Megyn Kelly: Media in spin room laughed and applauded at Obama’s “bayonets” line

posted at 4:41 pm on October 23, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite. I take it the defense here will be that they weren’t rooting for Obama, just grooving on a righteous zinger expertly dealt even though it was incorrect on the merits. But maybe I’m wrong; maybe there’ll be no defense. The media’s gotten more forthright about its biases and shortcomings over the past 10 years thanks to the endless watchdogging online, so there’s no sense grasping for excuses. Why bother? Everyone knows the score. This isn’t the first time reporters have been caught rooting publicly against a Republican, either. The Seattle Times gave bloggers a week of laughs five years ago when they admitted that some staff members had cheered Karl Rove’s resignation; the editor reprimanded them for showing partisanship in a place as “sacred and magical” as the newsroom. A few days later, Joe Scarborough revealed that people in the MSNBC “newsroom” had booed Bush consistently through one of his SOTUs. When he told MSNBC prez Phil Griffin about it, Griffin supposedly “turned red very quickly” and put a stop to it. And that’s how MSNBC became the sober, studiously nonpartisan investigative news team that you know today.

Speaking of Fox and last night’s debate, it ended up being the highest-rated program in the network’s history, slightly ahead of their audience for the Palin/Biden debate in 2008. Total television viewers according to Nielsen’s preliminary estimate were 53.9 million, which is predictably way off the pace of the first and second debates. Too much competition last night with the NLCS and “Monday Night Football” and likely not enough interest in foreign policy. It may also be that low-information voters decided they didn’t need a third look at Romney. He killed in the first debate and was perfectly acceptable in the second, so he’d already cleared the bar of viability. And he knew it, which is why he was playing prevent defense.

Half of the MSM believe their own leftist dribble; and they stupidly think Obama is still going to win.

They are in for a rude awakening over the next 2 weeks. And when they wake up, we are going to witness one of the most biased, ridiculous conniption fits in recent history.

These a__holes are not going down without a fight. The good news is, Romney put most of them to sleep last night by not raising any foreign policy alarms.

I live in an uber-liberal area of DC and lots of my neighbors are Capitol Hill staffers or otherwise connected to Congress. When I took the dog out at 10pm the night of the 2010 election, I passed a couple where the woman was openly sobbing and her partner was telling her that “these things happen.” Clearly her boss (and job) had just lost to some evil Tea Party Republican. If we replaced all the Yellow Cabs in NYC by horses and buggies, how quaint that would look around Central Park, providing thousands of jobs for Bloomberg’s army of street cleaners sweeping horse manure, they wouldn’t even have time to confiscate Super-Sized soda.

Eisenhower CSG braces for nine-month deployment

Navy officials said the long deployment is driven by ongoing demands around the globe and a finite number of ships in the fleet. The Ike CSG is expected to complete operations in the 5th and 6th fleets.

Reposting in case you haven’t seen the latest poll posted at RCP:

IBD/TIPP 2012 Presidential Election Daily Tracking Poll

Day 15: Oct. 23, 2012

Obama: +2.0
Obama 46.5% | Romney 44.5%

Sample: 37/30/32 D +7
MOE: +/- 3.5

* Obama’s lead over Romney eroded further in a polling taken the day of the final debate.

* Romney strengthened among males, going from a 1-point deficit two days ago to a 4-point lead.

* Likewise, Romney has gained 6 points among those described as “working class.”

* Romney also appears to have regained momentum among Catholic voters, among whom he was trailing three days ago, but has opened up an 8-point lead.

All of the movement is in Romney’s direction. I’m sure that RuPoll will be along shortly to tell us that, unlike his predicted Obama second-debate bounce, Obama’s third-debate bounce will materialise and reverse Romney’s momentum.

Romney was talking about the number and age of the ships the Navy wants, i.e. capability. Why does Barack think the Navy ever used horses and bayonets out in the ocean?

Connecticut on October 23, 2012 at 4:56 PM

Theoretically, Obama might have had a point, although he didn’t actually have one.

Obama was trying to present horses and bayonets as examples of outmoded technology that our military (not necessarily the Navy) doesn’t need any more, just like the Navy no longer needs as many ships as it used to.

However, Mitt was saying that the Navy doesn’t have as many ships as the Navy says it needs, which contradicts Obama’s claim.

Not only that, but the military apparently has a lot more bayonets now than it did in 1916, because the Marines are much larger now and all Marines are issued bayonets. (And the Army still uses horses in places like Afghanistan, too, although presumably a lot fewer horses than they needed back in the day.)

One would expect the Commander in Chief to know that bayonets are standard issue in TODAY’S military and that there are MORE BAYONETS in the American military now than there were in 1914.

Also, one would expect him to know “ships that go underwater” have names like the Lusitania, the Titanic, and the Costa Concordia. Submarines are NOT called “ships.” They are BOATS. In naval parlance, ships and boats are NOT the same. German submarines were not referred to as U-ships. They were called U-boats.

I don’t think a President comes off well by calling out the media or any other entrenched institution. Look at how Obama’s war on the Catholic church has come off. A slut at Georgetown law may be getting her contraception for free but thousands of votes went elsewhere.

That being said, President Romney does indeed have to do what Reagan did and simply do an end-run around the media and speak to the people. This too, BTW, was a strength of GWB.

The rat-eared wonder has played the media with exceptional flexibility. They thank him profusely for the few press conferences and open Q&A sessions they get. Remember how outraged Obama got when someone dared ask a question when Obama decided to unilaterally (and illegally) grant legal status to illegal aliens?

But, of course, with Romney in the White House the media will re-discover the homeless and the poor. Which is quite a feat considering they have completely ignored these groups what with all the prosperity and booming economy we have experienced under the Kenyan socialist dictator.

Dang, I need to get my good glasses. That’s Romney +1, not +4.

Ahh, k. Still, it’s a 4 point swing in 9 days, which is big.

The media new Obama lost last night no matter how hard they tried. I checked in on MSNBC and CNN, there weren’t many smiles.

Tater Salad on October 23, 2012 at 5:19 PM

Romney’s best statement of last night when he countered Obama’s apology that the US dictates to other countries, and Romney pointed out that we don’t; the US frees other people from dictators.

Speaking of Fox and last night’s debate, it ended up being the highest-rated program in the network’s history…

It may also be that low-information voters decided they didn’t need a third look at Romney.

Does not compute.

What is this “NLCS” you speak of?

Is that another way of saying NFL? Then if so, right on.

People who work in media — work in media. That applies just as much to Fox as any other outlet.

They’re excited when they get something they can use. Political leanings come a distant second to that.

logis on October 23, 2012 at 5:23 PM

They are still useful. After all the last usage of Bayonets was Benghazi, where abandoned SEALS and Marines without ammo fought for 7 hours while Obama dithered, unable to make up his mind making up his mind NOT to support our people at the Embassy, with Air assets only a hour away.

FIFY to reflect reality.

And that’s how MSNBC became the sober, studiously nonpartisan investigative news team that you know today.

He’s such a genius. I’m thinking about taking the Intercontinental Railroad to the Maldives, which Obama claims are the Falkland Islands. There in the Southern Atlantic so it shouldn’t be a biggie. The train won’t have to cross North Africa or the Middle East on the way to the Indian Ocean…where the OLD Maldives used to be before they, evidently, became the Malvinas.

You know what would be nice? Maybe, Constantine can provide a link of a photograph of Emperor Hirohito formally surrendering to General MacArthur on the deck of the USS Missouri or entertain us with an internet-performance art interpretative dance of Obama’s Ode to “The Bomb That Fell On Pearl Harbour…”

And he knew it, which is why he was playing prevent defense.

Reminded of Coach Madden’s quote where he said, “the only thing the prevent defense does is prevent you from winning.”

We’ll see.
