Bill Clinton’s long game for Hillary

posted at 6:46 pm on October 27, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

Is there some sort of mystery behind the new found love festival going on between Bill Clinton and Barack Obama? I mean, he’s an ex-president from the same party as the current White House occupant. Ostensibly they should share the same general vision for the country. It’s not like he’s going to vote for Romney, so clearly he’d be supporting Obama, right?

That sounds fairly obvious, but should it be this enthusiastic? They had their share of spats during the 2008 Democratic primary, and things got rather testy at times. Are those woulds fully healed by now? That’s the question Dana Milbank tackles this weekend. What’s up with the bromance?

How to explain this budding “bromance,” as first lady Michelle Obama puts it, between her husband and Bill Clinton?

The 44th president and the 42nd president are indeed having a whirlwind affair in the closing days of the campaign. President Obama takes Clinton on three campaign stops next week, stopping in Orlando, Youngstown, Ohio, and Northern Virginia to kick off the last full week of the race.

Apparently some are seeing the shadow of Hillary on the wall here.

Sen. John McCain floated a theory last week about the bromance. The Arizona Republican, in a conference call for the Romney campaign Tuesday, told reporters that there are “some that think this may have a lot to do with 2016 and the president’s wife, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Of course, I would never suspicion such a thing, but there are some real jerks around who think that might be the case.”

I am one of those jerks. I don’t subscribe to the prevailing theory that Clinton’s efforts to boost Obama are about solidifying his own legacy. Clinton is a shrewd strategist, and he surely must have grasped that it is highly unlikely that Hillary Clinton, or any other Democrat, will win in 2016 if Obama does not win in 2012.

Milbank is hardly the first to toss out this theory, but it depends on the assumption that the US economy is on the way back, albeit rather slowly at the moment. Under this scenario, no matter who is president for the next four years, the economy will fight its way back as it’s always done after receiving a stiff body blow. It may be faster under Romney or slower under Obama, but the general outlook will be better either way in 2016 than it is now. And whoever holds the keys of power in the White House is going to get to take credit for it.

If you sign on for that set of assumptions, as Milbank explains it, then another logical one follows. If Mitt Romney wins the election next week, he’s going to have a pretty easy glide path for a second term. If, conversely, Obama wins, he will credit his policies with the reviving economy and whoever the Democrats nominate next should be the beneficiary of that good will among the voters.

But wait… Hillary isn’t interested in working any more, is she?

Hillary Clinton continues to deny interest in another run, but she is already inching away from a similar vow that she would not serve as secretary of state in a second Obama term. “A lot of people have talked to me about staying,” she told the Wall Street Journal in a recent interview.

This could give her time to repair any damage to her reputation caused by security lapses that led to the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans. Her longtime aide in charge of protecting her image, Philippe Reines, has engaged in a series of high-profile squabbles with media outlets recently, which is more suggestive of an aspiring candidate than of a retiring diplomat.

Her campaign theme is already being prepared by her husband, who is establishing that the expansion of the next four years will be attributable to Clintonian methods. “We created 22 million new jobs and turned deficits into surpluses,” Clinton says in his new ad for Obama. “President Obama’s got it right. We should invest in the middle class, education and innovation, and pay down our debt with spending restraint and asking the wealthy to pay a little more. Sound familiar?”

I’m still not sure about this one. It’s fairly easy to write this off as some political parlor games in the closing days of the campaign, as we all wait for it to finally be over. And I’m still not sure how much I buy the idea that Hillary is ready for another shot at the brass ring, particularly in 2016 when she will be 69 years old. But then again, if anyone should know it would be Bill. (Assuming he’s not still sleeping on the couch.) I’ll leave the call on this one up to you.

Hillary is toast – fat, burnt, treasonous toast.

It is unlikely that:
1) In 2016 Obama will be POTUS; and
2) Very unlikely that Hillary will be able to extend any Democratic dynasty to 12 years, even if he WERE POTUS.

JFKY on October 27, 2012 at 6:52 PM

Hillary had everything going for her in 2008 and her party still found a way to reject her as they tend to do for their establishment front-runners. I still doubt she even tries in 2016, but even if she does I expect she loses in the primaries again. She’s a dinosaur from an old time, when the Dem primary voters will be screaming to go even farther left with some moonbat like Warren or slick tax and spend hack like O’Malley.

That’s their trend, and considering the facts that they are most likely going to be coming off a loss, and Democrats never understand to move to the center after widespread losses, I can’t see them looking to anybody even remotely tied to Bubba.

Bill and Hillary Clinton’s entire life has been based around their personal political ambitions. They are not going to simply “go quietly into the night” now. Mitt Romney is the same age as Hillary Clinton. I don’t think age will be a factor here.

I believe Hillary is most definitely planning for a run in 2016, and she’s planning for it based on the idea that Obama is going to lose this year. I think she knows that handwriting is on the wall. And she feels that she’ll be perfectly positioned to run for the nomination after the Democrats having spent four years regretting the choice of Obama — I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “I wish I’d voted for Hillary” — and another four spent having lost control of Washington because of Obama.

At the same time, I believe they’ll be prepping Chelsea to begin her career in politics. Hillary sees potentially eight years of being back in the White House, and that would put enormous political resources in a position to be available for Chelsea.

No, I think we’re far from rid of the Clintons.

Shump on October 27, 2012 at 7:00 PM

Dude- Bill isn’t just sleeping on the couch; Bill is in a whole different zip code. I’ve said it before, but I do enjoy repeating myself, so- If Obama gets elected, Hillary has “0″ chance in 2016. Obama is so going to run his end game around Congress for 4 years and enact things by Executive Order that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Personally, I think Bill Clinton is smart enough to know this. Either Hillary has no interest in running in 2016, or Bill has a plan to keep Barry from winning.

This could give her time to repair any damage to her reputation caused by security lapses that led to the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.

Hell will have frozen over long before enough time has passed to repair her image after what her and Obama did in Benghazi.

If Obama wins again he will be President for life. The two terms limit is racist. You can not replace him even with a cleansed with time Hillary he really will be a man-god and king. And will only be replaced by a Queen or Princess to Queen.

But when he loses in 4 years even if the “real” unemployment is at 4% and gas is under $2 it will still be a hard battle. Unless the Old Media is done and there is not walking dead everywhere.

Not necessarily. I think they’re waiting to see what happens with the Benghazi story, but if it gets dire enough, I believe we will see Hillary throw Obama under the bus and publicly reveal that she was fighting for the security they needed and was overruled by Obama. Bubba knows that the economy will not come back that strong unless Mitt has both houses and the ability to get rid of the Obama Job Killer legislation and with the eSTAB-lishment Republicans propensity for screwing over conservatives, it’s just as likely(as proved by their eating their own in Mo.), they won’t win both houses! If Obama wins the destruction of the oil & energy industries will not allow for a recovery, PERIOD! Hillary’s only chance in 2016, is a Romney win, without taking both houses!

Hillary Clinton will be 69 years old on election day of 2016, and the years have not been particularly kind to her.

Mrs Clinton had no executive experience at all in 2008, but a lot of people thought she somehow gained executive experience by osmosis from her husband. Now she does have an executive record, and it isn’t a particularly good one.

A bland record as a Senator, and a poor one as Secretary of State, compounded by being too old is not a winning combination for Mrs Clinton, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming election.

It isn’t that Chelsea has none of the advantages of her father. Its that she has all the disadvantages of her mother without even having the false perception that she’s experienced. And whoever holds the keys of power in the White House is going to get to take credit for it.

This of course assumes that Obama plans for there to be a 2016 election — a situation I seriously doubt.

Everyone in the Obama administration is/will be getting Benghazied.
Looks like it could be over for Hillary 2016. She is either part of the cover up or part of the problem…

Obama Administration Replaces Top Generals Following Benghazi Disaster

“General [Carter] Ham as head of Africom received the same e-mails the White House received requesting help/support as the attack was taking place. General Ham immediately had a rapid response unit ready and communicated to the Pentagon that he had a unit ready.

General Ham then received the order to stand down. His response was to screw it, he was going to help anyhow. Within 30 seconds to a minute after making the move to respond, his second in command apprehended General Ham and told him that he was now relieved of his command. “

I’m not so sure I would trust this story. It’s plausible, but it just sounds like the kind of story that could easily be apocryphal.

I am sure, thought, that we will find out eventually if it is true. Benghazi is too big to sweep under the rug, and Obama made a huge mistake in trying to do it.

I hate to break it to you, but a +8 Dem advantage with only 23% Republican turn out just isn’t going to happen in Virginia this year. 2004 was GOP +4, 2008 was DEM +6 and the 2009 Governor’s race was GOP +4. All years had a minimum GOP turnout of 33% of total voters.

When your boy is getting his media friends to drop D+8 polls for a state that went D+6 in ’08, it means your boy is losing. Raise your hand if you think 2012 is going to be a bigger democrat wave election than 2008 was…

Yeah. I didn’t think so.

Rational Thought on October 27, 2012 at 8:58 PM

It’s not HILLARY Clinton who they are playing for…. it’s CHELSEA.

I suspect the Clinton’s have cut a bargain with the Democratic party inner circle wherein their support buys CHELSEA a career in politics.

Democrats have never won the presidency three times in a row, with the exception of FDR. The only way Hillary has a chance in 2016 is running against an incumbent Romney.

Vashta.Nerada on October 27, 2012 at 10:05 PM

This talk about Hillary for president in 2016 is got to be a joke. By 2016, it’s going to take a lot more then a face lift and a tummy tuck to make her presentable to the electorate. It’s going to take a lot more then four years to cover up the desaster of her job as secretary of state. She has proved that she is totally inept in all she has attempted to do. Another thing she has proven, she cannot dazzle the people with brilliance, so all she has left is BS. The same goes for Slick Willie.
