Obama to tour New Jersey hurricane damage — with Chris Christie

posted at 9:27 pm on October 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

Pains me to say it but this is awfully smart retail politics by The One. He got an unexpected political opportunity (and challenge) from the storm to show leadership and compassion in the aftermath. What better way to do both than by coopting one of Romney’s most visible surrogates, the keynote speaker at the Republican National Convention, into a “message: I care” photo op in New Jersey? It’s a way to show centrists that he’s bipartisan when he needs to be. The alpha-male optics of having Christie forced to stand behind him while he’s at the podium would alone be worth it.

President Obama will join Chris Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey, in viewing damage from the storm on Wednesday, the White House announced on Tuesday as Mr. Obama praised relief efforts at a Red Cross headquarters in Washington…

Mr. Christie had been one of the president’s most ardent critics until the storm’s arrival. In the last 24 hours, he has praised Mr. Obama’s leadership and the administration’s actions to speed relief resources to New Jersey.

At the Red Cross, Mr. Obama said his message to officials in the federal government was “no bureaucracy, no red tape.” And he said federal officials were “going to continue to push as hard as we can” to provide resources to places like Newark, where there were major losses of electricity.

I wonder who gets more out of this deal — Obama for the reasons stated above (plus a contact high from appearing with a guy who’s earning praise for his storm performance) or Christie for getting to share the spotlight with a Democrat who’s going to win his very blue state easily next week? Whether you think Christie’s working a political angle here depends, I guess, on how much you like him personally: In fairness, it’d look petty if he denied The One a visit at a moment when he’s on official business, although there are ways to do it that can be framed as apolitical. The Christie-skeptic theory would be that (a) at a minimum, he’s prioritizing his own reelection bid as governor over Romney’s campaign and (b) that just maybe he secretly hopes Romney loses because it’d clear the way for his own 2016 candidacy. (Remember that Christie’s convention speech was lighter than expected for the nominee.) The Christie-phile theory is that he really truly doesn’t give a damn about presidential politics right now. He’s not a robot; he spent the last day being briefed on massive destruction in his state and spent the days before that bracing for landfall from the storm of the century. He’s probably too busy thinking about Atlantic City being underwater to care much about the election. And if you asked Romney whether his reaction is inappropriate, no doubt he’d say that it is. Exit question: Which theory is correct?

I don’t blame Christie for this at all. First, you are not human if you’re a governor in this kind of mess and knowing that you’re going to need help and big money quick to help your people, and if the cost is having to deal with Obama coming into your state in chaos, and thus adding even more chaos that a presidential visit entails, it is what it is.

Second, Obama’s going to win your state anyway, so WTF? Plus, Obama coming into a state that he owns anyway, isn’t going to shift needles that much anywhere else, the voters knowing that if this crisis had occurred in, say, a red state or two, Obama would be on the golf course.

As to a 2016 presidential-run calculus for Christie, I don’t think that’s a part of it all in this instance, the guy is pretty real.

Christie’s looking out for Chris Christie, as well as New Jersey, but honestly I don’t think it’ll make a difference either way. Nobody already inclined to vote for Romney is going to change their mind based on hurricane response, and fence sitters aren’t likely to forget about four years of disappointment and frustration just because Obama took some calls and looked “concerned”, um, doing his job. The reason they’re fence-sitters in the first place is because, four years in, they don’t believe he HAS done his job. That doesn’t change with a photo op.

You have to be able to feel empathy, other than yourself, to exude any. You are either a parody or an incredible fool/Liar.

You and Obama think that all the American people are as idiotic as Julia. Dream on. One week from today!!!

Obama could not have asked for a better turn of events.

Right – it saved us from bombing Benghazi neighborhoods/children or a couple of ships in the Hormuz.

The storm is the only thing that will matter for the last week of the campaign.

Then you are an incredible fool, again. In politics an hour can be a lifetime…see Benghazi.

And he’s helped by Romney being so unsure of how to react and proceed.

Why are you trying to politicize this storm, when the bodies haven’t even been rounded up yet?

faraway on October 30, 2012 at 9:52 PM

Politicize the storm? Its a policy question that Romney spoke about willingly when there wasn’t a disastrous storm. Refusing to answer the question because:
1. You don’t want to stand by your beliefs
2. Your beliefs look abhorrent when translated from the hypothetical of the debate to the real world.

Is not politicizing the storm. Its holding Mitt Romney accountable for the crazy things he said to fool Republican voters into thinking he was a conservative. Admit it, you have absolutely no idea what this man will actually do when he’s in office.

GUMBY–

The hurricane was a Godsend for Obama and I’m glad Allah has a realistic appraisal of the situation.

gumbyandpokey on October 30, 2012 at 9:34 PM

You’re disgusting. You puke.

Keep wiggling but we just though you were stupid before but now we know you are ugly.

CW on October 30, 2012 at 10:06 PM

There will be no more questions about the economy. Everything is how Obama handled the Frankenstorm and if Romney wants to cut FEMA.

gumbyandpokey on October 30, 2012 at 9:49 PM

Really? So the 23 million people, who are unemployed and underemployed, and the 47 million Americans on food stamps will no longer care about the economy, but will vote for Obama because of how he handled a storm (and, he and FEMA didn’t exactly start off very well by providing only websites for people to contact. How do people go to websites when they don’t have electricity? D’oh!)

You only wish that voters would forget about the economy.

If people were going to vote against Obama because of the economy, they aren’t going to change their minds because of how he handled Sandy. They know that Sandy will pass. They’ll be stuck with Obama and his disastrous policies for 4 more years.

Resist We Much on October 30, 2012 at 10:07 PM

It says I am a non-spinning realist. And the death and destruction WILL help Obama. Fate might have intervened to help him.

Did you see Christie on Fox this morning? He was praising Obama like he was Jesus Christ and even slammed Romney a bit.

gumbyandpokey on October 30, 2012 at 10:18 AM

gumbypoked posted in the NPR thread earlier.

bayview on October 30, 2012 at 10:07 PM

One of the sickest things I’ve seen posted on here.

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 9:55 PM

RuPoll is on your team, but kudos to you for having some class and dignity.

Resist We Much on October 30, 2012 at 10:01 PM

I disagree with everything libfreeordie said regarding politics, economy, and social issues but he/she never went to the scummy and filthy level of this gumpyandpokey… This idiot gumpyandpockey brings nothing to this site but total idiocy, filth, and huge lies… That is why he should be banned from this site…

Dr. Tesla is on yours :)

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 9:59 PM

Lol! Funny!!! He has no team. He was banned! He was so well liked here we all wept. Say, you have a chance to get the fine folks at Morehouse straight yet? Hop to it slacker boy.

Illinidiva on October 30, 2012 at 10:06 PM

Do you seriously think a hurricane’s going to turn this around for O? He’s getting crushed on the economy, which is the number 1 issue.

wargamer6 on October 30, 2012 at 10:07 PM

“Ok, why is Christie giving Obama this unbelieveable photo op tomorrow?? I was fine with him saying that Obama did “an outstanding job,” but why not invite ROmney to tour NJ with him and Obama??

Priscilla on October 30, 2012 at 10:02 PM”

Easy.

Christie wants the nomination in 2016 and this is his path to achieving that goal. The guy is about self-promotion, first and foremost. Praising Obama is the best way to get fawning press.

gumbyandpokey on October 30, 2012 at 10:07 PM

Saying the hurricane is a gigantic opportunity and a lifesaver for Obama is just telling it like it is.

And with the way Obama is milking the situation, he darn well knows it.

gumbyandpokey on October 30, 2012 at 10:04 PM

Well…
We will have to thank Global Warming for hurricane that forced Obama to come back from Florida so he can be viewed as a Meteorologist..

Resist We Much on October 30, 2012 at 10:07 PM

If by some unbelievable scenario obama would win on this, then we were fu…d anyway… People obviously would have lost all sense. That will not be the case sorry to tell our resident trolls…

sandee on October 30, 2012 at 10:08 PM

So telepathy and racism? Gotcha.

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 10:05 PM

Again, I doubt he’ll be banned.

It’s funny. Ed and Allah point out Obama’s leadership failures, yet there’s a failure of leadership right here. A failure to deal with useless trolls.

wargamer6 on October 30, 2012 at 10:08 PM

In the midst of such a tragedy is not the time to have this discussion and you know it.

How utterly asinine. At the very moment the federal government is responding to the dire needs of its citizens its somehow inappropriate to point out the fact that only the federal government could coordinate the resources and manpower to respond to a disaster of this scale? Explain it to me. How does pointing that out, and then asking a candidate who said the federal government should not be in charge of disaster relief hurt any of the people effected by the storm?

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 10:08 PM

It’s time for the ban hammer for Gumbpokey. Cheering the deaths of 40+ Americans? He can take his friend, “libfreeordie’s/capitalist with him.

BettyRuth on October 30, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Admit it, you have absolutely no idea what this man will actually do when he’s in office.

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 9:57 PM

Did we have any idea in 2008 what obysmal would do when he’d be in office ?? Whatever Romney will do in office, there is absolutely no way that he will be as horribly incompetent as Obama . No way.

jimver on October 30, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Because Obama is the President and has the checkbook.

gophergirl on October 30, 2012 at 10:05 PM

2009:

Ice Storms Strike the Heartland: Where’s Obama?
The president has been living it up in the White House while people in flyover country suffer.

INC on October 30, 2012 at 9:35 PM

It’s true.

While I sympathize with those who have to endure Sandy I am aware of the fact that when disasters hit the rest of the country there is little notice or concern. We deal with natural disasters and death while no one notices.

BO could care less what happens in Flyover Country, and Sandy only gives him an opportunity to grandstand in Blue States.

I’m sick of all the whining. As for Christie and BO grandstanding, screw them too.

Get up tomorrow and clean up. We do it all the time. You can do it, too.

Cody1991 on October 30, 2012 at 10:09 PM

When did I cheer the deaths of anybody?

Saying the hurricane is a gigantic opportunity and a lifesaver for Obama is just telling it like it is.

And with the way Obama is milking the situation, he darn well knows it.

gumbyandpokey on October 30, 2012 at 10:04 PM

You called the hurricane a “Godsend” for Obama. Sounds like your awfully happy that it occurred. And with that goes the cheering for the deaths of American citizen just so you can dream that it will somehow save your idol.

Bitter Clinger on October 30, 2012 at 10:09 PM

Do you know what the acronym FEMA stands for?

libfreeordie on October 30, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Better yet. It’s getting more desperate with every post and crosses the line with more of us regulars every week. It’s only a matter of time before it does so with Ed or AP and we don’t have to deal with it again…

Gingotts on October 30, 2012 at 10:01 PM

Can’t be too soon as far as I’m concerned. Only an evil soul would cheer for Obama’s campaign when there are so many who have lost their homes and all their possessions, to say nothing of all those who lost their lives.

There are untold numbers of families who are grieving and suffering tonight on the East Coast, but all that dimwit gumby can crow about is Obama’s election chances.

Disgusting.
