty poorly done.

bluegill on October 30, 2012 at 7:18 PM

The senile vote. Another sure winner for Obama!

Look what Obama uses: little kids singing his praises who are guided by partisan adults (like that ‘teacher’ who told a kid he can be arrested for talking against Obama), and older folk who need assisted care who likely are slipping in reasoning and cognizance.

Where are we regular folk included in Obama’s efforts? He abandoned the white middle class last year, rejecting us out of hand.

Add in that Moore used these old folk to threaten riots if We the People vote out Obama, as is our right to do so as a free people.

This is just plain low.

It’s the contrast with the sweet little old lady persona she spent years perfecting on Golden Girls that makes the “cursing granny” shock gag work so well for Betty White. These senior citizens just come across as bitter and angry and that’s not funny.

Liam on October 30, 2012 at 7:26 PM

What’s the message here? Would this woman go out into public and really try to use this argument??? I doubt it. It’s more of the same desperation crap from the Democrats—exploitation and fear mongering. Kids don’t know any better and these elderly folks probably should but the elderly can certainly be manipulated very easily. There are laws against doing that–I mean, how many scams do you hear about that target the elderly when they get suckered for all the $$ they’ve got? It’s pretty frequent.

Cody1991 on October 30, 2012 at 7:31 PM

To say I’m embarrassed by this commercial and by these seniors would be an understatement. I’m saddened that the political discourse in this country has fallen to such a level as to think our political parties believe that by dishonoring the greatest generation in this way that they’ll maintain their power and position. Perhaps the “greatest” generation wasn’t as great as we thought they were.

I disagree Allah. I don’t think it was underrated. I think it stunk on ice. If I want a Murry brother I’ll take the Bryan-Doyle variety. Fred Willard did all he could with his part and I could have sworn Wendy Joe Sperber was in that movie involving a doctors office/car repair gag but I could be wrong. Throw in a half-hearted ‘not a rocket scientist/actually I am’ joke as a space filler and you have a “ok, whatever” ’80s movie.
