Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on October 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

We like to complain about empty campaign promises from politicians, but few are literally empty, as in no possibility of ever being honored or met.  Barack Obama came close in Tuesday’s debate to making one, however, as he pledged to keep federal dollars flowing to Planned Parenthood so that millions of women can get mammograms, in addition to other services.  “There are millions of women all across the country,” Obama intoned in attacking Mitt Romney for opposing federal subsidies to the nation’s largest chain of abortion clinics, “who rely on Planned Parenthood for mammograms, for cervical cancer screenings.”

Actually, they don’t perform mammograms — and even one of their biggest donors admitted it earlier this year:

Planned Parenthood itself has admitted that it does not perform mammograms for women — something the Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity confirmed last year.

LifeNews.com and pro-life blogger Jill Stanek followed up with phone calls to various Planned Parenthood centers and confirmed they do not do mammograms.

Then, the organization Live Action released videotaped footage of calls to 30 Planned Parenthood centers nationwide in 27 different states where abortion facility staff were asked whether or not mammograms could be performed on site. Every one of the Planned Parenthood centers admitted they could not do mammograms. Every Planned Parenthood, without exception, tells the women calling that they will have to go elsewhere for a mammogram, and many clinics admit that no Planned Parenthood clinics provide this breast cancer screening procedure.

“We don’t provide those services whatsoever,” admits a staffer at Planned Parenthood of Arizona while a staffer at Planned Parenthood’s Comprehensive Health Center clinic in Overland Park, Kansas tells a caller, “We actually don’t have a, um, mammogram machine, at our clinics.”

Just for good measure, NRO’s Eliana Johnson recreated the experiment, and came up with the same results:

But Planned Parenthood, with few exceptions, does not provide mammograms. To test the president’s statement in the real world, I called several Planned Parenthood offices in the New York City area today to ask about scheduling a mammogram. “We actually don’t offer that here,” one office told me. “You might want to call 311, they actually have lists of places you could go to.” When I asked, “You don’t provide them like the president said?,” I was told “No.”

Another office told me the following: “We don’t do mammograms, but I could definitely give you other places you could call.” When I mentioned the president’s statement, the woman said, “I’m not even sure because we’ve never offered mammograms.” Of the five offices I called, only the Hempstead, N.Y., location said it offered the service — on Fridays and not by an in-house technician.

Now, one could argue that this is unfair.  After all, Eliana and Lila Rose actually called and checked before positing a false statement as fact. Maybe Obama should exercise a little more of that kind of executive oversight on the use of those federal subsidies, huh?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

So Odamna got his facts wrong again.

This surprises us why?

The surprise would be if he said something relevant, accurate, or true.

Hey Ed, get with the program. After 4 years, surely you know that Obama’s feelings are more important than any actual facts, right?

jwolf on October 18, 2012 at 8:10 AM

Stuff like mammograms would get in the way of the PP cash cow- killing life. And I think it is wrong that this organization can get away with the outright lie that federal funding is not being used to murder.

Happy Nomad on October 18, 2012 at 8:13 AM

Barry telling lies is news? Was there ever a modicum of truth in the life and career of Barry?

ss396 on October 18, 2012 at 8:20 AM

I was disappointed that Mitt, after naming PP as an organization he’d cut federal funding to, didn’t come back with a slam fact like this. But I guess we’d be hearing about more than binders if he had, so desperate were they to fuel the war on women meme.

Obama’s enemy is facts, so this doesn’t hurt him in the least, because these facts don’t get wide exposure anyway.

Even as an OOTD, this is just so…average for him.

CitizenEgg on October 18, 2012 at 8:22 AM

I heard Obama on the radio this morning giving a stump speech and complaining that Romney has not commented on the Lily Ledbetter act, as if that is an issue anyone cares about. Its a redundant law that highilights the inefficient nature of Washington. Lawmaking that creates laws for secial groups. Why should Romney comment about a law written for tort lawyers?

Night Owl on October 18, 2012 at 8:32 AM

Binders apparently came from Romney’s story of how, when he was looking to hire cabinet members was not presented with any female candidates. He then reached out to women’s organizations and they came back with binders of resumes of qualified candidates, ie Binders of women. Binders apparently triggered the reptilian portion of the liberal brain and they’ve been running with that like some adolescent schoolboys who’ve just found the bra section of the Sears catalogue.

I know it doesn’t make sense, but that’s how badly Obama performed I guess, that they’ve made it about another small thing.

He only has one mode of operation of Healthcare and that is to tell huge whoppers.

If you like your health plan you can keep your health plan
Obamacare will insure the 350 billion uninsured Americans
Doctors make money and have fun by amputating peoples legs
Obamacare will lower the deficit
Republicans want to kill old people
Planned Parenthood does mammograms

And on and on and on.

Remember, these are the same adolescents who snickered and giggled on national television as they used the term “teabaggers” (and its super-sexual secret connotation, giggle, snort) and that included some of the “most respected” names in journalism.

Obama’s petulance, his “That’s not what we do. That’s not what I do as president, not what I do as commander-in-chief” contrived anger as well…all that finder wagging…another Dem tried that, too…did not have sex and all that. There’d be no Libya problem had Obama not decided to engage in an illegal war and allow murdering fanatics to arm themselves, with us flying air cover, and establish Libya as a bastion for jihad. But that’s not what he does…as commander-in-chief…nope…not never…ever.

Putz.

Back to the binders…

Well, if you can’t beat them on the level playing field…use Alinsky…mock, ridicule, get the focus on the other guy so nobody sees your own flaws and missteps…still using Rules for Radicals, even at this late stage of the game.

Thanks, that was every bit as stupid as I imagined it would be! They must really think everyone’s life is as devoid of meaning as theirs to think this is an actual campaign issue. It must take a person who is already on the verge of a breakdown to give this any thought at all.

Slade73 on October 18, 2012 at 9:05 AM

When Barry made the statement about mammograms, I turned to my husband and said “That is a bullsh!t lie.” Romney should play that clip over and over with the tag line “Aside from abortions, Obama has no idea what PP does. Do you trust him with your health?”

Xyz22 on October 18, 2012 at 9:06 AM

And, the boss emeritus weighs in on the Hollywood /Administration hypocrisy:

… {Obamacare}means dropping coverage for the very services Scar-Jo and her femme friends are accusing the GOP of threatening.
Note: The USPSTF is the same review panel that advised cutting back on routine ovarian cancer screenings last month, recommended fewer prostate cancer screening tests in May 2012, and proposed mammogram restrictions in 2009.
In fact, the Mayo Clinic reported this summer that mammogram screenings for women in their 40s have declined nearly 6 percent since the Obama panel announced its decision in 2009. “Comparing mammography rates before and after publication of the new guidelines,” the Mayo Clinic wrote, “researchers found that the recommendations were associated with a 5.72 percent decrease in the mammography rate for women ages 40-49. Over a year, nearly 54,000 fewer mammograms were performed in this age group.”

So, if funding PPs fantasy mammograms are so important, why recommend cutting back the tests? The funding is clearly required to oil the abortion mills used to effect Sanger’s eugenics.

socalcon on October 18, 2012 at 9:06 AM

Speaking of new, initial unemployment claims, can anyone in HA land explain to me how we can AVERAGE between 350,000 and 400,000 NEW, INITIAL unemployment claims each and every week. Doesn’t that mean that between 350,000 and 400,000 people recently lost their jobs? Lets do the math (I know math is hard for those liberals in the audience). Lets say an average of 375,000 NEW, INITIAL claims times 52 weeks. Thats 19,500,000 NEW, INITIAL claims in the past year. Are they telling us that 19,500,000 people lost their jobs in the past year (I know there are some duplications in there, but shouldn’t be more than a million or two). So, during the Obama term of office, there have been about 80,000,000 NEW, INITIAL unemployment claims. I know the economy is horrible, but 80,000,000? That just isn’t possible. Anyone have an explanation?

There’s two kinds of men, one who respects you and cares about your future and the other one who uses you for his own gratification and doesn’t want to face any inconvenient consequences of his actions.

It doesn’t matter to the Left. They will say that PP offers guidance for mammograms, so therefore they should get all the funding they need, even if they don’t actually do anything. Then they turn around and claim that PP doesn’t actually DO abortions, they just advice and offer assistance. But the facilities on site are for abortions, they just play the shell game by saying that the doctors who perform the procedures are not employed by PP. Yet the doctors get paid via the PP funding.

Lies on top of lies, and the Left eats it with sugar on top.

It was originally TFGP, for The First Gay President, after Obama pivoted in favor of SSM.
