Media cooperating with Benghazi cover-up?

posted at 1:31 pm on October 30, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

There has been a curious lack of curiosity among the media about the chain of events that left an American consulate largely undefended in a terrorist attack, resulting in the death of four Americans, despite a number of military resources at hand.  Does this equate to a cover-up by the national media, or at least cooperation on their part with the Obama administration to avoid answering questions about it?

Deborah Saunders, a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle, finds the lack of interest in this story very, er, interesting.  She argues that this isn’t a total media blackout by any means, but implies that the aversion to this story has a lot to do with the party affiliation of the President:

Some readers tell me that they see The Chronicle’s failure to run a rash of front-page stories as proof of bias. They have a point, but they fail to appreciate the local emphasis in today’s front-page placement, especially during a presidential election and World Series, which the Giants, incidentally, won 4-zip.

Most important is the resources issue. Most dailies don’t have foreign bureaus or reporters with the sources needed to break this type of story. “I don’t think there’s a bias issue, but we do have to rely on our primary news services,” Chronicle Editor Ward H. Bushee told me.

That doesn’t let the media off the hook. Saunders notes some very troubling information that has come to light in the last few days — through some good work at Fox News, among others — but which haven’t prompted much coverage or follow-up elsewhere.  And if this had happened in a Republican administration, Saunders argues, we’d be seeing a much different response from the media:

On Friday, correspondent Jennifer Griffin reported that sources told her that a CIA team, including Tyrone Woods who also died in Benghazi, had requested military backup during the attack but was told to “stand down.” The CIA dismissed the story as “inaccurate.”

A drone was deployed over Benghazi during an attack that lasted about seven hours. Yet, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters that he hadn’t known enough about what was happening in real time to authorize a military rescue.

The Chronicle’s most recent story on Benghazi ran on Oct. 25. It reported that on Sept. 11, the State Department e-mailed the White House that Ansar al-Shariah had claimed responsibility for the attack. That would be shortly after 6 p.m. Eastern time. What did Obama know that night, when did he know it and what did he do about it? Ditto Langley and the Pentagon.

Now ask yourself this: If George W. Bush were president, and the press didn’t know what he did on the evening of the Benghazi attack, do you think there would be the same focus in the media? I think we know the answer.

Michael Ramirez offers his Pulitzer Prize-winning perspective at Investors Business Daily on the media response:

Also, be sure to check out Ramirez’ terrific collection of his works: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion, which covers the entire breadth of Ramirez’ career, and it gives fascinating look at political history.  Read my review here, and watch my interviews with Ramirez here and here.  And don’t forget to check out the entire Investors.com site, which has now incorporated all of the former IBD Editorials, while individual investors still exist.

Imagine if it was Dubya and:

1) Our Libyan consulate was sacked on the anniversary of 9/11 resulting in the deaths of 4 Americans, including the ambassador.

2) Additional security requests had been ignored or rejected by the administration.

3) Requests for assistance during the attack were denied.

4) The administration blamed the attack on a spontaneous protest that never happened.

5) The administration detained an American citizen and held him in custody for over a month on the false pretense that he recorded a movie trailer that sparked the non-existent protest outside the consulate.

6) The President hopped a plane to Vegas for a fundraiser the morning after the attack.

Ed, you are being a bit circumspect. The MSM has been derelict in their duty, just as our President has been derelict in his. I believe has has knowingly lied, yet he takes offense at the suggestion that he would not inform us of events in Benghazi from the very beginning.

It occurs to me that if this man is reelected, it will be an unheard of age of corruption for the American government. Won’t even compare to the first term. Why wouldn’t it be? Perceived mandate from the people to keep on going.

And although he was never beholden to the media, next year he won’t be beholden to the American people. No more watchdogs. How can Congress get traction on corruption if the media won’t tell people about it and get their support?

He’ll get away with murder, or maybe he already has.

I wrote in comments on this site several days ago that the process in the works is Leftmedia-in-coordination-with-Obama-Axelrod-etc. are working the “Libya thing” into a version of history that benefits Obama’s phony “heroic legacy”…

They’re controlling the information, so they seem to assume they are, as does Obama, as does Axelrod, in a PROCESS of weaving a TALE that they’ve written. Which means, they are not reporting truth but writing a tale.

The “media silence” on the issue of OBama’s dereliction of duty or incompetence or treasonous betrayal as to Benghazi isn’t silence so much as it is a historical pool of awful water growing more foul by stagnation and that’s their goal.

I am literally sickened by this. Our operators, our pilots, our Soldiers, our Marines, our aircrew—hell, everybody in uniform, is able to function more aggressively because they know that, if injured, they will not be left to fall into the hands of the enemy. The PFC Jessica Lynch rescue mission is a case in point. That day, we flexed every available resource–a SOF Task Force, a diversionary Marine armored attack in a nearby neighborhood/bridge area, Predator feeds, a stack of close air support assets to include A10s/F15s, bombers etc…and why? Because we leave no one behind, that’s why. That is, until now…..until now…..now we have, let that sink in deep. We left 2 of our finest operators bleed to death as we watched mortar rounds rain down on them…..we watched—-and did nothing. We watched as our ambassador choked to death, locked in a cage….a ‘safe house’ mind you, on American soil, sovereign American soil, while Al Qaeda ransacked the place.

Subsequently, the ambassador, the equivalent of a 4 star General or Admiral, was dragged out of the building and who knows what happened to him.

we have regressed….we said that we ‘leave no man behind’ but we did…… we left those men to die and the POTUS, the SECDEF, the White House staff, the AFRICOM leadership, CENTCOM and any ISR operators on duty that night had better start fessing up as to why.

I am quite upset about this. On Sep 11th, it was these 4 men, tomorrow, it will be you or I.

Never Forget.

Economist Timur Kuran coined the term to explain why totalitarian regimes usually collapse suddenly. A preference cascade happens when people discover millions of others share their doubts about the Great Leader. Massive media bias has made the term applicable here, Mr. Reynolds said. The Barack Obama that Americans saw in the debates bears little resemblance to the heroic figure portrayed by the news media.

The crowds have been enormous at Romney/Ryan events this past week. If this is the start of a preference cascade, many Democrats may drown in the undertow. The Obama campaign has vacuumed up so much Democratic money there’s little left for other candidates.

In yet another fund-raising appeal on Tuesday, Mr. Obama said he and Michelle would be fine if he loses. If the president’s friends are indeed buying him a $35 million mansion in Hawaii, as Chicago blogger Kevin Dujan (Hillbuzz) claims, that’s certainly true. But public employee unions, crony capitalists and others who feed at the public trough have reason to panic.

Underlings must wonder if there will be legal consequences for the laws they’ve broken. I predict an orgy of document shredding Nov. 7.

The biggest losers could be “mainstream” journalists. Their blatant bias has dropped trust in the news media to an all-time low. It’ll plunge further if more evidence of collusion with the administration emerges. Nobody trusts a liar. There will be bankruptcies.

Turtledove on October 30, 2012 at 1:56 PM

Even when most of the media does cover Benghazi, the reporting comes across as the journalistic equivalent of root canal without Novocaine — a huge pain and they really don’t want to be there to begin with.

That’s also going to affect the coverage. If you’re really into exposing a story, like say, the Abu Ghirab prison incident, you get up early, stay late and basically are wagging your tail through the entire day of work. If it’s a story that makes your side look bad, even if it’s a far bigger scandal and threat to overall U.S. security, you do it really, really fast and keep it as short as possible, so it hopefully will do as little damage as possible, while you can still say you ‘covered’ the story.

The big media would rather chase Sandy all through eastern Canada and out into the North Atlantic over the next few days than cover Benghazi, not just because they don’t want to make Obama look bad, but they hope the lightworker can somehow make himself look good to swing voters over the next 168 hours by looking presidential in the storm’s aftermath (of course, to do that will also mean big-footing both Chris Christie and Andrew Cuomo, by trying to take federal credit for any state- or local-level efficiency in getting their areas back up and running. Neither of those guys is likely to become a wallflower, though Andrew might be persuaded to pipe down if they promise him a leg up in the 2016 presidential race).

Remember not so long ago how media was being criticized for what appeared to be a prejudice for the Obama 08 campaign? And the Left railed against those criticisms? Called the Right “nuts” and “fringe” and “wacky” for suggesting such a thing?!?

Obama was elected and presto, Journolist and the evil Axelrod’s involvement in same revealed! Not so “wacky” after all, those criticisms and suspicions.

The Leftmedia is most assuredly coordinating with the OBama crew about suppressing the Benghazi issue and Obama’s involvement in it. They’re attempting to rewrite the story and to feature an Obama that doesn’t exist but whom they’re making up.

right2bright on October 30, 2012 at 2:09 PM

I remember Michael Moore and numerous other liberal minions complaining about the minutes Bush seemed to wait after being told of the WTC attacks. Now we have in front of us evidence of a prolonged firefight, a live video feed, and numerous request for support from personnel engaged with the enemy that fell on deaf ears. What do they have to say now?

Roc on October 30, 2012 at 2:05 PM

Oh, I know this one!

“Don’t try to politicize this tragedy.”

What do I win?

No curiosity at all about General Ham being relieved that night as commander of AFRICOM. NONE.

This is the problem with all the aggregaters being under leftist control.

And Leftmedia clings to Axelrod like a Mothership.

They lap up and absord every.thing he doles out…and won’t print or say anything he’s condemned.

But it is raining outside and the wind is blowing!
Must report on this phenomenon! Today, tomorrow, the next day and, and, and, for at least a week. It is SO important!

Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods could not be reached for comment.

Naw. You don’t put out that much.

kingsjester on October 30, 2012 at 2:11 PM

Now ask yourself this: If George W. Bush were president, and the press didn’t know what he did on the evening of the Benghazi attack, do you think there would be the same focus in the media?

Is this a trick question?

rightConcept on October 30, 2012 at 2:11 PM

How does anyone explain the cheering and clapping in the spin rooms watching the debates when Dear Leader got in a zinger? Is that group think or something else?

d1carter on October 30, 2012 at 2:12 PM

If George W. Bush were president, and the press didn’t know what he did on the evening of the Benghazi attack, do you think there would be the same focus in the media?

We already know the answer. Leave aside the seven hours Benghazi went unanswered; there is public record of Bush’s actions in the first seven MINUTES after the second plane hit on 9/11/01, while his handlers prepped Air Force One and engineered his exit, and he was lambasted for that. And for pretty much every single thing other he did as a response to the attack.

And, don’t forget — isn’t this right, verbaluce — that OBAMA IS OFFENDED!!

You on the Left are engaged in a cruel and hideous assault on the American soul: blame and ridicule and try to chastise anyone who calls to question that you’ve committed wrongs. IN the case of Benghazi, very terrible wrongs.

It’s not about blaming your accusers. It’s about you being blamed by accusers who are righteously identifying your responsibilities for committing terrible wrongs.

Obama doesn’t get to Pony-Dance his way out of this.

Ace of Spades has the full video of Bret Baier’s latest investigative report on Benghazi.

That Ramirez cartoon is right on the money. The mainstream media are now co-conspirators in this mess, as far as I’m concerned — accomplices to the cover-up. I’ve blogged about it here:

Yes, and nearly everything he did during his presidency – for 8 years.

Expect the same if Romney wins. Once they get over the shock they will go full tilt after Mitt.

I not only mistrust the MSM….. I despise them.

Democrats and the media (BIRM) lie. They lie all the time.

If the Bard were alive today, “First, we kill the journalists!”

jukin3 on October 30, 2012 at 2:20 PM

Not only are they cooperating with the cover up, they are now complicit! They also have the Blood of American Heroes on their hands! The most shocking Scandal in the History of the country… A Betrayal Worthy of Judas! The Obama Enemy media have no qualms in helping to shut down conversations and questions on the Treason perpetrated at the highest levels, simply for the sake fo their Ideology? Really? Tell me how they shouldn’t be indicted, as well! Collusion, to cover up Treason, is not protected by the 1st Amendment! These Heartless Animals have to be held responsible for their actions! Treason, cannot be allowed to happen, nor can we accept that anyone can help cover it up, for the sake of their Ideology or party or any other reason, whatever it may be! Someone has to pay for crimes committed against the American People or like the muslim jihadis we are encouraging an even worse crime, an even greater Betrayal & Treason, the next time they decide their Ideology is more important than a Human/American Life! When do we say enough, America?
