Revenge of the Register?

posted at 9:21 am on October 25, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

After yesterday’s tussle with the White House about whether the Des Moines Register could actually tell people what Barack Obama said in an interview with them to get the editorial board’s endorsement, Obama finally relented and allowed Iowa’s leading newspaper to print a transcript of the interview.  The editors assured readers that they would not hold Obama’s pettiness against him when it came to deciding on the endorsement, as too much is at stake in this election.  However, today’s front page certainly looks like a little payback for Obama’s unprecedented demand for “privacy” — and a pretty good hint at which way the DMR is leaning on that endorsement (via Byron York):

This is hardly a subtle message.  The headlines contrast the negative campaigning from Obama with the positive, agenda-focused campaigning from Romney.  They have Obama scowling and looking over his shoulder, while Romney smiles and looks forward.  Obama is also positioned lower in the photos than Romney. Plus, even the crowd reactions are a contrast; hardly anyone around Obama is smiling, while the crowd is reaching toward Romney, showing enthusiasm and support.  The only thing missing here is a MSM-style halo around Romney’s head instead of Obama’s, and a classic Obama finger point to go with the scowl.

To be fair, if a major newspaper did this to Romney rather than Obama, we’d be screaming bloody bias — and that would be true, but only if one ignores the context of the back story this week.  This isn’t bias so much as payback.

Payback works for me.

2 years ago today: “If Latinos sit out the election instead of saying, ‘We’re going to punish our enemies and we’re going to reward our friends ….’… then I think it’s going to be harder to [pass an amnesty bill for illegal immigrants].–Barack Obama, Univision radio interview, October 25, 2010.

Nothing says “hope” and “change” quite like the President calling Americans who disagree with him “enemies” who should be punished.

The Register hasn’t published their 2012 endorsement yet. It will be in this Sunday’s paper and available online Saturday evening. (They did endorse Obama in 2008 and have not endorsed a Republican for president in quite a while.)

This may be a little bone to conservatives, and their readers, but it is really a way for the self congratulatory Des Moines Register to try to save a little face when they do endorse the Lyin kING.

If you love America and subscribe to this rag discontinue your subscription the minute they endorse. The only way to beat the thugs is to hit em where it hurts them the most, in their pocketbooks like they are us!

Carnac on October 25, 2012 at 11:44 AM

The notion that a paper can release a supposed off-the-record interview at a later time is full of mischief. Imagine the possibilities. They can release a fake prior interview to get someone out of all kinds of trouble. A president could write a wish-list of things he should have said way back when and have a friendly newspaper release the fantasy interview when needed.

Buddahpundit on October 25, 2012 at 11:49 AM

O’Reilly is convince the DMR will still endorse the Won.

natasha333 on October 25, 2012 at 11:00 AM

As am I, DMR has been consistently Liberal for at least the last 30 years, if not longer. They may get their little dig in with the front page today assuring their readers they will not be biased, knowing they are going to endorse Obama.

IowaWoman on October 25, 2012 at 11:57 AM

Didn’t 0 decide upon a telephone interview with the paper? Could it be because he wanted his teleprompter for initial statement plus aides to help on the answers? Though their help isn’t always beneficial.

Oleta on October 25, 2012 at 11:58 AM

BTW, I have to point out the obvious. Obama’s crowd in that photo is all minorities and young white people. Which does not bode well for his electoral prospects.

Doughboy on October 25, 2012 at 9:30 AM

Illegal aliens too. The voter turnout in the illegal alien demographic is around 20-30%, my estimate. Every law we pass for voter ID and cleaning the voter rolls cuts into that. The illegal alien vote will be down from 2008, although what really matters is what it is in the swing states.

IowaWoman on October 25, 2012 at 12:00 PM

Des Moines Register Editor Rick Green:
“What the President shared with us this morning — and the manner, depth and quality of his presentation – would have been well-received by not only his base, but also undecideds. From a voter standpoint, keeping it off-the-record was a disservice.”

In other words, “Please let us print this … it will HELP the President carry Iowa”.

The forthcoming prediction is easy to forecast.

gengwall on October 25, 2012 at 12:23 PM

I am actually disappointed in the DM Register for what it did.

If you agree to an off-the-record conversation, it should be off the record. You don’t agree to the terms of the deal and then whine about the deal you made.

That said, I don’t think the paper should have made the deal! That self-serving nonsense about how when the president calls you take the call is just that, nonsense. The editors should have had the fortitude (ha! I’m from Illinois — channeling Blago with “the testicular fortitude!”) to say, “we won’t do the interview unless it’s on the record.”

lizzieillinois on October 25, 2012 at 9:28 AM

This is how I understand the situation.

The paper asked both campaigns for an interview, probably to appear fair and balanced in their endorsement considerations.

Romney freely granted it and Obama said no time for that.

Then, because Iowa is now “in play” according to the polls, Obama’s campaign probably advised him to give the interview to ensure the paper’s endorsement.

Obama, in his arrogance and conceit most likely felt that all he needed to do was make the call and they would fall all over themselves. Why did he insist it be off the record? It’s par for the course for him. He has not held a press conference or done a serious news interview and he especially doesn’t want what happened at Univision to happen again. Obama wanted a conversation to buck up their support, not a newsy interview.

So, he calls the paper and quite rightly, the reporter took that call and agreed to it being off the record. It’s the president of the US in the midst of a heated campaign.

The paper then prepares to print their interview with Romney. How do they explain that they are not printing an opposing one with Obama? Would people think they didn’t interview Obama? To cover their hides, they did what they did, saying that they interviewed Obama but it was off the record and they couldn’t print.

Nothing nefarious here except on the president’s part. Think of it like a newscast that does a story and only one side agrees to appear on camera. The network says, we invited so and so to be on but they refused, or we spoke with so and so but they declined to be on camera.

That said. The front page rocks. I want to send away for one just to have it for a keepsake.

Buttercup on October 25, 2012 at 12:58 PM

The thing I love is it’s not just the candidates. Even the Romney crowd looks happier and more energized.

Which leads me to my daily public service announcement. We’re 12 days out. A lot can happen in 12 days. We’re tied going into the 2-minute warning, and we have the ball. We can either carry this team over the goal line and to victory. Or, we can cough the ball up, and give Team Liar another chance.

Our captain, Mitt Romney, is, I think most of us agree, doing everything we asked of him as leader of this party, and more. He is raising money, better than any of us had hoped. He’s hitting the stump full force. He bested the Lightworker in the debates. None of our preferred candidates would be in this position. Not. Even. Close.

So, let me suggest that you take today to thank Mitt Romney for his leadership of this party. Now, much like Arnold Rothstein, I do believe that nothing quite says “Thank You” like money. And if you are so inclined, I’m sure the Romney/Ryan campaign would be glad to have you make a small donation (or even a large donation).

Of course, even Arnold Rothstein knew that sometimes, money is tight. So, if you find yourself in a state of frugality, let me assure you there are other ways you can say “Thanks” to the Massachusetts Mormon Machine. You could go down to GOP HQ today… right now if you’re on the East Coast… and ask them what you might do today to help ensure victory. I bet you’ll find they are super nice folks, who have any number of tasks you could do to help Gov Romney. Most likely, they’ll ask you to make phone calls for a couple of hours. An hour of volunteer phone calls is worth at least $20 bucks to the campaign.

And, if you ask nicely, they’ll probably give you snacks for your effort. Actually, you probably won’t even have to ask. They know the difference between a hungry army and a sated army…

First, the Register got themselves some national interest in their pending endorsement

Rush is discussing this newspaper right now

Looks like Obama was tweaked to a low yellow tone. His hair had already acquired a pretty good grey haze just in time for the debates, and the grey is highlighted in the Register. (reminds me of Clinton’s varying shades of grey). Seemed to me Obama was made up to appear more haggard for the debates, and Obama has access to the worlds best makeup artists. IMHO the WH wants Obama to have a suffering look

The net appearance is Obama under seige, Romney rising

O’Reilly had the chick on who did the interview with Obama. She confessed that the paper is liberal and that they would endorse Obama. She did say that Obama insisted the interview be “off the record” which she thought was strange.

Heh, probably getting worried about sales. This schtick will sell a few, but it could backfire. Although, if they are sinking in sales it may not matter. Wont hold my breath on this one because there is a layer of honesty missing in the reporting
