Megyn Kelly: Media in spin room laughed and applauded at Obama’s “bayonets” line

posted at 4:41 pm on October 23, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite. I take it the defense here will be that they weren’t rooting for Obama, just grooving on a righteous zinger expertly dealt even though it was incorrect on the merits. But maybe I’m wrong; maybe there’ll be no defense. The media’s gotten more forthright about its biases and shortcomings over the past 10 years thanks to the endless watchdogging online, so there’s no sense grasping for excuses. Why bother? Everyone knows the score. This isn’t the first time reporters have been caught rooting publicly against a Republican, either. The Seattle Times gave bloggers a week of laughs five years ago when they admitted that some staff members had cheered Karl Rove’s resignation; the editor reprimanded them for showing partisanship in a place as “sacred and magical” as the newsroom. A few days later, Joe Scarborough revealed that people in the MSNBC “newsroom” had booed Bush consistently through one of his SOTUs. When he told MSNBC prez Phil Griffin about it, Griffin supposedly “turned red very quickly” and put a stop to it. And that’s how MSNBC became the sober, studiously nonpartisan investigative news team that you know today.

Speaking of Fox and last night’s debate, it ended up being the highest-rated program in the network’s history, slightly ahead of their audience for the Palin/Biden debate in 2008. Total television viewers according to Nielsen’s preliminary estimate were 53.9 million, which is predictably way off the pace of the first and second debates. Too much competition last night with the NLCS and “Monday Night Football” and likely not enough interest in foreign policy. It may also be that low-information voters decided they didn’t need a third look at Romney. He killed in the first debate and was perfectly acceptable in the second, so he’d already cleared the bar of viability. And he knew it, which is why he was playing prevent defense.

False. Unbelievably, wildly false. Every American infantryman is issued a bayonet. There are more than twice as many bayonets in service now as there were in 1916.

Additionally, the most recent mass bayonet charge was in Afghanistan, in 2004.

Washington Nearsider on October 23, 2012 at 6:40 PM

You know, memes and tweets work best when they are self-explanatory, which is why I don’t think “bayonets” will get any traction. Unless you knew the whole context, you would have no idea what is so funny (or not funny) about that word.

Christian Science Monitor:

The Marines and the Army both still issue rifle-mounted knives to serve as hand weapons, utility knives, saws, and all-around handy items.

Bayonet training is an integral part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which every recruit must pass. During such training, recruits fix OKC-3S bayonets underneath the muzzles of their rifles, effectively turning it into a spear. They’re taught thrusts, jabs, and slashes, according to a Marine public affairs account of such training. They then must use these techniques on a dummy-filled course intended to simulate close combat.

As for horses, there’s still at least one equestrian unit in the US Army. That’s the Caisson Platoon of the 3rd US Infantry, “The Old Guard.”

And you wonder why we laugh at you?

chumpThreads on October 23, 2012 at 6:34 PM

Then allow me to explain why you are a clueless liberal swine and a fool.

Only four weeks ago bayonets were used.

When one puts a Marixst fool in charge of a Country, humans are killed, but rarely do their comments make the media and Liberal twits say: “How Clever!”.

In the debate with Romney (a Man), the O-hole made a seemingly off hand comment about bayonets being out of date.

This from the man who four weeks ago allowed Men to die in Benghazi because he dithered for 7 hours while they waited for rescue and Air assets from a base only 1 hours flight time from the Embassy. A base full of A-10′s and a Spooky gunship. He watched via Satellite feed and Drone camera. Watched while Humans died.

But why did the comment about bayonets enrage me you ask? Because he is the one signing the Letters to the families about their deaths, two SEAL’s, a Marine and the Ambassador himself (Who was Sodomized as well).

Men who fought like Leonidas for 7 hours against rocket propelled grenades and AK’s with their hands. They were without ammo, so they fought with their minds, teeth, nails, hands, feet, empty rifles and, haha, bayonets. Because the O-hole didn’t want to enrage our enemies, they died.

How do you think the families of the dead felt at his clever “joke”?

Not to Be a Stickler on Bayonets, But …
**************************************

From the department of picayune fact-checking: The U.S. Army has 419,155 bayonets in its inventory. The Marine Corps has about 195,334 bayonets (and has plans to acquire 175,061 more).

President Barack Obama said Monday night that the U.S. had fewer horses and bayonets than in 1916, by way of rebutting Mitt Romney’s charge that the Navy has fewer ships than any time since 1917.

Mr. Obama appears to be on the money with horses. In 1916, the U.S. Army still had mounted cavalry forces, creating a demand for horses on the battlefield. Today the Army only has 176 horses in its “on-hand inventory.” (Though, to be sure, the Special Forces in Afghanistan from time to time borrow local steeds.)

And Mitt will likely continue to play “prevent” all the way to the election. Against a campaigner like President Obama, that is a losing strategy.

People left and right agree the President lost the first debate. But I have yet to hear a rightist acknowledge that Romney lost the next two. He got fact-checked in the second and “bayoneted” in the third.

Prevent defense? It will only prevent him from winning.

Yes, they are still issued and soldiers still train with them, but how many bayonets have you seen on American rifles in Afghanistan?

They are used in Afghanistan, but use wasn’t the point that Obama was trying to make. Cost was. Even if we kept the price of bayonets the same, the fact that we have more than double the number we had in 1914 means that we aren’t cutting the amount of money spent on “outmoded technology.”

Obama’s all the way wrong here.

Our bayonets cost around $30 each, and their last modification entered service in 2003. It’s cheap, it’s current, and there are more of them now than there were in 1914.

Background on chump’s nom

Give Me Immortality or Give Me Death is a comedy album by The Firesign Theatre that was released in 1998 on Rhino Records.

-snip-

The album takes the form of a fictional radio broadcast on the night of December 31, 1999. Radio Now is a radio station in FunFunTown (apparently modeled after Los Angeles, California) whose format changes approximately every hour at the slightest whims of overzealous market researchers and focus groups. The album chronicles Radio Now’s attempt to operate normally on the final day before the year 2000, a day riddled with apocalyptic omens, rampant computer errors, and dangerous doomsayers. The station is populated by DJ Bebop Loco (Phil Austin), Dwayne, his producer (Peter Bergman), news anchors Harold Hiphugger (David Ossman) and Ray Hamberger (Philip Proctor), sports commentator Chump Threads (Bergman), and self-help guru O’Nann Winquedinque (Austin).

I HAVE read it.

He NEVER said “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt.” That title was written by the New York Times.

Unlike Obama and the coal industry, he NEVER said “let GM and Chrysler go bankrupt.” He recommended that they go through a MANAGED BANKRUPTCY, which is what both companies ultimately did.

He wrote that the government should guarantee financing and warranties. If you think that GM and Chrysler couldn’t have obtained financing even with Federal guarantees, then I most definitely disagree. I KNOW that both could have.

You’ve got to love the delusional left. This guy Michael Tomasky has an article today in the Daily Beast that says all this stuff about Romney momentum is a mirage falsely created by the Republicans. He states, in part:

In reality, Obama is the favorite. The state maps still make him so. Nate Silver, the only person who takes every single poll into account (plus loads of other indicators), still has him so.

Yes, the famous political guru Nate Silver still has Obama as the favorite.

He did though write this:
If General Motors, Ford and Chrysler get the bailout that their chief executives asked for yesterday, you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye.

Why don’t you read Romney’d op-ed.

verbaluce on October 23, 2012 at 7:06 PM

Ok, let’s, but first let’s recap the exchange between Romney and the boy king last night, shall we?

ROMNEY: I’m a son of Detroit. I was born in Detroit. My dad was head of a car company. I like American cars. And I would do nothing to hurt the U.S. auto industry. My plan to get the industry on its feet when it was in real trouble was not to start writing checks. It was President Bush that wrote the first checks. I disagree with that. I said they need — these companies need to go through a managed bankruptcy. And in that process, they can get government help and government guarantees, but they need to go through bankruptcy to get rid of excess cost and the debt burden that they’d — they’d built up.

And fortunately…

(CROSSTALK)

OBAMA: Governor Romney, that’s not what you said…

(CROSSTALK)

OBAMA: Governor Romney, you did not…

ROMNEY: You can take a look at the op-ed…

(CROSSTALK)

OBAMA: You did not say that you would provide government help.

ROMNEY: I said that we would provide guarantees, and — and that was what was able to allow these companies to go through bankruptcy, to come out of bankruptcy. Under no circumstances would I do anything other than to help this industry get on its feet. And the idea that has been suggested that I would liquidate the industry, of course not. Of course not.

(CROSSTALK)

OBAMA: Let’s check the record.

From “the record”:

It is not wrong to ask for government help, but the automakers should come up with a win-win proposition. I believe the federal government should invest substantially more in basic research — on new energy sources, fuel-economy technology, materials science and the like — that will ultimately benefit the automotive industry, along with many others. I believe Washington should raise energy research spending to $20 billion a year, from the $4 billion that is spent today. The research could be done at universities, at research labs and even through public-private collaboration. The federal government should also rectify the imbedded tax penalties that favor foreign carmakers.

But don’t ask Washington to give shareholders and bondholders a free pass — they bet on management and they lost.

The American auto industry is vital to our national interest as an employer and as a hub for manufacturing. A managed bankruptcy may be the only path to the fundamental restructuring the industry needs. It would permit the companies to shed excess labor, pension and real estate costs. The federal government should provide guarantees for post-bankruptcy financing and assure car buyers that their warranties are not at risk.

In a managed bankruptcy, the federal government would propel newly competitive and viable automakers, rather than seal their fate with a bailout check.

Is that now off limits, or do you go by a separate set of rules?
