Tonight’s MSNBC pre-debate talking point: If Romney wins and ObamaCare is repealed, many more people will die

posted at 7:48 pm on October 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via the Examiner, a Grayson-ian appeal to the electorate as the left stares over the cliff at defeat. In fairness to Jonathan Alter, he’s been making this argument for months, since the days of late summer when O had a small but consistent lead. He was, in other words, panicking before panicking was cool; I only wish he’d establish some metrics on how to calculate total deaths under each candidate so that we can really compare. For instance, having blown all of his interventionist political capital on Libya, O’s mostly sat on his hands this past year while thousands of people have died in Syria. Do they count towards the Official Candidate Death Tolls? Do the civilians mistakenly killed in drone strikes count? Or are we only talking about Americans, like Chris Stevens?

If we’re only talking about Americans, then take two minutes to read the precis from a Lancet study published last year about the health effects of the economic meltdown in Greece. Higher HIV rates and suicide rates, smaller hospital budgets, and fewer people seeking treatment, partly due to longer wait times. Fiscal disintegration has a huge effect on public health, needless to say, and disintegration is where we’re headed if President Downgrade gets reelected and can’t shake free from his base to strike a deal on meaningful entitlement reform. You won’t hear that in Alter’s shpiel, though. What you will hear, tacked onto the end almost as an afterthought, is him fretting that the public will be throwing away a historic presidency if Romney wins again tonight and voters start to break decisively away from O. Matthews was pushing the same point a few hours earlier. Expect that as the next stage of lefty desperation messaging if The One craps the bed again this evening.

Like I said, it sounds just like Britain.

We still have medical bankruptcies because people have to pay for treatment that is considered “elective” by the NHS. Examples of “elective” procedures can be things like hip/knee replacements, pacemakers for curable stomach paralysis, etc. Cortisone injections are not covered. One used to have to lose the sight in one eye before being allowed to receive treatment for macular degeneration. The UK has some of the worst cancer and coronary survival rates in the developed world.

And, you don’t even want to go into “dying slow deaths because your condition is not an emergency.” Studies have shown anywhere between 20-33% of people with treatable forms of cancer, heart disease, and lung disease become terminal while on the waiting list.

PRIVATE hospitals in Germany offered to take the 1 million most seriously ill off of the NHS’ hands earlier this year, if the gov paid for the treatment and travel.

As for France, it is the PUBLIC system that is collapsing. It is the PUBLIC system that is closing hospitals. The PRIVATE system is expanding.

Germany has made many reforms to its healthcare system, as well as other parts of its social safety net, including putting caps on benefits.

Britain dedicates half the resources as a % of GDP toward healthcare compared to the US, and I don’t think anyone here is proposing that.
You might look to France and Germany as more comparable models.

bayam on October 16, 2012 at 8:11 PM

It doesn’t matter what Lefties are proposing -now-. Britain has the oldest, most advanced single-payer system in the industrialized world. They’re the endgame of creeping government control over health care/health insurance.

What is proposed by the Left now will inevitably end up like Britain because Leftist policies are based firmly in economic illiteracy: They simply can not, will not, and will never work over an extended period of time because they defy human nature itself.

When Leftist policy fails, what do they do? They always advocate for more control, more centralization, more authority and decision-making transferred away from the citizenry.

The most important and basic fact which disproves Alter’s “argument” is this:

Obamacare doesn’t extend healthcare to anyone.

It’s about how healthcare is paid for and rationed and not who gets healthcare.

EVERYONE already gets healthcare in the USA.

REPEAT: It’s about how to REDISTRIBUTE the costs.

BTW:

You have to believe in a deficit solution with a 20% across the board tax cuts, someone balanced by killing deductions. Good luck with that.

Vs your trillion dollar deficits you defend on purely partisan grounds.

But did you make the pasta from scratch? Nothing like homemade pasta.

No but that is on my “to do” list to start making homemade.

You though Obama would kill Romney last time. Hmmm your opinion doesn’t carry much weight.

CW on October 16, 2012 at 8:34 PM

If Romney wins and ObamaCare is repealed, many more people will die

If Obama is reelected and continues to drive the economy into the ground ObamaCare’s death panels will kill very many more people.
