Reuters: State Dep’t suspected in April that Libyan guards at Benghazi consulate had tried to attack it

posted at 8:01 pm on October 15, 2012 by Allahpundit

Time for your daily reminder that State didn’t merely stick Chris Stevens with “average” security despite him living and working in one of the jihadi-est places on earth. The security they provided him was actively, inexplicably, inexcusably bad. And before you read any further, let me remind you that the ominous chat-room message posted by Sean Smith the day he died about a Libyan guard taking photos of the compound still hasn’t been addressed by anyone in the government that I’ve seen. Did Stevens’s security break down to the point that his killers actually had someone on the inside?

More red flags from Reuters:

State Department officials suspected that two Libyan guards hired by its own security contractor were behind an April incident in which a homemade bomb was hurled over the wall of the special mission in Benghazi, according to official emails obtained by Reuters…

The April attack illustrated concerns among some U.S. officials in Libya that hiring local residents for embassy guard duties could in itself raise security issues.

The emails identified one of the suspects in that incident as a former employee of Blue Mountain Group who had been fired four days earlier for vandalism, and said the other was still working for the company. Both were unarmed guards who performed routine security tasks, such as screening visitors.

Both suspects were ultimately released after being interrogated by the local “police,” a.k.a. the February 17 Martyrs Brigade, which was partly responsible for providing security for the consulate and whose members were last seen hiding on the roof during the attack because they weren’t ready for it. No word on whether either of them was still working for Blue Mountain on 9/11, but that brings us to another unanswered question. Why did State hire Blue Mountain, an inexperienced firm, in the first place?

Other firms in the security industry expressed surprise that Blue Mountain had won a large, high profile contract from the US government. One industry executive said the level of service Blue Mountain provided did not appear adequate to the risks presented by a lawless city.

“We have visited the consulate in Benghazi a number of times and have an excellent relationship with the Americans. Our assessment was the unarmed Libyan guards were extremely poor calibre,” said one security source. “The Libyan Ministry of Interior are generally not happy with Blue Mountain and had them on their close observation/target list.”

The New York Times last week reported that major security firms with a track record of guarding US premises elsewhere had made approaches to undertake work in Libya but were rebuffed.

“We went in to make a pitch, and nothing happened,” a security firm official told the newspaper.

Blue Mountain had six employees on the scene, five Libyans and one British supervisor recruited from “the celebrity bodyguard circuit.” Security was sufficiently weak that BM’s local affiliate, Blue Mountain Libya, complained to its parent company this past summer that the resources they were being given weren’t enough. State was asked to intervene in the dispute between the two — but chose to do nothing. So it came to be that the U.S. ambassador ended up on 9/11 at a consulate that was vulnerable even according to its own security detail, and which State had had ample opportunity to fortify. Meanwhile, on the same day, the U.S. embassy in Barbados enjoyed protection from a detail of Marines. “Smart power,” 2012.

Just as O’s interest in an “easy” intervention in Libya made a difficult intervention in Syria more difficult, State’s decision to half-ass security for the Benghazi consulate has created a new, bigger security headache for the White House in Libya. Namely, how hard do they hit the local jihadis in reprisal? The Libyan government doesn’t want to approve an attack lest it be seen as a U.S. stooge at a moment when it’s trying to build legitimacy, and the U.S. doesn’t want to raise the profile of a group like Ansar al-Sharia by making it the Great Satan’s new enemy number one. There is a compromise solution, but of course it’s not ready yet. If only State had thought of this before letting a smile be Chris Steven’s umbrella against the mujahedeen.

The hole gets bigger and deeper with each passing day. Hillary could throw herself off the cliff, onto a bunch of swords and a bus drive over her, and it would still not matter. This is indicative of a failed foreign policy, it sits on Obama’s back and that appears to be how America is seeing it.

“I take responsibility” for what happened on September 11, Clinton said in an interview with CNN’s Elise Labott soon after arriving in Lima, Peru for a visit. The interview, one of a series given to U.S. television networks Monday night, were the first she has given about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

Clinton insisted President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are not involved in security decisions, Clinton said.

“I want to avoid some kind of political gotcha,” she added, noting that it is close to the election.

Clinton also sought to downplay the criticism that administration officials continued to say the attack was a spontaneous product of a protest over an anti-Muslim film, a theory that has since been discarded.

In the wake of an attack, there is always “confusion,” Clinton said. But the information has since changed, Clinton said in the interview. Source

So tomorrow night will Obama refer questions on Libya to Hillary?

If only State had thought of this before letting a smile be Chris Steven’s umbrella against the mujahedeen.

Oh! They knew the risks but they also knew the agenda the administration had going into the election. Obama as light giver to the Muslim savages by merely kicking Israel around a bit, talking about a return to 1968 boundaries, and bowing to their royalty. Real security would have worked against that narrative which is why Chris Stevens died and the embassy in Vienna got a $108K charger for their Chevy Volts.

*********** Alert *****************

Clinton: ‘I take responsibility’ for Benghazi

From Elise Labott, reporting from Lima, Peru
October 15th, 2012
07:47 PM ET
*************

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the bucks stops with her when it comes to who is blame for a deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi.

The attack killed Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three other Americans at the consulate.

The Obama administration has been heavily criticized after Vice President Joe Biden said during last week’s vice presidential debate that the White House did not know of requests to enhance security at Benghazi, contradicting testimony by State Department employees that requests had been made and rejected. Following the debate, the White House said the vice president did not know of the requests because they were handled, as is the practice, by the State Department.

The secretary of state also described the desperate scene in the State Department during the hours of the attack on the night of September 10. It was an “intense, long ordeal” as staff tried to find out what had happened.

Clinton said her mission now is to make sure such an attack will never happen again – but also that diplomacy, even in dangerous areas like Benghazi, is not stopped.

“We can’t not engage,” she said. “We cannot retreat.”

Where are these brave Libyans who trotted a wounded ambassador to the hospital where he died?

Where is the autopsy reports backing up your version of those deaths?

Why, with real-time video of the attacks did Susan Rice go on five talk shows to talk about a protest run amok?

Why did the rat-eared coward ascribe the attack to that video at a UN speech two weeks after the attack?

In 4 years when she decides to run, this will be a minor issue. By then, Hill and Bill can spin this thing with help from the media. It will pass and be swept under the rug. ‘One blemish’ on an otherwise ‘untarnished’ and ‘stellar’ record will be the narrative. She may even be praised for ‘taking responsibility.’

No, these are Clintons we’re talking about. They’re more popular with Dems than Barry, and they’re not going to do anything to damage that.

When did State tell Barry that it was a terrorist attack? It had to have been within a few hours, because they were watching the embassy in real time. They knew there was never a mob protest.

Hillary knows when he was told and what was said, and I bet it was fairly quickly after the attack began. How quickly did he react? What did he do? Well, he went to Vegas after a terrorist attack.

Who told Susan Rice to repeat that pack of lies all week and why?

Philly on October 15, 2012 at 8:27 PM

Hillary’s not quite “taking responsibility” as it might seem. Clearly, she’s been asked by Zero’s campaign to do something to stop the bleeding, and she is doing as little as possible. This is what she said, per Gretawire:

(below are rough notes from FNC’s Wendell Goler in Peru, traveling with the Secretary of State)

Subject: HRC r/o

Says of decision not to extend mission of supplemental security team in Tripoli: “I’m responsible for the State Dept, for the more than 60K people around the world. The decisions about security are made by security professionals. But we’re going to review everything to be sure we’re doing what needs to be done in an increasingly risky environment.”

Re June IED attack: “I can’t speak to who knew what. We knew there were security breaches and problems throughout Libya. That’s something that came about as the aftermath of the revolution to topple Ghadaffy with so many militias formed. So many weapons loose…it was taken into account by security professionals as they made their assessments.”

On Rice ‘grew out of a protest’ assertions: “the fog of war. The confusion you get in any type of combat situation. Remember this was an attack that went on for hours…there had to be a lot of sorting out…everyone said here’s what we know subject to change.”

Very lukewarm “taking responsibility,” and the “I can’t speak to who knew what” is a warning shot to Zero: Don’t go there, buddy.

I read somewhere early on in this story that the reason that they chose Blue Mountain was because they were the only group willing to abide by the State Dept. Rules of Engagement of having no ammunition in the weapons. Other security contractors refused to operate under these constraints. That is why some have been requesting the State dept. ROEs and they have not been released.

O/T: Conveniently Hillary Clinton is accepting all responsability for the Lybia attacks (while still blaming security “experts”) just hours before the 2nd debate.

The Clintons playing ball…

DON”T BLAME ME…BLAME HILLARY

cmsinaz on October 15, 2012 at 8:03 PM

‘Cuz it sounds something like this:

“Let me be perfectly clear: As most Americans know, Hillary Rodham Clinton has balls. Big balls. Big, big balls. Oh, and a HUGE stick. My VP may have said that he knows that I have a big stick, but he’s wrong. I’m nothing more than a big, fat, pink, Code-Pink-vajayjay.

One last thing, I want you to listen to me. I’m going to say this again, I am not a crook nor a liar. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time — never. These allegations are false. I am just an incompetent vajayjay, who will never ever evah accept responsibility for anything, and since Bill humiliated Hill and she survived, I figure she can manage it again.

And, you wimmins out there, I know that you might be a little peeved about my throwing a woe-as-me-man under the bus, but just remember that I gave you free contraception so vote like your lady parts depend on it. If you could compartmentalise Bubba’s lies to a point where you were willing to exchange BJs for his remaining in office since he would keep abortion “safe, legal and rare,” just remember that I support 4th term abortions!

And, now, this muffin needs to go back to work for the American people. Thank you.”

Twitter must be going crazy over this new Hillary lie – “OVER CAPACITY” (obama pulled the plug) again.

Pork-Chop on October 15, 2012 at 8:37 PM

so I was right on twitter when I pointed out the guards were opfor? I told Tapper that the day it happened. Surreal, this SCOAMF is more worried about Jihadi Jim ButtHurt and not having his stupidity in helping the Muslim Brotherhood grab a nation in the first place brought back up furing campaign season so he and HILLARY! conspire to allow a US Ambassador to die rather than demand the right to US guards or withdraw?

I’m gonna go down to my garage and drop F bombs for an hour.

But she works for him…it’s still his fault!

And how will dumping on Hillary affect the already low enthusiasm among Dems and women? If Obama had any guts, integrity, or political instincts, he’d step up and accept responsibility. He’d still lose, but at least he’d earn some respect from Americans. Too bad it’s so obvious that’s not important to him.

Kenz on October 15, 2012 at 8:38 PM

If the leftiest parts of the MSM continue protecting the administration, Obama won’t care about any of these stories. So the question becomes, how long can papers like the NYT hold out against the drip-drip-drip of Benghazi revelations before they start writing stories of their own.

MTF on October 15, 2012 at 8:38 PM

OT: Is this something new?

The secretary of state also described the desperate scene in the State Department during the hours of the attack on the night of September 10.

I thought it was the night of Sep 11th?

This would place it before the Egypt protests????

faraway on October 15, 2012 at 8:39 PM

Taking the “responsibility” is just Cover-up 2.0. “My fault. Okay, people, nothing more to think about. Move along.”

So, going forward – everything that isn’t Bush’s fault is now officially Hillary’s fault.

Pork-Chop on October 15, 2012 at 8:41 PM

Hillary Clinton trying vainly to take the heat off Obama. And faiing to do so.

It’s one thing to say you accept responsibility for a tragedy but it’s quite another thing to actually do it: the mismanagement being revealed that created the vulnerabilities exploited in Benghazi are astounding, not to mention the exploitive tragedy that resulted because of that.

So Hillary’s now “taking responsibility.” Yadda, yadda, yadda and she orders her next snack.

If that’s the real reason, what does it say about Blue Mountain sense of safety in Lybia?

IMO, Blue Mt had operatives in-country that helped takedown Qaddafi, either through intel or tactical.

Those assets were put in place by releasing Megrahi.

This whole thing ties into the people State and Intel put in Cairo to remove the Mubarak hierarchy via “Arab Spring”.

We were Egypt, Europe was Libya.

As it was reported at the time, England and France really wanted to open up the Libyan natural resources.

budfox on October 15, 2012 at 8:43 PM

That was very nice of Hillary to take responsibility for the failure of her department to insure the security of her people.

The “wait on the investigation” is a delay until after an election.

The Secretary of State knew her people were asking for security and denied it. If she takes responsibility, she needs to tell us now why she saw fit to leave their ass out in the wind?

In taking responsibility she still has not answered why the White House, State Department and UN Ambassador went out and told the American people for weeks a fantasy they all knew to be untrue and have yet to come forward with any reasonable explanation as to why.

Reaching over and pushing my BS button. To say it has been overused the last 4 years is an understatement.

Hillary takes responsibility.

Obama plays golf.

Hillary sits in the hot tub and wonders why her glasses won’t stay clear, get steamy, bah.

Obama makes a run for some barbeque and flashes his big wad o’ cash.

Hillary needs a nap and orders some new shoes.

Obama plays some golf.

Hillary takes responsibility.

Americans are dead.

Romney must make Benghazi his opening statement. That will pretty much end the debate right there.

riddick on October 15, 2012 at 8:29 PM

Obama OUTSOURCED the security of our nation (the consulate is American soil) to a firm with little experience that turned around and hired locals in Benghazi for $4 an hour.

If Obama wants to talk about outsourcing jobs, lets go!

Actually some in the media are trying now to draw some equivalency between both instances asking how is it possible Obama gets blamed when Bush kept reading to some kids. Of course they don’t draw a full equivalency in that Bush was in front of the cameras talking about a terrorist attack later that same day, while Obama and his group were still blaming YouTube two weeks after Benghazi happened.

So this was to benefit her vanity in Peru?

Isn’t HIllary the Secretary of State of the U.S.A.? NO? I was SURE she was but guess I am in error.

I’m happy Hillary Clinton has found her comraderie and crying towel among the other Communists in South America.

Does Obama know what a Marine is, or is he only familiar with corpsemen?

Hope Romney drops the hammer on Scooter tomorrow. Like shooting fish in a barrel.
