Obama campaign now buying ads in … Detroit

posted at 7:39 pm on October 30, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mark Halperin and Jim Geraghty, who points out that Detroit’s TV market doesn’t reach Ohio. This is all about defending Michigan, which would have seemed crazy a month ago but now, in a world where The One is under 50 percent in Oregon, makes lots of sense. This is, after all, a state capable of electing a Republican governor (by a landslide) and a Republican legislature, and there’s a native son at the top of the GOP ticket. The last poll of Michigan — taken one week ago — showed a dead heat. I wonder what those Hopenchange internal numbers are showing right now. From Halperin:

An Obama aide tells me this on the Michigan ad buy:

“Restore Our Future went up with a $2 million buy in Michigan. We’re matching states where they go up. We’re not going to let them make a play anywhere.”

Both sides have enough money for these end-game ad forays. The real issues remain candidate time/visits, the psy-ops involved here, and the belief of some Republicans that a combination of Minnesota, Michigan, and Pennsylvania could surprise on Election Day.

My only question: How likely is it that any of those three states comes through for Romney if Ohio doesn’t? And if Ohio comes through, why do we need any of those states? Seems like maybe the Romney Super PAC’s ad buy is less about stealing Michigan to capture the presidency even if Ohio falls through than it is (a) forcing Obama to divert money to a formerly “safe” state, and (b) increasing the odds of a big red wave if there’s a final small tilt towards Romney nationally (or regionally) over the next seven days. In that case, he wouldn’t “need” Michigan to win but it’d be lovely to have it as proof of a mandate to govern, and that’ll come in handy in twisting Democratic arms during those fiscal cliff/deficit reduction negotiations.

Elsewhere in “painting the map red” news: Romney just went up with his first ad in Pennsylvania, a state that ABC moved from “safe Democratic” to “lean Democratic” just yesterday — along with Minnesota. In the northwest, Team Mitt may be eyeing not only Oregon but even Washington state(!) as having turned more purplish than anticipated. And here’s a new ad from Citizens United that’s going up in Wisconsin and New Hampshire — a.k.a. Romney’s Plan B — but it’s not aimed at drumming up GOP turnout. In fact, it’s airing not on Fox News but on CNN and MSNBC. When you watch, you’ll understand why.

Romney can’t win. The 7-Eleven “7-ELECTION2012″ coffee cup election predictor has Obama over Romney 59% to 41%. Romney is only winning Idaho, Wisconsin, and West Virginia. Vermont is a tie. Obama has the rest. Romney is doomed.

changer1701 on October 30, 2012 at 7:52 PM

It’s quite simple imo…the state polling is not nearly as good as National polling and it’s especially bad when many pollsters are either intentionally using unrealistic samples or are F’ing up their polls with false early voting #s. That’s what’s going on in Ohio,etc. These polls showing it tied or a slight O lead have like 30-35% being early voters when in reality it’s only like 15-20%.

I still think there’s a chance that Ohio bucks the trend and goes for Obama — he did spend a vast fortune on attack ads all summer long (while Romney couldn’t respond until after the convention). Even if those ads just shifted 3% of voters, that’s enough to make Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania equally good bets for Romney, and Iowa and Nevada better bets.

It will be interesting to see what happens next week.

NYT/CBS poll: Obama 48% Romney 47%. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10

The sample size is 563 LVs. Who the hell runs with a sample that small a week before election day?

I guess that they wanted Obama to be +1. In every poll, as the sample size increases and MOE decreases, Romney’s lead increases.

Anyhoo, breaking down the poll, which is 36/31/33 D+5.

* R has a +9 advantage in voter enthusiasm.

* R has a +12 advantage with Independents.

* R has a +17 advantage with whites.

* O is only pulling in 83% of non-whites (R gets 14%).

* R has a +6 advantage on the economy.

* R has a +6 advantage on immigration.

* R has a +15 advantage on the budget deficit.

* R has a +11 advantage on who will work better with Reps & Dems in Congress.

* R has a +9 advantage on leadership.

* 70% of Americans think Romney will not raise taxes on businesses.

* O is -6 on Libya among all adults. 51% of LV disapprove. 57% of Independents disapprove of his handling of Libya.

* 80% of Americans think Obama will raise taxes on businesses.

Despite the MSM’s best efforts, 75% of Americans have heard or read a lot about Benghazi.

* 54% of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track. (39% on right track).

Restore our Future has been airing ads here in MI for quite some time. Except for the SE portion of the state, MI is quite red at this point. How Michigan goes next Tuesday will depend on turnout. The SE portion of the state has lost so much population because of all of the lost jobs over the past 4 decades, that now they no longer overwhelm the state in voter influence.

Thanks. There are some positives for Obama (he leads by 5 on foreign policy, terrorism and wins the touchy-feely stuff). The problem for Obama is that they aren’t priorities in this election. The election is about the economy, unemployment, and the deficit, according to the polls.

If I were Romney, sure I’d like to be leading, but I’d rather be trailing by 3 in an over-sampled poll that relies on 2008 turnout and winning independents by double-digits, leading in the crucial categories (economy, jobs, deficit, etc), and have an enthusiasm advantage.

Since Americans started becoming “Independents” (around 1972), no presidential candidate has ever won the presidency while losing the Independent vote by more than 2%. There’s be one constant in both the national and state polls for the last month: Romney is beating Obama’s arse amongst Independents.

Resist We Much on October 30, 2012 at 8:51 PM

At this late point in the race, I seriously doubt there are anymore undecided voters. If they are still undecided now, I seriously doubt they will get off their comfortable behind and bother to go to the polls next Tuesday.

So nothing Obama does between now and then are going to swing any extra votes HIS way. However, if he stumbles badly, he could still lose some votes.

I believe, seriously believe, his voter ceiling is 47 to 48% of the vote in most states.

Instead of running ads and spending on GOVT in tight states like VA, NC Florida, Ohio and Colorado, the republicans are wasting money in Pa and Michigan. I take it they’ve written off Ohio, VA and NC which are must wins for the GOP.

LOL. You are correct gg.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) said President Obama offered to visit the city in the wake of Hurricane Sandy but Bloomberg told him that everyone has “lots of things to do” instead.

Bloomberg

gophergirl on October 30, 2012 at 9:00 PM

seeBS/NYT national poll
If stresses it was conducted pre-Sandy( because the hacks at seeBS and NYT will try to sell a big boost for Barry from Sandy)

another small sample, 563 LV
Barry 48 Romney 47 B +1 ( was +2 a week ago) MOE +/-4
Party R 31/D 36/ I 33 D+5
Romney leads among Indie 51 to 39

The only way these whorl polls can make the result to appear even close is to over-sample D.

bayview on October 30, 2012 at 8:52 PM

There is no way that a candidate who wins the independents by 4+ points is going to lose the elections let alone winning them by 10+ points… Liberals are delusional…

I totally agree and Obama ceiling 46-48% is showing in almost every poll in the last few weeks including the very biased polls that are insanely over sampling democrats i.e. the vast majority of the polls…

mnjg on October 30, 2012 at 9:04 PM

I’ve been saying for a month now that the enthusiasm level for Romney is much higher here in Michigan than for Obama. One indicator is lawn signs. Romney beats Obama 2-1. Four years ago Obama out numbered McCain by a landslide.

People here in Michigan are ready. It’s close and we still might go to Obama, but its far from a guarantee that the state is his.

Only in your delusional low IQ liberal brain that Romney has written off any of these states that he is certain to win on elections day. Get it in your head liberal, there are at least 10% of Obama 2008 “White Voters” who are going to vote for Romney in 2012 combined with at least 3% of Obama total voters from 2008 staying him in 2012 and these two factors would make it impossible for Obama to win the elections…

mnjg on October 30, 2012 at 9:07 PM

Romney is chasing Obama – not the other way around.

It occurs to me that if the election is close and Obama loses, he will almost certainly cry voter fraud. The more states Romney can win, and the larger his popular vote victory, the greater the chance that Obama will have to accept the result and go home.

And raycism. Don’t forget raycism.

There simply is no downside to going into Michigan. The optics of obama buying time in Detroit is absolutely horrendous. This is dispiriting indeed to the opposition.

Genderist!

My entire life is a performance art kabuki drama in which I disdain gender labels. If I was a lib, I’d get a MacArthur Grant, several honorary PhDs, and my own HBO series to honor my groundbreaking work of “taking people out of their comfort zones.” But no, I’m on the wrong side of the political fence, so all it gets me is awkwardness.
