Quotes of the day

posted at 8:01 pm on October 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio defended GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney this morning on “This Week” for his use of the deadly incident in Libya to criticize President Obama on the campaign trail. I asked Portman about this after the father of killed U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens told Bloomberg it would be “abhorrent” to make his son’s death a campaign issue.

“He didn’t say it was a campaign issue. He said it was an issue. I mean, it’s something the American people are really concerned about, Jake. And, look, you’ve been on top of this. I’ve seen some of the tough questions you’ve been asking the White House on it,” Portman said. “Folks want to know two things. Why wasn’t the security there? And why did the administration try so hard to create, you know, the wrong image as to what happened?”

***

Tearing a few pages out of the old Clinton playbook, David Axelrod carefully defined the word “we” this morning for Fox News’ Chris Wallace: when the Vice President said in Wednesday’s debate that “we” weren’t aware of the Benghazi consulate’s requests for increased security, “we” included only the President and the Vice President – not the Obama administration at large or the State Department. You got that, right?

In response to Wallace’s inquiry about whether the President takes personal responsibility for the denial of security requests in Benghazi, Axelrod said, “these were judgments that were made by security folks at the State Department.”

***

We are going through a ‘mission accomplished’ moment. Eleven years after September 11 [2001], Americans were attacked on September 11 [2012] by terrorists who pre-planned to kill Americans. That happened and we can’t be in denial, particularly when there are compounds all over the Middle East that need to be legitimately protected at a level that security professionals ask for,” Issa said of the attack in Libya…

“If security professionals are giving the warning that they need more security, that they need to change how we do business diplomatically in the region, and that is not being heard, than it isn’t just Ambassador Stevens who is now dead, it is everybody who works throughout the Middle East is at risk if we cannot get the security level right,” Issa said on CBS.

***

1. When, if ever, did Secretary of State Hillary Clinton become aware that there was a request for more security in Benghazi before 9-11-2012?

2. Who participated in briefing Ambassador Susan Rice before she went on the Sunday talk shows on Sept. 16?…

6. When did the president learn there was no mob in Benghazi protesting the film?

7. Who reviewed the president’s U.N. speech delivered on Sept. 25, wherein he continued to connect the attack and the anti-Muslim film?…

10. And, as we started, why has Petraeus not stepped forward to defend his agency, make clear we knew promptly that this was an organized terrorist attack and correct the misrepresentations by political leaders?

***

Perhaps, then, the real explanation for the White House’s anxiety about calling the embassy attack an act of terror has less to do with the “who” than with the “where.” This wasn’t Al Qaeda striking just anywhere: it was Al Qaeda striking in Libya, a country where the Obama White House launched a not-precisely-constitutional military intervention with a not-precisely-clear connection to the national interest.

In a long profile of President Obama published last month by Vanity Fair, Michael Lewis suggested that the president feared the consequences of even a single casualty during the Libyan incursion, lest it create a narrative about how “a president elected to extract us from a war in one Arab country got Americans killed in another.”

How much more, then, might the president fear a narrative about how our Libyan intervention helped create a power vacuum in which terrorists groups can operate with impunity?

***

There was no “intelligence” suggesting a movie protest in Benghazi. All the on-site reports made plain what had happened — and by the following morning. The second highest official in the Government of the United States looked the citizenry in the eye on Thursday and said something he knew to be completely false. If Biden’s statement was agreed with Obama and not just ol’ Joe wingin’ it, they’re gonna need a bus with Truckosaurus-high wheels to get the State Department, the intelligence guys, and everyone else they’re planning on throwing under there.

Surely, even among Obama’s media sycophants, there must be someone who recognizes that all the cushy court eunuch posts are filled and, rather than being the umpteenth extra in the crowd scene, there’s a reputation, a Pulitzer and maybe a movie deal to be made here.

Hey, Gumby! Since you are touting Zogby in your latest poll-fist-pumping, please allow me to share dis wid ya:

NewsmaxZogby Poll: Obama’s Lead Dwindles to 1 Point in Ohio — 45%-44%

“(When it comes to the all-important swing state of Ohio this election), the momentum is clearly with Romney.

(When asked how important the independent vote is for Ohio) Extremely important. For starters, Ohio does not have registration by political party. People will identify themselves as Democrats or Republicans but most voters in Ohio are independents.

Obama just doesn’t have wiggle room in Ohio. Ohio is very important, and it’s going to be very, very close.

“the president starts out with a solid deficit — 39 percent who rate him poorly or strongly disapprove of his job performance. That means to be credible, he has to win over 90 percent of the rest of the voters. Right now he’s at about 47 percent overall approval, and 50 percent disapprove. But 39 percent strongly disapprove — they’re just not going to vote for him.

President Obama had been leading by double digits among independents — now it is swung over in favor of Romney.”

Frankly if an incumbent is under 45-46 percent who feel that he deserves to be re-elected, that’s normally trouble for the incumbent. When we first started in Ohio, it was 45 percent who felt that he deserved to be re-elected. Then . . . time for someone new is at 48 percent — just not good news for the president at this moment.”

- John Zogby

“Zogby says he’s seen the state go from being up for grabs to solidly in Obama’s corner to now, up for grabs again. But with the independent factor, Romney is on track to prevail.”

In response to the attack, Hillary opined that Islam is “a great religion” … “of peace.”

Right. There’s a lot of talk of O throwing Hillary under the bus, but Hillary herself in far from blameless in the bending over backward appeasement that the O admin orchestrated, including the spending of 70k taxpayer funds to run ads in Pakistan saying how the U.S. finds the freely produced youtube video about the religion of peace to be despicable. Appeasement never works. If we tossed our freedom of speech under the bus, the next thing the Islamists would be yelling for is Muslim enclaves in our country where Sharia law trumps our laws. This is our country, not theirs.

Dark Star on October 14, 2012 at 8:55 PM

The “intelligence” the WH and Susan Rice has been relying on is an intercept that said Al Qaeda operatives wanted to take advantage of the protests in Cairo to execute their pre-planned attack. They can’t admit that they conflated Benghazi and Cairo with regard to the video, without admitting that Al Qaeda is on the rise in Libya and has the means to attack us at will. So they will delay, delay, delay until the press tires of this story or another distraction comes along.

The biggest problem with the vast majority of polls of Obama isn’t the margin Obama is losing by, but the fact that he has almost never polled above 50 percent during this course of his campaign. That trend is continuing. This is bad for the incumbent because late undecideds always break for the challenger.

THE LINE ROMNEY SHOULD USE IN THE DEBATE:
“The difference between Barack Obama and I is that when I screw up, you can blame me. As a matter of fact, I want to make a promise to the American people tonight. If you elect me, I promise from the day I am inaugurated never to blame Barack Obama for screwing up the economy!”
mitchellvii on October 14, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Love this. Only change I would make is to replace the word “screw” with something else. It’s too crass a word for Romney’s style, but a more polite sounding synonym would work just as well. And technically it’s “Obama and me” not “Obama and I” is this context, but I’m just nitpicking.

Mr Lance , sometimes the trolls can lead to an entertaining read when other folks smarter than i manage to put them in their place but unfortunately it just goes right over their precious lil heads and does no good in the long run. As a devout Christian ( Roman Catholic actually) i love everyone and spend my life trying to live by the good word but even i must admit that folks like Mr Gumby with their blinders on make me want to hurl things at my pc at times. The very deliberate blindness to hyper partisan tripe that they espouse in their little worlds is literally bringing our beloved country to its knees and not only do they not care that they are killing us all slowly , they REVEL in it. In my humble opinion that makes them truly evil individuals and while God tells me to love my neighbors and i can not bring myself to hate them or mistreat them it does make me wish devoutly that i can just silence them from my own lil corner of the world

Peace…

I spent five days in Ohio this week. And one thing I was struck by was just the enthusiasm on the Republican side. The crowds that Governor Romney was getting I would describe as Obama sized crowds from 2008. Some 10,000 people, day after day after day at rallies at county fairgrounds. And these people that I spoke to were not as intent on defeating the president, which they are. But they were saying in the affirmative that they want to elect Mitt Romney.”

Country Reports on Terrorism
******************************

U.S. law requires the Secretary of State to provide Congress, by April 30 of each year, a full and complete report on terrorism with regard to those countries and groups meeting criteria set forth in the legislation. This annual report is entitled Country Reports on Terrorism. Beginning with the report for 2004, it replaced the previously published Patterns of Global Terrorism.

http://www.state.gov/j/ct/rls/crt/
==================================

LIBYA
*****

Overview: Fighting between the Qadhafi loyalists and the rebels consumed most of the country throughout 2011. Loose munitions from Libyan stocks – in particular, the threat of terrorists obtaining Man-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS), which could pose significant risks to regional security and civil aviation, become a significant international issue. The United States funded civilian technical specialists to work in Libya to account for MANPADS stock, but it was unclear how many MANPADS remained and where they were located. Press accounts indicated that al-Qa’ida (AQ) leader Zawahiri dispatched AQ fighters to eastern Libya.

Legislation and Law Enforcement: In previous years, Libya maintained long-standing legislation that was used to counter terrorism and terrorist financing; however, the government was not fully operable during the reporting period. The interim government has expressed its support to maintain existing legislation in the realm of terrorism and sought to cooperate with the international community on information sharing and border security.

Countering Terrorist Finance: Libya is a member of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force, a Financial Action Task Force-style regional body. However, Libya has yet to undergo a mutual evaluation assessment. (Libya’s mutual evaluation assessment was scheduled for March 2011, but was cancelled because of the conflict.) A fter the fall of the Qadhafi regime, there was little information or reliable data on the scope of Libya’s anti-money laundering/counterterrorist finance countermeasures, including investigations, asset forfeiture, prosecutions, and convictions. Libya’s Financial Intelligence Unit was set up under the Qadhafi regime and has retained its Qadhafi-era Director.

For further information on money laundering and financial crimes, we refer you to the 2011 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR), Volume 2, Money Laundering and Financial Crimes: http://www.state.gov/j/inl/rls/nrcrpt/index.htm.

Now, with so many of the adminstration’s bald lies about Benghazi being exposed, PJ Tatler’s Bryan Preston is asking not whether Petraeus was politicizing the intell, but whether he is “among the sources of the Benghazi deception.”

In a post called “You Know Who Still Hasn’t Called Benghazi a Terrorist Attack?” Preston reprises some of Petraeus’ appeasement of Koran Rage back in Afghanistan. Preston also notes that several senators sent a letter on October 9 to Petraeus, DNI Clapper and White House CT advisor John Brennan asking for a specific timeline on the Benghazi intelligence They haven’t received an answer.

Attention!!! General Petraeus here. I condemn the action of the individual in the United States who made a video disrespecting the Great Prophet Mohammad. That action was hateful. It was intolerant, and it was extremely disrespectful. I condemn the actions of a small number of individuals who have been extremely disrespectful to the Holy Qur’an. Together with our Muslim Partners in Peace, we must secure and serve the people of the Muslim world.

My money is on Hillary. I went back & listened to clips of Hillary after 9/11/12 — every time she mentions that stupid video it is 100% about “protests throughout the Middle East” — she never once said that there was a spontaneous protest over the video that turned violent in Libya. That lie was all Susan Rice, Jay Carney & Obama (Fun fact most people are overlooking — Obama made the UN Ambassador a Cabinet position, so Rice doesn’t work for the State Department, she works for the White House).

Also, 2 days ago in Italy Hillary gave a statement where she very carefully parsed her words that “Susan Rice was given the same information that all other senior officials were.” People took that to mean that *all* senior officials were given the b.s. about the spontaneous protest over video that turned violent — but we now know that isn’t at all what Hillary meant. Hillary’s statements & actions after 9/11/12, including Rice not Hillary, going on all those Sunday news shows, looks like she was purposefully distancing herself from that lie.

It seems to me there are 2 things going on here: (1) Why wasn’t there enough security in Libya, especially after it was specifically requested. Hillary, as Sec. of State, is responsible for that. Obama, of course, as POTUS, shares responsibility, especially since his “let a smile be your umbrella” foreign policy is probably why those decisions about security were made, but Hillary is directly responsible. She can’t escape that; and (2) Who decided to mislead the American people about what happened in Libya re: the lie about the spontaneous protest over a video that turned violent. That, it looks like, is 100% on Obama. And as Watergate taught us — the cover up is worse than the crime.

A confusing array of contradictions concerning the murders of four Americans, one of which was a U.S. ambassador, was made worse by Vice President Joe Biden’s remarks during the debate with Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan Thursday evening.

Today the confusion only worsened yet again when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters that her agency was not the source of misinformation concerning the attacks, charging instead that the White House was the source of the false mantra that the murders were spurred by an anti-Muslim film made in the United States.

Clinton told reporters that when Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, made her rounds on every Sunday morning news show to claim the film motivated the attacks, the information had been fed to her by the White House and not the intelligence community in the State Department or the CIA.

Very well said. Something struck me though with your last couple sentences. We’ve all hear that many times…and in the case of Watergate it is true. In this case though, I’m not so sure. The ‘crime’ in this case being the failure to provide adequate security which resulted in the deaths of four Americans. I’m thinking that is worse than the cover up. But I needn’t quibble too much. The bottom line: Both the failure to protect our people AND the subsequent coverup are far worse than Watergate.

I am not at all trying to make light of the four deaths of US citizens. Watergate was a penny ante break in — nothing compared to the death of an ambassador & 3 others.

What I meant is that if Obama had come out and been *truthful* about what happened, it would only be Hillary’s neck on the chopping block for the lack of adequate security (even though she is part of Obama’s administration & it is probably because of his policies that there was inadequate security). But Obama didn’t do that. Instead, he started that b.s. lie because he figured (1) the MSM would cover for him (like they always do); and (2) he didn’t want to admit right before the election that aQ was growing, not “on its heels” or whatever line he used at the DNC when they were all shouting “GM is alive & OBL is dead!” and that instead of bringing a “new peace” his Arab Spring made us *more* unsafe. The fact that Obama lied to & misled the American people about the deaths of 4 Americans for political reasons is actually worse than the deaths themselves. All the accusations from his campaign that Romney is “politicizing” the deaths? B.S. — Obama is the one politicizing the deaths with the cover up.
