Rice: My talking points were “purely a function of what was provided to us” by intelligence

posted at 4:01 pm on October 16, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Last night, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took (pretty much symbolic, showy) responsibility for the security failings during the terrorist attack in Benghazi that resulted in the death of four Americans. As for who approved Ambassador Susan Rice’s talking points for a string of Sunday-show appearances five days after the 9/11/12 attack in which she infamously insisted the whole thing was the spontaneous result of outrage over an internet video (even though we now know that intelligence officials knew it was a coordinated, pre-planned attack within 24 hours), Clinton maintained that you’d have to ask Ambassador Rice herself, via the WFB:

QUESTION: Who briefed Ambassador Rice that day? Did you sign off on that briefing and those speaking points?

SECRETARY CLINTON: You would have to ask her.

QUESTION: You didn’t speak to her before that appearance?

SECRETARY CLINTON: No, but that – everybody had the same information. I mean, I’m – I have to say I know there’s been a lot of attention paid to who said what when, but I think what happened is more important. We were attacked, and four brave Americans were killed. Others were injured. Dozens had to fight for their life and had to get evacuated. Everybody in the Administration had – has tried to say what we knew at the time with the caveat that we would learn more, and that’s what’s happened. So I think that – I’ve seen it before not just in respect to this. I think it’s part of what the fog of war causes.

The WaPo did ask U.N. Ambassador Rice about why she stuck to the spontaneous, non-premeditated storyline days after the intelligence community classified the not-a-random-riot as an act of terrorism. Her answer? Because that’s the information with which the intelligence community provided her. Uhm…what the what?

The administration’s characterization only days after Rice’s TV appearances that the assault in Libya was a terrorist attack has raised questions about why she attributed the incident to a protest that officials now say did not take place. Republicans have pressed for answers on whether she simply went too far in her assessment or was reading from an administration script that was designed to protect President Obama’s record on national security in an election year.

In an interview Monday with The Washington Post, Rice said she relied on daily updates from intelligence agencies in the days before her television appearances and on a set of talking points prepared for senior members of the administration by intelligence officials. She said there was no attempt to pick and choose among possible explanations for the attack.

“Absolutely not,” Rice said. “It was purely a function of what was provided to us” and had been given to Congress the day before.

Call me cynical, but somehow I’m not convinced that absolutely nobody from the president’s political camp nudged her in a certain direction in spinning this for the public. For goodness sake, the president of the United States stood up in front of the General Assembly of the United Nations more than two weeks later and proceeded to spend half of his speech criticizing a few individuals’ impetus for posting a mean video (“the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam,” Obama munificently told the august body), while taking it pretty easy on — oh, you know — just violence and terrorism. Somebody still has a lot of explaining to do; we’ll see if we can glean anything from Romney’s plans to ask Obama to “man up” on the Libya attack during the debate tonight.

I don’t think it was “intelligence” that sold Ambassador Rice short.

I think the GOP should do a commercial of a constant loop of Obama stating this before the U.N. “the future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam,”, with a couple of questions at the end:

1. Why is it so important that the President of the U.S. defend “the prophet of islam”;

2. Why doesn’t the President defend Christianity or Jews with the same fervor?; and

3. Why doesn’t the president defend freedom of speech and freedom of religion with the same fervor?

I think that would make a very powerful commercial. Perhaps juxtapose Obama’s fervent defense of muhammad with the Taliban shooting the 14 year old girl who dared to want to be educated.

Let’s force Obama to explain his passionate defense of Islam over the violence perpetrated on US Citizens. When push came to shove, Obama chose to worry more about what was being said about mohammad then responding to the murder of an American Ambassador.

Why this country hasn’t called for his impeachment and criminal prosecution by now, I’ll never understand.

SECRETARY CLINTON: No, but that – everybody had the same information.

Once again…

On the morning of the 12th of September — that would be the morning after the evening President Obama had been briefed that there was an ongoing assault on the Benghazi consulate and the Ambassador was missing and went to bed to get his beauty sleep – the President was told that Stevens and 3 others were dead…evidently, he did not answer the 3 AM phone call or his staff didn’t think it was important enough to tell him…he canceled his PDB and made a statement in the Rose Garden.

The significance of his statement is that, standing next to him, was one Hillary Clinton – THE SECRETARY OF STATE.

Now, why is this important?

The Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Charlene Lamb, has already testified that she was able to follow what happened “in almost real time” from a command centre in Washington. She KNEW what had happened.

Do they really think that we are stupid enough to believe that the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State did not tell the Secretary of State, her superior, what she witnessed “in almost real time” from a command centre in DC and the Secretary of State didn’t tell the President of the United States, her superior, before she joined him in the Rose Garden for his address to the nation?

We are to believe that they allowed the President of the United States to go before the American people for 2 weeks and blame a youtube video knowing that such was not the case?

We are to believe that NO ONE thought to correct him and prevent him from making a fool of himself, if he didn’t know, and expose himself to the world as an incompetent?

We are to believe that NO ONE from either the administration or the campaign gave Susan Rice, the President’s representative, the correct talking points before she went on 5 Sunday shows?

Really?

Impossible. Inconceivable. Only the totally clueless Obama Firsters and potted plants will believe this.

Christien on October 16, 2012 at 4:16 PM

Come on. “I just said what was on the talking points” is easily as serious an indictment of Ms. Rice as is cherry picking.

What if the “talking points” had said it was a band of rogue Leprechaun’s on a bad acid trip? Would she have recited that as fact?

If this is her defense – “I just said what was on the paper, even though I knew it was rubbish” – she should tender her resignation today and, even then, it will be several days late in coming.

IndieDogg on October 16, 2012 at 4:16 PM

Let’s remember the mathematical definition of a function is just a relationship between an input and an output.

If I is the intelligence information and BS is Rice’s nonsense then:

BS = -I is a perfectly valid function – that is, what she said is the inverse of the intelligence information provided.

So would be a situation where BS represents the manipulation of a small subset of I.

If Obama tanks tonight, will he bomb Youtube in retaliation?

kingsjester on October 16, 2012 at 4:17 PM

So every person in the administration has effectively said “It wasn’t me.” Even Clinton, since she only took the blame in a ‘the buck stops here’ kind of way because she’s Secretary of State, head of the State Department.

Obama’s statement before the UN is INDEFENSIBLE. He tried to lay the blame for the Benghazi attack on a movie trailer rather than the terrorists and Lybians who murdered our pesonnel, and he equated a man who makes a pathetically bad movie trailer to a those who are homicidal maniacs. His statement ” The future must no belong to those who slander the Prophet of Islam.” was, in and of itself, incendiary, since it gives the green light to violence whenever someone who practices Islam gets offended in relation to anything they hear, see, or read that has to do with ‘the Prophet of Islam’.

I, too, look forward to seeing his reaction when Romney asks him to ‘man up’ regarding his administrations failure in Benghazi.

I believe that Obama and Clinton’s careers lie trampled in the dust of Benghazi. They will never escape the taint of Benghazi, no matter what they say or how many other people on whom they seek to affix the blame.

Obama took the “it’s the movie” meme all the way through the UN mash-up. No mention of terror from the Admin. until after.

And that was indeed the goal. Keep terrorism out of the UN. Much better to say it was all OUR fault via the movie.

Christien on October 16, 2012 at 4:24 PM

So Biden lied. And the whole Obama administration is trying to make it look like he was telling the truth. Hillary “takes responsibility” for Benghazi, so Bide can’t be seen as a liar when he claimed no one ever told them they needed more security. And Rice is now claiming that she was acting based on information the intelligence community gave her.

But it’s too late. The “spontaneous protest because of an ugly video” was implausible when first floated. Circling the wagons weeks later will not fool anyone.

tom on October 16, 2012 at 4:25 PM

I knew that this was a planned attack on Sept 12th at 6:30pm Denver time, from a Breitbart post. I had been emailing updates to my family so I have a record of it.

Any government official who mentioned the video after that time was lying. In fact, after everything else we’ve learned, they were lying from the beginning since they were watching it real-time via video feeds and damn well knew that there wasn’t a protest.

I believe that they are the ones causing all of the riots over the video that spread around the world by mentioning a video no one had heard of as an excuse for the attack.

So not only do they have the blood of 4 Americans on their incompetent, negligent hands, they have the result of all those protests on their shoulders as well.

Common Sense on October 16, 2012 at 4:25 PM

So far here is the list of who’s fault it is:

1) The video
2) The State Dept.
3) Intelligence
4) The Congress for cutting funds
5) Romney/Ryan

Yet a congressional source told Fox News that CIA Director David Petraeus, during a briefing with members of the House Intelligence Committee three days after the attack, also espoused the view that Benghazi was an out-of-control demonstration prompted by the YouTube video. According to the source, this was “shocking” to some members who were present and saw the same intelligence pointing toward a terrorist attack.

You Know Who Still Hasn’t Called Benghazi a Terrorist Attack?

Gen Petraeus heads the intelligence community, or at least the CIA part of it. He has not publicly said what he believes regarding the 9-11-12 attacks. The only clue we have to his thoughts on the subject is that report that as of 9-13 he believed it to have been a response to a movie, plus the circumstantial evidence of Gen Dempsey’s call to Rev. Jones on 9-12.

On Oct 9, a group of senators sent Petraeus, and DNI James Clapper and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan, a letter asking them all to explain their positions on Benghazi. They have not answered.

Whether Petraeus turns out to be the source or a source for the Bengazi deception does not in any way excuse anyone else who engaged in the disinformation campaign and the attack on Mitt Romney that followed. Alone among major American political figures, Romney understood the attacks as they were happening and he stepped up to defend American values and interests while the Obama administration went silent. Romney aimed before firing; Team Obama collectively blamed America first.

Take this for what its worth, but here goes:

Amb. Stevens was not a prisoner of the State Department employment system. One must assume he was an intelligent man. Making that assumption raises some hard to ask questions, like “If he knew Al Qaeda was going to try something, and his multiple requests for additional security forces were denied, and he had personal concerns for his safety that were expressed in his diary, why the hell didn’t he just pack his bags and leave?”

Thats a tough question, but its an important one. The reason is this: At what point do you sacrifice yourself, and for what will you sacrifice yourself? In the military, you do it to accomplish the mission or to save your comrades. A very brave thing to do in a combat scenario. Its a completely different scenario when you know its going to happen (just not exactly when or where), you’ve made this known to your upper management, and when you’re told to suck hind teat cuz we got some Volts to buy for Vienna…how smart or brave is it to hang out and get killed? For me, its neither. Its just dumb.

So as tragic as the death of Amb. Stevens and the 3 brave souls who died with him is, all he had to do was hold a press conference or pack his bags. Either way, he’d still be alive and most likely so would the other 3 individuals.

Secondly, why was the Amb outside the US Embassy anyway..on the anniversary of 9-11? This is not explained, and I think has great impact on the events of that day.

I don’t believe it. I don’t believe the intelligence people assumed the attack started with a protest if they had no intel of a protest in Benghazi. (And being co-located with a CIA outpost on the front lines, they probably had a good amount of intel.) I don’t believe the intelligence people would assume the motivation of the attackers was the movie unless they had questioned at least one of them or had corroborated public statements from them. Intelligence professionals don’t just make sh*t up and report it to their superiors for them to act on without documented facts to back them up. That gets people killed and hurts the country, not things conducive to a long career in that line of work.

On the other hand, we have State Department officials in Cairo making apologies for the movie even before the riots, and attacking Romney when he criticized them for it. They had already invested their integrity in that narrative, the narrative of the Islamists, and they would have looked like the apologist toadies they were if they admitted the attack in Benghazi was not caused by that.

So somebody probably got the bright idea to read their assumptions into the gaps in the information in the intelligence reports and push it as an established fact in the media. And by “bright idea” I mean a really boneheaded move only the diplo-dweebs at Foggy Bottom could come up with. I don’t know how they managed to sell this crock to the higher ups like Hillary, Rice, and Obama except to guess that they either had the same motivation, or they were just too detached and uncritical to question it.

What a bad liar. The important thing is not merely that the four were murdered but that they would be alive today if they had not been put in such an obviously vulnerable position due to outrageous negligence & incompetence of her State Dept.

She and a lot of incompetents should resign – but no one important under Obama seems to suffer no matter how many corpses pile up.

I’m tired of this “fog of war” schtick already. That applies if you are a general in the battlefield command post and your cavalry cannot find the enemy.

In this situation, the survivors from the consulate were back the next day and could be debriefed. Supposedly, there were cameras recording the whole thing, as well and a drone flying overhead. The only “fog” is because Obama is such a poor leader that they all cannot even get their story straight.

Why wasn’t there a situation room meeting with Preezy, Grins, Hillary, CIA, Defense, etc., the next day, until it was all sorted? Oh that’s right:
“Vegas, baby, Vegas!”

That’s 20-20 hindsight. Before the attack, Stevens may have had his worries, his suspicions, and his fears. But if your boss back in DC, supposedly with intelligence and security experts in support, are telling you that you don’t need any more security, it’s pretty hard to jeopardize your career and act on your worries rather than second-guess them. At some point you have to believe they know what they’re doing. In this case they didn’t and it cost four lives and maybe a Presidency.

Impossible. Inconceivable. Only the totally clueless Obama Firsters and potted plants will believe this.

Main problem is that GOP won’t do anything. As they have always done in the past. Issa is all talk so far after all the noise in 2010 election that he will clean up the place.

When GOP leaders are afraid to say word LIE during TV interviews and Romney is afraid to use the word, as is Ryan, we are all doomed.

NOTHING WILL HAPPEN. TO ANYONE IN THIS ADMIN.

NOTHING.

If Obama uses this “fog of war” nonsense tonight, Romney needs to hit him with, “Tell us again, why were we at war in Libya, without a congressional authorization?”

Are these the same intelligence people that are “carefully” monitoring Iran’s nuclear weapons progress?

Let’s think about this event from Hillary’s perspective. Her underling at State actually watched for 6 hours live while the attack took place. Do ya think during those 6 hours that the underling might have thought to contact her boss? Let’s suppose she didn’t and someone else at State who was watching the event or heard about it during the long popcorn free 6 hours might have thought to call their immediate boss and he/she would have then called Hillary. According to Ms. Lamb, the underling, it was obvious that there was NO DEMONSTRATION going on because the video feed from the area outside of the consulate was quiet. So if anyone saw/heard the event they would have known that it was a terrorist attack. Hillary is maintaining that she didn’t learn about the event’s origin until many hours/days later from intelligence reports just like Ms. Rice. If you were Hillary would you fire every person connected with this who did not notify you of the attack during the initial 6 hours? Would you believe Hillary if she told you that the sun will rise in the East? No, I wouldn’t either.

East?
