Awesome. Florida to adopt race based academic goals

posted at 5:01 pm on October 14, 2012 by Jazz Shaw

I would have brought this story up earlier, but the first couple of times I saw it mentioned on Twitter I’d assumed that it was either a joke, an article from The Onion, or some sort of intentional hoax. But as it turns out, at least according to the local news, the state of Florida’s Board of Education has decided to throw in the towel on education and will institute a new set of target goals for the percentages of students achieving academic success based on… their race.

The Florida State Board of Education passed a plan that sets goals for students in math and reading based upon their race.

On Tuesday, the board passed a revised strategic plan that says that by 2018, it wants 90 percent of Asian students, 88 percent of white students, 81 percent of Hispanics and 74 percent of black students to be reading at or above grade level. For math, the goals are 92 percent of Asian kids to be proficient, whites at 86 percent, Hispanics at 80 percent and blacks at 74 percent. It also measures by other groupings, such as poverty and disabilities, reported the Palm Beach Post.

The plan has infuriated many community activists in Palm Beach County and across the state.

Even if you wanted to make the argument that maybe – just maybe – you could relax the requirements for some school districts based on their relative economic levels, that would be highly problematic at best. A baseline assumption that some students are simply destined to do worse than others based on their environment regardless of their own personal drive, ambition, and support levels of their families is insulting to say the least. But this goes much further, assuming that not only are black and Hispanic students incapable of matching their white peers achievements, but that the Asian kids will leave the white students in the dust without breaking a sweat.

The Lonely Conservative sees the not very invisible hand of Washington behind it all.

Over the summer I alerted you to plans by the Obama administration to force schools across the US to institute race-based disciplinary policies. Well, it’s already happening.

Under pressure from the Education Department, which investigated it over “racial disparities” and “disparate impact,” the Oakland, California, school system has agreed to impose “targeted reductions” in “suspensions for African American students, Latino students, and students receiving special education services; and African American students suspended for defiance.” See Agreement to Resolve Oakland Unified School District, OCR Case No. 09125001, page 14, Section VIII(c)(iii).

These “targeted reductions” are racial quotas in all but name. (“Disparate impact” is when a process affects one racial group more than another, despite having no racist motive, such as when whites have higher average scores than minorities on a standardized test.) The Oakland case is just “the first of some 20 federal investigations into racial disparities in school districts’ disciplinary practices,” which may lead to racial quotas in school discipline in many other school systems (and eventually perhaps in colleges as well).

What are these people thinking? It’s bad enough that we have an inbred media system which seeks to divide the nation up politically into ideological pigeonholes, but now we’re going to transfer that over to the education system before the kids even make it to early adulthood? Don’t be terribly surprised if the backlash from this has the Board of Education doing a fast walk back this week.

Didn’t we go through this whole routine back in the 90′s with The Bell Curve?

Of course, this all comes down to a need for federalism, or even hyper-federalism. Let the individual school districts determine their own academic goals based on the needs of their own students.

“Targeted reductions” results in not removing trouble-maker kids from the classroom, resulting in the teacher consuming more of their class-time in discipline and distractions rather than actually teaching, thereby punishing the kids in the class that are actually there to learn.

This is also known as the “unintended consequences of good intentions.” Way to go, Lefties.

Finally. Some one has the balls to put in writing what we already knew. We have been dumbing down the education system for at least 3 decades or more. Disciplinary “quotas” based on race in public schools across the nation have been in effect for at least 10 years or more. Want your child to get an education and not be exposed daily to gangs, promicious sex, drugs, and the training grounds for career criminals, get them the hell out of the public schools. Homeschool or private christian schools. You owe it to your kids.

The logic of the ironclad minds of liberals goes something like this:

If there is some disparately poor result of a minority group, then either they are genetically/racially/inherently inferior, or else they are discriminated against. There is no third alternative. Rejecting the first possibility, then they insist it’s due to discrimination.

See Thomas Sowell for how groups may excel without us knowing why. I mean, stuff happens. My personal take is it’s upbringing and cultural differences. A black kid looks at himself in the mirror and comes to certain conclusions based on what he sees. Like, if he does well academically, that means he’s “acting white”.

Asians do so well in school that colleges have to discriminate against them in enrollment. And the Jews. Don’t get me started on the Jews.

Paul-Cincy on October 14, 2012 at 5:20 PM

Look, this is a helluva lot easier than addressing what these liberal democrats have done to the inner cities and done to the families of these children, such as making us all call a 15-year-old having her second child a “single mom” instead of the abject tragedy that it is. They utterly destroy the black community because beggars are easier for those venal politicians to please, and then lower the threshold for how they’ll measure the academic success of the hopeless beggars they’ve created. That’s the ticket! Anything more might have them thinking for themselves, demanding more than the bones being thrown their way, and the corrupt DEMOCRAT politicians who keep them enslaved — while living in gated mansions, sending their own children to elite private schools, and becoming multi-millionaires — cannot have that. Evil doesn’t even begin to describe…

Look for a Thomas Sowell column on this before long. Nothing lights him up more than busybodies trying to “help” a group of people, and doing things which only hurt them.

His classic example is an admissions quota to the MIT mathematics deparment for blacks, which annually produce the largest number of failures at that school each year. Students who would be standout achievers at 90% of universities around the nation are sent to the one place where they end up in the bottom 20% academically, simply because the standards are so very high. If a student isn’t qualified for that program on their scholastic merit, putting them in it might make the busybody feel good about their contribution to society, but that contribution turns out to be inducing failure of the very people they pretend to be helping.

ninjapirate,

That statement is only valid as long as people focus on anything other than the actual education of students, beginning with parents. Any parent who cares can ensure a quality education for their children regardless of what a school delivers. Getting the parents to believe that only a school can teach, is the biggest lie. My children, not specially gifted, could read newspaper articles and do basic algebraic math (such as “x*5=15, what is x?”) by age four. More importantly, they already knew how to learn for themselves.

Finally, the TRUTH of how the lunatic-left’s favorite form of discrimination, AFFIRAMTIVE ACTION SPECIAL TREATMENT / RACIST RACIAL QUOTAS, have hurst the lives of those given this privilege, as well and the schools and society that must cope with its harmful results…

“Mismatch: How Affirmative Action Hurts Students It’s Intended to Help, and Why Universities Won’t Admit It,” October 2012, by Richard Sander and Stuart Taylor Jr.

The authors cut through the lies and BS that the lunatic-left has been saying for decades and use documented facts and case studies to show the horrific consequences of this ill-conceived, immoral form of discrimination. The common result of affirmative action discrimination is a “mismatch” between the privileged situation that it grants to minorities and their ability to fulfill the normal expectations of that situation. Although the authors do not use him as an example, OBOZO is certainly the poster-boy for the ill effects that bad consequences that affirmative action special treatment can have. Had OBOZO not had the privileges afforded by this discrimination against other, more academically qualified people, he might well had gone into a career that was a better match to his actual skills and abilities (like golf caddy, sanitation worker, Planned Parenthood abortion assistant, etc.) and would have been successful, instead of being a compete and total failure as THE WORST PRESIDENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY, which has resulted in pain and suffering to millions of Americans an even the deaths of at least five Americans.

The problem with this is the arbitrary societal grouping that leads to the inevitable impact on expectations by race. When family income level is the best corelation to academic performance, why break down performance by race in the first place? Why not by height or shoe size?

I think it has been politically desireable to do so, as the poorer performance of black students, many who are also poor, conveniently provided ammo to back accusations of racism in education, towards increased political control of education by black advocates. Now that we have the statistics, disparate achievement a hard thing to ignore.

So if you know you are beginning with a disparity among groups, why not have varying goals as well, at least in the short term? Say you want 90% proficiency in math. Group 1 is currently 38% proficient. Their proficiency level must more than double. Group 2 is 50%, so they have to almost double proficiency. Group 3 is 75% proficient, so they require only a 20% increase. If group one is 75% of the student body, then they along with the school system are being set up to fail if expected to more than double proficiency in a short period. Students have to be given a reasonable goal, with the end game being uping expectations each time an intermediate goal is reached.

Of course, if you simply want the best public education system in the world, the solution is easy – invert the public-private paradigm. Only students who achieve a certain proficiency and who can maintain that performance, and who can behave in class, will be given a free public education. Everyone else goes to private schools where parent’s pay for their child’s education until either 1) their performace improves to where they are invited (or test into) the public schools or 2)the parents determine that their child is not cut out for a traditional academic environment and pursues alternate schooling. End using the public school as a dumping ground for failed social experements.

Given the choice between lowering standards to increase proficiency or to maintain standards but expect lesser results from groups who have historically underachieved, I prefer maintaining standards.

Elizabeth Warren Claims Not to ‘Know’ Whether Union Members Were Fined for Not Supporting Her

Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat challenging Republican Scott Brown for the U.S. Senate, dodged questions about claims that a local union was fining its members for not publicly supporting her campaign. This week, Warren repeatedly told Boston’s local FOX TV affiliate, “I don’t know anything about” the possibility that union members were threatened with fines if they did not attend a debate and hold signs to support the Democrat. After being pressed about her thoughts on those allegations several times by the reporter, a visibly agitated Warren said that she is “very proud of the union endorsement” she’s received.

“Is that [fining union members] something you would tolerate, something you would accept, is all I’m asking,” the reporter says.

“No!” Warren responds. “No. I mean, no. But I don’t know anything about this story, and I don’t know anything about the truth of it, so the answer is, no.” Watch the video below:

So not only is achievement going to be rationed out by racial aptitude but our liberal masters have decided that discipline must be as well. How long before it becomes law that one white kid must serve detention for every to black kids? And if it applies to school children, how long before we make it that law of the land that one white person must be put in jail for every black person? What a brave new world awaits down this road.

MJBrutus on October 14, 2012 at 5:56 PM

What is overlooked in the racial outrage is that the standards are laughably low. Only 90% of Asians must read “at grade level” which is roughly four years behind where it was 30 years ago. Math “proficiency” still leaves us behind every other developed economy.

Public education is a joke, a bigger failure than Obama. We need to get the federal government and unions completely out of the schools, and grant parents vouchers to choose any school their kids can get into.

If Florida tried to do something even kinda, remotely, tangentially, not really like this with voting, the DOJ would intervene. Where’s the DOE?

Wasn’t the Obama administration supposed to usher in an era of healed race relations, peace and harmony? Snort.

When are the Asians and Whites gonna cry racism, protesting that much more is expected of them? Welcome to Obamuh’s post-racial America: redistribute, level the playing fields, lower the standards. I thought hope was meant to raise people up. Guess I gotta get me one o’ ‘dem Obamuh dictionaries so I can follow all his subterfuges–a word that’s probably too advanced to be in there.

I would prefer the complete abolition of government schooling, but if thats not possible, at least recognizing reality is a good step. Contrary to the egalitarian ‘conservatives’ on this board, eager to chuck the ‘racist’ label back to progressives, there is, and has been, and likely to continue being, a 1 standard deviation gap in IQ between blacks and whites and a smaller gap between asians and whites, which manifests itself in test scores, reading and arithmetic ability, among other measures. Recognizing this reality IS GOOD. Conservatives, must always, at first, stand for the truth no matter how unpleasant it is. The truth is that, by using criteria mismatched to the students’ abilities, the students of minority races suffer immensely, get bored and drop out. There’s no doubt that differential standards would emerge in a completely private school system as well.
Please, I beg of you, do not fall for the cheap Glenn Beck-ian trick of adopting egalitarian leftist rhetoric to beat the Progressives with. First, recognize the reality of ineradicable inequality. Then we can talk real ‘solutions’ which aren’t harebrained affirmative action policies.

To see how absurd his is, think about what they would have to do with someone like Tiger Woods – half Black and half Asian. Which racial pidgin hole do they put such a child into. Progressive education, ain’t it wonderful?

MJBrutus on October 14, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Do those goals include “Speak proper English”, “dress like a civilized human being”, and “not steal anything that isn’t nailed down”?

You want academic progress, start with those three things and go from there.

MelonCollie on October 14, 2012 at 6:15 PM

Thank God flawedskull showed up at the 6:06PM mark. An awesome and much needed commment.

Look: basing your worldview on one line from a 10 year old Michael Gerson speech is as stupid as basing your immigration policy on a bad poem on an old French statue.

I hope nobody is suggesting the Judge Posner and his Nobel winning co-blogger are white supremacists:

The average white IQ is of course 100 and the Asian (like the Jewish) almost one standard deviation higher, that is, 115. The average black IQ is 85, a full standard deviation below the white average, and the average Hispanic IQ has been estimated recently at 89.

Black children in particular often come from disordered households, which has a negative effect on ability to learn and perhaps indeed on IQ (which is only partly hereditary) as well. Increasingly, black and Hispanic students find themselves in schools with few white or Asian students. The challenge to American education is to provide a useful education to the large number of Americans who are unlikely to benefit from a college education or from high school courses aimed at preparing students for college.

We must accept reality on reality’s terms or end up as wickedly utopian as the leftists we’re forever mocking.

ConservativeTalkRadio on October 14, 2012 at 6:15 PM

What happens when these kids want to go to college? Are they going to have to change the SAT/ACT exams to dumb it down for those who were never expected to achieve what other kids had to?

scalleywag on October 14, 2012 at 5:58 PM

The System has already determined that most will not be going to college. In the old days this was called tracking but that was done on an individual basis, not for whole groups.

The end result is this: a black kid who is performing well above the level of other blacks will have the overall advancement of the black student population take precident over his personal academic advancement. Further, a white student might perform at the same level as this black student but just a bit below the white average, so will enjoy resources lifting his grades to assist in the white population reaching its goals. The black kid may noy get the same resources and thus fall behind his white counterpart.

The SAT has already been renormed once by 100 points. A 1000 now was a 900 in the early 90′s. Since the horses are already out of the corral just a little tweak here and a little tweak there and it is renormed again.

This has to be a joke. How do you make targeted reductions in students suspended for defiance? If this were a race-neutral policy, it would make sense–the kids hate being in school, so punish them by making them stay in school.

But this race-based discipline is crazy.

However, in rocket science, 2 and 2 must equal 4.

Lanceman on October 14, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Will it then be that only certain races can have certain jobs?

After all – if the application for the job says the schooling was from Florida and the employer knows that the education standards were different, then the employer would have to match the job with the new hire.

Hello racial profiling again!
Government will intervene and mandate a certain number of people per job.
So stupid.

So what the Florida Board of Education has de facto stated openly here, is “Asian kids are smarter than White kids, who are smarter than Hispanic kids, and Black kids are just under 3/4 as smart as what a ‘normal person’ should be.”

Umm….why is race even tracked in academic performance…at all?

I swear to God, Dr. King is rolling in his grave. And I am continually MYSTIFIED as to why ‘minorities’ would possibly vote for a party that claims to be ‘Progressive’, yet can’t seem to shake it’s Klan roots of thinking.

Liberals’ hypocrisy makes me physically ill.
