Video: Romney roasts Obama at the Al Smith Dinner

posted at 10:01 pm on October 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via Mediaite, I haven’t watched the clip yet but I’m told Mitt killed. In fact, judging from the introductions, sounds like everyone killed:

When you’re done laughing, go read this. Another bunch of 2008 Obama supporters turns red. Exit quotation from O, describing Tingles’s reaction to the first debate: “I want to apologize to Chris Matthews. The first time I gave him a thrill up his leg, this time I gave him a stroke.”

Not so. Obama was, again, godawful. Laughing at his own jokes every single time.

The Matthews line was the single joke he delivered properly.

Romney was awesome. He roasted Obama big time and even obama’s best jokes were about how he got killed in the first debate.

Romney was awesome with 0bama jokes, Biden jokes and self-deprecating jokes. About the tux, “this is how Ann and I dress around the house” was a good line.

Brat on October 18, 2012 at 10:10 PM

Romney killed when he said how he understood the media and how they’d report the event: “President Obama Reaches out to Catholics, while Romney had Dinner with Rich People.” Took the house down.

Romney’s straight faced delivery, is spot on! Who knew he was so funny? “Tonight’s Dinner Was Brought to you By The Letter “O” and the number 16Trillion”. A lot of good lines, delivered there. My Favorite though, had to be, That “His(Romney) job was to lay out a plan for the future of America and the media’s job was to make sure no one heard about it”.

chumpThreads on October 18, 2012 at 10:12 PM

I also thought that was Obama’s best line, in a way:

“You know my opponent goes by his middle name, Mitt. I wish I could use my middle name.”

It was self-deprecating and thus funny, but also had a subtle tell to his base, no doubt one well intended.

TXUS on October 18, 2012 at 10:18 PM

Katy nailed it. Romney’s jokes were professionally written, funny and mostly self-deprecating, which is what this Catholic Charities event is all about.

Moreover, Mitt had some excellent zingers at Obama, which hopefully undermined Obama’s ego. Kennedy did the same thing to Nixon in 1960 and really got inside Nixon’s head.

Go and read it. They endorsed the King in 2008 and Kerry in 2004.

It’s a brutal indictment on King Obama.

JPeterman on October 18, 2012 at 10:20 PM

Obama’s defenders would argue that he inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression, and would have made more progress if not for obstruction from Republicans in Congress. But Democrats held strong majorities in the House and Senate during his first two years.

Other presidents have succeeded even with the other party controlling Capitol Hill. Democrat Bill Clinton presided over an economic boom and balanced the budget working with Republicans. Leaders find a way.

That’ll leave a mark.

I love how Romney subtley slammed The Mooche by insinuating she won’t stand with Barackabama. I loved it.

d1carter on October 18, 2012 at 10:23 PM

Romney dominated and killed tonight, with his direct digs at Obama, subtly and comedically delivered. He’s got some good writers here, but his delivery was damn near perfect. Won’t make a difference in the vote, this event never does, but it sent a message to the beltway class and traitor-media that they are seeing their new President.

I’ll agree with you somewhat on this much: I too thought the humor would be more self-deprecating. However, I think Romney and crew used this unique opportunity perfectly. R’s pitch and timing were excellent, the jokes were top notch (better than what I heard at our local comedy club recently,) and the zingers were designed to get under President Thin-Skinned’s epidermis. Boy oh boy did they ever! O’s forehead was shiny—he was sweating.
