Welcome to the new Green Room!

posted at 10:41 am on October 26, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Over the last couple of days, you may have noticed some changes in our Green Room, and a few readers expressed some puzzlement over suddenly seeing Allahpundit, Mary Katharine, Erika, Jazz Shaw, Guy Benson, and myself posting our thoughts in that forum.  We’ve decided to repurpose our Green Room into a Hot Air/Townhall conversation area, where your favorite bloggers — and perhaps a few of your favorite radio hosts — can post shorter-form thoughts, debate points amongst each other.

We want to thank our friends who have written in our Green Room over the last few years. They’ve done a great job, and we’ve had a blast working with them.

So what’s next?  We’ll start with the six of us while we’re building some better access to GR posts on our home page, but we’ll shortly be adding some of our Townhall colleagues, and perhaps by next week a few other Salem favorites, too. We hope to have this in full throttle by Election Night, and you can bet we’ll be posting quick updates all night long.  Be sure to keep an eye on the Green Room, because you’ll never know what — or who — to expect there!

Update (AP): In case it’s not obvious, the “More Green Room” link in the box on the Hot Air front page will take you directly to the master Green Room page. You can read everything there with one scroll, a la Instapundit. Links to individual GR posts will cycle off the HA front page quickly, so that’s the easiest way to get caught up on everything if you’re behind.

It does not appear that this move is very popular…but, hey…no one asked me.

kingsjester on October 26, 2012 at 4:52 PM

OK, I haven’t read all the comments so I apologize if AP or others said they were working on the archive issue.

I think I can individually find my articles but I can’t remember what they were all titled.

Bee on October 26, 2012 at 4:53 PM

The GR archives will be available. I e-mailed Mark to see if he’s figured out yet where they’ll be accessible on the site. He was busy with the rollout of the new format and hasn’t gotten to it. But carry on, cozmo.

Allahpundit on October 26, 2012 at 1:05 PM

Ah, ok. Sorry then, didn’t see that. Thank you.

Bee on October 26, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Comments seem to be disabled for GR articles. I could comment before but today it doesn’t even show the comment box.

Nobody asked the Green Room writers, either. Just an email saying “It’s over, dudes. Bummer. Later.”

MadisonConservative on October 26, 2012 at 5:10 PM

So…we’ve got less headlines (which are a fun highlight of the site), and a clunky GR bar in the middle of essentially the same writers, often saying the same things already posted below……..

….

Does not compute. Why? If I wanted read Town Hall (which I don’t), I’d go there. Just…weird.

Bee on October 26, 2012 at 5:19 PM

We’re working on that too. Facebook comments have become way trollier than we had hoped. I doubt they’ll be around much longer unless we can figure out a better means of troll control.

As for the autoplay ads, I’m sorry about that. We have no control over it. We use an automated ad system and sometimes ad buyers insert autoplay ads into it; our only recourse is to block the ad after it starts airing, which can take some time. I’ve already alerted the higher-ups about the Home Depot one.

Allahpundit on October 26, 2012 at 11:30 AM

Allah, just got in and catching up here on all the grief you all are catching. I have a solution for both of the issues mentioned above. FB trolls, let me handle them, no charge. Auto starts and ads, no problem, Abine. Next. ; )

Well, my observation. Seems to me though the change in aesthetics has some upset, I don’t think that is really an issue. The important part of what folks are saying is continue having Howard and J.E. etc write articles for the site. I agree, especially in the case of J.E., she brings info and perspective to the site that will otherwise be sorely lacking. On balance this may work fine but needs to be tweaked a bit, fine, to be expected. Losing the green room authors, big mistake. No comments for green room posts, big mistake. My take, worth exactly what one shareholders opinion has always been worth around here. Oh,………and……….Salem sucks!

Well, I didn’t think to make any dossiers on the bloggers here. So, I don’t know. That information would have come in handy when I was trying to get some time with Bain this morning.

Of course, I often times wonder about that concerning myself. I think I’ve PO’ed AP more times than the trolls. And AP controls the hammer.

cozmo on October 26, 2012 at 6:02 PM

Hot Air will be a tiny section of Townhall by this time next year. I thought Salem radio was gawdawful, their Internet management is worse.

wildcat72 on October 26, 2012 at 6:24 PM

The new Green Room really blows. What’s the point of being able to watch private comments of people we already read on the main page at the loss of all the alternative voices?

RW_theoriginal on October 26, 2012 at 6:44 PM

I’m already liking the new Green Room. It will be great when the comments are turned back on.

I had a comment about Meatloaf that I’ll have to save for another time.

BTW, I saw him do a concert at the House Of Blues in Dallas a couple of years ago. His voice wasn’t quite as good as it was when he was younger, but it was still enjoyable. His daughter, Pearl Aday, was the opening act. Also good.

What the hell does that even mean, you muppet? When you subscribe to ad services, the ad service company chooses the ads. If you don’t like the ads, you stop using the service. So simple that even a cretin like you should be able to understand it.

The readers and the commentators here are the product that is being sold to the advertisers. Annoy us with pop ups, crawl overs, screaming auto play audio/video, and we’ll go away.

Especially as Salem continues to water down and remove the reasons why we CAME here in the first place.

Hot Air is being De-Malkinized. It used to be a vehicle by which Malkin helped raise the stature of B and C list bloggers (and Ed and AP were B and C list at best before being brought here) and the Green Room was a way of adding more opinion (keep in mind that both Ed and AP have their RINO tendencies) and as a further opportunity to give up and coming bloggers a way to get noticed, to move up from the D list to the A list.

The change to the green room means away with the grassroots, in with the B and C list failures at Salem to get eyeballs from Hot Air’s page views.

If Salem bought this site because it wasn’t TownHall (ie: wasn’t failing) why are they now turning it INTO TownHall?

What the heck does Salem have in it’s stable that is successful? They are a company of third rate talk show hosts who broadcast on third rate talk stations.

wildcat72 on October 26, 2012 at 7:43 PM

Yeah, I’m sure Rush Limbaugh or Hannity or someone anyone has ever heard of will post on this pitiful attempt at closed Twitter.

Is there anyone ON Salem radio that anyone here listens to unless one of the Big Four (Beck, Rush, Hannity, Levin) have a substitute host? Heck, do they have anyone on their network that is even as GOOD as the pitiful subs the Big Guys get these days (because all the great substitutes are now national hosts).

Of course, I’m spoiled from the early Rush years when his subs were guys like Tony Snow and Sean Hannity…

I wasn’t arguing that the ads were good. lostmotherland is a lefty troll trying to indict capitalism by responding ignorantly to AP’s remark.

I like the ads no better than anyone else here, but HA/Salem can still choose not to take the ad service. They continue to choose to do so.

MadisonConservative on October 26, 2012 at 7:53 PM

The irony here is the main reason Michelle cited in selling Hot Air was that it had become so big it was difficult for her and her husband to manage the ad sales.

With moves like Salem has made today THAT is a problem this site isn’t going to have for a whole lot longer. If Ed and AP have any self respect whatsoever they will be looking to move on from this trainwreck ASAP or they will be tarnished with it.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Salem doesn’t already plan to replace them with yet more Salem radio/TownHall nobodies.

wildcat72 on October 26, 2012 at 7:57 PM

Meant to add: With this being the fever pitch PEAK of the most important election season of our lives, Hot Air isn’t going to feel the consequences right away. But they sure will post election…

wildcat72 on October 26, 2012 at 7:58 PM

By the way, I hope you know that this continued castration of the website will only push people to either stop visiting, or install ad-blocking software to deal with some of the most onerous ad scripts I’ve seen on any political website.

MadisonConservative on October 26, 2012 at 11:03 AM

I did this long ago. On my home PC I run Firefox with every ad blocker imaginable.

The annoyance comes from browsing on my iPhone, which, being an Apple product, wants ownership of your eyeballs and doesn’t offer much credible protection from annoying ads.

I guarantee it won’t be much longer before Hot Air has that annoying as hell floating ad bar that eats up 1/4th of the iPhone’s screen…

That is my line in the sand, once a site adds that, I quit going there.

wildcat72 on October 26, 2012 at 8:02 PM

It does not appear that this move is very popular…but, hey…no one asked me.

kingsjester on October 26, 2012 at 4:52 PM

The new Green Room is very much a harbinger of the future of Hot Air: Salem employees talking amongst themselves mainly because no one wants to talk to them.

The commentators, most of the best of which were Green Room bloggers, ARE this site. Or were.

They are why I come here. Frankly, what Ed and AP post is pure fluff compared to the comments.

wildcat72 on October 26, 2012 at 8:08 PM

The best part about this site was always its simplicity. I could always come here on my iPhone, and in a second know which articles I wanted to read. Now it looks all cluttered.

Fix #1: If you’re going to use the Green Font for the green room, you don’t need a bar telling me its the green room…it is unnecessary.

Fix #2: If the Green Room is barely going to be different than the front page then you might as well get rid of the green room, and put the content on the front page. Use 3 columns instead of 2.

Suggestion: If you guys are looking for more traffic then you should consider a book section where you guys interview conservative authors and allow them to talk about their books, then allow us to write reviews and rate the books that we have read. Since Hot Air is a controlled environment every one would know that a 2-star book probably really is not any good, and not rated low because of trolls, while a 5-star book would have earned those stars. Maybe you guys even give out ARCs to random members so they can review them early. Hey, it would add a different dimension to your website…

publius75 on October 26, 2012 at 8:59 PM

Again I proffer grouchyconservativepundits.org
No leftist / liberal talking point trolls.
No social-network comment schemes.
No ads.
A wide variety of posters and categories of interest.
A high percentage of prior service.
And the freshest news and topics that can be gleaned from various aggregators. We’ll have it before the nightly news.

rayra on October 26, 2012 at 9:16 PM

Is there some reason why the headlines are so boring? There have been about a total of 12 today. All the stories have been slow and boring- hopefully this is just part of the big move and will get better, because it was not a good day for HotAir.

BettyRuth on October 26, 2012 at 9:20 PM

rayra on October 26, 2012 at 9:16 PM

I’m not really all that grouchy. That smacks of old crustiness. I prefer snarky, sarcastic, cynical…eh, semantics.

This all makes me sad, though. I remember loving LOVING this site. Now I can’t go here without being assaulted by ads and not knowing where to direct my focus (eh hem, a lot like the slaphappy design aesthetic of Town Hall, particularly of old). And I get that we can easily head for the door if we so hate it, but part of blog success involves return visits…the bulk of which come from faithful, satisfied regulars. Wither community? Perhaps traffic is so good it matters little what older commenters think?

Basically I’m saying that I agree things have gone to absolute sh.t since the buyout. Huge mistake. But if you guys are making more money, I suppose that justifies it.

Whatever happened to all of the older commenter’s I used to enjoy reading here? This place is increasingly looking more like some social networking site instead of all the serious discussions I used to read before I joined last year.

As a new voter and citizen, you have no idea how much I have learned from some of the great writers and commenter’s here and I really hate what they did to the Green Room staff.

I haven’t written here in awhile…but I was pretty excited about getting back into it this fall now that both kids are in school and I have more time…so I’m pretty upset about this. Back when I wrote with MadCon and others it was a ton of fun and some great conversations (and drama) were had, and friends made, for sure. Before I even had GR access, I loved this site, loved Michelle and it was SUCH an honor to write for her site. That was the draw.

Town Hall/Salem and attendant ham-handedness? Not so much. I’m just….sad. At least the archives will be preserved. I’d like my link on this site to work again. :(

I was just discussing this with a friend I made here years ago and correspond with IRL as a result. We think it’s a combination of things. People move on to different interests or find a different forum. Some people were singled out, Lizard King style, by the mods here and received public scolding for transgressions that trolls got away with regularly. And every registration brought in heaps of those guys, who are to this day treated with inexplicable leniency. It’s a chore to go through threads where you have to train yourself to treat every third post as a scroll-by.

Still doing the show on BTR, although I skipped last week. Strangely enough, I’m actually shelling out for the privilege of airing my viewpoints there (although I had to cancel last week’s show at the last minute; I’m still going strong).

I’d love nothing more than for a sponsorship to pay for the cost of doing the show, but I haven’t the foggiest clue how to make it happen. Until then, I’ll plug on. I couldn’t see myself making a business out of it, especially since the last vestige of anything that ever made HotAir special is not KAPUT. Gone.

gryphon202 on October 26, 2012 at 11:59 PM

Definitely dislike the link rearrangement. The headlines are essential, GR is only for when I get really bored. Put it back please.

Can we give the new green room a chance? I like the spontaneous nature of it: One or two paragraph, spur of the moment OPs that can fly up there instead of having to be polished up meticulously for the main blog. When events are really moving fast, such as on election night, this has potential to add real value to the site.

And I’m trying to load your link but it won’t for some reason. I like that Radio Free Gryph title, reminds me of my former life when our lives revolved around Radio Free Europe.

If by “value,” you mean the kind of metrics that the corporate offices like, then yes, there is a good chance that the changes here will add value. Unfortunately, they will cause (and are causing) my personal participation rate here to plummet. So be it. Viva capitalism.

I think the addition to the front page is unwieldy/clunky…regrettable that the headlines have been chopped. So, no I wont read the new GR stuff…not even remotely interested in additional chatter by the same people from the front page, but have at it if you want!

No promises. If you mean stick around here at HotAir, I have other better blogs on my blogroll now. If you’d like, I can give you other ways to keep in touch with me. To make a long story short, I just don’t comment here as much anymore cause I just don’t feel like it.

I’m looking at your radio page right now. Shall I catch you there?

I don’t comment as much as I lurk, but I hadn’t seen you in awhile so I wondered.

Bee on October 27, 2012 at 12:37 AM

Bee, it doesn’t necessarily have to be one site or the other. The Internet is a buffet. The political blogosphere doubly so. It’s the nature of web forums to grow mutate and split over time. Even more so when the site management is inconsistent. Most of the folks at GCP have been logging together at various sites for 8-9 years. And at many other places. The place I sort of like our parlor. Many of us run sites of our own, large and small. GCP is as much touchstone and refuge as anything else. Govt dissemblers / apologists, lib trolls, barracks lawyers get impaled in short order at GCP. When we want or are willing to put up with such nonsense weblog in other places.
So give it a try, or use it as a refuge too. There’s no burden to it.

Or Email me at gryph202@yahoo.com

I’ve made some good friends here at HotAir. I figure if the friendships mean enough to myself and others, I shouldn’t have to be at HotAir simply to maintain those friendships.

Too bad, so sad.

Kinda funny that the exact time I determine to get back into writing and commenting here after some serious personal sh.t I was dealing with, everything changes…no chance to write anymore, people I cared about are gone in my life and site-buddies act like I’m not even here. *sigh* C’est la vie I suppose. :)

I just learned about the changes made to The Green Room when I checked my email tonight (I’ve been busy lately). First of all, I would like to extend my heart-felt thanks to Ed and Allah for allowing me the honor of posting in The Green Room during the last couple of years–it has truly been an awesome experience. Furthermore, I would like to thank all of my regular readers/commenters (who left so many well thought out, insightful comments in the comments section of my posts), as well my fellow Greenroom writers for their intellectually stimulating columns that contained fantastic political insights. I will miss all of you greatly. This is a melancholy moment for me as I bid you all a fond farewell; however, I will be sure to pop around from time to time to post my two cents in the comment threads. Writing for The Green Room has been such a privileged. Take care all of you, and I wish you all the best. :-)

Sincerely, Susannah Fleetwood

Like others, I will be looking for a new home for politics.

Along with hiring attractive young women repeatedly over much better writers, this is the kind of thing that puts me off hotair. I don’t know how reducing the number of writers broadens your appeal, I can’t imagine you were paying them much, if anything. Funny how the green room posts were always relegated to the sidebar, but now that “main” writers are using the name, it’s in the center column right under the headlines.

I thought you had demoted MKH to the green room, but instead you’ve once again put a pretty face over superior writing and given her even more room to display her mediocrity.

Even kos knows a community of writers is better than focusing on a few “stars”.

babygiraffe on October 27, 2012 at 10:07 AM

I woke up this morning hoping all of this was a bad dream, but no such luck. I lurked for years before the heavens aligned and I happened to catch an open registration in Feb 2009. It was almost like a Willie Wonka ticket. Almost, with no chocolate though.

I came here for the headlines (all 10 of them!!!) and blogs and I don’t see any value in what are essentially big tweets in the non-Green Room. All we can do is vote with our feet and for me, it’s just the not the same anymore.

TxAnn56 on October 27, 2012 at 10:20 AM

Now I get it. I have blogged at Townhall for years…before Obama even. However, in the past couple of months or so, I began having troubling with the blog…and because getting any kind of response from Townhall is almost impossible…I tried to deal with it by myself. Then just 10 days or so ago, after finally getting a response from Townhall, I’m told they are not “supporting” blogs anymore. When I asked why and if mine was the only targeted one I got no answer. That Townhall stopping supporting blogs is not a problem…but, not to give the blogger time to decide which was best: downloading posts or just walking away.
This is what kills me about companies..I know they are business to make a profit…but did Townhall get sold to the same company that bought Hot Air? They didn’t treat their people well, they were demeaning and dismissive. I resent that their ads for subscriptions pop up blank out something I am trying to read. So, good luck HotAir with your Green Room….hopefully it will not be thrown out in the trash!!!

#1 The vast majority of terrestrial radio quite frankly sucks. A few talented exceptions exist and they pay all the bills for the rest.

#2 Putting terrestrial radio folks that have already tanked one business model in charge of new media and website management one should not expect different results from #1.

#3 I guess we can start hanging out at places that actually appreciate their community rather than installing rigid top-down management that shuts the community out of format decisions. HA’s long slow slide into mediocrity just accelerated a bit.

Difficultas_Est_Imperium on October 27, 2012 at 11:16 AM

Just noticed that the headlines were bumped up from six to eight — check! Do I hear ten?

Comments on in the new Hot Air Corner — check.

Still need to restore the original Green Room, and name the new Corner something else … likely not going to happen.

Again, I invite anyone who wants community to visit the “It’s About Liberty” conservative forum. We welcome everyone (with the exception of lefty trolls) to post (or cross post) blogs, lurk, or participate any way you like.

There are no tone police to contend with and the attitude is total freedom of expression.

Most of the IAL members are refugees from the long defunct Powerline blog forum. We would not submit to their “real name” requirement.

Check us out by clicking my name. Thanks.

trapeze on October 27, 2012 at 2:54 PM

Ah yes. So much for conservatism, “liberty” and all those meaningless phrases you all throw around here on a daily basis. ‘Corporate’ it is.

Headlines 6—>8 = better balanced. Thank you for that, powers that be.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm,interesting!!!!

canopfor on October 27, 2012 at 10:23 PM

I don’t like it.

I’ll even go so far as to say I hate that the number of headlines is reduced so far down.
For those of us who have busy job and family lives, the ability to scan a larger number of headlines to see what we were really interested in reading further, was priceless.

Having the green room on the right, also for a quick scan to decide whether to drill in deeper or not, was just as priceless.

The current format requires an extra click that…although just one click…also represents the decision whether to spend precious time of having to drill down for either section to see a longer list, versus doing something else. Previously, an enticing headline would “invite me in” or compel me, to stay and read longer.

The new front page format reduces this reader’s interest in staying around and drilling deeper, since there are fewer enticing headlines to see at first view. I find myself much more prone to take one look at the front page, and then leave for another site altogether…even though the content hasn’t changed. Yes, the front page format has that strong a psychological impact on my own behavior regarding the site…even though intellectually I understand not that much has changed.

Can you PLEASE go back to the previous format?

Yiwen on October 28, 2012 at 8:40 AM

I think you should change the name of the green room if you are going to have regulars posting there. Green=Rookie and I don’t think you can really call regular bloggers rookies. How about “The Red Room” or maybe “Hot Air’s Town Hall” or something like that?
