Catholic bishops to Biden: That ain’t the fact, Jack

posted at 10:01 am on October 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

During the Vice Presidential debate’s final 30 minutes, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan were asked to describe how their Catholic faith informed their public policy.  As part of that exchange, the topic of the HHS contraception mandate arose, and Joe Biden insisted that the rule wouldn’t apply to any “Catholic institution – Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,” and declared, “That is a fact. That is a fact.”

Paul Ryan responded during the debate to Biden’s claim with the simple question: “Why are they suing you, then?”  On Friday, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops responded to both men with a statement explaining very clearly why dozens of Catholic institutions are suing to overturn the HHS mandate:

“This is not a fact,” said a statement issued by the U.S.C.C.B on Friday. “The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain ‘religious employers.’ That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to ‘Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,’ or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.

“HHS has proposed an additional ‘accommodation’ for religious organizations like these, which HHS itself describes as ‘non-exempt,’” said the U.S.C.C.B. “That proposal does not even potentially relieve these organizations from the obligation ‘to pay for contraception’ and ‘to be a vehicle to get contraception.’ They will have to serve as a vehicle, because they will still be forced to provide their employees with health coverage, and that coverage will still have to include sterilization, contraception, and abortifacients. They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries.”

This is one of the biggest bald-faced lies Joe Biden told during the debate.  The Obama administration defined “religious organization” in its narrow exemption to the HHS mandate as places of worship — i.e., the churches themselves — or organizations that only employ and serve people of the same religious affiliation.  Catholic hospitals, schools, and charities both employ and serve people of all religious affiliations, or none at all, as do many other faith-based organizations that serve our communities.  They do this as an expression of their faith — acts of mercy and charity that their religious principles demand of them.  However, under the Obama definition of religious expression, that no longer qualifies as legitimate religious expression under the First Amendment, and makes all of them ineligible for the extremely narrow religious exemption of the HHS mandate.

It’s not possible that Biden has remained ignorant of this point.  The USCCB and other religious denominations have made this point loudly, repeatedly, and have now filed a blizzard of lawsuits to stop the federal government from its attempt to define and severely limit the definition of religious expression.  Biden has been personally challenged on this point many times, and refuses to acknowledge that the so-called “accommodation” did nothing to change that limitation of the freedom of religious expression.  Biden knows well what the issues are, and what the mandate actually does to the organizations he named in this statement.  He just chose to lie about it.

Biden made a lot of sweeping, categorical generalizations in the debate. There’s probably a lot of stuff he said that was just wrong, but why go to the trouble of checking it all out. It’s like writing down everything a drunken fool says over an hour and a half and then trying to make sense of it.

I think Paul Ryan missed a number of opportunities to call Joe out on whoppers, but this was so obvious I was stunned he didn’t jump on it.

We know Joe is a lifelong hack politician and that he will literally say anything when he has an audience, but the people who thought he won the debate don’t know what’s good for America.

Biden much like Obama only concentrates the person or crowd in front of him. People point out that he lies and that is true but does he ever pay for his lies? No he really doesn’t and that is what he has learned in 40 years of loving in a solid blue state. That he can make statements that aren’t true to win the debate at the moment and then just bluster that his opponents are all a$$holes for calling him out. The key to that is the democrat base. They LOVE lies about Republicans and that support their causes and thus if you go over and read reviews of the base at left wing blogs they LOVE Biden because they LOVE anyone who keeps their bubble inflated.

This is why I abhor the “I’m personally opposed to , but I’m not going to impose my beliefs on others” argument. It is nothing more thana coward’s argument, and almost always is hypocritical.

Specifically, Obamacare forces the administration’s belief that contraception, abortifacients and sterilizations must be provided to employees by way of insurance to their employees, on religious organazations whose beliefs dictate otherwise.

Taxpayer funding is forcing the administrations beliefs about abortions on pro-lifers, and making them pay for it.

The First Amendment was put in place to protect religion from government, yet these clowns couldn’t care less. Man, I despise this administration.

Ace points this whopper out from Ol Slow as a snail Joe..

Where things really got dicey was when, in response to the charge that the Afghan surge withdrawal timeline, Biden tried to hide behind the military. Raddatz pressed him on the complaints she is hearing — we all are hearing — but Biden dismissed it as nonsense. He pretended that the withdrawal timeline was proposed by the Joint Chiefs rather than imposed by the White House.

That is not true. The Joint Chiefs and the Afghan combatant commander did go along with the White House order, but they proposed a slower, conditions-based timeline and they certainly did not want it announced at the outset.

This is a very dangerous game to play. Because of the strong support for the principle of civilian control among our armed forces, civilians can and do make the military salute and obey orders the military think are inadvisable. Canny commanders-in-chief try to minimize those instances, working with the military to cajole and bargain them into supporting positions that they initially opposed (this is exactly what Bush did with the Iraq surge). But when the White House bigfoots a decision, as the Obama White House did multiple times on Afghanistan, it is the president who must shoulder the political load for the decision.

Biden knows, or should know, that from the military’s perspective President Obama imposed an under-resourced Afghan surge, undercut it by announcing the timeline, and interrupted the last fighting season by accelerating the withdrawal. That was his prerogative as commander-in-chief. But if that policy is criticized, as Ryan did in the debate, the Obama White House must be honest about how it came about. Biden cannot pretend that this was the military’s plan all along.

There is virtually NOTHING Biden said.. which wasn’t a bald faced lie..

Why?

He distorted and lied through the entire debate.. and these knuckleheads know it.. but it’s not that Joe told lies they love..

It was because Joe expressed their complete contempt and hatred for Ryan..

That was what they loved, the left simply hates any republican, and one who stands in opposition, they really get their hate going on. Every republican, moderate.. to conservative in my whole life time, has been victim to their contempt and derision.. Reagan is immensely popular.. and for him.. they have two reactions..

agreed..

How we ever change it.. Breitbart was right.. and the only way we’ll ever have an even playing field is having our side finance alternative venues, were our voices can be heard, free of the lamestreamers ridicule and omissions..

The tough one is breaking into the audience numbers of the legacy media.. like ABC CBS NBC.. they hold a large number in thrall who never look elsewhere for information.. if we can make an alternative network with an equivalent size.. then we have a chance to break their lock on information.

But we’d almost have to buy one of the networks to do that.. and forcing them to accept both sides on an issue… like FOX at it’s best.. BOTH sides.. instead of three hard left demagogues, one left of center moderate, and one me too rino..

That is hardly fair, and they know it.

Two hard left.. two right of center conservatives.. that would be fair.. but we’ll never see it on the lamestream news..

Truth is controversial when it goes against the left’s cookie cutter memes..

Then it’s not, “truth we don’t like”.. but Truth that is actually fact based.. something the MSM will never show, or admit. If it doesn’t “favor” the left, to them, it’s not truth. It’s “divisive rhetoric”.

None of the Catholics I know, good or bad, are as low as Joe Biden.

Biden is a total sleaze, a sneak and a coward. Just one look at him says it all, defines him. He looks like the kind of person who roll a drunk when the drunk is passed out.

Biden seems the sort to con his senile grandmother to write him a check, taking advantage of her.

Politicians used to kiss babies to win votes. But I can easily picture Biden taking a baby out of a stroller, then rushing off to a pawn shop to sell the stroller for a quick buck. Hell’s bells! I wouldn’t be surprised if Joe tried selling the baby, too.

I have never liked Joe Biden.

For the “Math Is Hard” file:

BIDEN: Let me tell you what was a good idea. It was a good idea, Moody’s and others said that this was exactly what we needed to stop this from going off the cliff. It set the conditions to be able to grow again. We have, in fact, 4 percent of those green jobs didn’t go under. It’s a better batting average than investment bankers have. They have about a 40 percent…”

In Obamaworld, 4% > 40%.

Is there a thorough compendium of Joe’s lies from the debate somewhere? Just from the debate, it needs to be a reasonable size.

Has it ever happened before in American history that the Catholic Bishops have found it necessary to point out that a major public figure is a lying sack of poop?

They plan to Alinsky the Catholic hospitals out of business so the Gubmint can step in and emminent domain them into Federal entities where the death panels can decide who lives and who dies.

If I were the administrator of one of those hospitals I would have it demolished. Then the government could eminent domain to its hearts delight.

Mark Levin for some reason that he didn’t state said to keep an eye on the Daily Beast, Drudge and Fox websites. I got the impression some type of news is coming. He also spoke highly of Eli Lake (Daily Beast)

I think he almost certainly doesn’t know. I think when he says “but I mean everything I say” he really does. The earnestness with which he says these things could, in theory, be faked, and I imagine at some point much earlier in his career, he’d have had to fake it, but I think it’s more likely that by now, he resides in a “post-truth” world, where a statement’s validity is entirely a function of how useful it is in the context of the current discussion.

As one of the pioneers of this paradigm once helpfully explained:

It’s not a lie if you believe it.

How else do you say these things with a straight face?:

We weren’t told they wanted more security.

And, by the way, they talk about this Great Recession as if it fell out of the sky, like, “Oh, my goodness, where did it come from?” It came from this man voting to put two wars on a credit card, to at the same time put a prescription drug benefit on the credit card, a trillion-dollar tax cut for the very wealthy. I was there. I voted against them. I said, no, we can’t afford that.

When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed.

And my personal favorite:

Here’s what the president said when we said no. He insisted on elections on the West Bank, when I said, and others said, and Barack Obama said, “Big mistake. Hamas will win. You’ll legitimize them.” What happened? Hamas won. When we kicked — along with France, we kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon, I said and Barack said, “Move NATO forces in there. Fill the vacuum, because if you don’t know — if you don’t, Hezbollah will control it.”

RINO in Name Only on October 13, 2012 at 12:09 PM

Biden is a cultural Catholic who has never progressed beyond the “childhood” stage of his faith, i.e. born into a Catholic family but never educated himself to reach a mature faith.

Too many Catholics think because they attend Mass and receive the Blessed Eucharist, they are good to go. They have no idea of the true teachings and beauty of their faith, they believe much like a child believes in Santa Claus.

One is not Catholic because one receives communion, one receives communion because one is Catholic.

Whether it’s HHS Mandate, voting for two wars, or sex with Monica Lewinsky. Ticket to ride.

He’s a liar. And a bad one, at that.

Jaibones on October 13, 2012 at 12:50 PM

Oh, this was in the second hour, after he crashed from his drug-induced and/or mental illness-based high he had the first hour. I like this Joe Biden more. Unfortunately for him, the more sober he acts, the more likely people are to take what he says seriously. The Catholic Bishops were listening.

Obama drama

Schadenfreude on October 13, 2012 at 3:03 PM

The Obama administration defined “religious organization” in its narrow exemption to the HHS mandate as places of worship — i.e., the churches themselves

So under Emperor Obama, Catholics can be as Catholic as they want, but only at church, which for most would be no more than one hour a week. Muslims, on the other hand, under Emperor Obama, can be Muslim 24X7.

I’m impressed with how quickly the bishops acted. If this administration keeps it up, the response time will eventually be measured in minutes.

I’ve never heard so many homilies in Church on birth control, abortion, freedom, what it means to be a good Catholic and citizen, and the importance of voting as I have these last few monnths… thanks Joe!
