Clinton: That Jeep ad really hurt Obama’s feelings, you know

posted at 7:21 pm on October 29, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

And so the Jeep/China/offshoring drama continues. Team Obama was up in arms over the weekend because, they claimed, a new Mitt Romney ad perpetuates a false attack by pointing out that erstwhile-bailout-recipient Chrysler is considering building new Jeep production facilities in China. The only thing is, while Romney did misspeak while on the stump last week about Chrysler’s production plans, everything in Romney’s ad is completely true and mainly serves to point out that Obama gave taxpayer money to a company that offshores, even though we know how much President Obama just detests offshoring in practice and in principle, don’t you know.

So, Team Obama’s response? Fight facts with more fire!

Yes, because doubling down on your false “let them eat cake” narrative on Romney’s proposed version of the auto bailouts isn’t misleading at all.

But wait, there’s more! At a campaign rally on Obama’s behalf today, President Clinton went into full-on shameless demagogue mode, h/t the Weekly Standard:

I saw the reports of Governor Romney’s latest ad saying that the president had allowed Jeep to move to China. And so, this morning, before he left Florida and went back to Washington, he said, ‘You know, of all the things Governor Romney has said that probably hurts my feelings the most.’ He said, ‘You know, I never had any money when I was a kid, and the first new car I ever owned I was 30 years old it was a Jeep. I would never move Jeep to China.’

Well, far be it from Mitt Romney to argue with any of the president’s lingering Jeep-sentimentality by pointing out his intellectual inconsistencies on offshoring — how very gauche of him.

That it does so, poorly, speaks to its’ lack of skills.

Erika, I love your articles here on HA–no matter the subject, you knock it out of the park every time.

Now, for the nitpicking journalism major in me: I think you meant to say “how very gauche of him” in your last sentence.

If memory serves, guache is a hearty Spanish stew made of puréed rooster and hominy served in an inverted conquistador helmet. Governor (and, come November 7th, President-Elect) Romney is many wonderful things; however, I believe it to be a disservice to reduce the governor to a delicious Spanish stew served in anachronistic headgear, whether intentionally or facetiously.

(OK, just kidding about guache.)

So either Obama didn’t work until he was 30, or he didn’t finish school until he was 30 or he CHOSE not to buy a new car until he was 30 – too bad he won’t give us the same opportunity – to CHOOSE what we want to do with our lives!

Most corporations manufacture products for the domestic Chinese market within China. GM, Toyota, VW, and other leading automakers run manufacturing facilities within China to produce vehicles for the Chinese market today. Chrysler has never said it was closing US Jeep operations and it’s amazing to see that whining about the auto bailout is live and well.

Obama is the worst liar ever. He lived a solid upper-middle class lifestyle. His step-father was a high-up muckety muck with an oil company. His grandmother was a bank vp. Sure, maybe his mother was a complete loser hippie, but that was by choice, not circumstance. Maybe they lived in a small apartment … but GEESH, they lived in Hawaii and he went to the #1 private school there!!!

Obama had a pretty easy life. Even his classmates commented that he didn’t have any racial resentment and wasn’t dirt poor like he always claims.

Sherman1864 on October 30, 2012 at 12:38 AM

Obama may have been poor as a kid, but he was poor in Hawaii and the South Pacific, not South Side Chicago.

There are other examples of Obama-approved offshoring: he’s cool with companies like Apple or Dreamworks moving jobs to China as long as their execs are major fanboys, donors, and fundraisers.

kd6rxl on October 30, 2012 at 1:56 AM

“Obama took GM and Chrysler into bankruptcy and sold Chrysler to Italians who are going to build Jeeps in China,” said the voice-over on the Romney campaign ad. “Mitt Romney will fight for every American job.”

Chrysler has factories in China that build Jeeps, and the company is stepping up productions there. So which part of the ad is untrue? Where did Romney say in that ad the Jeep factories in the US will be shut down and jobs transferred and Jeeps will only be built in China? Will it not be better for Ohio if Jeeps are built in OH or MI and exported to China? Spare us you faux outrage, Barry and his sucking chimps like chumps.

bayview on October 30, 2012 at 6:36 AM

Lost in all this hand-wringing about Obama’s poor hurt widdle feewings is the underlying premise of the discussion, that the president retains the power to “move” production of domestic models to overseas plants in the first place.

So much for the government not pulling the strings of these companies as a result of bailing them out.

Two friggin’ pages and no one has respelled ‘gauche’??

That’s the correct spelling, from the French word for “left” (opposite of right). An accurate description, since both Obama and Clinton are leftists.

Interestingly enough, the Italian word for “left” is “sinistra”. There IS something sinister about socialists!
