Great news: Global warming ended … sixteen years ago

posted at 2:01 pm on October 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Hey, don’t take our word for it.  This news comes from a group that has pushed the anthropogenic global warming panic for years — the Meteorological  Office in the UK, which quietly released the data in a report on the Internet.  The plateau in global temperature averages now equals the length of time that temperatures increased, 16 years, after a 40-year-plus period of slight cooling:

The world stopped getting warmer almost 16 years ago, according to new data released last week.

The figures, which have triggered debate among climate scientists, reveal that from the beginning of 1997 until August 2012, there was no discernible rise in aggregate global temperatures.

This means that the ‘plateau’ or ‘pause’ in global warming has now lasted for about the same time as the previous period when temperatures rose, 1980 to 1996. Before that, temperatures had been stable or declining for about 40 years.

Predictably, the same people who have pushed AGW panic for the last 20 years now say that a 16-year period isn’t long enough for scientific claims to be made:

Some climate scientists, such as Professor Phil Jones, director of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, last week dismissed the significance of the plateau, saying that 15 or 16 years is too short a period from which to draw conclusions.

Isn’t that what global-warming skeptics argued, too? Doesn’t that make Professor Jones a denier?

Not everyone in climate science agrees with Dr. Jones.  In fact, one leading researcher here in the US actually dares to compare the outcomes to the hypotheses and models, and reaches a scientific conclusion, rather than faith-based panic:

Professor Judith Curry, who is the head of the climate science department at America’s prestigious Georgia Tech university, told The Mail on Sunday that it was clear that the computer models used to predict future warming were ‘deeply flawed’.

Even Prof Jones admitted that he and his colleagues did not understand the impact of ‘natural variability’ – factors such as long-term ocean temperature cycles and changes in the output of the sun. However, he said he was still convinced that the current decade would end up significantly warmer than the previous two.

Don’t bet on it, if that’s based on the same computer modeling that predicted constant growth in temperatures over the last two decades.  The most accurate part of Dr. Jones’ response is that he and his colleagues don’t understand what’s going on, and they’re apparently not interested in revising their hypotheses in the face of contrary data.  That may be described as many things, but science isn’t among them.

Jones is a hack, like so many other “climate scientists”, who see that with any data disproving their theories their goose of the golden eggs (i.e.- public subsidies) is threatened. Would a guy like him have the relevance he does if it wasn’t for “Global warming/Climate Change”?

I give him props for at least admitting the models are flawed and, at the very least, commenting on an opposing view without calling the authors “Nazis” or calling for their arrest. That’s more than can be said about Hansen at NASA over here.

Still, it is embarrassing how they keep moving the goal post. Their sample between 2009-2012 showed that “global warming is unquestionable”, yet a 16 year sample showing otherwise is not “conclusive enough”.

This is what science has been reduced to.

Jabberwock on October 15, 2012 at 2:29 PM

First off, we’re recovering from the well-documented Little Ice Age c. 1300 to 1850. So, the warming has been natural, it’s been nothing to get alarmed about, so to speak. And the Medieval Warm Period was warmer than today. So there is nothing unusual about current temperatures. In other words, there’s nothing wrong with the climate, but we’ve just blown $90 billion on worthless windmills and the like, and we are shutting down coal plants en masse, blocking pipelines, and pushing for $10 a gallon gas, all for alleged climate change. Insanity.

And by the way, the Little Ice Age and the Medieval Warm Period were 2 things that Michael Mann suppressed in his fabricated debunked Hockey Stick graph. And by the way also, the Hockey Stick is essential for the AGW hypothesis. The hockey stick is bunk. So so is AGW.

anotherJoe on October 15, 2012 at 2:30 PM

A major climate scientist (Singer?) predicted a maximum at the end of the last century and he did it while the temperature was climbing over thiry years ago. His prediction was based upon three solar system dynamic cycles which all affect earth heating and were all near a maximum for their affects upon earth’s temperature. The longest has a period of several hundred years, so we should have a gereral temperature decline with ups and downs for several hundred years.

We can debate the numbers all day long. But anytime that one side of the equation is used to a) condemn and silence opposing views, and b) limit your freedoms, choices, sovereignty, and imposes burdens of any sort in your individual pursuit of happiness, then be very wary of as actual science is commonly thrown out the window in favor of an outcome.

Al Gore and other Warmists have been pushing for global taxes on CO2 for years. CO2 is the perfect object for their revenue purposes because you literally cannot live without making CO2, we exhale it after all.

Even Prof Jones admitted that he and his colleagues did not understand the impact of ‘natural variability’ – factors such as long-term ocean temperature cycles and changes in the output of the sun. However, he said he was still convinced that the current decade would end up significantly warmer than the previous two.

The highlighted part above is the biggest thing that has always bothered me about the AGW folks. We’ve only been taking accurate temperature readings for about 150 years, so how can we make any precise conclusions about trends that occur on a geological time scale? And while they are not nearly as precise as actual temperature readings, geologists can get a rough idea of climate conditions including temperature from fossil and rock samples dated to certain periods. We know those more general data sets show climate trends much hotter and much colder than our current climate long before humanity ever even existed, let alone becoming industrialized. So that obviously would tell any fool looking at it that there is very much a set of natural processes that must occur outside of human influence which have far greater impact on climate.

Besides all that, we’ve only been studying climatology as a precise science for a very short period of time. We are always discovering new things that have an impact on climate… things that were never previously factored in to their climate models (obviously, since we did not know about them). For example, I recently read about some evidence that our position in our galaxy and our universe may also impact our climate. Things like whether our solar system or galaxy is passing through a more dusty or less dusty region of the universe and other similar factors can also impact our climate. And those sorts of things don’t just happen on a geological time scale, but on an astronimcal time scale. How can we possibly factor every one of those types of huge myriads of possibilities into our models? And when these climate scientists are talking about 1 or 2 Celcius differences having a large impact on things like water levels and food production, then I would imagine even the tinyiest of factors may make the difference in modeling such small movements in temperature over large time frames.

I don’t deny that the Earth may be warming… seems fairly obvious that it’s generally been warmer since the Last Ice Age… but I do dispute that humans yet have the understanding of something as complex as the climate in order to make sweeping generalizations about what it will do in the future based on the limited set of precise data we have. And even worse, for supposed scientists to then proclaim they have such knowledge and that we should alter society based on said knowledge.

Well, there is a correlation, but the AGW alarmists got their cause-and-effect back-ass-wards. They’ve been pushing this notion that CO2 increases cause temperature increases, when in fact the data shows that CO2 increases actually follow temperature increases.

gravityman on October 15, 2012 at 3:26 PM

Doesn’t this get carbon dioxide off-the-hook as the cause of AGW? I’m sure carbon emissions have increased during this same 16-year period. Therefore, doesn’t this undercut the EPA’s finding that carbon dioxide is a “dangerous pollutant” that they can regulate?

Bartrams Garden on October 15, 2012 at 3:24 PM

You miss the point. It’s not whether or not the Earth is warming. Clearly the Earth goes through both warming and cooling periods that result in temperatures both much higher and much lower than our current temps. The point is that we have a bunch of scientists running around saying they understand what the climate is doing and what it will do in the future and that it’s all man’s fault for being industrialized.

The Earth warms and the Earth cools, and we know it has cooled way more and heated way more in it’s history numerous times through it’s own natural processes before man ever even existed. So how can we possibly be so convinced that this time we are the cause of it for certain… no doubt about it… yup, definitely… settled science… and we must rearrange all of our societal constructs to account for it, mostly to the average person’s economic detriment.

gravityman on October 15, 2012 at 3:39 PM

Remember Obama on Anthropogenic Global Warming? “The science is settled.” he declared.

Hmmm. A huge “Climategate scandal when those involved at East Anglia University were found out through means of their own emails. The CERN CLOUD study, concluding that the cycles of that great ball of fire in the center of our solar system might have more to do with warming than anything humans have been doing. Careful analyses documenting how many tons of carbon are spewed into the atmosphere by humans compared to natural occurring causes…like volcanoes and concluding that the human contribution amounts to “…a fart in a thunderstorm.” The Norwegian Tree Ring Study concluding that it was warmer during the Roman era, well before industrialization, that it is now. Record ice levels in the Antarctic. Now this most recent data concluding that the ‘warming’ lasted 16 years and has been over for…16 years.

The science IS settled, and it concludes with proof positive that Obama is a willing tool of those who wish to ‘redistribute’ our wealth through the ruse of “Global Warming” and aid and abet the UN in that effort to extort money from the developed nations for their own purposes.

Interesting to ponder just how much of that money, extorted from the developed nations, had they succeeded, would have gone the way of union dues, extorted from the union rank and file in much the same manner, and wind up being raked off for ‘administrative expenses’ and purely political purposes.

thatsafactjack on October 15, 2012 at 3:50 PM

The “angry frown” comes soon.

PC alert – it’s call “climate change”, rubes.

Schadenfreude on October 15, 2012 at 2:06 PM

You’re so 6 months ago. The correct term is “Climate Disruption”. they are currently testing “Climate Stagnation”.

NotCoach on October 15, 2012 at 2:09 PM

My personal favorite was their experiments with “global wierding” as the term.

And, of course, the headline just now on the I Heart Radio news was that September was the “hottest month on record.”

Ignore the trend, and cherry pick a datapoint. SOP.

Once a new administration is installed at 1600 Pennsylvania, and a new AG is in charge of the DOJ, a criminal investigation should be convened. These “scientists” (and I lost the term loosely) acted in concert to cook the books, hide the data, and peddle falsehoods to the American people in order to get $$$ in government grants. There is word for this sort of behavior – fraud.

And RICO, for that matter. I welcome charges that this is a witch hunt. I want these people to be afraid. Very afraid. Maybe we can call it a “witch doctor hunt” – that would be more apt. I won’t be happy until I see Michael Mann frogmarched out of State College in a full set of restraints. I want to issue an extradition order to the UK for Phil Jones. I want Rajendra Kumar Pachauri forced to seek asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy and bunk with Julian Assange for the rest of his natural life. And I want all the money returned. Every last penny.

Ending the data then means it is possible to show a slight warming trend since 1997, but 2011 and the first eight months of 2012 were much cooler, and thus this trend is erased.

They are trying to tell me this was a cool year? Nonsense, they are up to something. This year was hot as hell. I think the worst thing that could happen for them was to have an actual scorching hot year because they know their numbers for the coming years will show a big decline, and their settled science can’t explain temp declines.

We shouldn’t let them get away with understating the heat this year. They will still claim it’s the hottest year on record, but just slightly higher than 2nd place. It’s already written that next year will be hotter than this year, it has to be or their science is debunked.

Watch out! If this keeps up, and we keep controling our emissions then it might get too cold!

Make it stop!!!

I remember the good old days when plenty of people were willing to support CAGW claims. Now, very few dare to accept that debate role.

Yeah, but California is still going ahead with its Kyoto-of-the-West program starting January 1.

California is leading the way — off a cliff.

Is it safe for me to check on tomorrows weather yet? Looks to be getting colder.

Curry denies saying the models were deeply flawed and seems a little annoyed that she was quoted that way.

Chomsky Dance Recital on October 15, 2012 at 2:17 PM

the models weren’t flawed they showed exactly what they were meant to show. the fact that they bore no relationship to reality was known but they thought that they would have absolute power before it became known.

Whats stupid about the photo in this thread is, ice displaces more water as a solid. If the ice melted, the sealevels would not rise.
