Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on October 29, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

There’s nothing worse than attempting to ridicule a critic by offering a ridiculous — and easily checked — assertion. Recall this moment from the final debate, when our current Commander-in-Chief lectured his opponent on the modern American military?

You — you mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets — (laughter) — because the nature of our military’s changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.

Actually, submariners call those boats, Mr. President.  Ships that go underwater are called sunk.  But that’s merely a technicality.  On bayonets, Barack Obama had no idea at all that those are still standard issue in the Marine Corps — and that we have a lot more Marines now than we did in 1916:

According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. military has at least 600,000 bayonets in stock and plans to acquire 175,000 more.

Given that there were about 200,000 men in the Army and National Guard in 1916, according to National Review, that would mean that there are three times as many bayonets today and probably will be at least four times as many than before World War I.

According to the website marines.com, every Marine receives bayonet training in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and on the Bayonet Assault Course in Recruit Training. The bayonet makes a rifle ”just as effective in close combat situations,” according to the website.

That’s the kind of thing that one might expect someone who spent the last four years as C-in-C to know, even without trying to puff himself up as a military expert.  Only amateurs would make this kind of mistake, and on the biggest stage of them all, no less, in what was clearly a pre-planned attack line.  Didn’t Obama and his team even bother to check with their own people at the Pentagon before deploying this in the debate?  Apparently, Obama’s just as talented at research as he is at military expertise.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

It beggars the imagination King Putt thinks he’s General Manly Throw McMomJeans Hero of Hole 19 now. If he was trying to say space and cyber commands are “futurewars” then he may want to get capability there since the Chinese have a good ASAT program and we get hacked weekly.

Night Owl on October 29, 2012 at 8:13 AM

I was shocked, not so much by what he said but how he said it. The total disdain he showed for Governor Romney came through loud and clear. Once the initial cuteness of it wore off, the facts started to fade and you realized so much of what he said was wrong, you begin to understand why this administration is such a failure.

If you look at the debates you really do see an administration that feels it knows everything and isn’t willing to compromise, especially with Republicans, who they feel know nothing and have no ideas. BIden showed it, with his behavior, as did Obama, more so in the last debate than at other times.

I read somewhere that Obama was the genius that came up with the horses, bayonets, and ships crack. He was quite proud of his wit and was going to use that line come hell or high water. What a maroon (thanks, Bugs).

If he cared to interact with the military beyond their capacity as awesome photo ops, he could have found out the ships vs. boats information from any active or former Sailor worth his/her salt…such as myself.

I’d also like to point out that without their contingent of “small boys” (destroyers, cruisers, frigates, etc…), carriers are simply called “targets.” Their long-range capabilities are awesome. Short-range…well, that’s what battle groups are for.

twidgetnator on October 29, 2012 at 8:18 AM

Everybody knows by now that facts and numerical assertions are secondary to this SCOAMT. That line hit its desired target when the press in the spin room erupted in applause and cheers. It was a cynical play to show his base just how ballsy and edgy he was, pwning this old plutocrat with his rapier like wit. The rest of us just saw a petty and mean spirited man who didn’t even have a grasp of the facts.

Yes, we all know that Obama is a clown with (well fed and watered) delusions of adequacy and we are all voting in accordance with our beliefs and hopes for a better future. There does exist a slim wedge of undecided voters who have not been paying attention (to much of the past 4 years it seems) and who still have the possibility of voting for the last shiny object that catches their attention before entering the booth. Our best bet is that they see Mitt’s message and it hits home.

While Obama can claim nearly four years and CinC, remember that Governor Romney was Commande in Chief of the Massachusetts National Guard for four years. During his tenure as Governor, thousands of MA ARNG soldiers were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Unlike Obama, Governor Romney’s commitment for support for the men and women in uniform is unquestioned. In 2006, As CinC of the MA National Guard, he accepted the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award on behalf of the Commenwealth of MA for the state’s exceptional support for their employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. Only 15 employers are so honored each year.

BetseyRoss on October 29, 2012 at 11:02 AM

This “bayonettes and horses” line MAY have come from Obama, but most likely came from one of his campaign underlings. See, Obama ran his debate like he runs the office of President…he delegates it to someone else. Thus what was supposed to be remembered as a zinger on Romney and perhaps even win some points with military types…ended up being a boomerang that came back around to smack the president in the mouth instead.

Flora, from your link, I’m liking this part of the commentS

dbogdan1960 … It reminds me of the documentary films I’ve watched over the years showing German civilians at the waning days of WWII foreswearing any knowledge or allegiance to the NAZI party of Hitler’s Germany. It’s as if they had been potted plants in the past decade or so, having no knowledge or participation in the process that led up to the Second World War.

I used to do tours for the Berlin ITR/ITT out to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. We’d drive past the train station towards the concentration camp – about 1.5 klicks – and point out to the guests that the prisoners were marched down this very route past all these large single family homes to be welcomed by the “Arbeit Macht Frei” banner over the camp gate.

We’ll see how many will deny ever voting for Oboobie. Would be funny if some tally were to come out years from now — that more will claim to have “not” voted than admit the truth.

When Ed first started this feature he was already behind on the silliness and incompetence of this regime. I will be so glad when it is over.

BetseyRoss on October 29, 2012 at 11:02 AM

I am going to miss it. it is the first thing I go to when I get to my computer each day. Ed has vowed to end the feature when the boy king’s reign of crap is over. This is as it should be even though there is enough to cover one Obamateurism each day for.. for.. forever!

OK, how did Okie get that law passed when Texas and others have had it held in abeyance by the SC?

Must be because they not the kind of Southern Racists Chrissy Mathews warned us about.

CorporatePiggy on October 29, 2012 at 11:20 AM

Heh, mebbe AZ and other States should have taken note of OK’s HB 1804. We managed to run off a bunch of illegals in spite of Chamber of Commerce and other organizations that filed for appeals.

Didn’t Obama and his team even bother to check with their own people at the Pentagon before deploying this in the debate?

Haven’t you realized the left doesn’t bother with facts, they go with how they ‘feel’ it is. I noticed that during the Bush years.
