Closing argument: Romney to deliver “significant” speech on economy this Friday

posted at 8:41 pm on October 24, 2012 by Allahpundit

A speech this Friday, then the last jobs report next Friday. I wonder what trivial issue Team O will seize on tomorrow to steer the media away from those economic bookends. Back to the car elevator thing, maybe? We haven’t heard about that in awhile.

Mitt Romney will deliver a significant speech on the economy Friday, according to a top campaign aide, when just 11 days remain in the presidential race.

His speech will be delivered in Ames, Iowa, and is aimed at “reinforcing the big choice in November,” a top campaign adviser told CNN…

“We’ve had four debates and he hasn’t been able to describe what his plan is to get this economy going,” the GOP candidate said [at a rally in Reno]. “You can boil what he’s saying down to four simple words, and that is: ‘more of the same.’”

Interesting that he’s doing this in Iowa instead of Ohio, where he and Ryan will appear later on Friday. Presumably there’s some sort of “full circle” vibe he’s going for, that his message at the end of the campaign is the same as it was when things began in Ames last year, but I’m surprised he didn’t choose a more viable swing state, like Wisconsin or New Hampshire — or Ohio, of course — instead. No quibbling about the chosen subject, though. New from the ABC/WaPo tracker, in which Romney continues to lead by a point:

Looking at handling the economy as a broad issue, Romney’s lead among independents has swelled to 56 to 39 percent in the new poll, an advantage that helps him to a sizable, 12-point lead over Obama when it comes to their voting preferences. Obama won independent and other voters by eight percentage points in 2008.

Across all three debates, 40 percent of independents say their impressions of Romney improved; fewer than half as many, 18 percent, say their views deteriorated. Twice as many independents say their views of Obama are worse as say better, 20 percent to 10 percent.

Romney also now leads, again by a point, in today’s Reuters tracker. Among independents, he’s up by six. The national polls continue to look good; it’s a matter now of those trends bleeding into the big five — OH, VA, CO, WI, and NH — and giving him a clear path to 270+. Or maybe I should say big six: A new poll has Romney within half a point of Obama in … Michigan. I’m not sure what to make of it given that the response rate was north of three percent (1,122 respondents out of 35,000 calls(!) placed) and that O’s been ahead by at least three points in nearly every poll taken there since August, but with 16 electoral votes, Michigan’s almost a perfect substitute for Ohio (18) or Wisconsin+New Hampshire (14). If Romney can lock down the three that he needs to put him on the doorstep of 270 (Florida, Virginia, and Colorado), winning Michigan would singlehandedly deliver him the presidency. Hmmmm.

Here’s something new from the campaign to keep the good vibes flowing over the last 13 days.

Even sports talk stations, which have had a virtual absence of political ads, are featuring numerous Romney blurbs.

Either Ohio’s a done deal, or they feel Ohioans are getting sick and tired of all the campaign stops. It’s not like Ohioans won’t still get to hear the message, but he’ll probably get a better crowd in Iowa (perhaps like the one in Colorado?) and may get a bigger bump in Iowa from holding the speech there than he would have in Ohio.

Re: Michigan poll…

I could believe Romney’s making progress there. Remember that they’ve been hearing Obama’s “He would have liquidated GM” attack for most of the year. The debates are likely the first time they’ve heard Romney’s strong defense against that line of attack. And I thought he was pretty strong on the “I grew up in Michigan” and “My grandfather was a car guy in Detroit” lines in the debate. If those aren’t worth 3% in Michigan, I don’t know what would be.

The 3% response rate is troubling — but no idea whether that’s typical in the “swing states” right now. They must be getting pretty tired of all the political ads and polling.

Re: Massachusetts…

I think Scott Brown will probably win, but Romney won’t be close. I’m finally seeing a bunch of Romney yard signs appearing (in yards that used to have just Scott Brown signs), but even so. If Scott Brown wins it will be both because Elizabeth Warren is a particularly weak candidate, and because he’s run well to the left of Romney’s positions.

I’m actually a bit surprised Deval Patrick didn’t run against Scott Brown. He’s already announced he won’t be running for governor again in 2014, and he’d easily take the seat. And a Massachusetts senate seat, for a Democrat, is a lifetime appointment.

There’s a bunch of support for Romney here, and he’ll do much better than McCain did, but not by enough. For Massachusetts to go for Romney would take a landslide of Reaganesque proportions

I’m thinking that all the Bishops and Electrogods, etc., etc., etc., have been deemed a drag on the system. Time for some fresh Hot air around here. ENOUGH with the nonstop chatting among all the “kool kid” geriatrics who have glommed on to this site as a convenient chat room to discuss the mundane and irrelevant. Frankly, I think that HA should toss our ALL subscribers and start over again.

Just my two cents.

Promises to break speech. Awesome. Gonna have to listen to him talk about how immoral it is to run trillion dollar deficits, not mentioning if 4 years of him running 999 billion, 950b 900b and 800b are perfectly moral. Promises of balance by 10 or 12 years, times he is out of office and not in power to do anything about them. How about you promise me what your deficit will be on year 2, 4, 6 and 8 of your presidency?

thanks Romney, my life would be pointless without you telling me how I have to prepare my child to pay for all the debt your generation keeps piling onto her back. Really appreciate you increasing that just not moral debt load you will be handing off to her.

Have you seen the new Romney ad w/the older gentleman who sounds like he’s from the former Soviet Block? It wasn’t put out by the Romney campaign-it was bought and paid for my the gentleman in it.
I though of you-not that you’re old-when I saw it.

annoyinglittletwerp on October 24, 2012 at 9:19 PM

That’s the Thomas Petterffy ad. I’ve seen it more on TV (and also preceeding YouTube vids) than any other ad. Hope it does some good. He’s Hungarian – kind of the anti-Soros.

I’m joining the…Texas needs to become a sovereign state again movement if we lose.
I’m feeling optimistic that I won’t need to do something so drastic.

annoyinglittletwerp on October 24, 2012 at 8:55 PM

No matter who wins, I’d favor a Texas’ spinoff (can’t use the other S word because of the moderation here) and a return to a sovereign republic. But, it ain’t gonna happen. On the other hand, under our treaty/agreement upon joining the USA, we could still split into five separate states which would give the Senate eight more conservative votes, i.e., six more than it will have when Cruz is elected in November, the other two from South Texas, likely libs. This ultimately may have to be done at some point anyway, to save the USA from itself.

It is never Barry’s fault or shortcoming, or that he has no record to run on that he is failing. It is Team Barry should use a different scam or deploy a different con man.

You were good earlier with your act as a liberal.

You are BOTH wonderful patriots!

Thank you. I have done many covers for this author, she has stayed loyal to me. The book is slowly crawling up the NYT bestseller list.

This place has become a life line for me. I need to be here whenever I can. Two weeks, two weeks and we’ll know for sure.

Watching that video, I feel really hopeful.

Jvette on October 24, 2012 at 9:54 PM

And if Romney wins… then it’s on to governing a nation in a heap of trouble with the media carping every 2 minutes “Are we there yet!?”

Brace yourselves.

When President Obama Loved Private Equity
*****************************************

President Obama has demonized private equity throughout this campaign. But ABC is reporting tonight that there was a time not long ago when President Obama praised private equity as a “one of the key mechanisms by which we finance new businesses in the state of Illinois.”

My dad told me you could once buy a single cigarette for two cents at a drug store.

Liam on October 24, 2012 at 9:42 PM

I doubt it was ten years ago you could still buy one for a dime out of styrofoam cups next to gas station registers here in NC.
