Wrap up: The second debate; Update: Obama wins CBS insta-poll narrowly, but Romney wins big on economy; Update: Actually, Romney had a point, says Crowley

posted at 11:19 pm on October 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

The consensus among the righties that I follow on Twitter is that it was a push, with Romney acing his answer on the economy and underperforming when he finally took on The One on Libya. Better that than vice versa, though: As Ben Domenech said, only one of those is an issue that people will vote on.

There were several key exchanges — the staredown on energy, Romney politely distancing himself from Bush — but I’m giving you the economy and Libya answers below, via the Examiner and Daily Caller, respectively. Romney seemed unprepared for the pushback from Obama and his pal Candy on what he said about “acts of terror” in the Rose Garden on September 12; The One now wants us to believe that he was forthright about calling it a terrorist attack all along, when in fact he was so coy and evasive that Jay Carney had to clarify his view for the press more than two weeks later. Romney didn’t chase him on that or on all the other nonsense in the aftermath — blaming a “spontaneous protest” when even the earliest intel suggested a terror attack, running ads in Pakistan groveling over a private citizen’s insult to Mohammed, the snowballing revelations about just how indifferent State was to Chris Stevens’s security, etc. O even got to play the part of the indignant C-in-C, declaring how offended he was that anyone would accuse him of playing politics with this issue when, in fact, he’s been playing politics with it since day one. And of course, just as I expected, he finally took meaningless symbolic responsibility for the Benghazi security failure now that Hillary had covered his ass by taking responsibility herself last night.

The good news? Mitt gets another crack at the Libya attack in the next debate, which will focus exclusively on foreign policy. He’ll be very well prepared, rest assured. And since most of the media’s coverage tomorrow will focus on the Libya exchange tonight, that issue will continue to get plenty of coverage for the rest of the week. I can live with that. Exit quotation from Ben Smith: “Romney did, again, come away looking like a guy who could be president, which is probably the most important thing.” Yep.

Update: Here’s something else I can live with:

I’d much, much rather have had Romney make a strong impression on the economy than “win” overall with barely more than a one-third plurality. If you think undecideds are going to go into the booth in November and think hard about jobs, then these are the numbers you want to see.

Update: Like I said up top:

After that generic reference to “acts of terror” in the Rose Garden — which was so generic that the media forgot all about it for weeks afterward — the White House strained very hard not to call this a terror attack. They desperately wanted it to be a protest that got out of hand, all thanks to that Mohammed movie. If it’s a terror attack, then the administration has to explain why they didn’t see it coming and why The Man Who Got Bin Laden somehow let his ambassador’s compound be overrun by an Al Qaeda affiliate. Which narrative is better if you’re running a reelection campaign?

Update: I didn’t see it, but the word on Twitter is that Frank Luntz’s focus group tonight on Fox was simply brutal to Obama.

Update: I’m hearing now that Anderson Cooper challenged Crowley’s spin on the “acts of terror” comment on CNN’s post-debate show. Jay Cost is right, as usual:

Update: Note to David Axelrod: You sure you want to spend another media cycle or three on Libya?

Update: Via the Washington Free Beacon, here’s O conspicuously refusing to use the T-word to describe Benghazi — on September 25.

Update: NRO’s Patrick Brennan on why Obama’s “acts of terror” reference in the Rose Garden on September 12 wasn’t really a reference to Benghazi:

His only mention of “terror”:

“No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America.”

One could take that as a reference to acts which include the tragedy in Benghazi, obviously, but there was clearly no effort made to label it an act of terrorism. One reason why this might be: According to U.S. law, acts of terrorism are premeditated. The Obama administration’s line for days following Obama’s Rose Garden statement suggested that the attack wasn’t premeditated.

Update: Via the Examiner, now she tells us:

Upwards of 60 million people likely watched her side with Obama on Libya during the debate. How many saw this clip on CNN’s post-game show? One million, maybe?

Americans all know that Obama clearly blamed the video for two weeks. Obama is just going to hurt himself more and more if he keeps trying to use the “Rose Garden Speech.”

.
He wanted to diffuse the charge that he was mis- leading the American people- oh and he finds that offensive by the way…..I’m sure Brian Terry and Amb. Stevens do as we’ll……. Oh wait a minute……

Even worse…… A drive by Rose Garden Oration for 5-10 minutes before hopping on a plane to Vegas Baby is his idea of ” Presidential Concern” and Leadership – he is utterly clueless- and that’s truthfully an offensive Action by Ocommie.

I think txhsmom on October 17, 2012 at 1:17 AM had it right. Candy was ready to help Obama until she was put on the spot about it.

Then it was no honor among thieves, and she gave an evasive excuse for herself.

That tells me that she did it deliberately and wouldn’t have said a word about it except that she was questioned.

That makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?

Virtually everybody who voted for McCain did so not because they wanted him to be president but because they wanted Obama not to be. Ergo, they are not undecided this time around.

9:16: Obama, yelling, says it’s “offensive” to suggest that anyone on his “team” would “play politics.” “That’s not what we do,” he says, making eye contact with Romney, but then he breaks eye contact and looks down. Check the video on this. It’s a moment.

9:19: Romney, in command, questions Obama about what he said the day after the attack in the Rose Garden. “You said it was an act of terror?” Romney asks twice. After the first time, Obama says “That’s what I said.” After the second time, Romney gives him a penetrating look. There’s a pause. Romney raises his eyebrows in a way that seems to repeat the question again. “It was not a spontaneous demonstration? Is that what you’re saying?” Obama bows his head. His eyes are closed. Obama looks up and with a little smile says: “Please proceed Governor.” Romney gestures with his hand. “I wanted to make sure we get that for the record, because it took the President 14 days before he called the attack in Benghazi and act of terror.” Obama says “Get the transcript,” and Crowley helps Obama by saying “He did in fact, sir… He did in fact call it an act of terror. It did as well take 2 weeks or so for the whole idea of there being a riot out there about this tape to come out, you’re correct about that.” Jeez, Crowley is way overparticipating! And the audience applauds her!

Candy Crowley lecturing us and Romney about the right way to comment on Obama’s use of words in the Rose Garden after Benghazi when he still claimed many days later at the United Nations that it was the video that caused the deaths is just the height of what is today a lying, scheming, manipulative, verminous manistream media press core that acts like some gigantic Orwellian filter for us.

Why we have to put up with the Debate Commission and the moderators they pick is an absolute mystery and probably has ties to some CFR cabal.

The press from the very beginning of becoming a career field, late in the 18th century, was against our Constitution and unalienable rights and the free market. Most of the leaders then who got into journalism were disaffected seminarians or socialist, statist clergy who sought a different means to gain control, push socialism and distribute the wealth. Don’t believe it. Just read James Billington’s “Fire In The Minds of Men: Origins Of The Revolutionary Faith!”

Falcon46 on October 17, 2012 at 1:31 AM

This was a solid, strong win for Romney. The deck was stacked against him in every way possible. Obama was bound to get a “win” of sorts simply because he would improve upon his abysmal performance from last time. In addition, everyone knew Crowly was biased and would interject herself into the process in Obama’s favor. Also, the questions were to be ones she selected.

But Romney won big by focusing on issues really important to Americans: the failed promises of Obama, the deficit, the borrowing from China, the increased medical premium costs. These issues are far more important to average Americans than the Libyan issue.

Romney made his case confidently without looking fake or insincere or defensive. He looked presidential and presented clear and positive ideas for America. With the failed record that Obama offered in contrast, that really is all that’s necessary at this point.

After watching the Luntz group and hearing about the instapolls and after watching the debate, I have a hunch Romney’s surge is going to continue, just as it did after the Ryan-Biden debate which changed a lot of women’s minds. In other words, this debate did not stop the bleeding.

People in general don’t really care about the Libyan “coverup,” so that’s why Crowly’s distortions on that issue didn’t really matter. I don’t think this is a burning issue for undecideds in particular. Yes, I know Obama lied about this issue as he has so many others, but all of that is nothing new. I do think the original attack on the embassy itself undermines Obama’s boast to defeating Al Qaeda, but that’s secondary to most people now (It will be more important in the next debate on foreign policy.)

As an extra bonus tonight, it’s encouraging that the next day or two will be about how Crowly tried to throw the debate by interjecting her own fabrications for which she later had to apologize. It’s all good.

If you watch the video of the Rose Garden speech on Sept 12, the context of the reference to acts of terror may have been a reference to 9/11/2001…that is what he had been talking about just prior to that reference. This was not a declaration that the attack in Benghazi was a terrorist attack. He can’t have it both ways.

FlaMurph on October 17, 2012 at 1:38 AM

The Luntz focus group of “undecideds” was just as “undecided” as the debate audience was. Both groups were filled with plants.

gumbyandpokey on October 17, 2012 at 12:55 AM

Watch the video, pause it when he asks the hand-raising questions, and count the hands.

There were 23 people in the Nevada Luntz focus group.

16 of the 23 people raised their hand to indicate that they voted for Obama in 2008.

Only 6 of those 16 riased their hand again to indicate that they are still favoring Obama and will vote for Obama in 2012.

9 of those 16 raised their hand to indicate that they have switched their vote to Romney.

1 of those 16 (the guy in the white shirt on the back row, next to the girl on the far left) indicated that he voted for Obama in 2008, but didn’t raise his hand for either of the follow-up questions, so presumably he’s still undecided.

If that focus group is representative of the electorate as a whole, Obama can count on less than half of the support that he received in 2008.

The Rose Garden speech is a trap, for Obama. The quote that’s being “quoted” from the speech, either the prepared remarks or the transcript, comes AFTER his nibs had already talked about the video. He led with the video. Then rambled on about American resolve and all that. It’s clear, in context, that his “remarks” were entirely consistent with the false narrative that they continued to spin on, and on, and on.

With the next debate coming up on foreign policy, the Prez might have fired that supposed silver bullet (with Candy’s obviously prepared defense) too early. As someone said, now it’s a cover-up of a cover-up. Or, as Hillary calls it, the “fog of war” (meaning the campaign – the only place the fog is gathering)

Earlier:

“CNN is more conservative that even Faux News. Candy is a complete Republican stooge. The people in the audience will be plants and will be asking questions written for them by the Romney campaign.

Gallup, like PPP, is a Republican-leaning polling outfit funded by the Koch-sucking Brothers. This is even more so since Obama and Axelrod had Holder sue them. Gallup is intentionally doctoring the sample by adding more African-Americans and Hispanics, which is always going to lead to a more Romney favourable result.

Romney is NOT leading Obama by 4 nationally…and do NOT even get me started on Rasmussen – that, that Sheldon Adelson outfit. If Ras is claiming 4 for Romney, that means Obama will win 40000+ electoral votes.

He’s NOT leading in the swing states. Romney is NOT gaining in Pennsylvania. There will NOT be a landslide in ANY bitterclinger county in America much less the overwhelming majority.

Obama IS leading in Texas, Utah, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas by more than 20 points in each state.

You people are D-E-L-U-S-I-O-N-A-L!

By the way, did you see the new poll from Kim Jong-un POLLytech University? It has Obama up by 63 points nationally with a R +74. Oh, and the Castro-Guevara-Chavez Battleground Poll of the Swing States has Obama wiping Romney’s blood off the floor with a 75 point lead and has a sample of 2/3,798/468 (D/R/I).

workingclass artist on October 17, 2012 at 1:49 AM

I agree with Krauthammer’s analysis of debate #2, save for his belief that 0bama won on points.

Romney hit Barry hard on the economy and Obama’s failed economic policies, but there were points where Romney missed easy shots at Barry.

Most notably, I felt Romney botched his attempt to pin Barry down on his Rose Garden statement about Al Queda’s attack on the Benghazi consulate. I think Romney rehearsed that answer too well beforehand, and did not quite react to 0bama and Crowley going all Clintonian on the phrasing of Teh Won’s statement.

More generally, Dr. Krauthammer felt Romney was best when he “went large”, but faded when he tried to engage Barry on “small” points like what Soetoro said in his Rose Garden statement re. Benghazi. I agreed, but unlike Krauthammer I believe calling out Obama successfully on the failures of the last four years equals a win for Romney, albeit less decisive than that victory in the first debate.

Bmore on October 17, 2012 at 1:59 AM

Hey, Gumby, try not to trash too many more polls, networks, etc, that I have to add to your growing list of “Do Not Believe A Word Of What They Are Saying” has tripled since yesterday morning. All you are going to be left with is the poll deciding what the theme should be for Lennox Middle School and my post is going to consume the all available bandwidth.

Resist We Much on October 17, 2012 at 1:59 AM

In order to reverse his slide, Barry had to score a knock-out punch on Romney last night, and that he did not do. The internals in the CNN poll actually favor Romney. So nothing will significantly change in polling data. The third debate will come in 6 days.

Barry will wag the dog, before serving it up for dinner, by ordering a drone strike in Libya before the election.

bayview on October 17, 2012 at 1:59 AM

I didn’t watch any of the post-debate spin, did anyone in the media mention this?

Some are, but here’s how they’re covering it:

ROMNEY: Mr. President, have you looked at your pension?

OBAMA: You know, I — I don’t look at my pension. It’s not as big as yours so it doesn’t take as long.

They stop at that point, and call the exchange a point for Obama, lol.

Flora, did you see this? Something to tweet if it’s not already going around.

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/330700/libya-crowley-changes-her-tune-eliana-johnson

Johnson quoted Crowley’s interview of McCain on September 30. It doesn’t work with her Rose Garden intervention tonight.

CC to McCain:

Friday [Sept 28th], we got the administration’s sort of definitive statement that this now looks as though it was a pre-planned attack by a terrorist group, some of whom were at least sympathetic to Al-Qaeda. Why do you think, and are you bothered, that it has taken them so long to get to this conclusion?

She either didn’t prep for McCain or she conveniently decided to do so for the debate. Which is it and why?

INC on October 17, 2012 at 2:01 AM

Ah, but Mrs Bmore bakes my pies. Lol! I’m voting for Mrs. Bmore, that settles it. I wasn’t really all that excited to vote for Mitt anyhow. It was more a vote against 0? This will be a vote against 0 too, plus I’ll get a fresh baked pie. Yum!

Bmore on October 17, 2012 at 2:05 AM

Crowley claims she was ready to do that because she knew Benghazi would come up during the debate and, therefore, crammed beforehand on the issue.

Christien on October 17, 2012 at 12:58 AM

Evidently, she crammed much the way Obama did for the Denver debate?

socalcon on October 17, 2012 at 2:05 AM

I don’t watch the debates live.. a silly superstitition, I have this irrational fear I’ll jinx the Right man by watching it live..

so I read up on it after, catch the high lights, and read pro and con takes on it.

So I see Mitt did fine, and like the first two, the after debate conversation seems to be running hard against Obama/Biden. Tomorrow will show if Obama’s official lies bite him in the shorts..

I haven’t watched a live debate since that Fossil Benson went against Dan Quayle.

No, politics has been a hobby since 1978. You can ask my better half, she doesn’t like it. It’s nice to have friends here to talk to. In real life I have been black balled by all my supposed tolerant liberal friends and can seldom talk politics to them anymore. I don’t see my Conservative friends as often as I would like. I do love music though. It’s a great peacemaker between folks, plus it lets the outside world see that we aren’t as square as they might have imagined.

I’ll bet CC now wishes she hadn’t changed the ground rules at the last minute. She cut the discussion off and changed the subject rather curtly when she knew it was going badly for the liar in chief. All of us can remember Slick staring into the camera and chiding us on the meaning of the word is. We just had that repeated tonight by the current occupant of the oval office after screwing us for two weeks with his lying about the damn video.

This is the most retarded conservative parsing of language in recent weeks– and that’s saying something. And you endorse it. Good luck with that.

Congratulations on “winning” on the economy even though Mittens still can’t explain his math. Hey look, everybody! There’s a part of Mitt’s ass that isn’t black and blue! High fives all around!
