Romney ad in Ohio: So, about the president betting on American workers…

posted at 12:41 pm on October 29, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

President Obama has been hitting hard on the ostensible success of his taxpayer-funded bailouts of General Motors and Chrysler in any way he can, touting the supposedly approaching comeback of American manufacturing due to his skillful “I bet on American workers” policies and bloviating about how that cold-hearted Mitt Romney would’ve simply let the American auto industry eat cake, or something. It’s been a big campaign theme in the all-important dead-heat battleground state of Ohio, and over the weekend, Team Romney hit back with this new television ad:

Last week, the news that Chrysler and its Italian parent Fiat are in talks to consider building Jeep plants in China caused some confusion in the media about the auto company actually shifting all Jeep production to China, which isn’t the case — and at an appearance in Ohio last week, it seems that Team Romney did seize on the news too fast by positing that U.S. production facilities might be jumping ship and heading overseas. However, this ad isn’t perpetuating that misrepresentation — I think it’s simply calling President Obama out on his intellectual inconsistency.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with global business, offshoring, international supply and distribution chains, etcetera — in fact, those things are all a boon to economic growth that make us all richer. The point is that Team Obama has made a point of tearing down global business generally and Mitt Romney specifically for the oh-so-heinous crimes of investing overseas, offshoring, et al. Then, it turns out that an auto company to which the president gifted a government-funded bailout as one of his “bets on America” and now constantly points to as a harbinger of American job creation, does plenty of those activities themselves.

Anyhow, if Team Obama really wants to start talking about honest representations of the auto bailouts, then they’ve got some serious ‘splainin’ to do of their own.

It’s absolutely breathtaking to see the media hyperventilating over the Jeep line in the ad, after all the garbage Obama has thrown out there this campaign. One good turn deserves another.

Frankly, I’m at the point where I want Romney to run birther ads. Anything to seal the deal :)

Really Mr. Secretary?

Well that sure didn’t take long. Seems I recall predicting to someone just Friday that we would get a “new” Benghazigate story by today. Right on cue, and early in fact, we get one Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta projectilely vomiting the latest batch of lies and misdirection in a crude attempt to cover up for the previous batch of lies and misdirection.

Misdirection #1. “There is a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking going on by people who don’t know what’s going on.” Really Mr. Secretary? Are you implying that the DoD does know what’s going on or are you saying that if the DoD doesn’t know what’s going on nobody else possible could either?

Lie #2. When asked why fighter aircraft had not been sent to the scene to at least do “low and loud” passes over the consulate or to lay down suppressing fire the Secretary said that they “were concerned about creating civilian casualties that might further inflame the situation.” Really Mr. Secretary? The Consulate was already in flames, how much more inflamed could it get? Anybody who has ever been in combat will tell you that once a firefight breaks out that civilians flee the area as quickly as possible or crawl into the deepest hole they can find to keep from getting their heads blown off. What did the Secretary think these “civilians” he’s so concerned about were doing? Sitting out in their lawn chairs watching the show and roasting shish-ka-bobs of the flames of burning vehicles?

Lie #3. “We weren’t going to deploy assets into a situation we hadn’t fully assessed.” Really Mr. Secretary? Just how much more information did you need? You had both Flash Traffic and emails coming from inside the Consulate as the attack was taking place. You had CIA assets at the annex requesting permission to led assistance to the Consulate that could have both provided support and on a further on the ground situation report. You had Predator drones circling overhead providing you live video feeds in both visible and infrared light. What else were you waiting for Mr. Secretary? Did you think al Qaida was going to post their Order of Battle to help you make a decision?

This was followed by the most monstrous, shameful and shameless lie of all.

Lie #4. With a shrug of his shoulders Mr. Panetta concluded, “This was all over before we could do anything about it.” Really Mr. Secretary? It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that the designator for US Army Delta Force units is QRT (Quick Response Team). Do you need “quick” defined for you? Why did they remain on the ground in Sicily two hours away? Why were they not embarked on their KC-130 aircraft to at the very least circle off shore where they could then either go into action or return to base as the situation developed? Do not such QRTs also have AC-130 gunships attached? Aren’t these aircraft designed for and known for being able to lay down pinpoint accurate suppressing fire? Is there not a US Navy CVN and LHA stationed full time in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea? Just what are those QRT teams, aircraft and that full Battalion of Marines there for if not for just such situations?

I’m sorry Mr. Secretary no one but the gullible, naïve or stupid is buying any of this retched street pizza your laying out. The real shame is not that hack politicians lie to us; we’ve come to expect it. No the real shame is that no one in the so-called mainstream media is asking anything close to these kinds of follow up questions when presented with such blatant and obvious lies.

The whole GM auto bailout scheme is such a freaking joke. Parts from all over the world are assembled into these cars built by GM- and that’s not changing any time soon. The majority of jobs lost occurred over the years when the parts manufacturing business was driven offshore – to keep GM competitive and keep the bloated Union workers employed.

The Pro-UNION Obama voters ARE the problem…not the solution.

But that type of campaign ad won’t win any votes either.

In theory…yes…in reality…no. The George Bush financial disaster was in full free-fall. There was no one in the world with tens of billions of capital to take over GM. In addition, the suppliers to GM would have been left holding the bag and would have been driven into bankruptcy by the dozen. The “moral hazard” of the bailout is a legitimate concern…the reality is there was no other choice. Even Ford wanted the bailout because it keep the secondary suppliers solvent. Romney has been 100% against Obama for four years (until the last debate of course.) Obama was right on the bailout and it will cost Romney Ohio + Michigan and the election.

Hmm, he needs to work that up to about 100 czars, maybe after he’s re-elected, then he can just abolish CONgress altogether, since its existence has been quite annoying to him and it hasn’t really made any effort do his bidding as instructed the last couple of years.

The czars can simply replace CONgress and do its work while at the same time enthusiastically do whatever Barry wants.

See, its one thing to BS and lie to a “State that benefitted from GM’s bailout” – its another to know the majority of Ohio auto workers are under Honda and Ford and not GM.

They are also called “real voters” in Ohio.

So chalk one up for Team Dumbo in the WH – a meme that hurts more than helps, being optics don’t trump reality.

Opposing the auto bailout is going to cost Mitt the election. Ohio sure benefited from the bailout. This is a Hail Mary to the low information voters. Desperation…

Yeah, the people who used to work for GM and Chrysler dealers that Obama’s team shut down based on politics as much or more than finance really benefited. The people who work for Honda in Marysville, Ohio really benefited from Obama’s support of their competitors, didn’t they?

At GM’s current stock price, the taxpayers are about $23 billion in the hole. If Obama’s team had treated the UAW the same as other unsecured creditors, the UAW would have taken a $26 billion haircut. Effectively the taxpayers have given over $20 billion to the UAW.

Romney didn’t oppose a bailout. He advocated a structured bankruptcy with financing backed by the federal government. What he said was that giving GM a bailout check without getting rid of the work rules and inefficiencies that are part of the UAW contract won’t fix the underlying structural problems with General Motors.

Should the taxpayers have given the UAW $26 billion just so they’ll support the Democrats?

AUTO BAILOUT BOMBSHELL: Fiat Says Chrysler, Jeep Production May Move to Italy

“To counter the severe slump in European sales, (Fiat CEO Sergio) Marchionne is considering building Chrysler models in Italy, including Jeeps, for export to North America.

So, let’s be real clear here, we are talking about vehicles that will be built in Italy and exported to America. The evidence is clear that Fiat is looking at ways to move production of vehicles from the US to elsewhere, whether it be China or Italy, costing American jobs. This is becoming indisputable, despite outcries from certain parties to the contrary.”

There was no confusion. Governor Romney misrepresented the facts as he so often does. In Ohio we know, for a fact, that the Jeep plant in Toledo is open in spite of the Governor being a “car guy”.

I drove a Chevrolet last week, they really do handle nicely.

Had a choice between buying a used Honda and a used Chevy. Took the Honda to my mechanic for a lookover. While inspecting it he tells me, without even looking at the Chevy that the Honda will last a lot longer than the Chevy.

My neighbor’s boss buys him a new car every four years. Last time, he chose a Chevy. This time he chose a Toyota.

It’s not how they handle when they’re new that counts. Heck, I rented a KIA Soul a few weeks ago. Handled like a pocket rocket but I could tell it wouldn’t last.

the reality is there was no other choice the choice to force the UAW back to the table to negotiate reasonable benefits packages to avoid taxpayer funding.

Thanks for including that essential point.

Axelrod and others are peppering Twitter with links to articles trying to prove this false. What is the underlying issue that they claim is a “lie” in Romney’s ad?

What is the underlying issue that they claim is a “lie” in Romney’s ad?

Here.

Is this an Ohio ad, or a Michigan one?

The “firewall” keeps moving backwards… I think the fire is winning.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with global business, offshoring, international supply and distribution chains, etcetera — in fact, those things are all a boon to economic growth that make us all richer.

Um, no. In the aggregate, of course, but tell the folks in Michigan that auto companies moving away from union labor has “made them richer”.

I’m all for free trade, in the aggregate it helps the economy, but something that we free market evangelists sometimes forget is that free trade does not make everyone richer. The invisible hand is not unicorn magic.

Figures a mouthbreathing subject of the Party would link to Party propaganda like talkingpointsmemo.

You half-wits are so ridiculous.

Meh! Where’s my free obama-money and obama-phone? That’s all that the dregs, er, Democrats want to know about.

If I could express myself that cogently, someone would be paying me for my thoughts.

Thank you for yours.

It is criminal in my mind, not just impeachable.

I agree. I believe it is called deriliction of duty.

Linking to TPM? That’s odd. I can’t seem to find any information on Benghazi on Talking Points Memo. Why is that? I’m stumped.

Sorry, but that ad sucks. I hope his election doesn’t turn on this one.
