Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the Week?
posted at 9:31 am on October 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
Time to take our weekly pause from seriousness, change the topic, and ask ourselves which of our five entries wins the OOTW award. Don’t rush; have your morning OJ, and then just politely excuse yourself for a couple of minutes.
Previous weekly “winners” in 2012:
- Scolds Congress for campaigning instead of addressing issues – after he campaigned while embassies burned
- “The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.”
- Goes to Las Vegas fundraiser after attack on Benghazi consulate
- No time to meet with Netanyahu, makes time for the Pimp with a Limp radio show
- Ordering platform change after criticism over God, Jerusalem
- Sends form letters to families of SEALs KIA, personal letter to family of rapper Heavy D
- “I don’t think you or anybody who’s been watching the campaign would say that in any way we have tried to divide the country.”
- Hiding from WH press corps while giving interviews to People and Entertainment Tonight
- Asks supporters to find businesses to support his “you didn’t build that” argument
- “Because we’re leading around the world, people have a new attitude toward America. There’s more confidence in our leadership. We see it everywhere we go.”
- “Just like we’ve tried their plan, we tried our plan — and it worked.”
- “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.”
- “But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people…”
- Pitches amnesty policy at naturalization ceremony of people who entered legally
- Removing silverware from tables before speaking to Hispanic voters
- Scolds American Crossroads for lack of transparency … on same day Obama asserted executive privilege in Fast & Furious probe
- “The private sector is doing fine“
- Declares Lech Walesa “too political” to accept award, gives another to Dolores Huerta, chair of Democratic Socialists of America
- “Polish death camp“
- “[T]hose of us who have spent time in the real world . . .”
- Adds himself into presidential histories of his predecessors, screws up JFK quote
- “When I think about, ah, those soldiers or airmen or Marines, sailors, who are out there fighting on my behalf …”
- Includes Nazi collaborator/Hitler admirer in proclamation for Jewish American Heritage Month
- Obamas griped that the American public just did not appreciate their exceptional leader
- Gets annoyed when asked about number of vacations, doesn’t answer question
- “I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.”
- “This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.”
- Blames Fox News for his unpopularity because “they hear Obama is a Muslim 24/7, and it begins to seep in”
- Attacks Limbaugh while remaining silent on Maher contribution to his super-PAC
- Says “when the chips are down, I have Israel’s back,” WH claims it’s not a military doctrine
- Apology to Karzai “calmed things down“
- Uses Boeing plant in SC to cheer manufacturing after his NLRB tried to shut it down
- Emphasizes graduation rates in SOTU, cuts DC voucher program that nearly doubled grad rates
- “Well, it turns out our Founders designed a system that makes it more difficult to bring about change that I would like sometimes.”
- Finds claim of unemployment “interesting” because he is getting “the word” that woman’s husband should have no trouble finding work
- Hails Roe as essential to allow “our daughters … to fulfill their dreams“
- Shuts down DisneyWorld in order to promote tourism
- “He didn’t want to take pictures with any more soldiers; he was complaining about it[.]
- Famous opponent of signing statements issues one covering 17 provisions of bill he signed
Previous Obamateurisms of the Year:
- Giving 2 minutes of “shout-outs” before getting to the Fort Hood shooting (2009)
- Obama leaves Clinton at press conference podium on tax deal to attend Christmas party (2010)
- “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president— with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln.” (2011)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The “move on to another topic” is bogus, Ed.
Mr Lehrer did want to move on.
Mr Obama did not. He stayed on that topic, despite Lehrer’s wishes.

EliTheBean on October 14, 2012 at 9:42 AM
Why is there no “That wasn’t the Real Mitt Romney”? That speaks the most volumes about the nature of the echo chamber.

Very funny

Such a hard choice between “another topic” and “too polite”.
but both show his arrogance and narcissism.
sh221b on October 14, 2012 at 9:48 AM
I was just too polite to the gun clinging bible thumpers, that’s my problem. That and I don’t tell good enough stories to sell my failed policies, and racism prevents my Funny Name from making me president.

America, you may want to move on to another president. Please.
Eren on October 14, 2012 at 9:50 AM
Option 1 may have been the most obamateuristic, but I went with “Uh…” because it’s so obvious that this verbal pause/stumble is always the prelude to a lie with him.
SKYFOX on October 14, 2012 at 9:52 AM
“Terrible, since you got here.”
Couldn’t that describe the entire last 4 years?

I wanna give that “terrible since you got here” guy a medal. I wish I was there, it was probably the most hilarious thing ever. How could no one have caught that on a video phone? Or at least an ObamaiPhone?

Slade73 on October 14, 2012 at 10:06 AM
I picked “I was just too darn polite”, because of how long it took Obama to settle on it as his excuse for losing in such a spectacular manner. It’s not because he didn’t bother to prepare, or that he had no real argument, or even the altitude, he’s just too darn polite.
Night Owl on October 14, 2012 at 10:08 AM
too darn polite? Not cursing when it’s warranted is just as bad as not being racist when you obviously are.
Slade73 on October 14, 2012 at 10:12 AM
This was impossible to pick, they were all sooooo good! But obviously, the “move along Jim” is clearly the winner. It represents the entirety of Obama’s presidency. Avoidance of the important issues!
chrisknits on October 14, 2012 at 10:12 AM
“Mr. President, Amb. Stevens has been murdered….what shall we do?”
“Uh…um….ah…..can we move to a different topic?”
BobMbx on October 14, 2012 at 10:17 AM
If there is one thing Owe is not, it’s polite. His refusal to look at Romney and his disdain for even having to show up was very evident.
“Jim, you might want to move on to another topic” was probably an order or a plea, it again shows arrogance by calling him by his first name and directing him. “Jim” didn’t get to call Owe “Barry”.

Don’t try national politics, Reed. You’re way too into identity politics with a race-baiting theme. That’s such an old ploy that even old-timey black politicians have given it up. The Muslim association doesn’t work too well either.

I honestly keep looking, but I can’t find a single good thing to say about Obama. And Biden reaffirmed it for me the other night.
Liam on October 14, 2012 at 10:48 AM
a little OT –
but did anyone catch the Ricism of the Week? She tweeted how proud she was of working with the LGBT community for human rights at the UN on the day of the Bhengazi hearing!
I wonder if she realizes without her presence 20 different countries would have started throwing stones and readying the nooses.

Liam on October 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM
Ann Coulter is right when she says racism is the sole bastion of the left these days. Are there some skinhead militia racists? Sure. But I doubt they buy tickets to the RNC convention. Half the DNC boos the Jews, and thinks blacks should be subservient to the Dem plantation.
Slade73 on October 14, 2012 at 11:07 AM

Slade73 on October 14, 2012 at 11:17 AM
Obama is such a whining simpering little crybaby.
I truly hope that, once he is voted from office, liberals finally see what they embrace for what their politics really are. Far as I’m concerned, Obama is the poster child of true liberalism. He exemplifies and personifies everything that is wrong with liberals. All in one neat package.
George Washington was “First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.”
Barack Obama is “The Affirmative Action president.”
Liam on October 14, 2012 at 11:22 AM

The War Planner on October 14, 2012 at 11:29 AM
~S~ Actually, I think Obama set back race relations by 50 years, and liberalism by another hundred. The latter I don’t mind; I’m quite done with liberals. They’re boorish and, at a dime a dozen, they’re also overpriced (tax not included).
If race was really such an important issue, Obama had the perfect and truly unique opportunity to destroy any remaining racism left in our country. But, instead, he’s just another common, typical, and textbook liberal.
Very sad, I think, for our United States.
Liam on October 14, 2012 at 11:32 AM
Just as awful to me, really.
I used to be very liberal. But modern libs dirtied and destroyed what we used to believe in when I was teenager. My Conservatism, however, takes in and embraces all that.
Liam on October 14, 2012 at 11:36 AM
He wanted to just move on to another topic… or just get the thing over with as quickly as possible since he was running out the clock from the first answer.
That wasn’t going to happen.
ajacksonian on October 14, 2012 at 11:37 AM

Why invent an illegitimate one?
itsnotaboutme on October 14, 2012 at 11:40 AM
Had to vote for the “How’s business?” because it is so amateurish and so indicative of Obama’s ego. He didn’t know the answer, but couldn’t conceive of anyone not being SOOO happy with Obama being there!

I went with the last option, as “Uh…” sums up Obama’s presidency quite effectively in just one word.
Aizen on October 14, 2012 at 12:28 PM
the move-on…the entire Dem party platform consists of a handful of bogus “talking points” (they are running out of them as they get discredited one by one). so to keep coming back to one of the few remaining only to see it not going anywhere is the “I’m taking my ball and going home” mindset that is so typical.
BTW, tomorrow is Oct 15. I believe that is the day that Romney’s hi-jacked tax returns are supposed to be released. Looking forward to see who becomes the martyr.
teejk on October 14, 2012 at 1:30 PM
You must not have been watching. Obama was uncomfortable, and badly wanted to change the subject. He kept on talking just to run out the clock.
landlines on October 14, 2012 at 2:58 PM
While asking a business owner how things are going, without already knowing the answer, is a rookie fumble, the most obvious amateurism is him trying to claim he was too polite.
And even the treasonous, fifth-column, re-elect-Obama-at-all-costs media couldn’t cover for him.
Down for the count…
Freelancer on October 14, 2012 at 4:26 PM
