Quotes of the day

posted at 9:16 pm on October 27, 2012 by Allahpundit

The White House on Saturday flatly denied that President Barack Obama withheld requests for help from the besieged American compound in Benghazi, Libya, as it came under on attack by suspected terrorists on September 11th.

“Neither the president nor anyone in the White House denied any requests for assistance in Benghazi,” National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor told Yahoo News by email…

“Would the secretary of defense make such a decision on his own? No,” [Bill] Kristol wrote. “It would have been a presidential decision.”

“He’s wrong,” said Vietor.

***

Bill Kristol suggests that it had to be a decision by Obama himself not to help the Americans under siege in Benghazi and that David Petraeus is signaling exactly that with the CIA’s emphatic denial that the decision came from his shop. If that’s true, at what point does Petraeus have to speak out? If the reports are true, I think you can make the case that Petraeus should resign in protest. But that’s based somewhat on speculation about what I think happened. I don’t know for sure. Petraeus does.

***

“President Obama today said that he gave an order to everyone while the attack was going on to do everything they could to secure the personnel,” [former Reagan assistant secretary of defense Bing] West said. “Now that’s really big because that means that those who were turning down [former Navy SEAL] Ty Woods when he was asking for the help were going against the orders of the president of the United States.”…

“A chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff doesn’t take an order from the president when he says ‘do everything’ and not put that in writing and send it out to the chain of command,” West said. “If that actually happened the way President Obama today said it happened, there’s a paper trail and I think people reasonably enough can say, ‘well can we see the order?’ because hundreds of others supposedly saw this order.”

“But if there is no order then people have to ask some very basic questions, ‘what the heck happened?’” he said.

***

1.) To whom did the president give the first of his “three very clear directives”—that is, “make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to?”…

7.) Was the president made aware of the repeated requests for assistance from the men under attack? When and by whom?…

9.) Did the president refuse to authorize an armed drone strike on the attackers?

10.) Did the president refuse to authorize a C-130 [Spectre gunship] to enter Libyan airspace during the attack?

***

[A]s of right now, outside of a very few exceptions, the CorruptMedia has coordinated with the White House to create a complete blackout around this story. Not even yesterday’s denial from the CIA that indirectly implicates the White House garnered any media attention.

In the closing days of a reelection campaign the CorruptMedia is desperate to see Obama win, it’s glaringly obvious that nothing this potentially damaging to the president will be allowed to see the light of day — at least not until after November 6.

Had Obama answered Clark’s question yesterday, he would’ve violated this unspoken blackout agreement by making news. This would’ve forced the CorruptMedia to cover a story they’re desperate to pretend doesn’t exist. Obama knows his Media Palace Guards are covering for him, and he knew that wouldn’t have been possible had he done anything that nudged the story.

The ONLY thing it had was the special effects and cinematography tricks.

thatsafactjack on October 27, 2012 at 11:01 PM

The fact, Jack, is that I agree with you. And wrote it so.

The cinematography and special effects made 2001 what it was.

Way, Way Out?

Reluctant Astronaut?

C’mon get real, they weren’t even in the same class. Heck, I would nominate “Mission Stardust” as a contender before those two.

Marooned could have done it. But it had contemporary special effects and despite a better story, isn’t remembered any where near as fondly as 2001. The same with Silent Running, witch had neater robots than R2-D2. I know, sacrilege in some circles, but true.

Dang, I cannot remember the name of the flick that sent a single astronaut to the moon and he had to make his way to another lander to survive. That one was better than 2001. The fact is, none of them were 2001 and it gets the credit for being the ground breaking film in the genre.

Three words MISSING from the “secret” 60 minutes video:

“Benghazi”, “terrorist” and “attack”

Specifically – this phrase:

Obama has YET to say these words in this phrase – DESPITE what Colmes says!!

Bill Kristol suggests that it had to be a decision by Obama himself not to help the Americans under siege in Benghazi and that David Petraeus is signaling exactly that with the CIA’s emphatic denial that the decision came from his shop.

Then why did Petraeus tell the House Intelligence Committee that it was a demonstration over the internet video and why is he still basically hiding?

Actually, the news on Gallup is worse than just the outlier sample falling off. That would have caused an immediate bump for Obama. But this has been a point or two each day, Romney just bleeding support and Obama consistently gaining.

Went from 52-45 to 50-47.

Tomorrow will be fun since Obama will be gaining on Rasmussen, according to Ras himself!

I named those two comedies as examples because they were comedies, made cheaply, and yet… had some of those same ‘special effects’ used in “2001″.

The point I was making was that it was HOLLYWOOD who said that film was great. They are the ones who handed out the awards. They are the people who host the Oscars every year, and determine who and what wins one. THEY are the same people who INVEST in those films, either monetarily or their entire career rides on the success of those films. Its in their interest to convince the rest of us that these films are whatever they say they are and they spend an obscene amount of money to do just that.

I agree with you about the other films that were better and I’m very gratified to learn that you’re making those choices for yourself. I meet far too many people who are content to believe whatever the PR departments want them to believe. :)

Petraeus can be very Clintonesque. He has a history of it. I wouldn’t trust that weasel unless he was under truth serum and even then not very much.

Andrew C. McCarthy -

Boot’s attack on West is an effort to defend a surpassingly foolish statement in which Gen. David Petraeus cast Israel as the source of all America’s woes in the Middle East. To his great discredit, the general — in a Clintonesque fashion which, as we shall see, is probably not a coincidence — simultaneously denied making the statement, grudgingly admitted making it while minimizing its significance, and accused West and others of misrepresenting his views. In fact, the general’s critics quoted his words at length, placed them in unmistakable context, and drew from them the same commonsense conclusion drawn by Israel’s gleeful critics — for whom Petraeus is the hero of the moment.

FYI Hurricane Sandy:

http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/tracking/at201218_5day.html

From Jeff Masters’ blog.

http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=2277

This post has a satellite photo that shows you the Sandy’s enormous size. This is a long entry, and I only picked a few things out—believe it or not.

Sandy is a massive storm, with tropical storm-force winds that span a 660-mile diameter area of ocean from a point even with central Florida northwards to a point off the central North Carolina coast. . . .

Sandy’s diameter of tropical storm-force winds are predicted to expand from 660 miles to 760 miles by Sunday afternoon. This will increase the total amount of wind energy of the storm, keeping the storm surge threat very high. . . .These storm surge heights will be among the highest ever recorded along the affected coasts, and will have the potential to cause billions of dollars in damage. . . .

Sandy is expected to have tropical storm-force winds that extend out more than 400 miles from the center, which will drive a much larger storm surge than its peak winds would ordinarily suggest. The full moon is on Monday, which means astronomical tides will be about 5% higher than typical, increasing the potential for damaging storm surge flooding. Fortunately, Sandy is now predicted to make a fairly rapid approach to the coast, meaning that the storm surge will not affect the coast for multiple high tide cycles. . . .

I agree that the cinematography was great. However, when I see a movie, I want a plot, not a piece of modern interpretive art. After reading the book, the movie made some sense. Kubrick did a horrible job in that respect; even the monolith in the first scene had absolutely no context.

Not according to Dr. Clarke. From Wikipedia:

As is clearly stated in the novel (Chapter 16), HAL stands for Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer. However, about once a week some character spots the fact that HAL is one letter ahead of IBM, and promptly assumes that Stanley and I were taking a crack at the estimable institution … As it happened, IBM had given us a good deal of help, so we were quite embarrassed by this, and would have changed the name had we spotted the coincidence.

I ain’t bashin’ ya bud. Only cautioning you in case it doesn’t bear fruit.

Don’t crawl out on a branch before you know it can support you.

This rumor ain’t there…yet.

cozmo on October 27, 2012 at 11:38 PM

Whether the info that Obama has nominated a replacement for General Ham is a rumor or not, I have no idea. I just posted the websites with that information which was also confirmed and commented on by Panetta. Hard to believe that all of those websites would be reporting the same thing and it turned out to be a rumor. I only read the Gateway Pundit and Stars & Stripes sites, so what sites you read may be different.

If you think we believe polls from the same liberal media slaves that lie for Obama you are mistaken. Secondly winning in a poll doesn’t mean you get votes on election day that you wouldn’t get otherwise so chill a$$hole or get of the site.

Oh …Gumby is stroking himself…’r herself on those polls..

General Ham then received the order to stand down. His response was to screw it, he was going to help anyhow. Within 30 seconds to a minute after making the move to respond, his second in command apprehended General Ham and told him that he was now relieved of his command.

But if that were to happen wouldn’t you be saddened that the candidate you supported lost?

Or are you nothing but a filthy liar too cowardly to admit you’re supporting Barack Obama to a board full of conservatives that already knows that fact.

It’s one thing to be a troll, but to be so gutless to stand for what you believe when asked point blank just shows what a pathetic creature you truly are.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will nominate Army Gen. David Rodriguez to succeed Gen. Carter Ham as commander of U.S. Africa Command and Marine Lt. Gen. John Paxton to succeed Gen. Joseph Dunford as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced Thursday.

Both appointments must be confirmed by the Senate.

Rodriguez is the commander of U.S. Army Forces Command and has served in a “variety of key leadership roles on the battlefield,” Panetta said.

He’s “a proven leader” who oversaw coalition and Afghan forces during the surge in Afghanistan, and “was the key architect of the successful campaign plan that we are now implementing,” Panetta said.

In announcing Ham’s successor, Panetta also praised the work Ham has done with Africa Command.

“Gen. Ham has really brought AFRICOM into a very pivotal role in that challenging region,” Panetta said. “I and the nation are deeply grateful for his outstanding service.”

Last week, Panetta announced that Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford will succeed Gen. John Allen as the top commander in Afghanistan. Thursday, he said Paxton will step into Dunford’s current position.

Paxton is the commander of U.S. Marine Corps Force Command, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe and Fleet Marine Force Atlantic. Panetta called Paxton “an exceptionally capable leader” who will join the “growing cadre of senior military leaders who have deployed to combat theaters… throughout their careers.”

And were it not for the selfless bravery of Ty Woods, who went AGAINST the order to stand down, the body count would have been in the thirties.

John the Libertarian on October 27, 2012 at 9:49 PM

This.
On another note, Al Qaeda hates us. I wonder if they planned and executed this attack knowing how close our election was and that this could impact it to America’s detriment. Whichever candidate wins, the country will be distracted and vulnerable. If Obama wins this scandal will dog him til the committees are done with it. If Romney wins he will be a new president with all the distractions of a transition and trying to turn our economy around. GWB was a new president on 9/11/01. I hope there are serious folks in our military and national security teams paying close attention.
