Quotes of the day

posted at 8:01 pm on October 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio defended GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney this morning on “This Week” for his use of the deadly incident in Libya to criticize President Obama on the campaign trail. I asked Portman about this after the father of killed U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens told Bloomberg it would be “abhorrent” to make his son’s death a campaign issue.

“He didn’t say it was a campaign issue. He said it was an issue. I mean, it’s something the American people are really concerned about, Jake. And, look, you’ve been on top of this. I’ve seen some of the tough questions you’ve been asking the White House on it,” Portman said. “Folks want to know two things. Why wasn’t the security there? And why did the administration try so hard to create, you know, the wrong image as to what happened?”

***

Tearing a few pages out of the old Clinton playbook, David Axelrod carefully defined the word “we” this morning for Fox News’ Chris Wallace: when the Vice President said in Wednesday’s debate that “we” weren’t aware of the Benghazi consulate’s requests for increased security, “we” included only the President and the Vice President – not the Obama administration at large or the State Department. You got that, right?

In response to Wallace’s inquiry about whether the President takes personal responsibility for the denial of security requests in Benghazi, Axelrod said, “these were judgments that were made by security folks at the State Department.”

***

We are going through a ‘mission accomplished’ moment. Eleven years after September 11 [2001], Americans were attacked on September 11 [2012] by terrorists who pre-planned to kill Americans. That happened and we can’t be in denial, particularly when there are compounds all over the Middle East that need to be legitimately protected at a level that security professionals ask for,” Issa said of the attack in Libya…

“If security professionals are giving the warning that they need more security, that they need to change how we do business diplomatically in the region, and that is not being heard, than it isn’t just Ambassador Stevens who is now dead, it is everybody who works throughout the Middle East is at risk if we cannot get the security level right,” Issa said on CBS.

***

1. When, if ever, did Secretary of State Hillary Clinton become aware that there was a request for more security in Benghazi before 9-11-2012?

2. Who participated in briefing Ambassador Susan Rice before she went on the Sunday talk shows on Sept. 16?…

6. When did the president learn there was no mob in Benghazi protesting the film?

7. Who reviewed the president’s U.N. speech delivered on Sept. 25, wherein he continued to connect the attack and the anti-Muslim film?…

10. And, as we started, why has Petraeus not stepped forward to defend his agency, make clear we knew promptly that this was an organized terrorist attack and correct the misrepresentations by political leaders?

***

Perhaps, then, the real explanation for the White House’s anxiety about calling the embassy attack an act of terror has less to do with the “who” than with the “where.” This wasn’t Al Qaeda striking just anywhere: it was Al Qaeda striking in Libya, a country where the Obama White House launched a not-precisely-constitutional military intervention with a not-precisely-clear connection to the national interest.

In a long profile of President Obama published last month by Vanity Fair, Michael Lewis suggested that the president feared the consequences of even a single casualty during the Libyan incursion, lest it create a narrative about how “a president elected to extract us from a war in one Arab country got Americans killed in another.”

How much more, then, might the president fear a narrative about how our Libyan intervention helped create a power vacuum in which terrorists groups can operate with impunity?

***

There was no “intelligence” suggesting a movie protest in Benghazi. All the on-site reports made plain what had happened — and by the following morning. The second highest official in the Government of the United States looked the citizenry in the eye on Thursday and said something he knew to be completely false. If Biden’s statement was agreed with Obama and not just ol’ Joe wingin’ it, they’re gonna need a bus with Truckosaurus-high wheels to get the State Department, the intelligence guys, and everyone else they’re planning on throwing under there.

Surely, even among Obama’s media sycophants, there must be someone who recognizes that all the cushy court eunuch posts are filled and, rather than being the umpteenth extra in the crowd scene, there’s a reputation, a Pulitzer and maybe a movie deal to be made here.

There was no “intelligence” suggesting a movie protest in Benghazi.

They all not only claimed that the Benghazi attack was a “spontaneous uprising” in response to the video, but a copycat of the Cairo protest. The first part of the claim is disproved by the surveillance video. The latter part is disproved by the timeline. The survivors from Benghazi had arrived in Tripoli before the Cairo protest had started.

Of course, don’t forget Obamacare and the econonmy. Inflation is taking off:

Wholesale prices rose 1.1% in September following a 1.7% gain in August, which had been the largest one-month increase in more than three years, the Labor Department said Friday.

This is the expected result of O’s war on energy, and his “quantitative easing” (money printing). Last year Rick Perry said that it would be tantamount to treason for Bernanke to do this, but just weeks ago he went ahead and did it anyway.
High inflation + high unemployment = STAGFLATION.
Stagnating incomes, rising prices, and persistent underpaid underemployment is the curse of O’s stagconomy.

I feel for Ambassador Stevens’ father and his loss. There are other Americans with loved ones still serving in harm’s way in our embassies and consulates, and they are worried sick that this administration doesn’t have their back. Heck, Obama still won’t tell Pat Smith how her only child died.

So, sorry, Mr. Stevens, but this is personal and political.

Christien on October 14, 2012 at 8:18 PM

I asked Portman about this after the father of killed U.S. ambassador Christopher Stevens told Bloomberg it would be “abhorrent” to make his son’s death a campaign issue.

I am sympathetic to the sudden and tragic loss this family is experiencing. Nevertheless, their son was an adult serving in an official capacity as our ambassador in Libya. Since he lost his life serving in this official capacity we as citizens should have every right to ask questions regarding the circumstances of Ambassador Stevens’ murder. The questions are particularly pertinent because the Obama administration clearly lied about the circumstances even after knowing the inconvenient truth. It is helpful to read the web pages of foreign newspapers to get accurate news under a Democrat administration. My symapthies to Mr. Stevens and his family, but the circumstances of his son’s death in the particular situation in which it occurred is not off limits for discussion. It has ramifications for our ability to protect our interests, including personnel, worldwide. I suggest Mr. Stevens not watch or read the news for a few weeks.

Briefing by Senior Administration Officials to Update Recent Events in Libya

Special Briefing
Office of the Spokesperson
Via Teleconference
Washington, DC
September 12, 2012
******************

SENIOR ADMINISTRATION OFFICIAL ONE: Thank you, Operator, and thanks to all of our journalists for joining us on this very, very difficult day. We thought it was important to give you a little bit more information about what we knew when we knew it to help shape your understanding of the tragic events in Benghazi. Here with me I will hereafter be Senior Administration Official Number One. That’s [title withheld]. I also have with me [Senior Administration Official Two], hereafter Senior Administration Official Number Two. And we also have [Senior Administration Official Three], hereafter Senior Administration Official Number Three.

Let me just give you some framing points. First of all, we want to make clear that we are still here today operating within the confusion of first reports. Many details of what happened in Benghazi are still unknown or unclear. The account we’re going to give you endeavors to reconstruct the events of last night to the best of our ability now. And again, this reflects our current accounting of events. These are first reports, and so the facts could very well change as we get a better understanding.

Let me also give you a little better understanding about our office conditions in Benghazi. The facility that we are working in is an interim one. We originally acquired the property before the fall of Qadhafi. It includes a main building and several ancillary buildings, and then there was also an annex a little bit further away.

So let me give you a little bit of the chronology
*************************************************

to the best of our knowledge.
*******************************

Again, the times are likely to change as it becomes a little bit more precise,
*************

but this is how we’ve been able to reconstruct what we have from yesterday.
***********

At approximately 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time yesterday,
*********************************************************

which was about 10 p.m. in Libya,
*********************************

the compound where our office is in Benghazi began taking fire from unidentified Libyan extremists. By about 4:15, the attackers gained access to the compound and began firing into the main building, setting it on fire. The Libyan guard force and our mission security personnel responded. At that time, there were three people inside the building: Ambassador Stevens, one of our regional security officers, and Information Management Officer Sean Smith. They became separated from each other due to the heavy, dark smoke while they were trying to evacuate the burning building. The Regional Security Officer made it outside, and then he and other security personnel returned into the burning building in an attempt to rescue Chris and Sean. At that time, they found Sean. He was already dead, and they pulled him from the building. They were unable, however, to locate Chris before they were driven from the building due to the heavy fire and smoke and the continuing small arms fire.

At about 4:45 our time here in Washington, U.S. security personnel assigned to the mission annex tried to regain the main building, but that group also took heavy fire and had to return to the mission annex. At about 5:20, U.S. and Libyan security personnel made another attempt and at that time were able to regain the main building and they were able to secure it. Then, due to continued small arms fire, they evacuated the rest of the personnel and safe havened them in the nearby annex.

The mission annex then came under fire itself at around 6 o’clock in the evening our time, and that continued for about two hours. It was during that time that two additional U.S. personnel were killed and two more were wounded during that ongoing attack.

At about 8:30 p.m. our time here in Washington, so now 2 o’clock in the morning in Libya, Libyan security forces were able to assist us in regaining control of the situation. At some point in all of this – and frankly, we do not know when – we believe that Ambassador Stevens got out of the building and was taken to a hospital in Benghazi. We do not have any information what his condition was at that time. His body was later returned to U.S. personnel at the Benghazi airport.

Later that evening, we were able to bring our chartered aircraft from Tripoli into Benghazi to evacuate all of our Benghazi personnel back to Tripoli. This evacuation, which had to occur in a couple of planeloads, included all of our American Benghazi personnel, including the three wounded, and the remains of our fallen colleagues. They are now in the process – that same staff – of being evacuated to Germany. The staff that is well is going to stay in Europe on standby for a while while we assess the security situation in the coming period. The wounded will be treated in Germany, and the remains will come home, and we’ll advise you of when that will be as soon as we know.

In the meantime, we have taken our Embassy in Tripoli down to emergency staffing levels. We have reduced the staff down to what we call emergency staffing levels. And we have requested increased support from the Libyans while we assess the security situation.

I would also like to advise you that last night, all of our diplomatic posts around the world were ordered to review their security posture and to take all necessary steps to enhance it if those were deemed necessary. I’d like to now turn it over to Senior Administration Official Number Three for some remarks on what his agency has been up to.(More….)

I FORESEE A GOLF-BASED PARODY AD: New Obama ad: Few presidents have faced so many challenges. Sand traps, golf carts stuck in mud, balls in the rough. . . .

UPDATE: Reader Dan Naden writes:

My first thought? The last president faced a lot of challenges.

It’s insulting that Obama would dare to make such a claim while President Bush faced the Dot Com crash, 9/11, Katrina, etc. All while Democrats pulled out all the stops in undermining him and everything he ever supported (including our troops overseas).

Obama should probably pull that ad because, aside from sounding like a whiner, aside from being an outright lie, the ad is a slap in the face for America.

Well, that’s the whole Obama presidency, really.

Bob Woodward called obama a liar.

Obama is a Liar!!!

Schadenfreude on October 14, 2012 at 8:38 PM

Polls, smoles, holes, colds, moles, molds.

From the same Gravis Colorado Poll Gumbo is citing tonight:

Approve of Obama?

Disapprove 48.6%
Approve 42.1%
Other 9.3%

Square that Gumbo and tell us all how the Gravis poll is accurate?

Love the way Ingraham drew the comparison between the Plame affair and Susan Rice as it relates to the way the press handled it. And directly aimed it at the NYT guy. Heh.

predator on October 14, 2012 at 8:39 PM

You know who cries that the other guy is “politicizing” things? The guy who’s LOSING.

Mr. Stevens — I’m very sorry for the loss of your son and if he was a private figure I would agree wholeheartedly that your wishes should be respected. However, he wasn’t a private figure — he was an official representative of me & the rest of the USA as our Ambassador to Libya and he was killed in a terrorist attack on our consulate. Therefore, your wishes do not outweigh the right of the American people to know why there wasn’t more security and (even more importantly) why the POTUS lied — and continues to lie — to us about what happened.

For a little fun, Biden vs. Biden.

Fallon on October 14, 2012 at 8:40 PM

THE LINE ROMNEY SHOULD USE IN THE DEBATE:

“The difference between Barack Obama and I is that when I screw up, you can blame me. As a matter of fact, I want to make a promise to the American people tonight. If you elect me, I promise from the day I am inaugurated never to blame Barack Obama for screwing up the economy!”

mitchellvii on October 14, 2012 at 8:31 PM

Great line.

faraway on October 14, 2012 at 8:40 PM

why does anyone even respond to Gumby? he is such an obvious troll , he should be ignored. i have yet to EVER see him write anything that is even remotely non partisan and it is always pro obozo. just ignore him if we are lucky and pray really hard maybe his computer will die and we will be graced with his absence for a while!

Easy, they don’t like Obama and like Romney even less.

Obama’s approval has been rotten in CO for a while now. If Romney hasn’t taken the lead there by this time, he’s not going to.

gumbyandpokey on October 14, 2012 at 8:43 PM

Tearing a few pages out of the old Clinton playbook, David Axelrod carefully defined the word “we” this morning for Fox News’ Chris Wallace: when the Vice President said in Wednesday’s debate that “we” weren’t aware of the Benghazi consulate’s requests for increased security, “we” included only the President and the Vice President – not the Obama administration at large or the State Department. You got that, right?

I am inclined to believe that everyone except the President and Vice President may have known for two weeks what was going on in one of the worlds flash points, but that does not make me sleep any easier.

I suddenly have a craving to go to 7-11 and get a can of Beefaroni.

Hopefully KOOLAID doesn’t show up, or I’ll have to make a pitcher of grape.

Or maybe wild cherry.

Remember when Sec. of State Colin Powell’s 2nd in command Deputy Sec. of State Armitage leaked Plame’s name to WaPo & no one in the press attempted to hold GWB or anyone in his White House responsible?*

Yeah, me neither.

Obama’s House of cards is collapsing before our eyes, less than a month before the election.
