Quotes of the day

posted at 10:34 pm on October 29, 2012 by Allahpundit

There were limitless political possibilities to consider. The Huffington Post ran an exclusive about how the hurricane could disrupt pollsters’ “ability to conduct interviews or to reach the millions of Americans who may soon be without electricity or telephone service” — thus playing havoc with the tracking polls. Writing for washingtonpost.com, Democratic strategist Carter Eskew predicted that the storm damage might make it “hard” for Obama “to be at rallies in Iowa or Colorado.”

Nobody did more hurricane war-gaming than Politico, which examined every possible political permutation: It could help Obama in Virginia and Ohio; it could hurt Obama in Virginia and Ohio; it could blunt the impact of political ads; it could magnify the impact of political ads; it could make Obama look presidential; it could magnify any Obama mistake; it could stop Romney’s momentum; it could complicate Obama’s “ground game”; it could help New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s 2016 presidential bid.

In other words: Nobody had any idea.

***

Just the forecast of a potential disaster can make politics look small. So far, the Romney campaign has stopped fund-raising e-mails into affected states, made a campaign bus available for relief efforts, started taking up collections in campaign offices and put up a blog with weather-related advice.

And the itinerary may change.

Optics are tricky, said one top Republican who added the schedule may change depending on what the storm does. A disaster somewhere would make campaigning anywhere difficult.

Mixing politics and weather is to double-down on the unknown.

***

Obama as Commander-in-Chief in a time of national emergency, not just a beleaguered incumbent presiding over a worst-ever economic recovery. The rally-around-the flag phenomenon. People looking to government for help. Beyond psychology, it might also help Obama since he seems to be leading among early voters, and the aftermath of the superstorm might prevent Romney voters from getting to the polls next Tuesday.

But the other side of that trade is this: Millions of Americans are being forced to spend lots of money on hurricane preparations — extra food, flashlights, batteries generators, plywoood, hotels — at time when they are trying to rebuild their savings. Millions of Americans whose incomes and take-home pay fell not only during the Great Recession but also during the Not-So-Great Recovery — or as I put it, the Long Recession. These unexpected expenditures might well remind many of a) how precarious their financial situation is and b) how they’re not back to even despite a supposed three-year economic rebound.

And if you think Romney is ahead, Sandy might well freeze the race to his advantage.

***

There is also the effect Sandy will have on the media, which already has focused primarily on the weather and much less on the presidential campaign. This gives candidates less space and time to influence events. Ordinarily, this would be a valuable time, a period when campaigns have one last week to shape voters’ preferences, but this will become extraordinary difficult…

Finally there is the big question of voting behavior. How will severe weather affect voters in states such as Virginia?

Many observers expect that this could depress voting in lower-income areas, which are often badly affected and which have the least resources to recover, a development which would naturally hurt Democrats. It also has caused cancellations in early voting that might have benefited Obama’s vote total.

Another unpredictable factor is the sheer anger and frustration that can come from a weather crisis like this, which might very well intensify the broader sense of malaise that exists in the electorate. Even to those who are not in the path of the hurricane, this could feel like one more punch in the face to a nation tired of waiting for real economic recovery.

***

Limbaugh said that media’s coverage of the storm will soak up news about Mitt Romney.

“The minute you tell yourself you got the game figured out, the golf gods make sure that you screw up the next two rounds. Well, the weather gods have interceded here,” Limbaugh said.

“They have intervened in this campaign and in this effort. You’ve got potential devastation and destruction in the media capitals of this country: Washington and New York,” the conservative talker continued, according to the transcript. “And the residents and the occupants of these media organizations in Washington and New York are the ones who are gonna be standing out in the street telling everybody else how bad it is. Not how bad Romney is. Not how dangerous Romney is. How dangerous the storm is.”

***

According to news accounts and a Republican source familiar with the outside group activity, Americans for Job Security went up with TV ads in Pennsylvania over the weekend, and Restore Our Future goes on the air there Tuesday.

And now both this source and Karl Rove speaking on Fox News Monday evening suggest American Crossroads just might also go on the Keystone State TV airwaves as early as Wednesday…

The storm has scrambled everything, including TV ad strategies, but there is no doubt that if the public polls are even close to correct, all these end-game ad buys are going to put some resource pressure on Chicago.

***

Fugate did not address whether the election could be delayed — a question that federal officials said last week is up for states to decide.

“Whether the election can be postponed or not is a legal black hole,” said Adam Winkler, a law professor at the University of California at Los Angeles. “There’s very little precedent for such an act.”

Federal law requires presidential elections to be held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November, but it also provides that if a state “has failed to make a choice on the day prescribed by law, the electors may be appointed on a subsequent day in such a manner as the legislature of such State may direct.”…

At the moment, Fugate said, authorities don’t have enough information about Sandy’s impacts.

***

“We’re coming down to the 11th hour. We’re facing a violent storm,” Clinton said. He waited a beat, then added, “It’s nothing compared to the storm we’ll face if you don’t make the right decision in this election.”

But the teachers and professors in our educational institutions, are as bad a culprit as the journalists.

But how often does government action fix anything more than it screws it up? No, I have to disagree there. A reverse “fairness doctrine” wouldn’t be a good idea. Even if set up in good faith, allowing government control over such things set a bad precedent and the left will certainly abuse it to the point that we’d look back at the good old days where “moderates” like Bob Schieffer and George Stephanapoulos were allowed on the government networks.

No, I do think the free market is working. Just slowly and incompletely. CurrentTV is going under. AirAmerica dead as a doorknob. MSNBC is a joke watched only by those well within their own echo chamber. FoxNews kicks the rear of all of those regularly.

I also think that technology is very useful there and has been ever since Matt Drudge broke the Lewinsky story. Twitter has been amazing this cycle and between there and Youtube the people are become their own fact-checkers on a press embarrassingly on the left. If there is one important step to be taken in protecting the sanctity of our press, it is not to give government greater control over the media, but to by God do everything possible to prevent them from getting their paws on the Internet.

Finally, if there is a place to bring about a firmer hand on such things, it is with party action. The cycle that we don’t get four Democrat moderators is the cycle in which the GOP candidate is willing to say “no” and force them to the negotiating table. In my opinion the only one of the four from this year I would have agreed to would have been Lehrer, whose record has earned him respect as a debate moderator. Maybe I would have allowed Schieffer, but there would have to be a Fox News person traded in response… and not Juan Williams or Geraldo.

That’s the key. There is a core of non-brainwashed people who get the fact that the MSM is far left while they claim neutrality. Even the Gallup poll that showed 60% of people think the media is biased should give some hope to the ability to turn this around. But it is up to this core of people to go fix the problem. It’s not just the MSM though, it’s also the education industry that needs a good cleaning out, starting with the teachers’ colleges. That’s where we are in deep yogurt, to get free-thinking youth, they have to be deprogrammed from the indoctrination they are receiving in the state schools.

The best way to prevent another 0bama is to arrest the owners and editors of MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC, try them for treason for attempting to throw a presidential election, and then hang them until dead from a streetlight in public and let their bodies rot for a month.

Until the MSM is reformed by force of law, another 0bama will always come.

cane_loader on October 30, 2012 at 12:33 AM

Man, cane, I hear ya, and right now there are things I’d like to do to these bastards that would make a hanging feel like a day at the beach. One of my dream desires for them — a water boarding without a time clock. Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle.

But, the Constitution is more important to me than my own desires and what would make things better right now. Yes, the major media today are where they like it, on their knees and mouths wide open, for their radical, liberal and first black president. But their numbers are dwindling, the new media making them irrelevant as time goes on.

When the Founders wrote press freedom in the Constitution, they knew how important it was to our victory over tyranny. The King then had his own newspapers, and they did what today’s MSM are doing for Obama. But, there were several other news outlets that raged against the King and stirred things up against them all, many of them killed by the King in the process, patriots all. They were the alternative media of their time and, thus, freedom of the press was born.

This, of course, explains the Obama’s and the UN’s current efforts to control the internet, to clamp down on a free press. It has always been the tyrant’s objective to control the people and their knowledge, as always it will be.

I guess it can be considered okay and funny to threaten physical violence against a presidential candidate if that candidate is white? I can only imagine the reaction to a “funny” ad from a major conservative group featuring a white man threatening, for laughs, to hit a black candidate in the groin.

And the threats to riot? And the sexual stuff at the end? I get that this was supposed to be humorous, but the whole thing is pretty sad. Whoever thought this would be an effective ad? I guess it is supposed to fire up Obama’s young voters, but I have a feeling it will do Obama more harm than good. It is pure garbage.

The dumbed-down electorate is the real problem, not the press so much, and the cause of that is a government that wants them that way (for votes and co-dependency) and, sad to say, lazy or non-existent parents. Hate to say it, but when life’s so easy and good, as it is in this country, even if you’re poor and given things that someone else is paying for, it’s a formula for disaster.

People talk about our country, if it stays on its current course, becoming like today’s Greece. I’m more concerned that we are becoming like yesterday’s Rome.

Cindy Munford on October 30, 2012 at 2:42 AM

My general feeling, the storm brings chaos, but the chaos is so haphazard that it probably cancels out most political implications. The one thing that may be affected, is turnout. More specifically, it’ll hurt early voting in a couple states, and few of the harder hit coastal cities may have a slightly lower turnout due to the damage caused by the storm.

Locations further inland will be less affected by this. Sure there are reports of a blizzard that hit Virginia, and some places are likely to lose power due to downed lines, both impacts however will by largely repaired by election day however, so again that mostly hurts early voting.

Now, how all this affects overall turnout is hard to say exactly, namely because we don’t know exactly how the early vote is turning out in several key states. My guess is that it largely freezes early voting where it is, regardless whether that is Obama or Romney. If its Obama, early voting being out a week makes it slightly easier for Romney to catch up in said state on election day.

Still, we don’t really know, and my feeling is that the chaos generally ends up nullifying itself. We’ll have a better idea tomorrow, what if any affect it has on turnout.

i hadn’t realized that inside the beltway libs are getting a little nervous about nate silver

For all the confidence Silver puts in his predictions, he often gives the impression of hedging. Which, given all the variables involved in a presidential election, isn’t surprising. For this reason and others — and this may shock the coffee-drinking NPR types of Seattle, San Francisco and Madison, Wis. — more than a few political pundits and reporters, including some of his own colleagues, believe Silver is highly overrated.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2012/10/nate-silver-romney-clearly-could-still-win-147618.html

and it turns out that an R operative has been (statistically) mocking silver.

i think the biggest deal will be philly. there will be places w/out power on the 6th…the left would love to suspend the election in PA for a couple of weeks. that may happen in nj, de, md, ny because of power problems

but very expensive to mount another election…so barry sends $$$$$?

let’s just hope mitt wins wi OH, WI etc..then it is moot

It’s faniciful how some political analysts are saying storm damage might hurt Republican turnout.

We really were hoping we wouldn’t actually have to climb over glass with our bare hands to get to the polling place. Turns out we, to quote Joe Biden, may literally have to.

Would that O’s busses full of zombies, illegals, plants, and Alzheimer’s patients could say the same.

BKennedy on October 30, 2012 at 3:23 AM

I don’t believe that this storm is going to still be a major problem to interfere with election day. There may still be some neighborhoods without power, but overall, the main businesses will be back up and running.

The winds have finally started to blow here in western MI, we are on the fringe of this huge storm. But these winds are not as bad as other storms that have blown through here since I moved back to this state 6 years ago. We aren’t supposed to get a lot of rain, just regular type of rain during the day on Tuesday.

Wow, disgusting. I just can’t get over the shameless threats of violence against Romney.

Look. The cover-up of “Benghazigate” is far more important that Watergate ever was!

We need a “Congressional Investigation” of the incident at Benghazi and we need it post haste! I understand there is no way that is possible before election day, but—if ever an incident deserved investigating by the Congress, this horrible event in Benghazi is it. It is looking more and more as if grounds for impeachment proceedings are present.

Yes, if only Obama was a Republican, there would be no need for commentators to beg the Congress to investigate—or—for commentators to opine at the reluctance of the MsM to investigate.

It is what it is.

The Mainstream Media in America is an organ of the political left—as is President Obama. There is simply no way we are going to get anything approaching impartial reporting or a REAL investigation of Benghazigate from the MsM.

It behooves every voter to weigh what little we know about Benghazigate and decide if we want to have Obama continue to lead this country after January 20th, 2013.

For me, it is not just a matter of trust, it is a matter of honor—NATIONAL HONOR.

America deserves better than we have gotten, or, are likely to get from Obama.

As you enter the voting booth ask yourself, what else has Obama lied to you about. What else is Obama lying to you about today? Then for the sake of our country—do what’s right.

Chrysler has factories in China that build Jeeps, and the company is stepping up productions there. So which part of the ad is untrue? Where did Romney say in that ad Jeep factories in the US will be shut down and jobs transferred to China and Jeeps will only be built in China? Will it not be better if Jeeps are built in OH or MI and exported to China?

http://www.wnd.com/2012/10/benghazi-cover-up-this-dwarfs-watergate/

Limbaugh says most of the national media is now ignoring the revelations from the emails.

What we’re watching here today is the equivalent of Woodward and Bernstein helping Nixon cover up Watergate,” he said. “The mainstream media is Woodward and Bernstein. Watergate is Benghazi. Except this time, Woodward and Bernstein are helping Nixon cover it up.”

“It’s just maddening,” he continued, “and to have the story basically ignored and covered up today is evidence to me of just how devastating it is. I think the regime is barely holding its campaign together. I think this campaign is leaking. Imagine a dike with all the holes in it, and the holes are the states, and the regime has got people plugging the holes with fingers and doing everything they can to stop the flow. I think they’re very close here to being swept away by a tidal wave. I think everybody involved knows it.”

He suggested several theories as to why the events have transpired as they have, including “gross, unbelievable, incalculable incompetence;” “bald-faced lying;” and a political calculation since Obama has been claiming al-Qaida terrorists have been decimated under his watch.

“There’s another possibility here,” added Limbaugh. “It could be very simple. Obama simply wasn’t engaged when this was going on. He wasn’t around. He didn’t want to be engaged. He didn’t want to be told. He didn’t want to have to do anything. And therefore, they were paralyzed. Nobody knew what to do because he didn’t care.”

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2951752/posts

Let’s go back to 2004. Cindy Sheehan had been turned into a media star during the 2004 presidential election for no reason other than that her son had died and she was willing to lend her name to the left’s campaign. There was no specific issue that Sheehan raised, but nevertheless the media was willing to cover her every sneeze.

And now 2012. Charles Woods, the father of Tyrone Woods, one of the Navy SEALS killed at the Benghazi consulate, has made serious allegations about his encounter with Hillary Clinton and the refusal of the Obama Administration to save his son. And the media has conducted a complete blackout of the story.

The only mainstream media outlets to report on it are ABC News where Jake Tapper occasionally challenges the administration, but Tapper carefully left out Hillary Clinton’s statement that they were going after the Mohammed filmmaker, which may be the most damning part of the story. And the Christian Science Monitor which leans left but also has a history of being somewhat independent. And that’s not counting conservative figures like Jennifer Rubin at the Washington Post.

The Media finally covers Libya… sorta.

(May as well have a little bit of humor this morning.)

CPT. Charles on October 30, 2012 at 7:15 AM

The relatives of the slain Americans and the American people deserve better. Questions that need to be answered include:

Why did the administration insist the attack was in response to a protest over an objectionable video when they knew from the start it was terrorist caused by an al-Qaida affiliate?

Why, with assets only two hours away, did the administration not respond to multiple calls for help
?

ted c on October 30, 2012 at 7:16 AM

Again, on October 28th, a Fox News interview(video) lifted the veil of secrecy on the “Obama Benghazi cover-up”. This time Lt. Col. Tony Schafer, Army intelligence officer and author, told Fox that, according to his sources, President Obama watched the Benghazi attack live in the White House Situation Room. So, the president was in position to be completely informed about the developing situation and to have issued his alleged “Directive Number One” that instructed U.S. Government agencies to “make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to” and that “that everyone in the state department, our military, the CIA, you name it, had number one priority making sure that people were safe.

But the question remains, if Obama issued such a directive, why wasn’t it carried out?

Anti-Control on October 30, 2012 at 7:20 AM

There is an urgent need for full disclosure of what has become the “Benghazi Betrayal and Cover-up.” The Obama national security team, including CIA, DNI and the Pentagon, apparently watched and listened to the assault on the U.S. consulate and cries for help but did nothing. If someone had described a fictional situation with a similar scenario and described our leadership ignoring the pleas for help, I would have said it was not realistic—not in my America – but I would have been proven wrong.

We now know why Ambassador Christopher Stevens had to be in Benghazi the night of 9/11 to meet a Turkish representative, even though he feared for his safety. According to various reports, one of Stevens’ main missions in Libya was to facilitate the transfer of much of Gadhafi’s military equipment, including the deadly SA-7 – portable SAMs – to Islamists and other al Qaeda-affiliated groups fighting the Assad Regime in Syria. In an excellent article, Aaron Klein states that Stevens routinely used our Benghazi consulate (mission) to coordinate the Turkish, Saudi Arabian and Qatari governments’ support for insurgencies throughout the Middle East. Further, according to Egyptian security sources, Stevens played a “central role in recruiting Islamic jihadists to fight the Assad Regime in Syria.”

Somebody high up in the administration made the decision that no assistance (outside our Tripoli embassy) would be provided, and let our people be killed. The person who made that callous decision needs to be brought to light and held accountable. According to a CIA spokesperson, “No one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need.” We also need to know whether the director of CIA and the director of National Intelligence were facilitators in the fabricated video lie and the overall cover-up. Their creditability is on the line. A congressional committee should be immediately formed to get the facts out to the American people. Nothing less is acceptable.
