Ed, give him a break on this if you wish. I will not. And it's not the "optimal" comment that bothers me. What bothers me is that our celebrity wanna be president is sitting w/ Jon Stewart in the first place. He deserves all the blowback he gets simply for being so stupid as to sit for this "interview" (if you are so lenient). The tool should have been in front of the White House press corp taking his bumps in the road from them.

I'm on the fence about this one but we all know (and forgive me if someone upthread already made this point) if Romney said this, it'd be headline news from now until 11/6-Romney uncompassionate, insensitive, unfit for role of commander-in-chief. And they wouldn't give the benefit you do Ed of the context.
Ed, I have to disagree with your analysis. What isn't optimal is a sitting President discussing the death of an ambassador and three Americans and the planned attack on a US embassy with a comedy show host and entertainment outlets. Dismissing any death of a US citizen is repulsive and warrants swift retaliation. Obama has gone from apologizing to our enemies to making excuses for THEIR actions and blaming the victims. THAT isn't optimal. How he responded following the event and has lied repeatedly is NOT optimal.

That Obama recycles Stewart's "optimal" word choice gives us another peek behind Obama's ideology. The death of Americans is never optimal to him. Look at the Ft Hood massacre. Nothing. If the deaths truly bothered him, he would've never callously and casually used Stewart's word. Yet he accepts Stewart's premise because it fits their narrative--the narrative to a re-election victory that supercedes American lives.

It's disappointing that the standard of a President's actions has sunk so low that reputable journalists like yourself excuse such blatant disregard for America lives, sovereignty, and interests as a non-issue and overreacting.

Is it an Obamateurism? Sure — but it’s hardly a sign that Obama was indifferent to the deaths of four Americans.

Ed, it's either a sign that he was/is, in fact, "indifferent" to the deaths...or he's too stupid to understand the meaning of "optimal", and its use in a sentence. Or, both of the above.

Personally, I believe that obama is, indeed, "indifferent" to the deaths of these Americans - just as he's indifferent to the deaths of Americans fighting in Afghanistan and other places.
The only reason that he seems somewhat upset about the deaths in Benghazi is because they are causing problems in his campaign (and the stupid American people just won't shut up and forget about the whole affair).

No it didn't. This is supposed to be the smartest, most well-spoken president ever. When he says something like this, it means he is just another dumb-a$$ politician or he actually doesn't care. Or both. This wasn't just a harmless slip. Ask the mother of the slain diplomat. The correct answer should have been,

"No, John, I wouldn't look at it that way or use those words. The loss of four American lives in Benghazi was terribly tragic and should never have happened."

Ed is correct in his analysis. Obama latched onto the word with which he was presented, and used it in a way which was then easy to mock and ridicule. Amateurish, yes.

But without TOTUS available, there's no escaping that. Obama cannot speak well extemporaneously, and will always piggy-back his speech pattern to any form available at the moment.

That he cannot think on his feet well enough to craft an appropriately presidential, diplomatic, or even optical response is wholly unrelated to his lack of concern for those whose lives were tragically lost because this man runs the government as those hated 1% are purported to run their businesses.

He rails on "corporate fatcats" for cronyism, and has filled his administration with incompetent, unqualified cronies. Understand this; Hillary Clinton, who by any measure is truly unqualified to run State, is one of the MOST qualified members of this administration.

So, when you give the reins of power regarding world events to people who haven't any clue how to manage their respective AORs, who have nothing but the Marxist ideology upon which to found their decision-making, you have PROVEN that you don't care about the consequences, which includes the lives of every diplomat abroad, every military member in the sand, every independent contractor attempting to do good around the world in the name of this great nation. You've left them all in the wind, a wind you helped create by trying to pick winners and losers on the world stage, with just as much success as you have picked winners and losers in business. ZERO success. All failures.

Ed is right, grasping onto a word at the wrong moment doesn't provide evidence of lack of care for those who were murdered. That proof has been available for four years now, and this comment should just be tossed on the heap of horrible optics which the press will continue to ignore.

I understand you might believe your hype, but for the four Americans killed due to your cut rate security, you can't 'make it better'.

Is it an Obamateurism? Sure — but it’s hardly a sign that Obama was indifferent to the deaths of four Americans.

Ah, but Ed, if George W. Buuuuuush had said it, every Democrat in the Senate and house would be lined up at the Floor dais to denounce such an insenstive, uncaring, out of touch President who should resign immediately. Virtually every MSM media person who is or wants to be some one of note in the media would be screaming for blood. Just picture Chrissy Mathews and Ed Schultz for a minute.

These are the new rules because the MSM and the Dems wrote those rules over the last ten years. Jon Stewart didn't start asking gotcha type questions out of the blue. It was in response to how the media, and the liberals treated the conservatives.

Obama fell into a trap of the left's own making. Let him bear the brunt of it. There sure wouldn't have been any respite if it was a Republican.

P.s. That's another reason for Romney to never go on Lame Letterman's show. That's about the only thing that could make me not vote for Romney at this point in time. Ditto for the View.
