Hillary: I take responsibility for Benghazi

posted at 8:48 pm on October 15, 2012 by Allahpundit

Fearless prediction: With Hillary having now formally accepted blame, President Above The Fray will magnanimously volunteer at tomorrow night’s debate that, no no, it is with him that the buck ultimately stops. The White House has been holding off on doing that because they’re desperate to frame this as an internal problem at State. Now that Clinton’s gone and done that, Obama can pose as a stand-up guy and loyal boss by symbolically accepting responsibility on behalf of the people who are really at fault.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the bucks stops with her when it comes to who is blame for a deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi.

“I take responsibility” for what happened on September 11, Clinton said in an interview with CNN’s Elise Labott soon after arriving in Lima, Peru for a visit. The interview, one of a series given to U.S. television networks Monday night, were the first she has given about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

Clinton insisted President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are not involved in security decisions, Clinton said.

“I want to avoid some kind of political gotcha,” she added, noting that it is close to the election.

Ace has another quote from her that essentially puts the whole thing off on her underlings, but there’s no link and I don’t see it in the CNN story. No matter, though: She’s not claiming actual responsibility in the excerpt above, just symbolic responsibility as the head of the Department that’s at fault. Given how the public generally respects showy professions of blame, it’s really the easiest thing in the world to make a “buck stops here” statement. The One himself would have done it weeks ago, I’m sure, if not for the fact that he’s caught in an election death struggle and knows the GOP would have hammered him with it. (As I explained above, it’s safer politically for him to do it now that Hillary’s chimed in.) The only way to make a “buck stops here” admission truly meaningful is to put some meat on the bone by identifying and correcting all the things that you’ve done wrong. Has Hillary done any of that yet? What protocols at State are going to change from all of this? Are we finished, at least, with pitiful public groveling to Islamists about how awful and terrible and reprehensible that Mohammed movie that hurt their feelings was?

Here’s the real question: Did Obama put Hillary up to this or did she do it on her own initiative to put O on the spot? As I’ve explained, I think this actually helps him by letting him accept symbolic responsibility while continuing to shunt actual responsibility onto State. But maybe I’m wrong. A friend e-mailed me after I wrote this post on Friday scolding me for thinking that Obama might throw Hillary under the bus rather than vice versa. After all, she’d have an easier time running in 2016 against President Romney than she would trying to succeed a two-term Democratic president. (Although, in that case, why did Bill Clinton give a wildly successful speech for O at the convention?) And as I said Friday, there is political peril for O in having Hillary go first on this. Potentially, he’ll look weak and diffident tomorrow night by following her lead, not loyal and magnanimous — and maybe Hillary knew that when she stepped up. Expect Romney to hammer that point, especially given how much he enjoys playing the Clintons off of Obama. What kind of “leader” says “the buck stops here” only after it’s already stopped somewhere else?

Here’s the vid, via CNN. This will, assuredly, be used against Hillary in 2016 if she runs, but I think she figures that between her high favorables and the fact that the public likes when executives “take charge” by accepting blame or whatever, she’ll be forgiven by voters. Quite possible.

Update: Ace e-mails to say that the Hillary quote in his post came from Wendell Goler on Fox News, who also interviewed Clinton today. They put it up on the screen sometime early this evening.

How does any of this translate to an uptick in the polls for these guys. I don’t see it getting spinned to the point where the undecideds and Independents get headed back to obama and biden.

hawkdriver on October 15, 2012 at 9:32 PM

I don’t see how it does translate into an uptick, but it certainly help stop the bleeding as it is swept under the rug like F&F.

Quite frankly I believe F&F has a lot more potential for Romney. He can look Obama straight in the face as ask, “What on Earth was your administration thinking by selling thousands of untracked weapons to narco-terrorists in Mexico? Weapons connected to 100′s of deaths of innocent Mexicans?”

The follow up would be, “How can any of your answers regarding F&F be credible when you have thrown the blanket of executive privilege over the matter which prevents anyone from finding out the truth of what happened?”

Finally, connect F&F with Benghazi as a consistent pattern of screwing up and then lying and hiding facts from the public.

mpthompson on October 15, 2012 at 9:40 PM

This is the best scenario for Hillary – probably the result of Bill and his legal team. Now she’s out of play when it comes to cover up. That all belongs to Obama now.

Curtiss on October 15, 2012 at 9:35 PM

I thought this sounded like something Bill would come up with.

Taking responsibility, as AP wrote, in a general non-specific way as head of the department. Well, that’s meaningless.

Obama can’t throw Hill under the bus. He can’t go on a vendetta saying she threw him under the bus.

I hope most Americans do not give Hillary and BHO a pass on what they’ve done.

Clinton takes blame for handling of Libya attack
************************************************

AFP – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told US media that she will take the blame for any shortcomings in the handling of an attack last month on the US mission in the Libyan city of Benghazi.

“I take responsibility,” she said, according to news networks CNN and Fox, which interviewed her during a visit to the Peruvian capital Lima.

President Barack Obama has come under fire from his critics over the attack, which left four Americans dead,

and Clinton’s move
********************

will be seen as an attempt to take the heat
*********************************************

off him three weeks before he bids for re-election.
*****************************************************

On September 11th heavily-armed militants stormed the consulate compound in Benghazi and attacked an annex housing US personnel, killing four Americans including the American ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.

In the immediate aftermath of the deaths, US administration officials said that it appeared to be linked to protests in the Muslim world against a film shot by US-based activists deemed insulting to the Islamic faith.

But it has since emerged that the prime suspects in the attack, now seen as a deliberate assault, are Al-Qaeda linked Islamist militants.

Obama’s Republican rival in the November 6 vote,

Mitt Romney,
************

has accused the administration of giving a muddled response

The candidates are to meet in a crunch debate on Tuesday,

and Clinton’s intervention appears
**********************************

to have been timed to deflect attention from the White House

as polling days looms and the polls show the race on a knife edge.

And exactly WHO gave Susan Rice her instructions before she went on SIX different talk shows to lie to the American people? Did Hillary do that too?

Murf76 on October 15, 2012 at 9:23 PM

All appearances by administration officials on the Sunday talk shows are cleared by the WH Communications Office and what they are to say is very carefully vetted by that office. It has been that way for decades, the standard practice.

So, there’s no question that the WH knew exactly what Rice was going to say and, most likely, they (actually the Obama campaign) provided the talking points for her. Again SOP, within any administration in the midst of a re-election campaign.

It would not be out of the ordinary for Hillary, Rice’s immediate boss, to have participated in that process, but there’s no way for Obama to separate himself since it was his Comm Office directly involved.

The fit has hit the shan, big time.

TXUS on October 15, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Well it took over a month for her to fall on the sword for Obama. Wonder what the quid pro quo for this political suicide is going to be. Makes you wonder why this could not have happened on the 12th of September instead of a month of lies that only a fool would believe. And why do it in Peru!

Here it comes…

Philly on October 15, 2012 at 10:08 PM

The White House has been holding off on doing that because they’re desperate to frame this as an internal problem at State. Now that Clinton’s gone and done that, Obama can pose as a stand-up guy and loyal boss by symbolically accepting responsibility on behalf of the people who are really at fault.

So how does that jive with this:

When is she going to explain how the youtube video was to blame? Or is she going to take responsibility by simply saying the phrase “I take responsibility“?

ModerateMan on October 15, 2012 at 10:09 PM

OPERATION DON’T BLAME THE EMPTY SUIT!!

Underway.

PappyD61 on October 15, 2012 at 10:09 PM

Newt laughs: Bucks stops with the President, and Hillary stole his line. Said Bill and Hill have done more for Barry’s re-election that he has himself.

finally

CoffeeLover on October 15, 2012 at 10:09 PM

finally Newt says “he’s hiding behind Hillary Clinton”

that’s it?

CoffeeLover on October 15, 2012 at 10:08 PM

Sure he is. And just before the debate tomorrow night. What timing.
Now I guess that issue is suppose to be over. Hillary took the blame now lets move on.

JellyToast on October 15, 2012 at 10:10 PM

I don’t get it so please help me because I am a little slow on this one. How does this hurt Obama? I think it helps him doesn’t it? Another person to blame and not take any responsibility like he has for 3 years already?

Conservative4ev on October 15, 2012 at 10:11 PM

Newt: “She’s a team player; it’s always been her style.”

Gingotts on October 15, 2012 at 10:11 PM

“Take responsibility” for what exactly?

Isn’t State answerable to the president and his administration’s policies?

onlineanalyst on October 15, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Seems like this is the best card Hillary & Democrats can play. I find it meaningless and think we should keep the investigation going.

22044 on October 15, 2012 at 10:12 PM

Says Hill is a team player; she’s going to take a bullet for the team, but the way the president has lied to the public is a disgrace. Barry and Joe for a month have lied to the country.

Newt calls this a calculated, methodical act to mislead. Doesn’t answer the question about whether he should have addressed the nation following the attack. Shucks.

petefrt on October 15, 2012 at 9:56 PM

Pete, I want to believe.

I’m still not sure what I think, but here are some random meme’s this destroys, in no particular order.

1. That security was adequate based on intelligence. At the debate, Mitt just asks why was that asserted when Hillary is at least in retrospect, taking the blame for what happened? If security was fine, no one needs to be responsible for anything.

2. The video, dead as a doornail. Where did that even come from if not the White House spin machine? A man was given dangerous national attention and arrested for a parole violation while Hillary already apparently knew she was to blame? Or what, did she just have an epiphony later after reading a couple old memos on AQ in Benghazi? “Oh yeah, I guess that was my bad. Silly me.”

3. Biden’s claim that somehow budget cuts caused it like he tried to put it off on Ryan. Sorry pal, I guess in a way Hillary just chucked you under the bus and addded another lie to the list of whoppers you told at the VP debate. Mitt just needs to add that vacation spots in the Carrebean had armed Marines and they spent budget money on new Chevy Volts for post in Europe.

4. They wouldn’t know until after an investigation? Please. If Hillary knew, this is one that would sink them. While that poor security officer mother was begging for info, they knew and they didn’t tell her crap. She didn’t even know what killed her son.

I know there’s more.

hawkdriver on October 15, 2012 at 10:13 PM

Newt expects Mitt to do well because he is well-prepared and on offense. He expects Obama to show up this time, but Mitt is more than capable to beat him. Barry spent 4 years in a cocoon and no one challenged him.

Philly on October 15, 2012 at 10:14 PM

I think AP described it:

She’s not claiming actual responsibility in the excerpt above, just symbolic responsibility as the head of the Department that’s at fault.

INC on October 15, 2012 at 10:16 PM

This was much more than an unfortunately security lapse.

This was the Obama administration (assisted by State) deliberately trying to minimize security concerns in Libya because they needed to give the impression that Libya was safe.

I’m going to copy-&-paste this until conservatives understand the point.

blink on October 15, 2012 at 10:09 PM

The two are not mutually exclusive.

Conservative4ev on October 15, 2012 at 10:11 PM

What did she even admit to? Do we even really know? Did she admit to knowing something and not passing it on? Or has she just taken responsibility for…. not knowing what happened yet?

Seriously. I listened to the clip and I didn’t hear her say what she was taking responsibility for. I did hear them say there were budget cuts. So that means it’s the GOP’s fault. Or Romney’s fault. The mess? The confusion? What?
Oh, I get it. She’s taking responsibility and now the issue is over and we can’t bring it up anymore and isn’t Hillary such a hero and see this shows Obama didn’t do anything wrong.

But what is she taking responsibility for exactly? So is she “taking responsibility” and yet it’s still Romney’s fault? Sounds like it.

hawkdriver on October 15, 2012 at 10:17 PM

So what else is Hopey out of the loop on ?

This is supposed to be some type of defense for failure to manage the State dept.? Ignorance??

Can’t wait for Super Mitt to ask Hopey what and why he was whispering to Medvedev about………and has he made anymore Secret Deals we should know about Pres. Otransparency?

FlaMurph on October 15, 2012 at 10:17 PM

This bloody debacle is on her watch, may even have her fingerprints on it. She has to take responsibility.

On the other hand she has already put full responsibility for the BS narrative on the White House.

She will “take responsibility” for the security failure while passing off blame on underlings. (Perhaps a sacrificial Lamb?) and suddenly people are a whole lot less interested in the details. They shift to the unanswered question: Who cooked and ordered the BS narrative? Focus is right back on Obama.

Better to make a mistake and own up than to be a liar, in the long run. Shrewd.

novaculus on October 15, 2012 at 10:17 PM

“Considering” retaliatory strikes? They knew who did it within a day of the attack. Should have been done by now. Too busy apologizing to terrorists.
