Stevens warned State Dep’t on day he died about deterioriating security in Benghazi

posted at 5:21 pm on October 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

Not just on the day he died, mind you. Multiple times before, too. I’m near the point now where I want to abandon the whole “pre-planned attack versus spontaneous protest” line of inquiry just because it’s steering us away from the more important topic of State’s negligence on his security. Besides, we already know, more or less, why Carney and Rice pushed the “spontaneous protest” theory. Ask Saxby Chambliss:

“Talking points distributed by the administration [in the immediate aftermath] are nearly identical to intelligence assessments within hours of the attack, except in one important way: the intelligence judgment that the attackers had ties to al-Qa’ida was excluded from the public points,” [Saxby] Chambliss said in a statement on Friday.

“The administration omitted the known links to al-Qa’ida at almost every opportunity … Whether this was an intentional effort by the administration to downplay the role of terrorist groups, especially al-Qa’ida, is one of the many issues the Senate Intelligence Committee must examine,” Chambliss said.

The guy who got Bin Laden and knocked out Qaddafi didn’t need a storyline in the middle of a campaign about AQ affiliates killing the American ambassador in the heart of the “new Libya.” That’s straightforward, and that’s almost certainly why the “spontaneous protest” theory got traction initially. (“Al Qaeda is on the run” used to be part of Obama’s standard stump speech, in fact. That line has been quietly dropped lately.) What’s not straightforward is why State refused to boost Stevens’s security despite countless warnings about the danger, some from the man himself. It’s inexplicable. It’s not a budget issue, either: Charlene Lamb testified to that before the House. She also testified that State had “the correct number of assets in Benghazi,” which literally no one but her seems to believe is true. So, once again: Why didn’t Stevens have more security? What were they waiting for before making a decision to either send him a more professional force or end the American presence in Benghazi? Was that politicized too, i.e. State didn’t want abandon the consulate over security fears because that would have made for some bad headlines about conditions inside the “new Libya”?

On Sept. 11 — the day Stevens and three other Americans were killed — the ambassador signed a three-page cable, labeled “sensitive,” in which he noted “growing problems with security” in Benghazi and “growing frustration” on the part of local residents with Libyan police and security forces. These forces the ambassador characterized as “too weak to keep the country secure.”…

Roughly a month earlier, Stevens had signed a two-page cable, also labeled “sensitive,” that he entitled “The Guns of August: Security in Eastern Libya.” Writing on Aug. 8, the ambassador noted that in just a few months’ time, “Benghazi has moved from trepidation to euphoria and back as a series of violent incidents has dominated the political landscape.” He added, “The individual incidents have been organized,” a function of “the security vacuum that a diverse group of independent actors are exploiting for their own purposes.”

“Islamist extremists are able to attack the Red Cross with relative impunity,” Stevens cabled. “What we have seen are not random crimes of opportunity, but rather targeted and discriminate attacks.” His final comment on the two-page document was: “Attackers are unlikely to be deterred until authorities are at least as capable.”…

“Islamic extremism appears to be on the rise in eastern Libya,” the ambassador wrote [on June 25], adding that “the Al-Qaeda flag has been spotted several times flying over government buildings and training facilities …”

Libyan guards at the consulate also thought security was too thin to meet the challenge from local mujahedeen, but were reportedly told by the Americans they spoke to that everything was cool and that no one would dare approach the consulate — even though, as noted above, even the Red Cross wasn’t spared from attack. (That may have been part of a jihadi strategy to push all western outfits out of the city.) I’d sure like to know which Americans said that; based on his increasingly dire reports to the State Department, it doesn’t sound like Stevens was one of them.

I’ll leave you with this. Funny how Susan Rice is capable of detecting a terrorist attack right away in some cases. Is she sure that Beirut bombing this morning wasn’t a reaction to the Mohammed movie?

4 brave dead Americans were nothing more than props so that this president and his party can cling to power. Another American languishes in jail as a political prisoner so we can placate those who seek our subjugation and destruction.

The last 4 years have been one outrage after another, almost on a daily basis. But this is just utterly, totally despicable. And then there was Fast and Furious.

This is amazing and should result in impeachment- we can take care of that on Nov 6. Stephens was literally begging for security and was told repeatedly to go pound salt. I am sad for my country today. A huge mistake was made in 2008 and we are paying a severe price for it.

You know what – before this tragedy I did not much about Mr. Stevens – I had heard about his dedication – that’s about it.

But when an American – who seemingly is truly kind and giving – is murdered – my heart is torn for his life – his family grievance – and our nation losing a dedicated man.

Lost is all this, as it becomes politics – is the man – the men that were lost.

I tear up just thinking about it.

Kaddafi allowed the local AlQaida leader to go free from jail not long after he had been returned to Libya after release from Gitmo. He let those people sit up housekeeping, the same way Zarqawi was allowed to create a base camp in Iraq.

The US had to know that. I do not feel bad about Kaddafi being taken out..the man had it coming, but there should have been more care taken of what came after. We just left Afghanistan after the Soviets fell..and look what happened there. But at least Reagan did not send any ambassadors over there to get killed. This is just crazy.

I cannot forget the now famous pics [warning gruesome one two three} of the IMHO lifeless ambassador being hoisted thought the crowd, his mouth in bad shape, and his abdomen looking like it took a beating. It is suggested the face has the appearance common to strangulation, not asphyxiation

Was that politicized too, i.e. State didn’t want abandon the consulate over security fears because that would have made for some bad headlines about conditions inside the “new Libya”?

What other reason could there be? It is not as if the consulate was performing critical duties. It was there to prove that Libya was another Obama success

IMHO he is dead because there was an election

His death has to sit hard on the various intel who warned of the dangers. What a waste. And so cruel

The poor fellow did not die easy, but had pictures and video not been leaked by the enemy, IMHO there would have been a bigger coverup.

Notice, no details are being released on the deaths of the others

entagor on October 19, 2012 at 5:46 PM

State did not want a show of force around the embassy and consulate in Libya. That is why they hired a British company that could supply them with Libyan “guards”. Remember Dear Leader and Hillary saved this country and city form the Daffy’s crazy regime. They did not want a bunch of burly Americans suited up in plain sight of the locals. It might have offended them. Plus they didn’t want the CIA station to be too obvious.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline today, Pat Smith, whose son Sean died in the raid, said: ‘It was a disrespectful thing to say and I don’t think it’s right.

‘How can you say somebody being killed is not very optimal? I don’t think the President has the right idea of the English language.’

Speaking from her home in San Diego, Mrs Smith, 72, continued: ‘It’s insensitive to say my son is not very optimal – he is also very dead. I’ve not been “optimal” since he died and the past few weeks have been pure hell.

‘I am still waiting for the truth to come out and I still want to know the truth. I’m finally starting to get some answers but I won’t give up.

‘There’s a lot of stupid things that have been said about my son and what happened and this is another one of them.’

Obama’s whole campaign (down the stretch) was supposed to include his stellar foreign policy “reforms”. He was going to brag at his stump speeches about how he ended two wars, brought our troops home and oh, yeah, “I killed Osama, and al Qaeda is scattered to the wind ”. This “show of presidential strength” was supposed to take the place of his dismal domestic failures hitting everyone’s pocketbooks.

Now, his whole campaign is scrambling to find a way to put the Benghazi-no-terrorist attack-let’s-move-on, to rest with only weeks away from this election. My guess is Barack Obama’s advisors led our “puppet-in-chief” down this path of deception, and they all got caught with their pants-on-fire. Every one in Libya that has any power is dangerous. This never was a workable solution. What was Obama supposed to do? Do not act like there was a good solution. The only good solution was keep the old power in power as bad as he was. Far better than we have now.

We sign our death warrants when we depose these dictators that kept peace for two hundred years mostly. Now we are back to the days of Washington and the problems Libya caused us then. Only far worse as our enemies there now are uniting and posses nuclear arms (Pakistan).

It is this policy decision that is most obviously to blame for the disastrous blunder in Benghazi. The Q/A that I believe is most critically essential is who and what was behind this policy decision. I wonder why reporters, bloggers and politicos are not raising this line of Q/A.

Stevens’ mother s/b fighting for the truth, so that others may be safe and saved. Instead she says “he’s dead”.

The mother of Sean Smith talks to the UK’s Daily Mail, once again doing the job that the US press won’t do.

Poor woman. Just can’t imagine what she’s going through.

Once a Chicago politician, always a Chicago politician—the voters are all too stupid to understand the complexities of lying to an entire nation.

Rovin on October 19, 2012 at 5:55 PM

Your comment is a good one but my hunch is Chicago political operatives think the public is too stupid to understand. I bet the public’s focus is much more intense this time around.

I suspect the reason they did not increase security is because Obama thinks an enhanced American presence is what antagonizes terrorists. Remember, the left often blames terrorism on our being there.

Daemonocracy on October 19, 2012 at 5:40 PM

I believe this is it. Somewhere in the recesses of my cloudy brain I either read something about this or heard it.
Remember there had been a recent security analysis of the facilities and everything was appropriate for what the perceived threat..?

Hillary is such a disastrous SS, no surprise that her tenure ends with this; and if she disagreed with 0′s direction why did she become his SS? because it is her policies and worldview as well as his.

I think Obama needs to be tried for treason.

Amjean on October 19, 2012 at 5:32 PM

I know how you feel. I had to stop paying attention to the news for over a week after Obama made his recent speech at the UN saying the future must not belong to those that insult islam. It was just to horrible to witness that any president of this country could say something so absolutely awful. I’m still trying to just forget he said it. Is this what PTSD feels like?

Fox News is reporting now about the ship with a Libyan captain carrying humanitarian cargo and weapons to Syrian. Stevens may have been there to negotiate the weapons deal…

that’s really the nut we are seeking. Hillary claimed it was “security professionals” in her take the fall attempt and Susan Rice recently mentioned she was reporting what was provided her. Both are referencing specific personel. Fascinating no reporter is asking for names. They’ll claim executive priviledge for security reasons. I’d say it was directed by the political team.

Stevens connected to Syrian rebels?

Fast and Furious / Iran Contra combo.

the_nile on October 19, 2012 at 6:11 PM

I don’t know what is worse…being dead and having your body drug through the streets of a foreign country, by desperate terrorists about to lose their power…or being dead and having your name drug through a campaign by a desperate president about to lose his power.

I guess it doesn’t matter, they are both the same, with the same attitude.

And, I hope Romney takes Obama’s faux indignation regarding using dead heroes for political gain, and shoves it up his ignorant @ss…

right2bright on October 19, 2012 at 6:13 PM

Mitt should talk during the next debate about “Obama in blinders” (see what I did there?) in regards to American foreign policy. After Benghazi, al-Qaeda crowed about “poking out” America’s eyes.

justonevictory on October 19, 2012 at 6:14 PM

So it looks plausible, possible, and somewhat likely that there was more going on than meets the eye?

Stevens may have been there to negotiate the return of weapons we had provided during the “civil war”, so they could be turned over to Syrian rebels? Also included were some of Quackadaffy’s SAMs to be turned over to Syrian rebels?

Libyan rebels and Syrian rebels being somewhat affiliated with Al-Queda, this might be a problem.

Might be a whole lot of poo to hit the fans soon.
