Quotes of the day

posted at 8:01 pm on October 28, 2012 by Allahpundit

“This tragedy turned into a debacle and massive coverup or massive incompetence in Libya is having an effect on the voters because of their view of the commander in chief,” McCain said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “And it is now the worst coverup or incompetence that I have ever observed in my life.”…

“I don’t know if it’s either coverup or gross — the worst kind of incompetence, which doesn’t qualify the president as commander in chief,” McCain said…

“Somebody said to me the other day, ‘This is as bad as Watergate.’ Nobody died in Watergate,” McCain said.

***

Ohio senator Rob Portman talked on Fox News Sunday about a “shocking breakdown” with regard to the Obama administration’s response:

This is not about politics. This is about a huge national security issue that affects all of us and there was a shocking breakdown, operationally, not to have the security there in the first place. And then not to respond to these guys, in their pleas for help for 7 hours, during a firefight. It’s unbelievable and now, we are hearing that the president of the United States, based on his own words, issued a directive immediately after he found out about the firefight, saying that he wanted to be sure those people on the ground were safe and they were getting what they needed. It didn’t happen. This means either that the president’s order was not followed, which would be a breakdown in terms of the White House procedure, or, it means the order wasn’t issued. We need to find out about this, it is not about politics, it is a very serious situation. After the fact, of course, there’s also been a lot of confusion about what happened and why it happened.

***

It seems obvious that Panetta is trying protect Obama from responsibility for the Administration’s Benghazi response. I don’t think that works. The decision to outsource the call is still a presidential decision.

But there are two problems bigger problems with the Panetta doctrine. First, Panetta says they didn’t have real-time information. Uh, if having a live video feed and real-time reports from assets on the ground for hours doesn’t count as real time information, what does? And, if as rumors suggest, the drones monitoring the situation were armed, the idea that the administration was trying to avoid some kind of “black hawk down” situation seems incomprehensible.

Which brings us to the second, I think bigger, problem with the Panetta doctrine. If the circumstances in Libya didn’t meet the “enough information” threshold for a rescue attempt or some other form of intervention, then what does?

***

While Americans were under assault in Benghazi, the president found time for a non-urgent, politically useful, hour-long call to Prime Minister Netanyahu. And his senior national staff had to find time to arrange the call, brief the president for the call, monitor it, and provide an immediate read-out to the media. I suspect Prime Minister Netanyahu, of all people, would have understood the need to postpone or shorten the phone call if he were told that Americans were under attack as the president chatted. But for President Obama, a politically useful telephone call—and the ability to have his aides rush out and tell the media about that phone call—came first.

So here are a few more questions for the White House: While President Obama was on the phone for an hour, did his national security advisor Tom Donilon or any other aide interrupt the call or slip him a piece of paper to inform him about what was happening in Benghazi? Or was President Obama out of the loop for at least an hour as events unfolded and decisions were made? On the other hand, national security staff were obviously with the president during and immediately after the phone call—otherwise how could they have put out their statement right away? Surely his aides told the president about what was happening in Benghazi. Was there then no discussion of what was or what wasn’t being done to help, pursuant to the president’s first directive that everything possible be done?

***

We know this much: What Barack Obama said is unambiguously false. Members of his administration have not provided information to the American people about Benghazi as they have received it. And in many instances, the opposite has been true. The Obama administration has used every means at its disposal to avoid sharing information about the Benghazi attacks—not only with the American people, but with Congress, too.

Sources tell The Weekly Standard that the administration is ignoring—or denying—routine requests for information from the congressional committees with oversight on national security. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” says one congressional Republican. “Basic questions—unanswered for literally weeks.”

One could argue that this is good news. An administration refusing to provide information about the attacks is an administration that isn’t providing misleading information about those attacks. And that’s what the American public got for the better part of four weeks.

***

“Why didn’t Governor Romney prosecute the case on Benghazi? Pat, and everybody else has been fulminating about it for the last two weeks. He wisely stayed away from that because it’s a pretty made-up story, frankly, and he’s going to leave that to surrogates,” Eleanor Clift said about the controversy surrounding the terror attack on a U.S. consulate in Libya…

“They’re trying to pretend that the White House was lying and covering up, which shows the complete ignorance of how intelligence is gathered and how government operates,” Clift said.

***

***

Later on in the show, Wallace put a similar question to Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA): “I can understand how it would be politically embarrassing for the administration if it turns out the drones were armed and weapons not fired when the U.S. americans were under attack for 7 hours, but I can’t understand how it would give up valuable intelligence. Can you tell me directly: were the drones armed or not that were flying over Benghazi?”

Warner offered no comment: “This member of the Senate Intelligence Committee is not going to make any comments on drones on the record, off-the-record or anywhere else.”

Your comparison reminds me of the one Jenna Jameson made between 0-bow-mao’s and Romney’s first tweets on 9/11.

Romney’s: On this most somber day, America is united under God in its quest for peace and freedom at home and across the world.

Flora Duh on October 29, 2012 at 6:45 AM

He did. The poll essentially says it is a tie. A purported 3 points swing for Barry can easily be statistical noise when MOE is 3.1.

What is funny is that politico thinks it is from Barry hitting the “binders” hard.

Obama leads among women by 11 points, 54 to 43 percent. The gap had narrowed to six points a week ago, but much of that survey was conducted before the GOP nominee’s comment at the second debate that he had reviewed “binders full of women” as part of a gender diversity effort as Massachusetts governor. Obama and his allies have also been hitting full swing at Romney as an enemy of womens’ rights on abortion and contraception in their advertising and speeches.

You are right about everything you said here.

Benghazi is a black hole for 0-bow-mao – I am crossing my fingers that if the drones there were armed, as appears to be the case from Chris Wallace’s interview yesterday with Warner and Udall, the info gets out before the election. I believe Romney has already got this in the bag, but that would GUARANTEE a landslide if that were to occur!

Still, national security is an important issue in this campaign, down to the last moment of balloting. And so the Romney-Ryan campaign might wish to peruse a new video from Secure America Now, http://www.secureamericanow.org/, reminding Americans what has happened in Libya and around he Middle East under Obama. The Republicans need to remind Americans that Obama has, indeed, failed on his constitutional oath to “preserve, protect, and defend.”

And for that failure, the Obama-Biden ticket deserves to pay a heavy price.

Night Owl on October 29, 2012 at 7:45 AM

“Anytime a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans who were serving our country get killed, we have to figure out what happened and fix it,” he said, speaking with Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski in New Hampshire. “But I do take offense with some suggestion that in any way, we haven’t tried to make sure that the American people knew as the information was coming in what we believed.”

He also pledged to bring accountability to the government if the response was mishandled.

“If we find out we that there was a big breakdown, and somebody didn’t do their job, they’ll be held accountable,” he said, before taking responsibility for the event. “Ultimately, as commander-in-chief, I’m responsible, and I don’t shy away from that responsibility. My No. 1 responsibility is to go after the folks who did this, and we’re going to make sure we get them.” Video

“But I do take offense with some suggestion that in any way, we haven’t tried to make sure that the American people knew as the information was coming in what we believed.

Can someone explain to me what the hell that even means?

OK. He must be a muslim because he is easily offended, although he gets offended with things instead of by things. Then he goes into the quadruple negative so that no one can tell what the f*ck he is saying, except that since you have video, you can verify that his lips were moving, which means he was lying. Also note the use of the word “we”, which is unusual for Obama, except when blame needs to be distributed, at which time he becomes very inclusive.

It roughly means, “I will say whatever it is, not matter how disconnected from reality it may be, that portrays myself as a serious and responsible person who not only loves the truth, but who loves sharing it with others. In addition, don’t you dare suggest I am not a sincere person!”

New Poll Projects: Romney 52, Obama 47

The bipartisan Battleground Poll, in its “vote election model,” is projecting that Mitt Romney will defeat President Obama 52 percent to 47 percent.

[snip]

The projected outcome by the Battleground Poll is close to that of the Gallup Poll. Last week, Gallup said Romney leads Obama 49 percent to 46 percent in its model of the electorate’s composition on November 6.

The Battleground Poll is conducted by [Ed]Goeas of the Tarrance Group and Celinda Lake of Lake Research Partners. Goeas is a Republican, Lake a Democrat. The survey is affiliated with Politico and George Washington University.

‘This is as bad as Watergate.’ Nobody died in Watergate,” McCain said.

So why isn’t Team GOP threatening Ogabe with impeachment the way the Dims did to Nixon.

It must be that the GOP doesn’t have enough votes in the House?

Oh wait …

Can he be impeached if he loses next week? They would have to hold hearings first, and then have the vote, and then send it to the Senate, where it will be stalled and/or killed by Reid. I think he deserves it, I just don’t know how it works well enough to answer your question. Others have said he should be tried for Treason instead.

Rather than simply acknowledge a generous, decent act, you feel the need to view the action through your own hyper partisan political lens? And weren’t you just complaining that people on this site were talking about the effects of the hurricane in terms of politics?

Throwing Barry out by his ears next Tuesday is imperative. You can’t impeach a president already out of office, but full investigation and revelation of Barry’s incompetence and dereliction of duty will minimize his effectiveness to harp and attack Romney from outside.

Funny you should talk about talking politics with the storm coming. A liberal radio station in Asheville NC was saying it’ll bode well for the president because they would tend to have more states Romney expected to win effected by the storm. I guess liberals hate anyone who votes Republican?

The projection results are included in the GWU/Battleground poll, but naturally nobody is reporting it except The Weekly Standard.

Romney, though, is again winning independents. Driven largely by the economy, the Republican now leads with this set of swing voters by 10 points, 50 to 40 percent.

The poll’s headline is “Barry regained lead” when it is a statistical tie when MOE is 3.1. But also buried is this finding that Romney is leading by 10 among Indies. gumbypoked celebrated a tad early last night.

Unroughly, he was saying that his administration’s changing story about Benghazi has been due only to new, additional incoming data which is helping to clarify our understanding of what happened over there, not to any dishonest political spin on their part.

The ‘I’m offended’ aspect is a typical behavior for a control freak who’s lying, and wants the spotlight pointed away from himself.

Oh LibDie…

Here is what Clinton said about Sandy..
Since you like political Grandstanding and all.

Waterbury — On the eve of a hurricane-induced break in the political season, Bill Clinton gave Democrats a 30-minute pep talk Sunday, framing U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy’s race for U.S. Senate as an election of national interest.

“We’re coming down to the 11th hour. We’re facing a violent storm,” Clinton said. He waited a beat, then added, “It’s nothing compared to the storm we’ll face if you don’t make the right decision in this election.”

Much like, “How dare you!”

For those on the East Coast and surrounding areas affected by the storm… Coffee’s on, peanut butter, crackers, jugs of water, matches and batteries are in “to go” bags. Keep safe.
