Video: Axelrod won’t specify if Obama held national-security meeting after Benghazi attack

posted at 9:21 am on October 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Via Power Line and NRO’s Eliana Johnson and our own QOTD, Fox News’ Chris Wallace asks the question everyone except the media has been asking since the terrorist attack on our Benghazi consulate and the assassination of our Ambassador by al-Qaeda and/or its affiliates in eastern Libya.  Wallace doesn’t get to ask Barack Obama whether or not he bothered to hold a national-security meeting in the aftermath of the attack to determine whether the story the White House used for the next week was on the level — our President is much too busy weighing in on celebrity feuds to answer questions like these.  Instead, it fell to President David Axelrod, who provides exactly the same level of leadership that his boss is demonstrating these days:

Q. How soon after the attack did the President meet with the National Security Council, with people from state, with people from the…, the Director of National Intelligence, with all of the various people to try to sort out what happened in Benghazi?

A. Look. We are sorting out what happened there. Understand that the President the day after the attack called it an act of terror and charged everyone with responsibility for getting to the bottom of what happened.

That wasn’t the question, though.  The question wasn’t whether Obama gave an order; it’s whether he bothered to make time to find out what happened.  Wallace tries again:

Q. Yes, the president made a statement and then he went to a fundraiser in Nevada. Question: Before he went to the fundraiser in Nevada, did he meet with his National Security Council to try to sort out the shifting stories. Because State says they never said it was a spontaneous demonstration; Intel, you are quite right, did. Did he meet with the National Security Council before he went campaigning in Nevada?

A. Chris, I assure you that the president was in contact with all those who had information and responsibility in the national security chain about this incident.

It still doesn’t answer the question — at least not directly.  However, if the answer was “yes,” I’m pretty sure Axelrod wouldn’t have been tap-dancing around the question, which leads to the obvious conclusion that the President didn’t bother to hold a meeting to find out what happened, after the first successful terrorist attack on an American diplomatic mission in 14 years.

How clear do we need to be on which side the MSM is on? This is the issue that has broken through the embargo (that stonewalled Fast and Furious, Solyndra and any number of payoff stories) to show who Obama really is and what sort of a leader he is. Mitt now has all the ammunition to hammer away at the facade that is the Obama administration.

You don’t have to politicize something that is a huge political story, you just have to report on it and ask questions. Why can’t this administration come up with plausible and consistent answers?

In short, that’s a “no, he didn’t.”

marybel on October 15, 2012 at 9:32 AM

Axelrod can’t tell the truth, which is Obama didn’t care because he expected the bulk of the big media outlets to ignore the story and let it fade into hazy memories by Election Day, in the same way other Obama gaffes and scandals have been covered up (Ax could have also thrown in “…and we would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids!” reference on Fox, but in this case it wasn’t Fox that did them it, it was CNN when they found and reported on Ambassador Stevens’ journal, which contradicted the spin the White House was putting out).

IMO, the rat-eared empty suit thought that his bland statement the day after (before taking off to Vegas) and showing up when the caskets returned to the US was going to be the beginning and end of this situation. I’m also certain that there was no concerted effort to coordinate effort through the NSC.

Happy Nomad on October 15, 2012 at 9:33 AM

Who did Obama call for information?
The eyewitnesses?
Patraeus?

He knew what Mitt Romney said that night. Did he know what any of the guys who lived through the attack had to say?

I want the timeline of precisely what Obama did and who he talked to, from the time he first heard our Ambassador was missing. Asking for that information should be the easiest question in the world.

Doesn’t the way Obama has behaved in this whole thing- so out of touch and not in charge- kind of bolster the idea that he was not really that involved in the Bin Laden raid decision?

I had the same thought. To be fair, Ed Gillespi was the next interview and they talked Libya too but David Axelrod shouldn’t be the one to answer for this administration since he is not part of it. He should have referred questions like if Obama met with the NSC to the administration.

You’re being far too kind, Ed. You made two glaring omissions. First that Obama went to bed while the attack was still going on. And secondly, that he flew off to a fundraiser in Vegas the next day. Not only were the optics of that horrible(well, they would’ve been if the media weren’t so busy that day trashing Romney), but it’s looking almost certain that Obama went to Vegas before even bothering to meet with his national security team. Tells you where his priorities lie.

Chris, I assure you…

Nope. You bring up more questions, David.

Fallon on October 15, 2012 at 9:40 AM

Notice the narrative here. Axelboy is still running the “its the State Departments fault” narrative. He completely ignores what Chris says about how the State Department…being in REAL TIME COMMUNICATION with the consulate in Benghazi during the attack…says that it was NEVER a spontaneous anything. It was a fully realized, thought out, and planned attack set to occur on 9/11. Casper up there is putting all his information eggs into what the Intelligence Community said: that at first we THOUGHT it was a spontaneous reaction to a video which less than two dozen people had seen since it was put up on JUNE or JULY (IE: MONTHS ago), but after we found out it was not we called it terror. He also completely ignores the fact that Rice/Obama were out saying it was the video A FULL WEEK later. So, either the IC are completely incompetent at gathering information, or SD are a bunch of lying liars? Which is it Axelrod?

Hillary is cleverly being tossed further and further under the bus by these guys. I think they are actually getting ready to run her over, back up, and hit her again to make sure she is dead, so that she can take ALL the blame for the incident before Nov 6. By this point, after the hearings, there is so much more public knowledge on this that I think Obama is going to HAVE to blame someone for this travesty before the election, in order to NOT have it hanging around his own neck on election day. Maybe even before next weeks foreign policy debate, even. Otherwise, Romney is going to HAMMER him on this (he will anyway, but if Obama can point to someone else and say “their fault, not mine!” it might go a BIT easier on him).

Highlar on October 15, 2012 at 9:40 AM

ted c on October 15, 2012 at 9:42 AM

Heh, the first meeting after this Libyan disaster was probably focused on a list of possible scapegoats. I find this highly entertaining that Obama might have to try to throw the State Department and/or the CIA under the bus and I would almost guarantee that if he tries that he loses. Heck, the President would let an innocent newborn die in a closet for lack of easily available medical care. The President cares nothing for a dead ambassador I am sure.

The former regional security officer in Libya, Eric Nordstrom, recalled talking to a regional director and asking for twelve security agents.

“His response to that was, ‘You are asking for the sun, moon and the stars.’ And my response to him – his name was Jim – ‘Jim, you know what makes most frustrating about this assignment? It is not the hardships, it is not the gunfire, it is not the threats. It is dealing and fighting against the people, programs and personnel who are supposed to be supporting me. IMO that is why Obama failed the first debate so badly. He hasn’t been challenged on anything these past four years. He really thought that he had won when he left the stage because his mentality is such that there is no way that he could be losing to Mitt Romney.

I liken the Obama campaign to much the way the Third Reich ended with Hitler marching imaginary armies across Germany. Obama is sticking to college campus events thinking that he can spark that “yes we can” euphoria even though his campaign is now more along the lines of “no we didn’t”

Why would he bother to hold a meeting to find out what happened after the fact? Obama couldn’t even be bothered to stay awake long enough to find out what was happening when he knew the attack was under way and his ambassador and three other Americans were unaccounted for.

I have a theory that the narrative to all this was planned before it happened. They issued an apology before the protests, the speech at the UN was in the can. They were expecting protests. I think this is all about the “free speech” issue. Somebody double crossed them and turned an expected protest in Benghazi into a murderous attack.
Don’t forget Hillary’s speech about “90% of guns in Mexican crime come from the US”. Complete BS. That’s setting an agenda.

The father of Christopher Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya who was killed in the attack in Benghazi last month, said his son’s death shouldn’t be politicized in the presidential campaign.
“It would really be abhorrent to make this into a campaign issue,” Jan Stevens, 77, said in a telephone interview from his home in Loomis, California, as he prepares for a memorial service for his son next week.

“The security matters are being adequately investigated,” Stevens said. “We don’t pretend to be experts in security. It has to be objectively examined. That’s where it belongs. It does not belong in the campaign arena.” Stevens said he has been getting briefings from the State Department on the progress of the investigation.

..except that it goes to more than just the tragic death of his son. While we should be respectful of Mr Stevens’ wishes, there are others who are serving and — because of this administration’s incompetence — are in extreme jeopardy.

By the way, note that Romney was asked to cease and desist discussing his experience with one of the people murdered by those towel heads and he did so immediately.

Of course, the administration is not talking about the problem AT ALL and that’s the problem, isn’t it?

Answer: No.

I watched the interview Sunday. Is FNS now color-coding its guests? Axelrod’s always been a bit of a pasty mess, but I don’t recall him being so Smurfy before.

You really would like Libya to be out of the discussion, wouldn’t you? It is a political issue if only because of the repeated lies that have been told by high administration officials. Mitt Romney made comments about the attack on the Cairo embassy following their pre-protest apology for that video and you filthy liberals have tried to paint that as Romney politicizing Bengahzi. In the meantime your rat-eared idol was off dancing with party fat cats in Vegas while Ambassador Stevens body was still smoldering.

Is Jug-Ears gonna stuff Hilary under the bus?

Oh yeah. He has to.

Look at the long game:
If he loses this election, he’s gonna run in 2016 (counting on disappointment in Romney and rehabilitation of his record/lefty revisionist history) and he AIN’T gonna be primaried by Hilary.

Since they got no one else, that paves his way to the White House again to clean up what he didn’t get finished this time. Hilary is their ENTIRE bench.

Have no illusions, that’s Plan B for Obozo. Always has been.

Obama just doesn’t believe in all this national security nonsense. That’s why he employs a huge staff. It is his staff’s job to make all those critical decisions that could end up getting Obama fired.

These decisions are all made down in the White House bunkers deep underneath the Oval Office, and sometimes, the shear hassle of carrying them up to the boss is too much.

Did I mention that Obama assigns all of this national security nonsense to severely handicapped workers – who often have to struggle to make the long climb up the steps to the Oval Office closet where the stairway ends – and often expire on their way up to deliver the decisions.

God willing it will not be an issue much longer.

Happy Nomad on October 15, 2012 at 10:49 AM

Who’s brilliant idea in the White House was it to blame it on the video tape which then caused anti-American riots across the Muslim countries? (emphasis added)

An interesting point about the time-line of events. Connects with this one:

I have a theory that the narrative to all this was planned before it happened. They issued an apology before the protests, the speech at the UN was in the can. They were expecting protests. I think this is all about the “free speech” issue. Somebody double crossed them and turned an expected protest in Benghazi into a murderous attack.
Don’t forget Hillary’s speech about “90% of guns in Mexican crime come from the US”. Complete BS. That’s setting an agenda.

tj4osu on October 15, 2012 at 10:23 AM

Accepting these suppositions implies that the planners were too dense to change the plan after the ambassador was murdered.

Would they have been so intent on fomenting protests in order to justify constraining anti-Islamic opinions that they refused to stop the train after it got derailed?

No direct evidence has yet surfaced, with or without a conspiracy and a double-cross, so I’m not saying there was such a plan, but the administration’s MO certainly supports the conjecture.

Not a fan of the guy but a credible news organization should do the guy proper service by actually white balancing properly.

“The security matters are being adequately investigated,” Stevens said. “We don’t pretend to be experts in security. It has to be objectively examined. That’s where it belongs. It does not belong in the campaign arena.” Stevens said he has been getting briefings from the State Department on the progress of the investigation.

I truly appreciated the efforts of Chris Stevens as reports show he was doing an exemplary job in a most difficult situation. However this quote posted by verbaluce reveals a man totally in the tank for the Obama administration as they spew their bilge to the American people, who are entitled to the truth regardless of Steven’s father’s request. Anything that the Romney campaign can do to keep the pressure up on the administration is appreciated as far as I’m concerned.

Deano1952 on October 15, 2012 at 10:51 AM

KT McFarland is kicking butt on FOX News right now about this, wondering why the 0bama admin is sending out campaign operatives and others with no responsibility for security of our embassies to tell “fairy tales” about what happened.

UltimateBob on October 15, 2012 at 10:52 AM

It was reported that the President had to be brought in off the golf course for the Bin Laden raid. He is not really a hands on president, is he?

I’m at the point where I think anything is possible…
The slow drip of information is rather frustrating…but with the WH and State Dept. starting to feud now maybe more will come out soon. Would be good to see Lieberman get started with the Senate hearings this week too.

DA is pond scum.

Besides, with that scruffy mustache, he looks like he belongs in a certain regime that began in 1933, along with Himmler and Goebbles.

“calm down” is the new talking point by this adminstration. Note Biden telling us to “calm down” on Iran getting nukes.

Axelrod’s lack of specificity was very specific to me.
