Senate Intel vice chair: We’ve been demanding these e-mails since the Benghazi attack

posted at 12:01 pm on October 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

If the scoop from Reuters last night surprised Americans with the knowledge that the intel community knew that the Benghazi attack was not a spontaneous demonstration that spun out of control, no one was more surprised than Senate Intelligence Committee vice chair Saxby Chambliss.  His committee has been requesting those e-mails for weeks, and Chambliss to Fox and Friends that the information in them shows why they demanded them in the first place.

“At the very least,” Brian Kilmeade asks, “this shows a massive disconnect [between the intel community and the administration], doesn’t it?”  “No question,” Chambliss answers, but he’s more concerned about how the White House handled the issue.  “We got pushback, both  from the White House and the intelligence community, early on.  We couldn’t figure it out.  I mean, that was really strange — because they never do that.”  Chambliss now wants hearings in the Senate to pursue why these e-mails, and perhaps other intel, have been held back from Congress:

This points to a few possible conclusions.  Either the White House and the intel community kept Congress out of the loop because they didn’t want to admit that terrorists had successfully attacked an American diplomatic mission for the first time in fourteen years, or because they didn’t know themselves what the data meant.  Neither is particularly commendatory, although the latter looks a lot less dishonest.  Nevertheless, despite having this detailed description of the attack and the fairly credible claim of credit for the attack from a leading terrorist network in the immediate area within two hours of the start of the attack, the White House chose to repeatedly claim that they had “no evidence” that the sacking was a planned terrorist attack for most of the next two weeks.  That looks a lot more dishonest with every revelation that comes out in this issue.

That leaves the questions of the provenance of the revelations themselves.  If the intel community was reticent about discussing what it knew and when it knew it, at least someone in that group wants the real story to come out.  Those e-mails didn’t get leaked by anyone who was in the Situation Room that night and received them, certainly.

Update: Dave Weigel pushes back against the assumption that the Obama administration argued that they had “no evidence of terrorist attack”:

In the same story that breaks the news and gives readers the e-mails, CBS News prints an unaired answer that Obama gave Steve Kroft on September 12. It was his first interview after the attacks.

You’re right that this is not a situation that was — exactly the same as what happened in Egypt and my suspicion is that there are folks involved in this who were looking to target Americans from the start.

The next day, Obama was in Colorado, where he addressed the killings in Libya.

A couple of days ago, for four Americans were killed in an attack on our diplomatic post in Libya… So what I want all of you to know is that we are going to bring those who killed our fellow Americans to justice. I want people around the world to hear me: To all those who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished.

Obama didn’t pretend that this was merely “a protest that got out of hand.” The trouble, when we look back at the timeline, is that reporters didn’t really glom onto the Libya story for a few days. When they did, by the Sunday shows and September 19, you had administration spokespeople soft-peddling the “target Americans from the start” story.

However, by the time we get to Sunday, September 16th, we have Susan Rice saying this, which has been proven categorically false:

… But based on the best information we have to date, what our assessment is as of the present is in fact what began spontaneously in Benghazi as a reaction to what had transpired some hours earlier in Cairo where, of course, as you know, there was a violent protest outside of our embassy–

BOB SCHIEFFER: Mm-Hm.

SUSAN RICE: –sparked by this hateful video. But soon after that spontaneous protest began outside of our consulate in Benghazi, we believe that it looks like extremist elements, individuals, joined in that– in that effort with heavy weapons of the sort that are, unfortunately, readily now available in Libya post-revolution. And that it spun from there into something much, much more violent.

And this:

But our current best assessment, based on the information that we have at present, is that, in fact, what this began as, it was a spontaneous — not a premeditated — response to what had transpired in Cairo.

And Jay Carney saying this two days later at a White House press briefing, emphasis mine:

MR. CARNEY: No, I’m saying that based on information that we — our initial information, and that includes all information — we saw no evidence to back up claims by others that this was a preplanned or premeditated attack; that we saw evidence that it was sparked by the reaction to this video. And that is what we know thus far based on the evidence, concrete evidence — not supposition — concrete evidence that we have thus far. But there is a lot that is under investigation here, and as more facts come to light, if they change that assessment, we’ll make that clear. But there’s an active investigation for a reason — so that we actually get the facts and don’t base our policy prescriptions on suppositions about what we think we know happened as opposed to what actually happened.

Q Would the administration still say that it was spontaneous?

MR. CARNEY: Based on the information that we have now, it was — there was a reaction to the video — there was protests in Cairo, then followed by protests elsewhere, including Benghazi, and that that was what led to the original unrest. The other factors here — all factors — but the other factors here, including participants in the unrest, participants in the violence, are under investigation. And the goal of that investigation is both to find out what happened and why, but also to track down and bring to justice those who killed four Americans. And we’re working with our Libyan counterparts to ensure that that happens, as the President committed it would.

Bear in mind that since this time, we have discovered that the State Department watched this unfold in real time and has video of the attack which is still hasn’t shared with Congress. The CIA station chief told them in a cable 24 hours later that this was a terrorist attack, and that they even knew who had commanded it. Finally, we have last night’s revelation that the Situation Room got e-mails from the intel community while the attack was underway that clearly gave evidence that this was no spontaneous demonstration gone amok. They had plenty of evidence — “concrete evidence,” to use Jay Carney’s terminology — that the sacking of the consulate and assassination of our Ambassador was a planned terrorist attack.

Resist We Much on October 24, 2012 at 12:07 PM

The sad thing is, this episode has demonstrated that the people giving briefings to the President are tailoring those briefings to comply with the Party Line. If the President says it is the video, within a couple of days, the President’s Daily Briefing drops all of this terrorism nonsense, and starts talking about the video. They are just giving the President what he wants to hear.

The problem with this is that the President uses these briefings to craft policy. If the Democrat Talking Point of the Day determines what is in the daily brief, our policy will be based on incorrect information.

In engineering, this is called a feedback loop. Errors in action create errors in measurement, which create larger errors in action and larger errors in measurement, until eventually the operation of the system is too divorced from reality, and the whole machine breaks down.

This is a failure of leadership. The President should insist on the unvarnished truth, as near as his intelligence people can determine. He should make a big show of firing people who keep telling him what he wants to hear until he is confident everybody is doing his job.

But this President just rewards people who tell him what he wants to hear and who can reliably parrot his own words back to him.

I agree, but I think I know what he is doing:

1. Obama doesn’t release. He’s turning down $5 million to a charity. Why? Then, Trump, et al, ask “What’s he hiding?”

2. Trump knows what is in the transcripts and there is something that will harm Obama. Grades? Attended as a foreign student? Got student aid as a foreign student, which would be a crime?

I still think that it is a big nothingburger or will, at least, be spun that way, but I can see what Trump is doing.

Either the White House and the intel community kept Congress out of the loop because they didn’t want to admit that terrorists had successfully attacked an American diplomatic mission for the first time in fourteen years, or because they didn’t know themselves what the data meant.

Sorry, but those are NOT the only possibilities.

It is also possible that the Intelligence community and the White House were complicit in the attack on the embassy.

It is also possible that the Intelligence community and the White House were dupped by the terrorists into thinking the attack would not go as far as it did.

It is also possible that the intelligence was suppressed because the White House knew that as bad as the PR hit they were about to take would be, it was better than what they’d suffer if something in that intelligence were to be made known.

One lesson we should all learn about the intelligence community is that almost nothing happens for no reason. What they have done in this case is to had the media buzzing about the two versions of the story, i.e. was it the video or a terrorist attack, while in the meantime little is being said about why the mission there was left so vulnerable to begin with. That’s why Obama refused, actually refused, to answer the question in the 2nd debate about “who made the decision to leave the mission defenseless and why?” The answer to that question has to be worse than the fallout from not answering it?

True. Little Bammie has not been honest with us about the nature of the terrorist mission. In Africa when you want to take out a location like the one in Benghazi, a truck bomb is the usual method. There’s no shortage of explosives in Lybia to make use of. Why a high-risk manned attack where you are certain to lose many of your own people?

The government also let it leak out that the loss of the consulate was “a massive loss of intelligence”. No further explanation on that. Was there something in the consulate that the terrorists wanted, besides the ambassador?

So many lies, so little time.

slickwillie2001 on October 24, 2012 at 12:32 PM

I find the release of these e-mails fascinating. The list of suspected leakers is long because the White House threw nearly everyone under the bus during the days and weeks following this disaster. Both Romney and Ryan baited their opponents in the debates, giving them just enough rope to hang themselves on this issue before backing off. It appears to me that R & R knew about these documents well before last night. And, this I think this revelation kinda robs Obama of the chance to wag the dog and randomly bomb Libyan targets in retaliation for these attacks. Someone in Washington is actively working against Obama on this matter. State? Pentagon? CIA? This is what a government in chaos looks like….

Yes, those are probably funneled from Libya through Turkey and then into Syria…..
This is what Stevens was doing – he was talking with Turkey right before being attacked….
I am sure Syria put the hit on Stevens and Obama did nothing because he did
not want any evidence left…..

This is one of the most callous people on Earth. He will try to move heaven and earth to be re-elected. It won’t work but you will see the creepiest person on Earth in action in the next two weeks.

Schadenfreude on October 24, 2012 at 12:27 PM

Obama knew what had happened from the beginning as did Hillary Clinton, Susan Rice, and Jay Carney. They all lied. They talked of brave Libyans rushing Ambassador Stevens to the hospital. They talked with disgust about a video that had been out for months causing the unrest. Most importantly, they jailed the producer of that video to appease CAIR and the Muslim animals that killed our ambassador.

This alone should be reason enough for the rat-eared wonder to lose in a landslide.

Yes. Likely shipped from Lybia to Syria on the ship that Fox News tracked down which followed that path in the Med. One of the ambassador’s missions was to track those down because we screwed up and put them into the hands of al Qaeda, not Syrian rebels as we naively believed.

I don’t know, that sounds a tad far-fetched. A hostage ambassador and release of a terrorist would be as much a political embarrassment as what happened.

Happy Nomad on October 24, 2012 at 12:30 PM

Not as far fetched as you want to believe, yes the Obama administration really is that mendacious.

The Blind Sheikh, The Blaze, and the dhimmi White House

Former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy, who was the lead prosecutor in the Blind Sheikh case, told TheBlaze that he does not doubt the accuracy of the report, saying “there are very good reasons as to why it could be true.”

McCarthy explained that Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has been calling for the release of the Blind Sheikh ever since he was elected earlier this year. He said it is a matter of “great importance” to the radical Islamists in Egypt and throughout the Middle East, adding that his transfer to Egypt would undoubtedly lead to the terrorist’s release.

“I think the plan has been to agree to the Blind Sheikh’s release, but not to announce it or have it become public until after the election. That is consistent with Obama’s pattern of trying to mollify Islamists,” he explained. “Obviously, they did not want this information to surface yet… but sometimes a situation can spin out of control.”

McCarthy also said the way the Department of Justice worded its denial may prove to be significant. The DOJ said Rahman’s “release” was not being considered, however, the question was whether or not his “transfer” to Egypt was being discussed.

ToddPA on October 24, 2012 at 12:35 PM

That’s why Obama refused, actually refused, to answer the question in the 2nd debate about “who made the decision to leave the mission defenseless and why?” The answer to that question has to be worse than the fallout from not answering it?

MikeA on October 24, 2012 at 12:29 PM

Dollar to donut says probably the decision was recommended by an advisor and Obama approved it. My bet is the reasoning was that better those four die than the gun-running mission and radicalization of the ME be exposed before the election.

petefrt on October 24, 2012 at 12:35 PM

What bothers me is that there are so many people, both appointed and career, who knew what the truth was and which way the Administration was playing and spinning it, yet no one resigned in protest.

Yeah, I’m looking at you, Panetta and Patraeus, as topping that list. Skipping past the possibility that decisive assessment and action might have saved the four people who died that day, the public should not be 40 days in for finding out the White House has been lying to us all this time.

Dusty on October 24, 2012 at 12:38 PM

Fast & Furious in Lybia…

“The evidence suggests that the Obama administration has not simply been engaging, legitimating, enriching and emboldening Islamists who have taken over or are ascendant in much of the Middle East. Starting in March 2011, when American diplomat J. Christopher Stevens was designated the liaison to the “opposition” in Libya, the Obama administration has been arming them, including jihadists like Abdelhakim Belhadj, leader of the al Qaeda franchise known as the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group.

Once Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown, Stevens was appointed ambassador to the new Libya run by Mr. Belhadj and his friends. Not surprisingly, one of the most important priorities for someone in that position would be to try to find and secure the immense amount of armaments that had been cached by the dictator around the country and systematically looted during and after the revolution.

One of the places in Libya most awash with such weapons in the most dangerous of hands is Benghazi. It now appears that Stevens was there — on a particularly risky day, with no security to speak of and despite now copiously documented concerns about his own safety and that of his subordinates — for another priority mission: sending arms recovered from the former regime’s stocks to the “opposition” in Syria…”

Syrian Rebels Armed With US-Made Stinger Missiles: Russia

Russia’s defense chief said there’s growing evidence that show Syrian rebels now have US- manufactured shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles known as MANPAD’s in their arsenal.

Armed Forces Chief of Staff of Russia, General Nikolay Makarov, said on Wednesday, ‘The Russian General Staff has information that the militants fighting against Syrian government forces have MANPADs produced in various countries, including US-made ‘Stingers.’

According to Makarov, Washington denied supply of such missiles to the insurgents in Syria. The Russian General demanded an investigation over how these missiles were delivered into Syria for use against Bashar-al-Assad government.

Steven was having dinner with Turkeys General Counsel evening of the attack. The first person Obama called when he became president was Turkey Prime Minister/Muslim Brotherhood, also after attack in Bengazi, who is also considered “head of califate.” Obama and Hillary are funneling guns and arming our enemies!

I’m afraid it is worse than that. Patraeus actually lied about what the CIA’s actions were to put the administration in the best possible light. Former military officers used to have some level of integrity but Patraeus clearly has none. He is a disgrace and Panetta isn’t much better.

The Benghazi Emails, and Some Speculation on What It All means [UPDATE]

The latest line that Ambassador Rice was reading talking points prepared by the CIA seems very odd–but then in a bureaucratic sense, the role of Ambassador Rice makes no sense. As I have written long ago, Rice is not in the chain of command of anything to do with Libya or the Middle East; she is a political hack; she does not report to the Secretary. Why she was sent out to do the p.r. blitz, therefore, is a bureaucratic mystery, but not a political one. Rice undoubtedly was considered more loyal and, of course, more of an Obama groupie that Hillary Clinton, the person we would have expected to see on the talk shows….

I have never heard of the CIA preparing talking points for personnel at State or USUN. CIA might go over some points in the clearance process to ensure that nothing classified or grotesquely inaccurate is said, but they would not draft them. . . . All this is very easy to solve: Congress should ask to see Rice’s briefing materials, including the actual UNCLASSIFIED talking points sheet. All those papers will contain the names and offices of the drafters, the clearers, and the authorizers. It ain’t rocket science.

This whole mess at Benghazi and all the subsequent cover ups make me think it WAS a set up for Obama to bomb the “bad guys” in late October, but it all went terribly wrong and the administration had that video excuse in their back pocket the whole time as a stand by scapegoat. It’s so ugly and I pray that every bit of it gets PUBLICLY exposed.

I don’t believe that for a second. Much as I realize that both Panetta and Patraeus are likely to fail in making the right decisions in the gray area of politics, ie, serving the president) vs honesty with the public, there is no way they’d be knowingly involved in what you are alluding to, and there is no way they would not know about what you are alluding to.
