Obama to tour New Jersey hurricane damage — with Chris Christie

posted at 9:27 pm on October 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

Pains me to say it but this is awfully smart retail politics by The One. He got an unexpected political opportunity (and challenge) from the storm to show leadership and compassion in the aftermath. What better way to do both than by coopting one of Romney’s most visible surrogates, the keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention, into a “message: I care” photo op in New Jersey? It’s a way to show centrists that he’s bipartisan when he needs to be. The alpha-male optics of having Christie forced to stand behind him while he’s at the podium would alone be worth it.

President Obama will join Chris Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey, in viewing damage from the storm on Wednesday, the White House announced on Tuesday as Mr. Obama praised relief efforts at a Red Cross headquarters in Washington…

Mr. Christie had been one of the president’s most ardent critics until the storm’s arrival. In the last 24 hours, he has praised Mr. Obama’s leadership and the administration’s actions to speed relief resources to New Jersey.

At the Red Cross, Mr. Obama said his message to officials in the federal government was “no bureaucracy, no red tape.” And he said federal officials were “going to continue to push as hard as we can” to provide resources to places like Newark, where there were major losses of electricity.

I wonder who gets more out of this deal — Obama for the reasons stated above (plus a contact high from appearing with a guy who’s earning praise for his storm performance) or Christie for getting to share the spotlight with a Democrat who’s going to win his very blue state easily next week? Whether you think Christie’s working a political angle here depends, I guess, on how much you like him personally: In fairness, it’d look petty if he denied The One a visit at a moment when he’s on official business, although there are ways to do it that can be framed as apolitical. The Christie-skeptic theory would be that (a) at a minimum, he’s prioritizing his own reelection bid as governor over Romney’s campaign and (b) that just maybe he secretly hopes Romney loses because it’d clear the way for his own 2016 candidacy. (Remember that Christie’s convention speech was lighter than expected for the nominee.) The Christie-phile theory is that he really truly doesn’t give a damn about presidential politics right now. He’s not a robot; he spent the last day being briefed on massive destruction in his state and spent the days before that bracing for landfall from the storm of the century. He’s probably too busy thinking about Atlantic City being underwater to care much about the election. And if you asked Romney whether his reaction is inappropriate, no doubt he’d say that it is. Exit question: Which theory is correct?

Christie wants the nomination in 2016 and this is his path to achieving that goal. The guy is about self-promotion, first and foremost. Praising Obama is the best way to get fawning press.

“Really? So the 23 million people, who are unemployed and underemployed, and the 47 million Americans on food stamps will no longer care about the economy, but will vote for Obama because of how he handled a storm (and, he and FEMA didn’t exactly start off very well by providing only websites for people to contact. How do people go to websites when they don’t have electricity? D’oh!)”

How much coverage did the website thing get? Not much.

It’s amazing how the hurricane is being used against Romney by the media to try and rescue Preezy AteDog. It makes you wonder if there are enough stupid people out there for it to work on.

I have never gotten the feeling that Christie was 100% behind Romney. First his weak-assed speech and now this makes me wonder if he hasn’t already convinced himself he is the man for 2016. I will take him at his earlier words when he said he doesn’t give a damn about who wins the election now.

Why not invite Romney to join them?

Did we have any idea in 2008 what obysmal would do when he’d be in office ??

Actually yes. Other than campaign finance pledges and comprehensive immigration reform what issue in the Demoratic primary did Obama walk back from the 2008 Dem primary and the general election campaign. He passed lily ledbetter, he got rid of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, he went after Bin Laden, he pushed for National healthcare, he advocated for a surge in afghanistan, he’s been a champion on gay rights issues. The only walk back he’s done is in terms of the left, he’s heightened deportations and DEA raids on marijuana distributors. And other things congressional gridlock has blocked, but hey that’s democracy. We actually knew what Obama was, he told us…a lot.

What you want is people to think they cannot get by without such federal agencies when you and I both KNOW we can……

So you’re arguing that there’s no need for FEMA during an emergency? Again, the word “emergency” is in FEMA’s title. You are the one being dishonest, what you want is for people to not remember that there are some things that spit and individual effort can not do. One of them is nationally coordinated disaster relief. Imagine, for example, if NYC and NJ were having to rely on state budgets alone to pay for this event.

In the midst of such a tragedy is not the time to have this discussion and you know it.

How utterly asinine. At the very moment the federal government is responding to the dire needs of its citizens its somehow inappropriate to point out the fact that only the federal government could coordinate the resources and manpower to respond to a disaster of this scale? Explain it to me. How does pointing that out, and then asking a candidate who said the federal government should not be in charge of disaster relief hurt any of the people effected by the storm?

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Stop your stupid propaganda right there. Every single government in this world, whether the govt of a third country, a banana republic or a developed country has the obligation to provide relief in cases of natural disasters and they all do. To act as if this Sandy relief response is some big deal is idiotic to say the least . What, are you trying to say that countries with ring wing governments and with more market-inclined political parties in power wouldn’t coordinate a relief effort as well as bloody socialist goverments or what the heck is your point exactly.

So you’re argument isn’t that there should be less federal revenue spent, but only in terms of who administers that money? Is your claim that the states should be able to request as much from the federal government in a disaster situation with no accountability to the feds? Or are you saying that states should have to raise their own funds for disaster relief? Please explain how this works in a way that actually makes more sense than FEMA. 50 state disaster relief agencies all requesting funds from the federal relief budget = better than one federal emergency agency?

How are you socially conservative? No man of God would do what you’re doing.

Secretary Clinton will have to explain why the State Department did not heed requests for greater security, both before and during the attack. And she is beginning to grasp — and so especially is her husband — that the administration is hanging the disaster around her neck

Congressional republicans are implicated on this question Schadenfreude. If you’re being intellectually honest you’ll identify this as a wash in terms of blame.

As for the violence itself. It is inevitable when you do imperialism. That’s honestly how I feel. You do imperialism and people resist. You want people to not violently attack your symbol of imperialism, then don’t do imperialism in other people’s countries. Like I said, it is political but not for the reasons you think.

If you were to learn that Obama denied help to those on the ground in Benghazi, would that change your view of Obama?

He said today that “we don’t leave people behind.” He did in Benghazi.

When he called on the Navy Seals to kill Osama bin Laden, they answered his call. When Navy Seals, albeit retired but still in service to their country, called on Obama, he didn’t answer their call.

Will you shut up already. the state dept sat with their azzes on a pile of money, if they had friggin money to buy Chevy Volts for the US Embassy in Viena, am sure there were money for security in Benghazi. Bottom line the bloody idiot who is in the WH refused to enhance security there coz he wanted a light military footprint in the country that would fit within his idiotic FP doctrine in the ME and obviously now North Africa. he idn’t want to upset the oh, so fragile political balance in the country that he ‘liberated’ and he didn’t want a stronger military presence there, so he sacrificed 4 lives for his imbecilic Foreign policy that’s the worse this country has seen since inception.

You must read up on this. The cuts did not affect Benghazi. It’s been part of the hearings. Has nothing to do with Congress. The fault is with Obama. He wanted the “terrorists to be on the run” and it went awry. We only know 30%, I assure you. Obama is in big trouble, so is Hillary, Petraeus and all the others in the article, for starters.

O’bamna can only do this once, and he’s doing in in a state that he’s already won. None of the other states got hit as hard by Sandy as NJ did. Before the storm, RCP had NJ as O + 30 or something.

None of the other states got as bad a hit; even O’bamna Ally MA Governor Deval Patrick said they made it thru just fine without any help.

Why is he going to campaign in New Jersey?

For me, this is the crux of the issue. The particularities of how Obama Administration dealt with their imperial gambit is sort of irrelevant to me because I knew from the start something like this would happen. There is no administration of imperialism that doesn’t produce blowback. Period. If Romney had been in office, no doubt something similar would be happening assuming he authorized force. Though I will say, who knows if he would have, maybe he’s a traditional Republican on those issues. But if he’s a Bush-ian, then I have no way of distinguishing what Obama’s doing in Libya to what Romney’s doing.

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 10:25 PM

How so? Because of the budget that was never passed? That’s right. Those cuts were never made.

1. Ryan’s budget proposal did not cut $300 million from embassy security. It called for a 19% overall decrease in non-defense discretionary spending, but does not even mention embassy security. The cut does not have to affect every programme equally. For example, in 2012, we gave a grant of $444.1 million to Big Big & Co, who have said that they do not need subsidies. That money could have been used to increase embassy security.

2. The Ryan budget was never passed. None of the cuts were ever made. In fact, it has been 1,300 days since the Senate has passed a budget.

3. Also, 4 days after the administration denied additional security to Libya, including the request of continued usage of a DC-3, it authorised a new electric charging station and Chevy Volts the American Embassy in Vienna, which is located in the country where Obama claims they speak “Austrian.”

4. State is sitting on $2.2 billion.

5. On 14 September 2012, President Obama released the long-awaited “sequestration report,” detailing the cuts the White House would make to the budget under last year’s Budget Control Act if no deal is reached in Congress.

And there, buried on page 136, is the White House’s proposed cuts to “Embassy Security, Construction, and Maintenance.” $129 million. That’s a full 8.2 percent of the possible sequestrable amount. It’s a massive slash of the budget for our embassies, consulates, and security abroad.

6. The State Department confirmed that a Marine detachment was on duty protecting the US Embassy in the “high-risk” country known as Barbados on 09.11.12./

This is an Obama Administration FAIL. Do not attempt to pass it off on anyone else.
