There’s nothing inherently wrong with global business, offshoring, international supply and distribution chains, etcetera — in fact, those things are all a boon to economic growth that make us all richer.

Um, no. In the aggregate, of course, but tell the folks in Michigan that auto companies moving away from union labor has “made them richer”.

I’m all for free trade, in the aggregate it helps the economy, but something that we free market evangelists sometimes forget is that free trade does not make everyone richer. The invisible hand is not unicorn magic.

The “firewall” keeps moving backwards… I think the fire is winning.

Had a choice between buying a used Honda and a used Chevy. Took the Honda to my mechanic for a lookover. While inspecting it he tells me, without even looking at the Chevy that the Honda will last a lot longer than the Chevy.

My neighbor’s boss buys him a new car every four years. Last time, he chose a Chevy. This time he chose a Toyota.

It’s not how they handle when they’re new that counts. Heck, I rented a KIA Soul a few weeks ago. Handled like a pocket rocket but I could tell it wouldn’t last.

There was no confusion. Governor Romney misrepresented the facts as he so often does. In Ohio we know, for a fact, that the Jeep plant in Toledo is open in spite of the Governor being a “car guy”.

In theory…yes…in reality…no. The George Bush Chris Dodd and Barney Frank homeownership mandate financial disaster was in full free-fall. There was no one in the world with tens of billions of capital to take over GM. In addition, the suppliers to GM would have been left holding the bag and would have been driven into bankruptcy by the dozen the company could be re-structured like every other bankruptcy to make sure creditors and suppliers would be paid. The “moral hazard” of the bailout is a legitimate concern…the reality is there was no other choice the choice to force the UAW back to the table to negotiate reasonable benefits packages to avoid taxpayer funding. Even Ford wanted rejected the bailout because they knew how to fix their problems and didn’t need government mismanagement it keep the secondary suppliers solvent. Romney has been 100% against Obama for four years (until the last debate of course.) Obama was right on able to use the taxpayer-funded bailout to payoff the union for their support and it will cost Romney Ohio + Michigan and Obama the election since many voters see this as nothing more than more government overreach.

I think UAW got the bailout more because they already have supported Democrats. I suppose it is the chicken or the egg.

All while another article by Bloomberg now reports that Fiat is considering moving Jeep production to Italy instead.

Opposing the auto bailout is going to cost Mitt the election. Ohio sure benefited from the bailout. This is a Hail Mary to the low information voters. Desperation…

Yeah, the people who used to work for GM and Chrysler dealers that Obama’s team shut down based on politics as much or more than finance really benefited. The people who work for Honda in Marysville, Ohio really benefited from Obama’s support of their competitors, didn’t they?

At GM’s current stock price, the taxpayers are about $23 billion in the hole. If Obama’s team had treated the UAW the same as other unsecured creditors, the UAW would have taken a $26 billion haircut. Effectively the taxpayers have given over $20 billion to the UAW.

Romney didn’t oppose a bailout. He advocated a structured bankruptcy with financing backed by the federal government. What he said was that giving GM a bailout check without getting rid of the work rules and inefficiencies that are part of the UAW contract won’t fix the underlying structural problems with General Motors.

but I recall Obama deciding which car dealerships would be closed and choosing Saturn for the scrap heap because they were a lower wage alternative to the bloated union built gm cars
