Hillary on Benghazi: Just because a jihadist group claims credit doesn’t make it so; Update: Attackers tied to Al Qaeda in Iraq?

posted at 10:09 pm on October 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

“Posting something on Facebook is not in and of itself evidence,” she says, responding to last night’s e-mail leak about Ansar al-Sharia taking credit for the attack. True enough, but that’s not the only link to AAS. As I reminded you yesterday, intercepts caught members of the group talking to members of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb during and after the attack. Libyan eyewitnesses saw the group’s founder outside the consulate while it was happening; he later admitted to having been there while insisting that he was merely directing traffic. There’s plenty of reason beyond the early claim of responsibility on Facebook to think they were involved, but to watch Hillary here, you’d think the Ansar al-Sharia mention in yesterday’s Reuters bombshell was some sort of false lead based on dubious preliminary intel that had evaporated later as the fog cleared.

Which brings me to a larger point. What’s the White House’s current position on whether the attack was inspired by the Mohammed movie? Are they seriously claiming that a hardened Islamist outfit with AQ links like Ansar al-Sharia wouldn’t have come after the American consulate if not for the provocation from the movie? Or are they claiming that AAS chose to capitalize on the outrage over the movie after news trickled out about the Cairo embassy assault earlier that day? I ask because we’re still seeing stuff like the following being pushed by the Times, weeks after the White House formally embraced the “terrorist attack” narrative:

Beyond the political issues, the [new Bin Laden] film may carry the risk of associating Mr. Obama with any backlash in a Muslim world already inflamed by the YouTube trailer for an insulting film portrayal of its prophet. In September riots erupted in Libya, Egypt and elsewhere as Muslim crowds reacted violently to what they perceived as the unforgivable insults of a scratch production, “The Innocence of Muslims,” some of which was posted on YouTube.

As recently as six days ago, State was still grasping for ways to blame the movie, which may be the one consistent thread in this entire mess. From the beginning, in the same Rose Garden remarks on September 12 in which he mentioned “acts of terror,” Obama alluded to the video’s role by saying, “We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others.” If they’re sticking with the “offended terrorist” theory of the case even now, I’d like to hear more. That must have been some video to push a group like Ansar al-Sharia from grudging tolerance of the Great Satan’s local presence to “let’s kill the ambassador” rage.

Exit quotation from Mike Rogers: “It’s about the fact that decisions were made, big policy decisions, including elevating the video that, if you listen to those email or read those emails, nothing about the video — it elevated the video and actually caused more protests across the Middle East.” Click the image to watch.

Update: Whole lotta offended terrorists in Benghazi that night, for some reason:

U.S. intelligence believes that assailants connected to al Qaeda in Iraq were among the core group that attacked the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, a U.S. government official told CNN.

That would represent the second al Qaeda affiliate associated with the deadly September 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Previously, intelligence officials said there were signs of connections to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African wing of the terror group…

According to the official, others in the core group are suspected of having ties to the Libyan group Ansar al-Sharia, and many of them are believed to be Egyptian jihadis.

That’s three separate jihadist outfits participating. According to CNN, there were upwards of 40 attackers in the first wave. Free question for any members of the White House press corps who are reading: What’s Al Qaeda in Iraq doing in Libya?

Lourdes on October 24, 2012 at 10:29 PM

The administration is trying claim that there was tons of conflicting information initially that clouded what happened. However, there wasn’t a protest, the people in the compound didn’t think there was a protest, and all of the survivors were back in Washington DC the next day. There is no way that they were getting lots of intelligence claiming that there was a protest, and any confusion would have been cleared up within 48 hours since the survivors were all available to explain what happened.

The only “confusion” was the result of the administration not getting its talking points straight.

My screen went red too, but that’s not why I’m commenting. On Sept. 12 when the Hillster came out with her statement, I commented to several people that she didn’t believe a word of what she was saying [The Libyians are great friends of ours, yak, yak,; they tried to carry Amb. Stevens to the hospital, (yeah, sure), this was an unfortunate response to a nasty video (yadda, yadda.)] Listen to this schpeel…the woman is talking in an absolutely robotic monotone…she didn’t believe a Word of what she was saying. I believe, as both Rush and Glenn have said, she has covered her tracks very well, and will come out smelling like a rose. B.O. is going DOWN over this, no ifs, ands or um (given this evening’s comments), “Butts.”

:: Agreeing with Bishop :: That’s what I thought on Day 2 after Benghazi. Obama/Hillary were VERY SURE “it was a video” and “it was a riot” (by lone Unruly’s)…but they couldn’t substantiate that other than their ongoing declarations of being VERY SURE of that.

If they were VERY SURE of that as they claimed (for ten whole days afterward), then why were they so determined they were UTTERLY UNABLE TO DETERMINE anything else?

Just because Clinton and Obama say it was caused by a youtube video doesn’t make it so either.

And besides the fact that they are a$$hats who lied to Americans,
my real concern is for the four that died and other military who
are fighting for our freedom. They can’t count on the CIC,
Sec. of Defense, Sec. of State, State Department, CIA, or anyone
when they are in trouble.

This would be like thugs invading my home. I call 911 and the
police decide not to send anyone; they decide to monitor the
activity from the cameras on the lightpost down the street.
My family and I hold off our attackers for 6-7 hours, then die.

When I complain about this in a HotAir forum online, some idiots
try and tell me that the police didn’t have the right type of police cars, it would take too long to get the police locked and loaded, get their gear in their cars, and
they were on the other side of town and couldn’t get here, etc.
etc.

LIBYA
E-mails from Operations Center
Accountability Review Board / Ongoing Investigation into Benghazi
(More…..)
============

QUESTION: Well, let’s just start with something that she did say, which was about these emails that have been – that are being reported on now. Do you have anything to add to what she said about them? And can you explain – these were emails sent by this building to various other agencies, including the White House. Do you know, was it people in this building who noticed the claim of responsibility on Facebook and Twitter, or was it people in Tripoli or somewhere else?

MS. NULAND: Well, first of all, in terms of where this piece fits into the general effort to gather information before, during, and after the events in Benghazi, I think the Secretary’s spoken to that, Jay Carney’s spoken to that. The reason you have an ARB is so that you can look at all of the information that we had, not only unclassified information and information –

QUESTION: Fair enough, but I –

MS. NULAND: — that appeared on Facebook.

QUESTION: But considering these things are now out there, can you –

MS. NULAND: So just to give some context, as you know, our Operations Center is responsible for providing fast-breaking news to principals in this Department. We obviously share with other national security agencies. So on the unclassified side, they will collect information that they are seeing in real time, whether it’s from Facebook, Twitter, press reporting, all of your fine work, that kind of thing, and make sure that people see it if it’s a breaking story. So what –

QUESTION: Sorry. So it was the Ops Center specifically that noticed this claim of responsibility?

MS. NULAND: I think the –

QUESTION: Or was it the Crisis – the Rapid Response Team or – I’m just looking for – or was it someone out in the field?

MS. NULAND: That particular piece was disseminated –

QUESTION: I know where it was disseminated from.

MS. NULAND: — by our Operations Center. Whether it was –

QUESTION: Where did they get it from?

MS. NULAND: Whether they saw it themselves or whether it was highlighted by our people in the field, I can’t speak to that. I, frankly, don’t know. It can happen any of a number of ways.

QUESTION: In instances such as this, is it standard practice to relay all claims of responsibility sort of no matter –

MS. NULAND: Yes.

QUESTION: — where they come from, who they might be?

MS. NULAND: Yes.

QUESTION: So I mean, it could be somebody waving a flag in the air and saying, “I’m responsible,” and that would also be reported?

MS. NULAND: Yes.

QUESTION: So there’s no sort of value judgment on the reliability of the claim implied by having it relayed through this system that you have?

MS. NULAND: And in fact, there are instances where the Ops Center might send out messages that three different groups are claiming responsibility for the same event. But it’s standard practice for them, when we have breaking news, for them to inform all of the principals in this building so that everybody knows what’s moving.

QUESTION: Well, fair enough. But I mean, if a claim is ludicrously unbelievable – I don’t know, I mean, like if someone forged the Quaker Church or something and said that they were – that would be passed on as well?

MS. NULAND: Well, they obviously use their judgment as to whether they think it’s important for principals in this building to be aware of what’s out there, particularly what’s out there in the public domain.

QUESTION: Okay. So it was deemed important enough – and I’m going to assume that important enough means that it was presumably credible to pass on to other – to pass on to the principals in other agencies, correct?

MS. NULAND: Again –

QUESTION: I’m just – I mean, if I had said that I take responsibility for this, would that have gone up the chain?

MS. NULAND: They definitely would not have passed on your personal claim of responsibility, Matt.

QUESTION: Okay. All right. Fine. So – because it wouldn’t have been credible. Now maybe – I mean, it wouldn’t – what I’m getting at is that if it wasn’t a claim that had the possibility of credibility, it wouldn’t have been passed on, correct?

MS. NULAND: What I’d like to say here is that in keeping folks informed, the Ops Center obviously is looking at the totality of what’s out there in the public domain. When things begin to become picked up, when they become something that people are talking about, they obviously have a responsibility to inform principals. But it is not the job of the Operations Center in passing these things on to analyze them, to weight them in any way, shape, or form. They’re just –

QUESTION: Well, but in fact, they are weighting – had there been a hundred claims of responsibility that night and 99 of them had been from a group or a person that couldn’t possibly have done it, they wouldn’t have passed those on, correct?

MS. NULAND: In all likelihood, if there had been a hundred claims of responsibility that night, they would have done a summary which said more than a hundred groups, including Matt Lee, have claimed responsibility for this attack, is what they would have reported.

QUESTION: And then said that –

MS. NULAND: And not evaluated them one way or the other.

QUESTION: Really? So they would have given my alleged claim of responsibility equal weight with that of a known terrorist group in Libya?

MS. NULAND: Again, Matt, you’re – we’re getting into crazy land here. My point is simply that if the environment is saturated with claims of responsibility, they’re going to make sure that principals know that we’ve got competing claims. That’s my only point here.

QUESTION: And again, just while we’re on this sort of procedure, while we’re in crazy land – (laughter) – what’s the -

Someone needs to explain the lack of security. That and why they watched the attack go on for hours and did nothing.

Prior lack of security: The Obama election-narrative was that his foreign policy was a huge ongoing success. To support that narrative, he couldn’t be seen bumping up security in Benghazi (or anywhere else in the middle east, for that matter). He and Hillary didn’t care if the reality didn’t support the narrative (hence the refusal to up the security in response to requests). The narrative trumped reality as far as they were concerned.

The Benghazi attack itself and lack of support during it: was a result of paralysis stemming from chaos and panic at the white house and state department. The narrative crumbled like a house of cards. Someone (we don’t know who yet) seized on the video, and they ran with it (not thinking it through clearly).

The legacy media “journalists”…Romney is not talking about Benghazi so why should we cover it?

d1carter on October 24, 2012 at 10:48 PM

The Benghazi attack itself and lack of support during it: was a result of paralysis stemming from chaos and panic at the white house and state department. The narrative crumbled like a house of cards. Someone (we don’t know who yet) seized on the video, and they ran with it (not thinking it through clearly).

Godzilla on October 24, 2012 at 10:46 PM

It wasn’t paralysis, it was intentional denial.

Obama NEED/ED his failed foreign policy to be held up by Leftmedia and exposing the Benghazi (and other) failures to the public would expose Obama’s failed foreign policy and his wretched ethics (“it’s all about meeeee”).

Obama and Hillary have TRIED terribly to keep this issue out of public scrutiny BECAUSE it would and does now reveal them both to be utter creeps. And worse.

2007 West Point Study
*********************

Shows Benghazi-Darnah-Tobruk Area was a World Leader in Al Qaeda Suicide Bomber Recruitment

“Serpents, thirst, heat, and sand … Libya alone can present a multitude of woes that it would beseem men to fly from.”

-Lucan,Pharsalia
===================

It turns out that there is, in the form of a December 2007 West Point study examining the background of foreign guerrilla fighters

— jihadis or mujahedin, including suicide bombers — crossing the Syrian border into Iraq during the 2006-2007 timeframe, under the auspices of the international terrorist organization Al Qaeda. This study is based on a mass of about 600 Al Qaeda personnel files which were captured by US forces in the fall of 2007, and analyzed at West Point using a methodology which we will discuss after having presented the main findings. The resulting study1 permits us to make important findings about the mentality and belief structures of the northeastern Libyan population that is furnishing the basis for the rebellion, permitting important conclusions about the political nature of the anti-Qaddafi revolt in these areas.

Darnah, northeast Libya: World Capital of Jihadis

The most striking finding which emerges from the West Point study is that the corridor which goes from Benghazi to Tobruk, passing through the city of Darnah (also transliterated as Derna) them represents one of the greatest concentrations of jihadi terrorists to be found anywhere in the world, and by some measures can be regarded as the leading source of suicide bombers anywhere on the planet. Darnah, with one terrorist fighter sent into Iraq to kill Americans for every 1,000 to 1,500 persons of population, emerges as suicide bomber heaven, easily surpassing the closest competitor, which was Riyad, Saudi Arabia.(More….)

Hillary and Zero just aren’t all that smart. That is the bottom line here. They were “created” by an equally ill-informed and ignorant media, foisted upon us as our “betters” with absolutely no professional experience in their adult lives until they landed the mother lode in politics well into their 40s, and they just are not all that smart. They’re kinda dumb. And simple. And being in charge is hard for dumb, simple folks. Everything is fine…until it isn’t. And then all hell breaks loose because these inexperienced, simple-minded people cannot muster an appropriate reaction when all eyes land on them. They are both way out of their depth, and have been for a long, long time.

faraway on October 24, 2012 at 10:51 PM

He didn’t pullout. He and Biden are LYING. (I know. You’re shocked.)

Here the NYT:

Per the NYT:

“All American forces were to leave Iraq by the end of 2011, the departure date set in an agreement signed by President George W. Bush and Mr. Maliki in 2008. Even so, Mr. Obama left the door open to KEEPING TROOPS IN IRAQ to train Iraqi forces if an agreement could be negotiated.

Convening a videoconference on Oct. 6, 2010, Mr. Biden and top American officials reviewed the options. The vice president favored a plan that would keep Mr. Maliki as prime minister, but which involved installing his main rival, Mr. Allawi, leader of the Iraqiya bloc, near the top of the pyramid. To make way for Mr. Allawi, Mr. Biden suggested that Mr. Talabani, an ethnic Kurd, be shifted from the presidency and given another position. “Let’s make him foreign minister,” Mr. Biden said, according to the notes of the meeting.

“Thanks a lot, Joe,” Mrs. Clinton said, noting that Mr. Biden had cast the Foreign Ministry as a consolation prize.

Mr. Biden also predicted that the Americans could work out a deal with a government led by Mr. Maliki. “Maliki wants us to stick around because he does not see a future in Iraq otherwise,” Mr. Biden said. “I’LL BET YOU MY VICE-PRESIDENCY MALIKI WILL EXTEND THE SOFA,” he added, he added, referring to the Status of Forces Agreement the Obama administration hoped to negotiate.

James B. Steinberg, the deputy secretary of state, questioned whether Mr. Biden’s plan would make the already inefficient Iraqi government more dysfunctional.

Admiral Mullen sent a classified letter to Mr. Donilon that recommended keeping 16,000 troops.

The attempt by Mr. Obama and his senior aides to fashion an extraordinary power-sharing arrangement between Mr. Maliki and Mr. Allawi NEVER MATERIALIZED. NEITHER DID AN AGREEMENT THAT WOULD HAVE KEPT A SMALL AMERICAN FORCE IN IRAQ TO TRAIN THE IRAQI MILITARY AND PATROL THE COUNTRY’S SKIES. A plan to use American civilians to train the Iraqi police has been severely cut back. The result is an Iraq that is less stable domestically and less reliable internationally than the United States had envisioned.”

In the end, BIDEN’S PLAN WAS REBUFFED by the Iraqis and the SOFA WAS NOT EXTENDED.

OK, then Murdouck or Romney should ask Obama when does life begin because the Democrats’ candidate for Senate in Connecticut says that it does not begin until birth.

Obama should also be asked if he believes in the bill that Akin introduced that would have cut of funding for abortions except in the cases of life of the mother, incest and “forcible rape,” which is actually a legal term, because Mr Murdouck’s opponent supported it.
