Quotes of the day

“I don’t crow about bad polls, I don’t crow about good polls. I just want trends,” said Ron Kaufman, a top Romney adviser. “And the bottom line is the trends are kind of good for us. That’s all that matters at this point. There’s a long way to go.”

“It’s been an enjoyable journey,” he added. “I think we’re having more fun right now than they are.“

***

Obama won [Ohio] in 2008 largely because of a healthy lead among independents and a highly enthusiastic base’s turning out votes. Right now Romney is leading big with independents, has a more enthusiastic base, and is drawing crowds in Ohio that rival Obama’s. While he is down 2.5 points in the polls, the average poll is assuming 2008 turnout which is unlikely to repeat itself this year. Adding the fact that early voting is trending more Republican than in 2008, there is a lot of reason for optimism that this race is much closer than the current polls suggest. Not bad for a candidate who was declared dead in the state just a few weeks ago.

***

Among Keystone State voters in our poll who say the economy and job creation is the most important issue that will influence their vote, voters prefer Romney over Obama by a 54% to 40% margin. This is clear evidence Romney is winning the jobs argument. Voters in Western Pa, who tend to be blue collar, working class Democrats, care about jobs and resent the President’s war on coal. In the Pittsburgh market, Romney is on track to run up huge margins. In the vote-rich Southeast collar counties around Philadelphia, Romney is neck-and-neck with Obama because these more affluent, better educated suburban voters identify with Mitt Romney and a lot of what he stands for. They know he’s not an extremist, know he cares about kids and women, saved the Olympics and wants deficits under control…

This is why our statewide polling was the first to show Romney with an improved image in the Commonwealth after the first debate – 48% now view him favorably, a huge reversal from pre-debate polling. And this is a clear indication even in a “blue” state like Pennsylvania voters are smart enough to know that having a leader in the White House who understands job creation is more important than having the letter “R” or “D” posted outside the Oval office door.

***

The psychology of the race has shifted, a prospect that advisers to Mr. Obama had long fought. They sought to define Mr. Romney as an unacceptable choice, hoping to keep enough voters who supported Mr. Obama in 2008 from seeing Mr. Romney as a plausible alternative…

Here in Florida, the largest competitive state with 29 electoral votes, supporters of Mr. Romney say they have noticed a drastic change since the Oct. 3 debate in Denver, where his strong performance came as he stepped up his advertising in Florida.

“For a long time, the Republican rationale was ‘I just want Obama to lose,’ ” said Brian Ballard, a co-chairman of the Romney campaign in the state. “He opened people’s eyes at the debate. It moved the needle for the pro-Romney vote, not just that we can’t have four more years of the same.”

***

[Obama supporters] at the George Mason University event described various means used to cope with political panic, whether prompted by a poor debate performance or a particularly gnawing poll…

“I felt like I was going to cry [after the debate],” said Nancy Aboulmouna, of Arlington. “I have not yet. Not yet. I just wanted to. I talked to my parents and friends. But then I found out that some of them were Romney supporters and it got worse from there.”

Faced with a campaign narrative not to their liking, some Obama supporters simply tuned out. Johana Posada, 25, of Arlington, said she stopped paying attention to the polls when they began to go south for Obama after that first debate.

***

The Republicans are now the ones offering ideas of progress or reform, while the Democrats fiercely fight to protect the established order of entitlements, tax hikes, and obeisance to unions, greens, and feminists. Even when Obama and Biden have been highly caffeinated, they have not stated their plans and goals for a second term. They are too busy painting a socialist-realist mural of Romney and Ryan as maniacal reactionaries. They are too preoccupied with protecting subsidies for Big Bird, Planned Parenthood, and windmills.

Four years ago, President Obama and Vice President Biden were bursting with plans. Obama said he would cut the deficit, middle-class taxes, and health care premiums, while also creating a new entitlement to health insurance. He said he’d revamp America’s energy, education, and immigration policies for the 21st century. He delivered a speech in the early months of his term saying he’d put America on a “new foundation.” His 2011 State of the Union address was devoted to “winning the future.”

But all of these big dreams have crashed against the granite wall of reality. The deficit is up, the price of fuel and health care premiums has increased, incomes are down, and tax increases loom. Obama is exhausted. His political capital is spent. The boldest proposal he’s put forward recently is hiring another 100,000 teachers. That doesn’t even rise to the level of small-ball. It’s mini-golf.

***

Flash-forward to 2012 and all we’ve seen from the man who promised us hope, change, and a new kind of politics is a nakedly cynical divide and conquer crusade that’s only gotten worse in its closing days. While Romney focuses his closing argument on the future, his agenda, and the realities of governing, our president is literally going all in on Big Bird, contraception, Binder-gate, “Romnesia,” and aids flanking him at rallies holding signs that read: “Women’s Health Security.”

This smallness and naked desperation is not only apparent, it’s familiar. I don’t mean to pick at an old scab, but in the closing days of the ’08 campaign, we saw the same kind of behavior from John McCain. He knew he was losing and in a desperate bid to gain traction, his message became erratic (suspending the campaign) and small (Joe the Plumber).

Probably with good reason, Barack Obama is also not acting like a winner. So bad is his behavior, in fact, that he’s given Romney a massive opening to declare Obama’s behavior “unpresidential.” Wasn’t it just a few weeks ago that Romney was beaten senseless for his lack of substance? The secret’s out: Obama has no second-term agenda.

***

Sure, the Republicans still insist on bringing up trivial, peripheral distractions like Benghazi, Obamacare, multi-trillion-dollar debt, unsustainable entitlements, permanent long-term unemployment, and the looming January 1 “fiscal cliff.” But Democrats know that, if Romney gets his way, there’ll be nothing at the bottom of the fiscal cliff to break your fall except binders. In RomneyWorld, when the mullahs drop the big Iranian nuke, there’ll be nothing crawling out from the irradiated rubble except cockroaches and binders — or some hideous mutation of the two: bindroaches, vile creatures prowling the land on three pairs of jointed rings ready to snap shut on your daughters’ ankles as they attempt to access the last Planned Parenthood clinic in America…

Some years ago, the then–French defense minister, Jean-Pierre Chevènement, complained that the Americans were committed to “the organized cretinization of our people.” I’ve never accepted the thesis, but I have to say that, in the final weeks of his reelection campaign, the first man in history to spend $6 trillion and leave no trace is doing a magnificent job of cretinizing his own base. In the binders of history, this one will be worth its own tab.

***

Eileen touched her friend’s arm. “Most women I know, whether they’re for Obama or Romney, they feel the same thing,” she said. “[Abortion is] a distraction. That whole Gloria Steinem thing is old.”…

Romney’s “binders full of women” line, an awkward phrasing that inspired reams of mockery on the Internet, wasn’t changing any minds among the women I spoke to. Democratic partisans saw it as more evidence Romney was out of touch; Republican partisans saw it as of a piece with his business background. “Anyone who’s ever been a professional, ever, knows that’s how you get resumes: in a binder,”43-year-old Republican stay-at-home mother Michele Moss said, rolling her eyes. Only someone who’d never been in the business world — like Obama — would fail to understand that.

The “binders” line didn’t register at all among the undecided women.

***

Via Gallup.

***

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) delivered a withering assault on President Barack Obama on Sunday, asserting that the president hasn’t laid out a concrete agenda for a second term and is instead making up catch phrases like “Romnesia.”

“That fires up his base, people who are going to vote for him anyway,” Rubio said on ABC’s “This Week.” “But for the rest of Americans who are trying to make up their mind who to vote for, what they’re wondering is, ‘Well, that’s very cute Mr. President, but what are you going to do for the future?’”

If we’re so irrelevant, why did you libs feel need to stop us?

You’re comical, you know that? You say we’re an insignificant minority that is so powerful we need to be stopped. No one listens to us, but we need to be silenced.

there is something very sick in you liberals. And YOU in particular.

You despise us, think we’re worthless nothings. Well, then — why do you keep coming here to annoy the Conservatives here? If we’re nothing as you think of us, then why bother? Or is it that you invade our quiet space just to be annoying?

Either way, your own presence and actions here say more about YOU than they do about us.

Government hackers are fine tuning ways to make it look like Obama called Benghazi a terrorist attack the first time he talked to the American people.

There’s a lot of internet out there that says otherwise, collateral damage is probable.

If they blew the whistle on what was happening and O ended up winning the election anyway, then they’re in deep trouble for having tried, but failed, to derail their boss’s chance at history. Not a happy place to be if you’re a time-serving tax apparatchik. So they kept quiet to stay on Obama’s good side. If that’s what happened, it tells you a lot about what they think of their superiors’ capacity for politically-motivated retaliation.
– AP

This is perhaps the most amazing bit of leaps of logic I’ve ever read.
I mean, a good and fun read…but talk about the creative mind.
What color shirt do you imagine this whistle blower wearing?
Let’s call him ‘Sal’.
Does Sal have kids?
I’m thinking one…who doesn’t speak to him anymore.
No…wait, 2 kids. Twins.
Sal works hard. But everyday he agonizes over his participation in the evils of tyrannical government.
Then one day, Sal comes upon an email…from a superior…that he was not meant to read.

They’re in the tank, and they’re invested in their own careers. NO conflict.

If Conservatives and the Tea Party had ridden 2010 success to 2012 defeat for Obama, the IRS would have been significantly reduced in size and power. On the other hand, if Obama prevailed, ObamaCare meant huge expansion of size and power for the IRS to the direct benefit of those in charge.

They understood who posed the threat. They perverted the agency’s monstrous power to their mutual agendas with Obama.

You’re free to think that, and perhaps you’re all worked up and defensive because of a strong personal connection to and involvement with the movement.

Schadenfreude on May 17, 2013 at 3:28 PM

There was visible smoke, but no one from the agency itself would confirm the existence of a fire until last week. Why?

A weekend takeaway for you, AP

Three scandals prioritized by media interest:

1) The AP secret wiretapping – THIS is the barnburner … THIS is the outrage of outrages … THIS is only the first snowflake of a potential blizzard of government wiretapping done to facilitate intimidation of ANY criticism of the SCOAMF administration. The SCOAMF administration used the Patriot Act as a departure point for tripling the warrantless surveillance of Americans (remember the ACLU lawsuit?) – that adds up to a mega-crapton more than 20 AP employees. The MSM has this as it’s first priority because they are up to their necks in the next two. The MSM would, at this point, LOVE to sacrifice the SCOAMF and all around him … so their part in Washington corruption gets ignored.

2) The IRS acting as the Kneebreakers – IF the MSM was doing their usual driven by the ratings dance, this should be their lead each and every night. EVERYONE can relate to it. EVERYONE hates the IRS. So why is the MSM shuffling away? Hmmmmmmm, we’ve already had Pro Publica admit they were given opposition research information from confidential IRS files. Does ANYONE think that two bit advocacy group was the ONLY beneficiary? Last week, Carney took 14 “reliable” MSM companies aside for a “background brief” and set off an earthquake of his own. If the IRS is funneling information to Pro Publica – the IRS was funneling information hand over fist to AT LEAST the 14 “reliable” MSM companies. How desperate would you be, if you had been receiving Americans confidential IRS information, to do EVERYTHING you could to keep from having that tidbit leak out?

3) The Benghazi Clusterfark – The MSM went after Romney like a rabid wolverine for making the EXACT same statement made later in the newscycle by the SCOAMF administration. Why? … Maybe they already had a background brief summarized as follows; “The President had a terrible night last night. Though it tore his guts out, he made the tough choice to let the people in Benghazi stand or fall on their own. There were too many Libyan civilians mixed in with the terrorists. If we had sent resources in we would have had a lot of civilian collateral deaths. We would also have permanently lost the ability to try to shape Libya’s political structure. Some of you are aware we have a large CIA operation ongoing to recover Libyan Stinger missiles. Killing innoent civilians would have derailed that mission which is critical to avoiding these weapons showing up here in the U.S.. We are asking each of your organizations to help us shape this story to protect the national security and prevent a clear and present danger from reaching our shores.”

The problem with acting in direct coordination with the government is any MSM outlet that does what they are TOLD to do has permanently lost ALL credibility that it will act impartially from that point on. Which brings us to the fourth scandal:

4) The MSM as Propaganda Merchants – Mull this one over during the weekend. Consider the implications and ramifications of THIS scandal making its way into the public conciousness. NOTE: Benghazi is NOT the first time the MSM has been co-opted into being the Propaganda Merchants. They were originally co-opted in early March 2009 when they were told, “If we don’t stop the markets slide NOW by changing public perception and confidence; well, I guess we will still see each other in the soup lines.”

At the first Congressional hearing into the I.R.S. scandal, J. Russell George, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration, told members of the House Ways and Means Committee that he informed the Treasury’s general counsel of his investigation on June 4, and Deputy Treasury Secretary Neal Wolin “shortly thereafter.” The new information came as part of a routine briefing of the investigations that the inspector general would be conducting in the coming year, and he did not tell the officials of his conclusions that the targeting had been improper, he said.

So that Wolin & Co. knew that they only had to keep everybody quiet for 5 months, and then everything would be hunky-dory.

What if the IG had NOT told anyone at Treasury he would be conducting an investigation, and would be able to find his information more quickly and issue a report in, say, October 2012?

It’s time for all good citizens to do a drive-by at their local IRS office.
Take a sack of garbage/dog doo/cat poop, whatever floats your boat, and drop it off on their front porch. Be careful of the cameras.
Or you could apply the poop to your shoe just before entering to ask for a tax form.
They are very familiar with the garbage in the WH so I’m sure they will appreciate the donations….the rat bastids.

As far are “irrelevant” – you have no idea what you are talking about. The media refused to cover the tea party movement, then started to cover it claiming it was all racist and now try and claim it is irrelevant.

As usual, you have not logic, facts or honesty of which to speak. It is sad that lefties like you can’t bother to have a real discussion about anything. “We still don’t know for sure what the President knew or when he knew it, but this does confirm that the Administration was aware of the fact that Obama’s political enemies were under fire by the IRS and covered that fact up during an election year.

As Lisa Meyers of NBC News told “Morning Joe” today, “Imagine if we — if you can — what would have happened if this fact came out in September 2012, in the middle of a presidential election? The terrain would have looked very different.”

The first time President Obama was asked when he found out about the IRS scandal, he told the media that he learned of the news last Friday, the same way the rest of us did — from the news media.

Thursday, a Bloomberg reporter asked the President when both he or anyone in the White House learned of the scandal. The President dodged the question.

With this latest news confirming when the Administration first learned of the IRS scandal, we now know that, along with Benghazi and the unfurling Associated Press scandal, that there were three scandals brewing and unfolding in the White House during an election year. But we are only now hearing about them — six months after Barack Obama is safely re-elected.

This fact says as much about the failure of our lapdog national media as it does about President Obama. Why just this morning the Times itself dismissed the IRS scandal on its editorial page…”

you know all these questions the IRs asked why in the name of all that’s holy didn’t the people just tell the IRs to pound sand? Have we become that much of sheep blindly following “government offical requests’?

there seemed to be very little push back. You must push back on government give them an inch and they take a mile. Just like the lockdown in Boston during the manhunt. The people didn’t pushback when their 4th amendment rights were destoryed so guess what? next time the government will never even think of the 4th amendment.

unseen on May 17, 2013 at 5:12 PM

The IRS scandal has two parts. The first is the obviously deliberate and targeted abuse, harassment and attempted suppression of conservative groups. The second is the auditing of the taxes of political activists.

In order to suppress conservative groups—at first those with words like “Tea Party” and “Patriot” in their names, then including those that opposed ObamaCare or advanced the second amendment—the IRS demanded donor rolls, membership lists, data on all contributions, names of volunteers, the contents of all speeches made by members, Facebook FB +0.46%posts, minutes of all meetings, and copies of all materials handed out at gatherings. Among its questions: What are you thinking about? Did you ever think of running for office? Do you ever contact political figures? What are you reading? One group sent what it was reading: the U.S. Constitution.

The second part of the scandal is the auditing of political activists who have opposed the administration. The Journal’s Kim Strassel reported an Idaho businessman named Frank VanderSloot, who’d donated more than a million dollars to groups supporting Mitt Romney. He found himself last June, for the first time in 30 years, the target of IRS auditors. His wife and his business were also soon audited. Hal Scherz, a Georgia physician, also came to the government’s attention. He told ABC News: “It is odd that nothing changed on my tax return and I was never audited until I publicly criticized ObamaCare.” Franklin Graham, son of Billy, told Politico he believes his father was targeted. A conservative Catholic academic who has written for these pages faced questions about her meager freelance writing income. Many of these stories will come out, but not as many as there are. People are not only afraid of being audited, they’re afraid of saying they were audited.

All of these IRS actions took place in the years leading up to the 2012 election. They constitute the use of governmental power to intrude on the privacy and shackle the political freedom of American citizens. The purpose, obviously, was to overwhelm and intimidate—to kill the opposition, question by question and audit by audit.

It is not even remotely possible that all this was an accident, a mistake. Again, only conservative groups were targeted, not liberal. It is not even remotely possible that only one IRS office was involved. Lois Lerner, who oversees tax-exempt groups for the IRS, was the person who finally acknowledged, under pressure of a looming investigative report, some of what the IRS was doing. She told reporters the actions were the work of “frontline people” in Cincinnati. But other offices were involved,

The IRS has always been political. A long time ago, when I was getting my new business going, a competitor, democrapt, got the IRS to audit me five times. By the end of the fifty audit, they found out they owed me $156. He also got the state to audit me, but they took one look and backed off. The NE Oklahoma IRS office was so corrupt, that they had the highest lien rate in the country.

itsspideyman on May 17, 2013 at 9:49 PM

My OPINION:

They kept it quiet because it was actually expanded into a DNC or OFA opposition research operation operating under “color of law” using the IRS and if that came out, it would damage more than just Obama, it would damage the entire Democratic Party.

My guess is that a copy of the data that IRS office was collecting was being sent to the DNC or to OFA. This was likely being directed from outside of the IRS/Treasury but with the knowledge of the bureaucrats. In other words, it was a political operation covered by senior administration people. That would explain why nobody seems to know anything about it. If it actually becomes exposed, they are in huge trouble and the Democratic Party might be thrown out of office en mass at all levels of government.

crosspatch on May 17, 2013 at 10:36 PM

Everyone admits that the events happened, but nobody knows where the orders came from to do it. Nobody knows who drew up the questionnaires, nobody knows who supplied the detailed lists of additional information that was required, nobody knows anything at all except they were doing it.

Three senior IRS people lied to Congress after they knew about it, after they knew the IG was investigating and apparently after they knew Treasury knew.

The administration claims to know nothing about it nearly a year after Treasury was notified. Nobody knows anything. That is because this wasn’t some rogue underlings. There’s a greater darkness here.

crosspatch on May 17, 2013 at 10:41 PM

How about this as a compromise? Suspend all left-wing tax-exempt status until those organizations complete comparable paperwork.

For example, OFA should be required to submit a list of everyone they have contacted or will contact in the future, under penalty of perjury. Plus, if they have any web pages that are accessible only to members or employees, copies of those pages need to be submitted and made part of the public record.

Failure to comply means that tax-exempt status will be retroactively revoked, and every single person that deducted a donation on their taxes WILL be audited.

Sound fair?

malclave on May 17, 2013 at 11:28 PM

I’m a bit disappointed that the Congress decided to do a hearing so quickly. I would have wanted them to do a little more investigation and get the lower level employees they are blaming under oath and ask them specifically who told them to conduct the audits this way. How did the questionnaires come about? Who decided on follow-on questions?

I don’t believe that they would ask any progressive groups what the content of their prayers were.

Dated 5/17/12 — But we already knew this, didn’t we?

The Department of Homeland Security, which under Secretary Janet Napolitano has shown a keen interest in monitoring and warning about outspoken conservatives, takes a very different approach in monitoring political Islamists, according to a 2011 memo on protecting the free speech rights of pro-Shariah Muslim supremacists.

In a checklist obtained by The Daily Caller entitled “Countering Violent Extremism Dos and Don’ts” the DHS’s Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties notifies local and national law enforcement officials that it is Obama administration policy to consider specifically Islamic criticism of the American system of government legitimate.

This policy stands in stark contrast to the DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis’ 2009 memo “Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment” [pdf], which warned of the dangers posed by pro-life advocates, critics of same-sex marriage and groups concerned with abiding by the U.S. Constitution, among others.

The advice of the Dos and Don’ts list is far more conciliatory. “Don’t use training that equates radical thought, religious expression, freedom to protest, or other constitutionally-protected activity, including disliking the U.S. government without being violent,” the manual’s authors write in a section on training being “sensitive to constitutional values.”

In the scandal cases especially, almost every attempt at spin by the administration has been countered by a succeeding revelation.

Today I commented to a friend that perhaps we were seeing a bit of Divine intervention, because what are the odds that the woman, Ingram, who ran the IRS department during most of the targeting, is now in charge of the division overseeing the AFC? As a result, we will have more ‘ammo’ for eliminating OCare altogether – as no one will trust the IRS (and particularly her) to enforce it without legal and ethical improprieties.

We are witnessing the house of cards fall; the dominoes are beginning to cascade. The implosion has begun. None too soon.
