Reuters: White House, State Dep’t received e-mails within two hours of Benghazi attack about jihadi group taking credit

posted at 11:21 pm on October 23, 2012 by Allahpundit

No Quotes of the Day tonight. Read this instead.

We actually know most of this already, I think. Remember this Reuters story from October 2 describing multiple intelligence reports about a jihadi connection even in the first few hours afterward? How about the AP’s piece four days ago about the CIA’s station chief informing the White House within 24 hours that militants might be involved? The White House had plenty of reason to suspect more was going on than a protest that got out of hand, even from the very beginning. But that would meddle with one of O’s strongest reelection narratives, i.e. the president who demolished Al Qaeda (read this for a stark illustration of how certain key supporters are helping him out with that), so we didn’t hear about it until Eli Lake and CNN and Reuters all but dragged it out of him.

What we didn’t know until now is that the White House Situation Room got a heads up on whodunnit early enough that Chris Stevens may well have still been alive at the time.

The emails, obtained by Reuters from government sources not connected with U.S. spy agencies or the State Department and who requested anonymity, specifically mention that the Libyan group called Ansar al-Sharia had asserted responsibility for the attacks…

A third email, also marked SBU and sent at 6:07 p.m. Washington time, carried the subject line: “Update 2: Ansar al-Sharia Claims Responsibility for Benghazi Attack.”

The message reported: “Embassy Tripoli reports the group claimed responsibility on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli.”

While some information identifying recipients of this message was redacted from copies of the messages obtained by Reuters, a government source said that one of the addresses to which the message was sent was the White House Situation Room, the president’s secure command post.

Carney mentioned afterwards that “extremists” might have been involved in the, ahem, spontaneous protest, but he didn’t name Ansar al-Sharia or suggest that U.S. intelligence had a particular group in mind. Which is curious, because the e-mails pointing to the group’s Twitter/Facebook claims weren’t the White House’s only piece of evidence against them. Eli Lake reported three weeks ago that American spies captured communications between Ansar al-Sharia and the local Al Qaeda affiliate after the attack.

More from Fox News:

Ansar al Sharia has been declared by the State Department to be a an Al Qaeda-affiliated group. A member of the group suspected of participating in the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi has been arrested and is being held in Tunisia…

Fox News was told that an estimated 300 to 400 national security figures received these emails in real time almost as the raid was playing out and concluding. People who received these emails work directly under the nation’s top national security, military and diplomatic officials, Fox News was told.

If I understand the White House’s Benghazi narrative in its current form, it boils down to this. There was no protest, but the attack was still kinda sorta spontaneous insofar as it was inspired by what was happening at the embassy in Cairo. And it wasn’t an official Al Qaeda or Ansar al-Sharia operation, even though members of AQIM and Ansar al-Sharia — including the founder of the latter group — were on the scene and/or participating. Essentially, the White House wants you to believe that members of two prominent jihadist paramilitary groups were kicking around on September 11 when one of them turned on the TV, heard about the Mohammed movie from coverage of the Egyptian embassy assault, and decided to quickly pull together a complex, heavily-armed attack on the local U.S. consulate involving 20 or so people. Never mind that there had been harassment of, and attacks on, western interests in the city for months; these guys apparently had no serious designs on Chris Stevens or his compatriots until they heard about the YouTube video and hulked out in the form of an organized armed raid. The only thing that makes this story plausible is that security for Stevens at the compound was so disgracefully poor that hardened jihadis probably could have drawn up a play in the dirt outside the building and gotten to the ambassador. That’s Obama’s defense here, essentially — that the consulate was so easily breached thanks to threadbare protection for Stevens that it’s quite possible the whole thing was put together by amateurs, without planning.

Update: Patterico e-mails with a good catch about the Fox News excerpt quoted above. It’s Ansar al-Sharia in Yemen that’s been designated by State as an Al Qaeda affiliate, not Ansar al-Sharia in Libya. There are, in fact, multiple Ansar al-Sharias in Libya; I wrote a bit about that here. Al Qaeda HQ in Pakistan has evidently been using that name as an alias for some of its affiliates. The Benghazi group may or may not be one of them, but given their contacts with AQIM after the attack as described above, it’s probably a matter of time before State designates them an official AQ affiliate too.

Victoria Nuland
Spokesperson
Daily Press Briefing
Washington, DC
September 13, 2012

QUESTION: Was there any kind of special precautions, considering that 9/11 – the 11th anniversary of 9/11 was occurring? Were there any kind of special precautions that were taken to counter such a possibility?

MS. NULAND: Well, as I said, we reviewed our security posture at every mission we have around the world in the lead-up to September 11th. Every mission then makes whatever recommendations it thinks are necessary with regard to hardening and strengthening. But I’m not prepared to talk about the details, not there or not anywhere, today.

Please.

QUESTION: Within those limitations, I just wanted to be clear. When the President yesterday made his order to increase security, does that then require a new review or does that set forth a new set of actions by missions around the world, or has that already been undertaken in the September 11th context?

MS. NULAND: Well, there are two different things here. The first, as we talked about on background yesterday, the night of the incident we sent a message to every diplomatic mission in the world asking them to again review security and take the necessary measures. Some of you will have seen that there were increased emergency warnings or security warnings that were also issued to Americans in some 50-plus missions around the world since that went out. That’s part and parcel of the reviews that embassies and consulates and other missions around the world do.

With regard to Mission Libya, I think you’ve seen the Pentagon talk to the issue of evacuating Benghazi while we assess the security situation, which we’ve now done, to bringing in the fast team, which we very much appreciate, for Embassy Tripoli. And we are continuing to look at our posture.

Reuters: White House, State Dep’t received e-mails within two hours of Benghazi attack about jihadi group taking credit

Yeah, but Obama was only awake for the first 90 minutes of that time period…so you can’t blame him for whatever happened in the last half hour. You’ve got to make other people bear their fair share. Besides, how can you blame a guy for getting his beauty sleep? He had a big day of fundraising in Las Vegas planned for the next day!

Resist We Much on October 23, 2012 at 11:46 PM

So two hours in, he knows it is Ansar al-Sharia is attacking the location of his ambassador, the same ambassador denied security, and he jets off to Las Vegas to beg for more money. Is it me or does it seem even creepier this evening?

Cindy Munford on October 23, 2012 at 11:46 PM

I wonder if Netanyahu has the white house situation room address. The jihadis do, if I’m reading that correctly.

These were Obama’s ground troops in Libya. It’s much worse than what conservatives are saying about Obama merely wanting to conceal terrorism so that he could say it’s not a problem anymore. This is the most shameful incident that has happened to a US president. Obama started an illegal war and hired al qaeda to fight it, and shockingly, they turned on Obama. I’d say they turned against the US, but it wasn’t a US war. It was Obama’s war.

Obama/Biden/Panetta blabbed in the Sit. room for a time and then Obama went to bed. The next morning he said a few words in the rose garden, then flew to Vegas, where he looked/spoke pretty jovially.

The e-mail just released to Reuters was also posted on Facebook and Twitter.

The video was pulled out of Obama’s azz. Because most of the media live there they can’t see/smell it. To them it’s all sh*t.

But that’s not the conclusion reached by the WSJ in its coverage of intelligence reports sent by the CIA to the White House. You don’t seem to understand the concept ‘fog of war’ and just assume that everything is clear as events unfold on the ground.

Come on, people.

You all act surprised and indignant over obama.

What did you expect from one who has never accomplished anything in his pathetic life?

He got elected you say.

Perfect storm. Public schools. Leftist media. Hollywood. Black worship.

= obama.

Nothing he’s done surprises me. I don’t get indignant. I don’t hate obama. I hate the supposedly smart idiots that put him in office.

Not the obamaphone broads. The Althouses of the world.

DOD blocking questionnaire on Benghazi attack from Chairman of House Armed Services Committee

This was from Saturday.

I thought two years ago that the 2010 elections were the most important of our lifetime. Without flipping the House I doubt we would never have known most of this.

I thought the two versions compliment one another well and made an interesting juxtaposition. :)

.
Hawkdriver commented yesterday that he and his colleagues kicked around timelines, assets in place in theater, etc and deteermined there were no viable rescue/strike scenarios.

He also poined out there has to be SOME planning time allowed for a coordinated response that won’t end up getting MORE people killed. You don’t just have planes, SEALS/SOF, drones etc just scramble to see who can get there first.

PolAgnostic on October 23, 2012 at 11:57 PM

I do that anyway. I’m the nervous sort. Lol!

Bmore on October 23, 2012 at 11:55 PM

I use CCleaner from http://www.piriform.com. Cleans up your registry too.

Not ‘lured’… ordered in.

thatsafactjack on October 23, 2012 at 11:35 PM

No, lured by the wild ones.

DBear, you’ll get 2 out of the 3 idiots. You deserve the two females. Pelosi is insane, on dope or drinks, or all 3 and Feinstein and her husband are crooks who cheat millions out of the Medicare system.

Sarah Palin & Greta Obliterate Obama On Benghazi-Gate

DBear on October 23, 2012 at 11:44 PM

Yeah, the big dummy, the media was ignoring Benghazi until they thought Gov. Romney stepped in it. Then it became front page news and now events are pushing the coverage and it will be interesting to see what the media will do for their god.

Greta has photos of the top portion of the e-mails with some specifics redacted to show when and to what dept/area they were sent.
